00:00When your Hygiena Kit is assembled, you're ready to use your Purely Yours breast pump.
00:07Start the pump with the suction dial before or after putting the flanges to your breast.
00:13Turn the dial clockwise to increase the suction and adjust the suction to the highest level
00:20comfortable for you.
00:22Next, set the pump speed with the speed dial.
00:28Again, turn the dial clockwise to increase the speed.
00:33Some mothers find their milk flows faster if they first set their pump speed to high.
00:41When you hold the flanges to your breasts, make sure your nipples are centered in the
00:46nipple tunnel.
00:49Hold them firmly, but gently, to create an airtight seal around your breasts.
00:57Flange fit is important for comfort and milk flow.
01:00What determines breast flange size and your fit is the width of the flange opening.
01:08With a good flange fit, you should see space around your nipple as it moves freely in the
01:13tunnel during pumping.
01:16If the breast flange is too small, your nipple may rub along the tunnel's sides or move very
01:22little.
01:23If the flange is too large, too much of the breast may be drawn in and it may be hard
01:29to
01:29get a good air seal.
01:32For a better fit, Ameda's custom-fit flange system offers seven different breast flange
01:38sizes, which adapt to all Ameda breast pumps and kits.
01:43If your pump or kit includes more than one flange size, try each one to see which is most
01:50comfortable and produces the best milk flow.
01:54Flange fit can change over time, so check your flange fit every few weeks.
02:00If you have small nipples and the flanges included with your pump kit are too large, a reducing
02:06insert or flexi-shield may improve your comfort and milk flow.
02:14If the breast flanges included are too small, larger sizes are available.
02:18These larger sizes, called custom-fit flanges, can be purchased separately.
02:25When your milk begins to flow, this is known as a letdown or milk release.
02:32This natural reflex pushes the milk out of the breast and is the most important part of
02:38successful pumping.
02:41During each breastfeeding, most mothers have three or four milk releases, even if they don't
02:47feel them.
02:48When your milk flows faster, you can use your pump controls to follow your flow.
02:55To do this, use the speed dial to find the setting that produces the fastest milk flow.
03:02Your best speed setting may vary from one pumping session to the next.
03:08When your milk release ends and your milk flow slows, try turning the speed dial clockwise again.
03:16A faster speed may trigger the next milk release faster.
03:21Many mothers pump more milk in less time by using a faster speed to trigger milk flow and
03:28a slower speed to drain it.
03:31Repeating these fast then slow speed settings several times is what we call multi-phase pumping,
03:38pumping, which mimics a baby's nursing pattern at the breast.
03:44But these suggestions are just a starting point.
03:48Always use the pump settings that work best for you.
03:52Amita's custom control was designed with you in mind.
03:57To trigger a milk release, it may also help to gently massage your breasts or apply a warm
04:03compression compress.
04:06As you pump, tilt the collection kit down slightly so your milk flows into the bottle.
04:13Close your eyes, relax, and imagine your baby nursing at your breast.
04:20Dual pumping takes much less time than single pumping.
04:25When dual pumping, allow 10 to 15 minutes per session.
04:31If you single pump, switch breasts about every 5 to 7 minutes and allow about 20 to 30 minutes
04:40total per session.
04:43When you finish pumping, turn off the breast pump.
04:47Then remove the flanges from your breasts.
04:51If necessary, break the suction by inserting a finger between the flange and your breast.
04:58When the suction is broken, remove the flange.
05:02Finally, unscrew the bottles and screw the locking caps into place.
05:08Follow the milk storage guidelines you're given.
