I always wondered why sci-fi movies were so obsessed with "little green men" with giant black eyes. When I dug into the actual origins of this cliché, I literally got chills! It turns out, this whole image started with our early, terrifying theories about Mars. I found out that because Mars is a toxic landscape filled with 95% carbon dioxide, early scientists and theorists believed any creatures there had to photosynthesize like plants just to survive. That explains the green skin! And since Mars is so much farther from the sun, it is incredibly dark. Evolution would force them to develop massive, pitch-black eyes just to hunt and see in the shadows. I think it is absolutely mind-blowing that what we consider a spooky pop-culture trope is actually based on a brilliant theory of extreme survival. Do you believe there is a planet out there where this evolutionary path actually happened?
