An investigation is underway after a system error led to thousands of direct debit payments being taken early in North Tyneside. The council says refunds have been issued and support is in place for affected residents.

00:08The council says around 32,000 payments were collected ahead of schedule on Friday the 29th of May instead of

00:18The authority says refunds have been issued and it is working with its provider Equans to establish what went wrong.
00:25Finance chief David Mason says assurances will be sought to prevent a repeat.
00:30Opposition councillors have demanded answers.
00:33Labour says the system was outsourced under the previous administration and that services will be brought back under direct council
00:41control when the current contract ends.
