00:02Caboche lives for the stage, and refuses to limit himself, either musically or culturally.
00:08A new generation of African musicians is breaking down musical and cultural barriers.
00:14They sample sounds from their homeland, the diaspora, and the future.
00:18And Caboche is leading the way.
00:22Caboche is promoting his new album on his current tour.
00:25He may not be playing on the biggest stages yet, but he performs with great passion.
00:33The show is basically curated to feel like a little chach from Nairobi.
00:39It's basically curated to feel like that.
00:41And so it's like very uppity and very lively and dancey.
00:46And then there's moments where it's a little quiet and chill.
00:48And then it goes back up again, and it's basically a little chach.
00:55Caboche came to music indirectly.
00:58After trying his hand at being an actor and TV presenter, he set himself a challenge.
01:02To post a new track online every week.
01:05Since then, making music has become his life.
01:08Caboche Gitao is Caboche's real name.
01:11He grew up in Kenya's capital, Nairobi.
01:13Today, he lives in Berlin.
01:15But for him, Nairobi isn't a place of the past.
01:18It's a source of inspiration for the present.
01:20At home, everything is super colorful.
01:22When you hear the music and you see all that bust of flavor, that's all home.
01:31When you hear how the music is like, and the falsettos are really, really up there.
01:43That's home.
01:43When you hear a little bit of the chaos in the music, that's home.
01:50Visually, too, Caboche plays with a wide variety of styles.
01:54For his latest videos, he drew inspiration from German cinema of the 1920s and 30s.
02:04Berlin offers Caboche the perfect environment for his creativity.
02:09One of his favorite places in Berlin is the Neue Nationalgalerie, a museum dedicated to 20th century art.
02:17It's so inspiring to always come in here and find something cool, like, or see some of your favorite, at
02:23least for me, see some of my favorite, like, paintings, still be like, wow, like, how did they do that?
02:30Another reason to love Berlin are the many musicians who live here.
02:34For example, drummer Marcus Uncle Lingner.
02:38Caboche brought him on board to provide live backing for his concerts.
02:54I didn't realize the kind of impact that drums have, like, live drums specifically, have on a live show.
03:03And so the first time we played with him, like, ever since I started playing with him, then I came
03:11to understand, like, oh, like, he's the groove, like, he brings the groove.
03:17With Caboche, pop music becomes a synthesis of all art forms.
03:21He's always looking beyond the boundaries of pop to places where there's something new to discover.
03:30I think it's important to be curious, and I think I'm curious.
03:34And my hope would be that that comes through with, like, whatever it is that I'm touching.
03:42Growing up in Kenya, Caboche was surrounded by a wide variety of music, ranging from country and gospel to benga
03:49and hip-hop.
03:49He's now building on what he started in Nairobi, developing his own African take on pop music in Berlin.
