00:00It is almost summer, which means summer movies.
00:02So we sent our producer Jasmine JT Green out into the wilds of New York into Central Park
00:07to ask people about whether they are going to the movies and which movies they're going to.
00:13Hi, so I've been asking people about summer movies.
00:16What movies have you seen? What are you excited about this summer?
00:19One that we just saw that we're kind of addicted to is the movie Obsession.
00:23I just went last week to see Backrooms.
00:26The Backrooms movie is one we're dying to see. That's another one in the theater.
00:31So if you couldn't tell, we're kind of into the horror genre.
00:33So why do you think like horror is having a moment?
00:36You know, these two movies that you mentioned, Obsession and Backrooms, have been huge.
00:40With horror movies especially, you can kind of interpret it different,
00:44kind of talk about it after and be like, oh, this scared me, this scared me.
00:48I think younger people also like more of the horror genre too.
00:51They're really fresh and new ideas, I feel like.
00:53I want to like watch something that's like people my age, like same place in life.
00:59These two horror movies, Obsession and Backrooms, do you have any sense of why they've been the hit that they
01:06are?
01:07Horror is a genre that has worked for decades.
01:11In the last couple decades, as Hollywood has become obsessed with the big, big blockbusters,
01:16and I think become even more risk averse because it's gotten more and more corporate.
01:20Horror is the one genre that studios will consistently make because people will show up to the theater to watch
01:27them.
01:28We're going to get to the end of summer, end of the year.
01:30And the biggest movies for the most part are still going to be sequels and remakes and the like, right?
01:37You know, the highest grossing movie of the year so far is Super Mario Brothers Galaxy movie.
01:41A lot of trends that have been happening, horror movies, YouTube to Hollywood, A24, like all that,
01:48you had sort of them all piling on one another at the same time.
01:51And it happened at the same time that a Star Wars movie was kind of a disaster.
01:56And so it sort of reinforced this this perception that youth tastes have changed and that Hollywood must heed and
02:05take notice.
02:06And I think there's some definitely some truth to it.
02:08And then obviously some kind of overreaction extrapolations happening.
