00:00Environmental activists take to the streets of Nairobi to oppose plans for a parking facility inside Nairobi National Park.
00:09Protesters say further development threatens the city's unique wildlife sanctuary
00:14and are also accusing police of disrupting what they describe as a peaceful demonstration.
00:20It is a shame that we would be stopped from a peaceful protest.
00:25We have a right within our constitution to protest and to defend our civil rights and everything that we believe
00:33in.
00:34And this is a violation of those rights.
00:36But further it is a violation of our human rights that they are trying to take this park.
00:40So I hope that we have saved the park in some way.
00:45Protesters in Nairobi are accusing authorities of reducing the vital wildlife habitat
00:50and sidelining public input on developments inside protected land.
00:55Activists warn the decisions could threaten the future of the iconic National Park.
01:01I've been coming to Nairobi National Park since 1973 as an eight-year-old child.
01:07And I feel every future generation should have full access to the park.
01:11And having it see disintegrate as it is before my eyes,
01:16I'm fearful for the next generation to not have a proper park for the wildlife to roam free and wild.
01:23Please do all you can to protect for future generations to come.
01:28This is a national heritage.
01:31Nairobi National Park covers some 117 square kilometres.
01:37It was established in 1946 after the Maasai community dedicated the land to conservation.
