Bamako rally shows support for President Goita in five-year anniversary celebrations

Hundreds of citizens joined officials and military commanders at Bamako's Sports Palace on Sunday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of President Assimi Goita's assumption of power in 2021.  Footage shows participants dancing, cheering and listening to speeches, before attending a national anthem ceremony alongside officials. Banners expressing support for the transitional authorities were displayed across the venue.  Goita's special adviser, Aguibou Dembele, highlighted the country's pursuit of independence from external influences.  "Respect for Mali’s sovereignty, respect for strategic choices and partners, and respect for the interests of the Malian people in decision-making: I believe that all our work has been carried out on this basis and will continue in the same vein," he stressed.  "President Assimi, in his own right, cannot build this country alone. It is together that we build a nation. We all hold positions of responsibility, and each of us must shoulder that responsibility, for that is where our happiness lies," Dembele added.  Demonstrating how this shared responsibility is being implemented across different sectors of governance, Sidibe Morimousso, Chief of Staff at the Ministry for the Advancement of Women, Children and the Family, gave a highly positive assessment of the current leadership's domestic impact.  "It was the transitional president who facilitated the organisation of the national conference on the situation of women and families in Mali. This is truly beneficial and marks a first for Mali ... We are proud of him and stand with him," she noted.  Since taking power in 2021, Goita, together with military leaders in Niger and Burkina Faso, formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in 2023, seeking greater political independence and a shift away from traditional Western allies, particularly France.
