00:02In British Columbia's Balkley Valley there's a one-of-a-kind sanctuary for
00:11bear cubs and other orphaned wildlife we started the shelter back in 1990 I
00:23could use some help here it was meant to be just a little thing to help out
00:29every once in a while when something happened here locally and yeah it's
00:33kind of mushroomed from there the little cranky one is back in 26 years ago
00:44Angelica Langen and her husband Peter started the Northern Lights wildlife
00:47shelter my parents were both zookeepers in in Germany so they had a fair bit of
00:57experience and felt that they could help in a small way with animals that had
01:02been impacted by human activity they went to the government with this proposal and
01:06hey well we'll lend a helping hand all cheerful and happy and the government
01:09said no
01:10from my way Peter close the door and that launched a four-year battle to try and
01:16get permits to be allowed to do this and you know now we're one of the largest
01:20bear rehabilitators in the world what sort of operation I think the the most
01:28encompassing word would be crazy
01:31you
