00:00We're a hatch sleep family. I love that. He has two little ones. And I don't know, so it's been
00:05in my son's room since he was born. He's now seven. I don't know if he's going to have to
00:09go to college with this thing. Yes. Probably. My 13 year old still uses it. Seriously. So we're talking about
00:16a device and this is, again, this is, we have one that's seven years old, but it's a device that
00:20is a sound machine. It signals to him when he's actually allowed to get out of bed in the morning.
00:25We can change it for weekends versus weekdays. We can do just colors on weekends.
00:29So he doesn't actually wake up with the sound of birds like he does on a school day. So some
00:34days on a Saturday or Sunday, he'll sleep until 8 a.m. So he'll listen to it and it'll work.
00:38Yeah. He'll listen to it. And, you know, it just means we have to travel with a noise, a sound
00:42machine, too. So, Anne, where do you think this is all going? Because there's lots of products out there. We've
00:46been talking about Aura. We've been talking about Wolf. We've been talking about Fitbit Air, all of these things and
00:51more coming. So tell us how you guys differentiate yourselves and where you think this kind of space is going.
00:56Absolutely.
00:57Sleep is a massive problem in this country. We are not getting enough of it. And I think we all
01:03experience that in our everyday lives.
01:05And at Hatch, we are purpose-built in order to help you get good sleep. We are not about measuring
01:11your sleep and we are not about the perfect temperature.
01:13We are getting at the root of the problem with sleep, which is that we are so full up here
01:19when we go to bed at night that it is really hard to disconnect and to get the sleep that
01:24we need.
01:25And today we have a super special announcement. We are launching the most exciting product we've ever launched. It's to
01:32help adults get good sleep. It's called the Hatch Sleep Clock.
01:36And it is a new type of sleep tracker with one purpose. Its purpose is not to give you a
01:43sleep score. It's not to tell you how stressed you are.
01:45Its purpose is to put you to bed. That's the hardest thing that people struggle with.
01:51Right. And I think the challenge that grown-ups have, and it's sort of paradoxical because we're talking here in
01:59the technology conference, but it's getting the tech out of our bedrooms and getting the screens away from our eyes
02:07while we're trying to reset.
02:09So how do you do that?
02:10That is, you couldn't have said it better. So we, technology is amazing, but it also in the last 15,
02:1520 years, the technology world trades in the attention economy.
02:20They want us to consume and to scroll. And there's so many wonderful things about that. But at night, it's
02:27really hard to put it all away.
02:29And that's where we come in. We are the antidote to the attention economy. Our goal is to put you
02:35to sleep. And that's what the Hatch Sleep Clock does. And I'd love to tell you about how it works.
02:38Yeah. I'm curious because this whole idea of like putting technology away, but we're using technology to help us. So
02:44tell us what the process is.
02:46This is using technology for good. So our mission is to help you make time for you. So what we
02:51do, I'll tell you about my routine.
02:53But what I do at 10 p.m., that's when I told Hatch, hey, that's my goal. That's when I
02:58want to get in bed. And so right before 10 p.m., my Hatch, which is a bedside clock, lights
03:04up my room, lavender sky, sunset.
03:07And it plays me a beautiful, and it's kind of like a beacon for me to come to bed. I
03:11want to win, so I get in bed. And when I'm done with my reading or whatever, then my next
03:16challenge is to fall asleep.
03:18When I close my eyes, I'm ready to sleep. I touch the top of my Hatch, and it plays me
03:22an episode I like to listen to, The Nightly, which is our original podcast that helps me.
03:28It's just engaging enough that I want to listen to it, but not so engaging that I don't fall asleep
03:33to it every night.
03:34And that routine is what I do each and every night. You might like meditation. You might like a sleep
03:40story. We have 2,500 sounds to choose from.
03:43They are all screen-free, so you don't have to use your phone. They are all ad-free, so you
03:48don't get interrupted. And they are all science-backed.
03:51Well, what about couples? And one person wants something, the other person wants something else.
03:56My husband and I, who are co-founders, are a great example of this. So we have our Hatches side
04:00-by-side.
04:01And I actually listen to mine before he goes to bed, and he actually listens to his through headphones.
04:09But we each have one, and it tracks our sleep separately and helps us wind down separately.
04:15Okay. And where's your phone at this time?
04:17My phone is out of my room.
04:18I'm sorry that we're getting all personal, but if we're talking about sleep here, and the way for us to
04:23get more sleep is to get the phones out of the bedroom, we have to know.
04:25100%. Phones are the enemy, and that is the beautiful thing about Hatch, is you don't need your phone.
04:30You get everything that you need to fall asleep without meeting your phone.
04:33And by the way, I have to tell you about the contactless sleep tracking.
04:35And it will wake you up, too?
04:37It will wake you up, too, because that's the concern.
04:39With sunlight and then also with our proprietary alarms, you can choose from many, many.
04:43Right.
04:43But I've got to tell you about the contactless sleep tracking, because that's the coolest part about what we want.
04:48So this contactless sleep tracking gets built into the device. You don't have to wear or charge anything.
04:52And in the morning, what happens is, based on your routine and what we track, we give you feedback.
04:59Hey, you got to bed on time, or you didn't.
05:01This content that you listen to helps you get better REM sleep, helps you sleep deeper.
05:05And so we can really close the loop between your intention about going to sleep and what actually happened.
05:11And we can learn over time, and we help make your routine better and better, and something that's more and
05:15more delightful for you to enjoy going to bed, too.
05:19Well, here's the thing.
05:20You've got to kick the habit.
05:21That's the thing.
05:22You've got to kick the habit.
05:23These things are like cigarettes.
05:24But what about, there's falling asleep, and then there's quality of sleep.
05:29So how do you make sure that what you're getting is really good rest?
05:34So it's such a great part.
05:35The most important thing to get good rest is to get the right amount of duration, and so that your
05:40body can go through all of the sleep stages.
05:43So that's a really important part.
05:44But also the way to get high-quality sleep is to make sure that you are going to sleep peacefully.
05:50Science actually says that if you listen to something to distract your mind when you're going to sleep, you will
05:55fall asleep more easily, and you will stay asleep more easily.
05:57And that's actually spoken word or music.
06:00So it does help with quality sleep.
06:32And to go to bed, I actually play like a news roundup on my home device.
06:38Oh, that's not stressful at all.
06:39No, but it actually, I think I do the same thing.
06:41I'm a glutton for punishment.
06:42But I don't get through, like, more than one segment, and I'm out.
06:46And it's really kind of bizarre to me because I would think it would drive me crazy.
06:49Where do you see, more broadly, consumer hardware going?
06:53And how much of it ultimately is in our home?
06:56And how much of it at some point do we say, I'm very clear, I'm an Apple household, but it
07:02doesn't mean I just have Apple devices.
07:04Like, when do we at some point say we want it all cohesive?
07:07Or is that cohesive with other devices?
07:09I think the trend that we are seeing, especially in the bedroom, is people want a screen-free environment.
07:15They want peace.
07:16They want relaxation.
07:17And so everything we do is screen-free.
07:20No microphone, no camera.
07:21It is an intimate place.
07:23No microphone.
07:23No microphone, no camera.
07:25It is a sacred place for you, for you and your partner.
07:28And that is a huge part of what we do and will always do.
07:32On Carol's question about consumer tech being such a challenge, I mean, we're not talking margins like you have with
07:39software.
07:39We're not talking margins like you have over at NVIDIA.
07:42We're also talking about a part of the tech world that is really controlled by large companies, too.
07:50How challenging is it to be a small, independent, yet profitable company in the hardware space?
07:56I think you said the most beautiful world there.
07:58We are profitable.
07:59We are profitable and we are growing.
08:01It's the best of all worlds.
08:02I come from immigrant people and I believe that it is possible to be a David against a Goliath.
08:08And that's exactly who we are.
08:09We have 7 million devices in market and have had incredible success and raised very little money.
08:15And remind me, any subscription products at this point?
08:17There is a subscription.
08:18With the new?
08:19There is a subscription with the old and the new product and it's all based on content.
08:24We produce content for you every day and that is the subscription that you can...
08:29But if you don't want the content or don't need the content?
08:31If you don't want or need the content, you don't have to pay.
08:33And by the way, the data that you get with sleep tracking is free.
08:38We believe that it comes from you.
08:39We don't like that other people charge for that.
08:42It is free.
08:43It is included with the price of the device.
08:45All of your data.
08:46Wow.
08:47That is like such a different model.
08:49Why do you want to make sure that you do that?
08:51So to me, it's really important.
08:53For me, it's really important.
08:54It belongs to me.
08:55Like it is from my body.
08:56It belongs to me.
08:57The content that we're producing, that is us.
08:59We have real expense in creating that.
09:01And so we want to offer that to folks.
09:02But I believe that data is yours and I don't believe it's something appropriate to charge people for.
09:07So Anne, what's the next step for the company?
09:09Do you go public?
09:10Do you get acquired?
09:11The next step for the company is to continue delighting our customers.
09:14We have 7 million devices in the market.
09:16We are in one in three homes of babies and children.
09:19And that is the next step is to make sure we are as dominant helping adults with the core of
09:24the problem actually getting to bed as we are in baby.
09:28That's what's next for us.
09:29And we're super excited about it.
09:31Is the sleep market most dominant in the United States or is it really global?
09:36Is it the concern?
09:37It's a great question.
09:38So it is a global, massive issue in the developed world.
09:42And it really is because of our screens and the attention economy.
09:45And we just, you know, these are dopamine hits that we keep, keep getting.
09:49And it really is interesting.
09:50If you look over the last 20 years, search terms for sleep among the developed world have gone up 3x.
09:57So this is a real crisis.
09:58In 2014, the CDC said it was an epidemic.
10:01And it's only gotten worse since 2014.
10:03It's a huge problem.
10:05And data for data sake is not what's going to solve it.
10:10It's really getting at the root of the problem and helping me make time for myself to close my eyes
10:15and get to sleep.
10:16Can I have one more doctor say to me, are you getting a good night's sleep?
10:19Oh, hey, I have a question for your doctor.
10:21Is your doctor getting enough sleep?
10:22I know.
10:23It's a really great question.
