00:00I knew her in a way that he never could. I knew her honesty, her compassion, her refusal to live
00:05with secrets. Hearing him attempt to rewrite her life and her character felt like losing her all
00:11over again, piece by piece, in a room where she could not defend herself. His lies did not just
00:18attempt to destroy her reputation. They forced me to relive my grief with anger and helplessness
00:25I cannot fully describe. He had a face. He had a name. He had a life. But Brendan Banfield
00:36shot his face, soiled his name, and treated his life as disposable. My son was a kind human being
00:51who had a full life of meaning. In contrast, Brendan will remain known as an abusive father,
01:06the brutal murderer of his dedicated and compassionate, beautiful wife,
01:15and a narcissistic killer of an innocent man.
01:22I'm greatly disappointed in the legal system. The system has failed not only me, but also Christine,
01:27my daughter Valerie, the Bensons, and the rest of my family. I was found guilty of a crime that I
01:33did
01:33not commit, but it's actually impossible to have committed the crime, as the prosecution,
01:37their experts and their witnesses have presented. I loved her very much. Despite what you may think
01:45of my affairs, our marriage worked for us. It wasn't something that I looked to end.
01:52It was told to other women that I was never going to leave Christine. That was always how it was
02:00said.
02:05Christine cared very much for her family and friends. I'm not trying to diminish in any way what
02:16her life was. She truly was a caring mother, a caring wife, a loving nurse.
02:29But I am not responsible for her death. This is not a knife that I ever held in my hand.
02:35And I never stabbed her.
02:39The level of cruelty, calculation, and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger
02:44or impulse. It reflects evil, which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to
02:52life. On count one of 2024-666, aggravated murder, I sentence you to life in the penitentiary for the
02:58rest of your natural life, without the possibility of parole, without good conduct allowances, or any
03:03earned sentence credits or conditional release.
03:07All right. You're a man of the custody of the sheriff.
03:10Thank you. And Ms. Gill, I'm going to take a 10-minute recess, and I'll come back and finish the
03:14rest of the
03:14sentencing docket, okay? All right. Anything further, Ms. Sands?
03:18All right.
03:19Thank you, guys.
