00:03now next this evening we've heard about the vinyl revival now another music format is making
00:09something of a comeback we're talking about the cd invented in 1979 at their peak they sold more
00:16than 200 billion but the advent of streaming led to a decline in sales but music shops say more
00:22people are discovering the delights of the disc as james webster reports there was a time when
00:29going into shops like this one in peterborough was the only way to buy music and while streaming
00:35makes up most listening sales of cds are increasing i remember the first record i bought

00:48track was that i downloaded and the whole point of vinyl cds is that you get a package and it's

00:56just the music um which infinitely sounds better anyway you actually get involved with the whole
01:03ethos of music well we keep all of the samples of the different types of packaging that you can get
01:08with cds since the 1990s key production has been manufacturing cds
01:19artists like kim wilde will commission not just regular discs but special editions too oh gosh yes
01:26there's five cds and two dvds inside here um as well as a really informative and lovely booklet inside so
01:33it's a real collector's edition and the companies noticed the rise in demand last year a 15 increase
01:39in the number of cds it pressed a survey's found that almost half of teenagers listen to physical
01:46music and it's a trend many parents approve of only one in five said they preferred their children
01:52listening to music on their smartphones what is the difference that you've noticed over the last year or so
01:58in terms of who is buying the cds when maybe they weren't before there's definitely a much younger
02:04demographic and buying the cds and more of cd players are being bought and um you have something
02:12physical i think human beings really love having something physical to hold something to to listen to
