00:25Look, Kid. Didn't you see where it said in the ad that we were looking for people with
00:29Cars?
00:31A bike is not a car.
00:33Let me explain. A car's got something called an engine. A bike has only got pedals, you push around
00:40The Mikazuki Five is a hard-working, lovely bicycle and I
00:43There's a difference between a bicycle and a car! When I say car, I mean car!
00:48Oh boy, I think I've blown this one. Looks like I won't be working here any time soon.
00:53Here, have some tea please.
00:55Oh, thank you so very much.
00:57Don't mind the boss. We're really short-handed. Our working conditions are so harsh that almost nobody ever answers our
01:04ads.
01:05Oh.
01:05Isn't that right, boss?
01:06Thanks so much for sharing. Still, could you be ready to start today?
01:11Oh, of course I can! Thank you very much, sir!
01:14Alright, Chi. Show Bicycle Boy around the place.
01:18Yes, sir.
01:21So her name's Chi. She's a cute and kind co-worker. This is going to be great!
01:26And these are the desks where the animators work.
01:28I'm so pleased to meet you!
01:43I guess the mornings in animation studios begin a little late.
01:48I guess for a minute.
01:59I'll be right back.
02:00I guess for a minute.
02:05I guess we're ready to start today.
02:17So we'll be right back.
04:44Oh, she's got a nice body.
04:47I'd say her chest measurement is at least 33.
04:49No, make that 33 and a half inches.
04:52Seek up.
04:53Wow, nice tits and brains.
04:55She's really one hot mama.
04:57I may be an administrator, but since I'm just a trainee, I get to do most of the odd jobs
05:02when I'm not running errands.
05:03But the process of producing animation is full of things I never thought about, so it's all very educational.
05:09For example, the people that draw and make the drawings move are referred to as animators.
05:15They do this by drawing dozens and dozens of pictures.
05:18When the pictures are photographed in sequence, one frame of film at a time, the drawing appears to move.
05:23Animators are further subdivided into two groups.
05:26First, the key animators draw the most important poses.
05:29Then the in-between animators fill in the rest of the movie.
05:32It's a time-consuming process.
05:34What's up, Kentaro?
05:35The animation sheet.
05:38Are you supposed to draw stuff like that?
05:41Sure.
05:42This company does a lot of adult animation, too.
05:45Those breasts look just like secure asses!
05:47So you recognize them!
05:49Actually, I was using this book as a reference.
05:51Oh!
05:52See?
05:54Oh, man, that's really great!
05:56That's my job!
05:57Of course, I like breasts that are shaped like this!
06:00Hey, you're pretty good at drawing them!
06:02You think so?
06:03I do a lot of doodling in my notebook.
06:05Hmm, personally, I prefer the ones where the nipples point up.
06:09Yes, but the upper curve looks best when it's round and just like so.
06:13Don't you think?
06:14Wow, you really know your boobs!
06:17Kentaro!
06:18I told you to clean up the place before the guests get here!
06:21I'm sorry, sir!
06:22Get on it right now!
06:24I'm on it.
06:25Hang in there.
06:40Please!
06:41Come right in!
06:43Watch your step!
06:45Oh!
06:46Oh!
06:47Hey, boss!
06:47Who are they?
06:49Just the sponsor and the original author.
06:52Hello, director!
06:54Huh?
06:54Hi!
06:55Have you met Mr. Engawa?
06:57Pleased to meet you!
06:59Of course!
06:59Cars!
07:02Um, excuse me, who is that guy?
07:05That's Tatsuya Engawa.
07:06His name's on the poster.
07:08What?
07:08The ultra-popular best-selling author of Golden Girls that's featured in weekly comic Bungee Jump?
07:13Who can draw erotic illustrations better than anyone else and is the richest person alive and is really slick and
07:17handsome?
07:18That's Tatsuya Engawa?
07:19Uh-huh.
07:21And that's my idea of how the film will come out.
07:23Okay, director!
07:25I love it!
07:26But you'd better make this film gripping!
07:28I wanna grab the audience by the balls!
07:30I'll grab them and squeeze!
07:31They won't be able to sit down for a year!
07:33Excuse me!
07:34Could I have your autograph?
07:38Who's this?
07:39Kentaro OA, age 25, production administrator and training.
07:43Are you insane?
07:44Don't you know that Mr. Engawa's much too busy to spend the time to give an autograph to a mere
07:48peon like you?
07:49Okay.
07:49Oh, he's so generous, too.
07:51He sure is!
07:53There.
07:54Ooh!
07:54Thank you so much, sir!
07:56Well, if the meeting's over, do you wanna go get something to drink?
07:59Liquor me up!
08:04Now, let's talk about the production schedule.
08:08You have a month and a half to go.
08:10You will make your deadline, won't you?
08:12Mr. Engawa's designs are so detailed that they're kinda hard to animate.
08:16You never mentioned that before.
08:19Kentaro!
08:20Have you finished all that cleaning yet?
08:21Uh, I'll go clean!
08:23Well, we'll adjust the schedule as necessary.
08:25I think it would be in your best interest.
08:27And another thing.
08:29I don't think it was appropriate to call anyone a mere anything.
08:32I'll make a note of that.
08:34Mm-hmm.
08:35Mm-hmm.
08:36Mm-hmm.
08:37Yes!
08:38It's so educational!
08:40You're really weird, kid.
08:42Wow!
08:43It looks like we're going to have to complete this animation project in just a month and
08:47a half!
08:48The number of jobs I have to do keeps growing and growing.
08:51And since I don't have a car, I have to carry everything on my bike!
08:55Stacks of in-between drawings and animation cells really can get heavy when you have to
09:00carry a lot of them.
09:01Sometimes the going is pretty steep, especially since a lot of the animators now work out
09:05of their own homes.
09:06Their daily routines are all different, which means that I've got to be on standby at the
09:09company all night long!
09:11Um, Mr. Wakamoto?
09:13Hmm?
09:13Do you have any more clean-ups for me?
09:15Here!
09:16Thank you!
09:17Mr. Wakamoto's the chief animator.
09:19There are a lot of animators and they all draw just a little differently, so it's his job
09:23to make sure that they all draw the same way.
09:26Oh, wow!
09:27You're a better artist than even Mr. Ingawa!
09:30Oh, thanks a lot.
09:32The film that we're steamrollering ahead on is an original story by Tatsuya Ingawa.
09:36It's called The Valley Where the Oni Screams.
09:39It's a fantasy spectacular about a group of kindergarteners on a field trip who accidentally
09:43break a seal imprisoning an oni.
09:45It's a great story, but just meeting our schedule has become an equally fantastic spectacle,
09:49too.
09:50Thank you for the drawings!
09:52Kentaro?
09:53Are you going to go outside?
09:54Yeah!
09:54I'm delivering some in-betweens!
09:56Could you get me a beef bowl for Matsuyas on your way back?
09:59No problem!
10:00Did you say Matsuyas?
10:01Uh-huh.
10:01Hey, Kentaro!
10:02Get me a large beef bowl!
10:03Did you flavor beef for me?
10:04Yeah, me too!
10:05Large red beef combo, no onions, please.
10:07Could you get me a beef curry with a raw egg to go?
10:09He supersized mine!
10:11When animators get really busy, they eat less and less outside.
10:15Their meals usually consist of prepackaged meals sold in convenience stores, mixed with beef
10:20bowls and lots of instant ramen noodles.
10:22Hmm.
10:23They aren't getting the balanced nutrition they need, and the amount of unburnable trash
10:27in the building is building up fast.
10:29This can't be good.
10:33Hmm?
10:34Cooking yourself something?
10:36Actually, I was making a hot vegetable dish for the animators.
10:39I don't want them getting scurvy.
10:41Wow, you're really into it.
10:43Well, I've worked in a restaurant before.
10:45You're doing great work, Kentaro.
10:47Will you let me taste test it when you're done?
10:49Anything for you, Chi!
10:51Oh, Miss Chi is so sweet!
10:54She's always so encouraging to me!
10:56Yeah!
10:57Uh...
10:59Oh...
11:04That...
11:04That cute Miss Chi just placed her cute pink bottom on this!
11:09I wonder...
11:10If it's still warm?
11:12Oh, God!
11:13What am I thinking?
11:14Why do I think these things?
11:16I'm bad!
11:17So bad, but...
11:19But I can't stop myself!
11:21Oh!
11:22Hey, what are you doing doing this...
11:24...On...
11:25On...
11:31Yes...
11:31ooh...
11:32...and it's good.
11:33Mmm...
11:37So much junk.
11:39Oh, my.
11:40Agh!
11:42What a mess!
11:44This is so disgusting.
11:46Man, how can they even tell where anything is?
11:48There's garbage everywhere! There's even leftover food!
11:54Right! I'll clean it up!
12:04Uh, Kintaro?
12:06Yeah?
12:07Did you just straighten up my desk?
12:09Yeah!
12:11Idiot! Now I don't know where anything is anymore!
12:16Hmm, you should never mess with an animator's desk!
12:20Good!
12:21It's great that you're so enthusiastic, but be more careful, Kin-chan!
12:26Uh-huh! It doesn't, it doesn't know!
12:29Uh-huh!
12:31Ah!
12:32Damn it, I scratched my new palms!
12:40Oh, right! What do you have to say for yourself? What kind of progress report is this?
12:45You've just got three weeks to go, and you haven't even started photographing the cells yet!
12:49Would you like to explain that?
12:51It's fine. We'll start shooting a first batch of cells next week.
12:55And will you be able to make the deadline with that?
12:59Well, actually, the director's running just a little bit behind.
13:03We were hoping that we might be able to work out a little delay in the timetable.
13:07How could you ask me to negotiate at this stage?
13:10You were planning this from the beginning, weren't you?
13:12No! No, of course not!
13:13You do understand that this is a business, don't you?
13:16You're a subcontractor on a manufactured product, and you've got a deadline to meet or else!
13:21But-
13:21It is not like we're asking you to make a great work of art!
13:24But consider how Mr. Ngala feels about the project, and the rest of the steps-
13:27Irrelevant!
13:28That has nothing to do with the schedule!
13:30Well, that might be the case, but still, artistic aspirations are-
13:34Enough! If you check your contract-
13:36You-
13:40I got it!
13:41I got it!
13:42I got it!
13:45Right on!
13:47Kitchen!
13:49Legerous tinkgringer!
13:51Alright, if that's the way you want to play, so be it!
13:53If you miss your deadline by so much as an hour, I'll destroy you!
13:58Go ahead, make my year!
14:02Uh, boss?
14:04Huh?
14:05How about that deadline?
14:07My section won't be finished on time.
14:09Will we be okay, boss?
14:11We're behind schedule in the coloring department, too!
14:16Alright, as you just heard, this has become the gravest crisis in our company's history.
14:21The odds may seem to be stacked against us.
14:23Indeed, at this point, it may even seem hopeless.
14:25But still, we've got to bite the bullet and complete this film on time anyway!
14:30We will finish it!
14:32Well, I don't suppose we have any alternative.
14:34Hmm, we're really pushing it, though.
14:37Hmm...
14:38Right!
14:38As soon as the director gets here, we'll have to completely reorganize the production sequencing!
14:42I want everybody to go back and review-
14:44The director's been hit by a car and is in the hospital!
14:53Well, that's it, boy!
14:54Well, it's all over now!
14:56Mark is thrown away!
14:58Hey, boss!
14:59Don't look at my face!
15:01Don't!
15:03Get close!
15:04To me!
15:05At!
15:06All!
15:25You gotta get your spirits up, Chi!
15:27It'll all work out!
15:30Thanks for what you did back there.
15:33For taking the heat off me.
15:34Uh, did I do something noble unknowingly?
15:37If I hadn't spilled that tea, none of this would have happened.
15:40What are you saying?!
15:42That wasn't your fault, Chi!
15:44It was a giant accident!
15:46Yeah!
15:46It was any single person's fault!
15:48Uh, not at all!
15:51Uh, but-but it'll be okay, Chi!
15:54Come on, hang in there!
15:55Yeah!
15:55This is the last man to dash!
15:58But my job is so...unimportant.
16:02What?!
16:03All I do is paint cells all day long.
16:05It doesn't matter that I always make my deadline.
16:08Nobody expects anything out of me.
16:11All I do is paint!
16:16Ugh...
16:18But there are no jobs that are unimportant,
16:22and what you do is extraordinary.
16:25What?
16:25It's true, Chi!
16:27Don't you believe me?!
16:28Animation is pictures that move in color with real sound and voices!
16:32Comics, novels, and paintings can't do that!
16:35Plus, you can do all sorts of things with the characters
16:37that you can never get away with doing in live action films or videos!
16:41That's what makes animation so unique and wonderful!
16:44Oh!
16:45And it's the skills and talents of dozens of brilliant artists
16:48all working together to make it all happen!
16:51Don't you see?!
16:52Animation is incredibly cool!
16:55So let's not give up now!
16:57We gotta go for the gusto!
16:59It's all a matter of studying!
17:01Of studying?
17:09Don't you understand that it's impossible?
17:12Yeah, the director's flat on his back, kid.
17:15Who's gonna check the shots?
17:16Well, I'll carry the key animation to the hospital!
17:20That's not the only problem.
17:22There are a lot of shots that haven't even been worked out yet.
17:25This ain't no milk run.
17:26But we could all help each other out!
17:28Mindless effort isn't gonna get us any nearer
17:30to finishing this thing!
17:31We've already got more work than we can possibly do!
17:35I got it!
17:36We could use computers like Disney does!
17:38Don't be stupid!
17:38Doing animation with computers ain't no walk in the park!
17:41And CG takes a whole lot of time!
17:44It's expensive as hell, too!
17:46Who's going to pay for it?
17:47Yeah!
17:48There's just no way in hell!
17:49That's right!
17:50We'll never make the deadline!
17:51It just can't be helped, young man!
17:52Hey, it's not like it's your fault, Kentaro!
17:55Yeah, I mean, sometimes you just gotta let it go!
17:57Maybe they're hiring over at Speed Racer!
17:58You know, things might be different!
18:00We knew someone who worked in a computer graphics firm!
18:05It has come to me!
18:08Of course!
18:09That's the answer!
18:10Friends that do CG!
18:11What?
18:13Huh?
18:21Yes, tea and software.
18:24Kentaro!
18:25Oh, God!
18:27You don't know how long I looked for you!
18:29What are you doing now?
18:31What?
18:32CG?
18:33Uh-huh.
18:34Animation?
18:34Well, we don't specialize in computer graphics, but yes, we could certainly animate wireframe models that could be outputted onto
18:42cells.
18:44Yes, I'll be waiting. Bye-bye.
18:48Okay, everybody! We have an emergency!
18:51Hey, guys! I gotta go to a meeting! I'll be right back!
18:55Steady, steady, steady, steady, steady, steady, steady!
18:58Thank you so much, Kentaro.
19:00I'm here to learn!
19:02Are there any other problems?
19:03Hmm, I need a reference for shot 218.
19:06Nine, seven, six.
19:08Oh, thank heavens! I'm so glad to hear from you, Kentaro!
19:12That's great, but I have a favor to ask of you!
19:15Film of me swimming? Will an 8mm video be fine?
19:19Oh, thank you so very much! Yes! Yes!
19:23Do you have a fax machine? I'll send it right off then!
19:26I don't know how I can thank you for all of this!
19:44Here's the reference video you needed!
19:46Thanks a bunch!
19:47Hey, what about shop 230?
19:50Daddy! Daddy!
19:52Kentaro, get those cells to the photographers!
19:54Right away! I need them tomorrow! I'm begging you!
19:57Hello there! I'm from the Ganea Noodle Shop.
20:00I've come to make sure you're all well-fed and healthy while you work.
20:03I've got some lovely udon. Would you like to try my noodles?
20:08Yeah!
20:10It seems that animator types are especially attracted to girls like Noriko.
20:14How very educational.
20:18Kentaro, help me peel the paper off these cells!
20:20Oh, sure!
20:25Here! We need this check by tomorrow!
20:27Yeah, you can check this out!
20:28I'm begging you!
20:30Ah! The voice actresses just bailed on us!
20:32I know some girls were good at faking things!
20:35Um, hi there!
20:37This is so cool!
20:39We're so glad to be working here!
20:41Girls these days aren't nervous or shy at all.
20:43These two will work fine.
20:45I thought they would, sir.
20:53Oh, boss!
20:54Damn it! We've gotten this far, but the lab work is gonna blow the deadline!
20:58Kitaro!
20:59I've got it covered!
21:00This golden boy is our only hope!
21:03No! There is another!
21:08Just leave the racing up to me!
21:10That's less real!
21:13Ha-da!
21:23Ha!
21:25Ha-a!
21:26Ha!
21:26Ha!
21:29Ha!
21:30Ha!
21:31Ha!
21:33Ha!
21:52Too cool, too cool, too cool!
22:00Huh? What's going on?
22:07Could it be that they hate it?
22:09It's because I screwed around with some stuff in it!
22:13Oh, God, what am I going to do?
22:21Whoo!
22:51Oh!
22:52That was lovely!
22:55Oh, good gracious!
22:56Oh, no.
22:57Look at that!
22:58Oh, look at that!
22:59Oh, look at that!
23:00Yes!
23:02Yes!
23:03Yes! Yes! I love it!
23:05If it were a woman, I'd marry it, Gull and Susie!
23:08Huh?
23:11Oh!
23:14Oh, boy, I wonder if that's equal.
23:17Yeah, they left it open where it could be, huh?
23:19That'd be great.
23:21All right, I'll be expecting the final edit to be delivered in two days.
23:25We'll have it ready by daybreak!
23:26All right, it looks like all we've got is a little tiny bit of clean-up work to do.
23:31Boss! Boss! Kentaro is gone!
23:33His bicycle and luggage are all gone!
23:37He ran away again?!
23:39I don't believe this guy!
23:41This is getting ridiculous!
23:43You may never be able to get a hold of him!
23:45He's not getting away this time!
23:47He's not leaving me a virgin!
23:48Have my feet deflowered!
23:51How many will fit in that car of yours?
23:53Hey, Chi, aren't you going with the others after Kentaro?
23:58Yes, but I have work to do first. Somebody's gotta make sure this film has an ending!
24:05Kentaro Oei, age 25.
24:07He withdrew from Tokyo University Law School, but only after he had already completed all the requirements for graduation.
24:13Ever since, he's traveled the highways and byways of Japan, trying out new jobs and positions, and learning about life
24:20to the fullest.
24:21Striving ahead on his trusty bicycle, the Mikazuki 5, he continues forward, seeking his destiny.
24:27And who knows, perhaps he's destined to save the Japanese animation industry, or even the world.
24:33Or, maybe not.
24:49Kentaro, you taught me how fun this job could be.
