00:00This weather phenomenon could be the strongest ever recorded.
00:04What kind of impact would a super El Nino have on the world's weather patterns that we see today?
00:10Today, WMO released its El Nino update with more information in terms of this development of El Nino
00:21that is very likely to emerge in June, August 2026.
00:25There is a very high probability of El Nino next couple of months and to continue thereafter,
00:34at least until the end of the forecast period, that is by end of this year.
00:38So we'll have El Nino that will potentially strengthen during the northern hemisphere summer and autumn.
00:48However, some uncertainty still remains about its peak and strength and timing.
00:55With most forecast models suggesting it will be at least moderate and possibly strong.
01:01In the past, we know that El Nino, strong El Ninos of 2023, 2024 and 2015, 2016 led to significant
01:11impacts in many regions.
01:13Normally, these impacts are related with strong climate anomalies and weather extremes that become more likely in these different regions.
01:26And of course, because there are many sectors that are climate reliant, depend on climate in terms of rainfall,
01:34in terms of temperature conditions, these sectors are also impacted, just as an example in 2023-2024, El Nino,
01:44we had a severe disruption in terms of the Panama Canal with impacts in terms of global transportation because of
01:52low water in that region.
01:58There are also other examples in terms of drought in southern Africa and the strong El Nino of 2015-2016
02:07that led to a significant decrease in terms of agricultural productivity.
02:11But there are also health-related impacts with some diseases become more prevalent and more spread,
02:21as well as impacts in terms of energy with some regions suffering because of lack of water, for instance, for
02:33hydropower generation.
02:35Thank you very much.
