The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter is crawling with hungry bear cubs. What's on the menu? A nutritious smoothie, filled with excess supermarket produce.

Watch WILD BEAR RESCUE Wednesdays at 9|8c on EarthX.

About WILD BEAR RESCUE:
The bear pens at Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter are crawling with a record 40 orphaned black bear cubs—climbing, wrestling, and rolling fuzz-balls—each distinct in looks and personality. Rescuing and caring for these cubs are the passion of Angelika Langen, the shelter’s resident "Mamma Bear." While Angelika handles the black bear cubs, her husband Peter runs the world’s only grizzly rehab program. With the help of their son Michael, daughter Tanja, son-in-law Shawn, and a team of driven volunteers, they save sick and injured orphan cubs and build them up for hibernation. In the spring when the cubs re-emerge as big healthy yearlings, the family transports them to remote sites across British Columbia where they are released for their second chance at life in the wild.

00:02These are hungry bears, hungry growing bears.
00:07So these smoothies are a way of feeding the bears all the nutrients they need with the least waste possible.
00:19There are three local supermarkets in town that pack up all of their old fruit that they can't sell anymore.
00:24So we can feed our animals, it's pretty much the only way our animals stay fed.
00:29The bears also get a specially made milk powder mixed into their smoothies.
00:34But there's a problem. Angelica didn't expect this many cubs so early in the year.
00:42We have 16 bears in care now.
00:45They're really hungry.
00:47We usually get three or four, so that's four times as much as the highest number that I was budgeting
00:52for.
00:54The bucket of milk is 360 Canadian dollars.
00:58It lasts us about five, six days right now.
01:01We have a fair amount of money that we need to raise.
01:06There is no government funding, so the shelter relies on private donations to keep all the cubs fed.
01:12We put a press release out. We asked for help.
01:16Angelica speaking, can I help you?
01:18Well, we're having a very, very unusual spring.
01:21We have all these babies and they all need milk.
01:24We're looking at a busy summer, I think.
01:26So we'll see you in a small session.
