00:00This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America.
00:04Each, each of us is equal before the law.
00:08No one, no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States.
00:14With today's Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity, that fundamentally changed.
00:21For all, for all practical purposes, today's decision almost certainly means
00:26that there are virtually no limits on what a President can do.
00:30This is a fundamentally new principle, and it's a dangerous precedent.
00:35Nearly four years ago, my predecessor sent a violent mob to the U.S. Capitol
00:40to stop the peaceful transfer of power.
00:44We all saw it with our own eyes, and the American people deserve to have an answer in the courts
00:49before the upcoming election.
00:51The public has a right to know the answer about what happened on January 6th
00:56before they asked to vote again this year.
00:59I know I will respect the limits of the presidential powers that I have for three and a half years.
01:04But any President, including Donald Trump, will now be free to ignore the law.
01:10I concur with Justice Sotomayor's dissent today.
01:14She hears what she said.
01:15She said, in every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law.
01:22With fear for our democracy, I dissent.
01:25End of quote.
