00:10The quake hit just after 7.30 this morning local time in the Mindanao region.
00:15Buildings collapsed across the area and authorities say key roads, bridges and other infrastructure in and around General Santos City
00:22sustained major damage.
00:24The earthquake also triggered a tsunami of up to three feet, damaging at least one coastal village.
00:30Smaller waves were detected in Indonesia, Palau and as far away as southern Japan.
00:36The quake struck just as students were returning to class for the start of the new school year.
00:41One video posted to social media shows children crouching outdoors as the ground shakes beneath them.
00:47In another incident, the roof of a high school building collapsed while students were gathered outside on the school's sports
00:54field.
00:55No injuries were reported.
00:56However, the Philippines Office of Civil Defense says at least 19 people were killed in the earthquake.
01:02Most in collapsed buildings and landslides and thousands of residents are now displaced from their homes.
