00:00:09Once upon a time, before you were born, even before I was born, the movies were born.
00:00:19One of the great gifts they gave us, perhaps the greatest gift, was laughter.
00:00:25In its earliest days, there were kings of comedy. Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd.
00:00:35And across time, the movies have lifted us up when the world brought us down.
00:00:41Film, television, no matter the medium, laughter has always proved to be the best medicine.
00:00:50Some have talents that burst beyond the screen and onto the stage.
00:00:56They create characters that have us look inside ourselves.
00:01:02Whoa. Okay, like, you're really supposed to be, like, my best friend.
00:01:05And there are some, very few, that did it all.
00:01:10It's good to be the king.
00:01:11But tonight, beyond the echo of laughter, we honor a man full of greater surprises
00:01:21and one who broke barriers to drive culture forward.
00:01:27Ladies and gentlemen, Eddie Murphy.
00:01:31Eddie Murphy.
00:01:33Eddie Murphy.
00:01:42Eddie Murphy.
00:01:43Eddie Murphy.
00:01:46Eddie Murphy.
00:01:54Eddie Murphy.
00:01:56Eddie Murphy.
00:01:57Eddie Murphy.
00:01:59Eddie Murphy.
00:01:59Eddie Murphy.
00:02:01Eddie Murphy.
00:02:02Eddie Murphy.
00:02:03Eddie Murphy.
00:02:03Eddie Murphy.
00:02:25From the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the highest honor for a career in film,
00:02:30the AFI Life Achievement Award, a tribute to Eddie Murphy,
00:02:34with Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Eva Longoria, Chris Rock,
00:02:38Dave Vine, Joy Randolph, Kenan Thompson, Stevie Wonder, Robert Townsend, Bill Burr,
00:02:43Judge Reinhold, Arsenio Hall, Dave Chappelle, Mike Myers, Martin Lawrence, Spike Lee, and many more,
00:02:51with a special performance from Dreamgirls by Jennifer Hudson.
00:02:57Ladies and gentlemen, Kevin Hart.
00:03:05Welcome. Welcome to the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award.
00:03:10This is a tribute to Edward Reagan Murphy.
00:03:16That is his given name, Edward Reagan Murphy.
00:03:20Now, look, I think we should take time and we should break this down.
00:03:23Edward. Edward originates from the Old English name Ed Weird,
00:03:28which translates to protector of wealth, right?
00:03:32And we know that that's true.
00:03:33Eddie, we think you've done a great job with wealth
00:03:36through your duration of time in his career.
00:03:38And then there's Reagan.
00:03:40Reagan is an Irish name that translates from O'Reagan to royal child.
00:03:46This is true.
00:03:47So we basically have a rich king.
00:03:49So far, this tracks, right?
00:03:52And then comes Murphy.
00:03:55This is where I got fucked up.
00:03:57Because I said, well, who fucked who?
00:04:00Like, who...
00:04:03What happened to give us Eddie Murphy?
00:04:05And it's a lot of questions that I had,
00:04:07but regardless of the who, the how, and the what,
00:04:09it tells us everything that we need to know about Edward Reagan Murphy.
00:04:12Everything so much that we call the man Eddie.
00:04:15And the reason why we call him Eddie is because he's our pal.
00:04:17He's our friend.
00:04:18And even you white people think he's your friend.
00:04:21Uh, he's given us the gift of laughter across generations.
00:04:25And, you know, it's not just about the laughs.
00:04:28And we'll see that tonight.
00:04:29This is a man who can do it all.
00:04:31We're talking about comedy.
00:04:32We're talking drama.
00:04:33We're talking singing, dancing.
00:04:35He can curse like a motherfucker.
00:04:36He's special at it.
00:04:37Uh, he can play any part.
00:04:39And in fact, he likes to play all parts.
00:04:42I mean, think about The Nutty Professor,
00:04:43where he played seven different characters, right?
00:04:47And tonight, tonight, he is playing three.
00:04:50He is this guy.
00:04:52Take a look.
00:04:52Yep.
00:04:53That's right.
00:04:54Right?
00:04:55And this person.
00:04:56He's gonna be this person right here.
00:04:58Yep.
00:04:59Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.
00:05:02And wait.
00:05:03And yes, this person too.
00:05:04One more.
00:05:04Go ahead.
00:05:05Oh, that's me.
00:05:05Okay, wait.
00:05:07Look, Eddie, genuinely, man, I have to tell you,
00:05:11and I want to take this time to say what I have said
00:05:14in quick passings over the years.
00:05:17You truly mean everything to me in this business.
00:05:20I stand where I stand today because of the work
00:05:22that you did before me, the doors that you opened up before me.
00:05:25Um, you are a brother, a mentor, an inspiration.
00:05:29God damn it, you're an idol.
00:05:31And I'm lucky, I'm lucky to call you a friend, man.
00:05:34I-I truly am grateful for the relationship that we have.
00:05:37And it's an honor to be here tonight to celebrate you
00:05:40and to kick off what is long overdue, my friend,
00:05:42an evening in your honor from AFI,
00:05:45and the highest honor for a career in film.
00:05:48Eddie Murphy.
00:05:52I was born in, uh, Brooklyn, New York,
00:05:55Kings County Hospital.
00:05:57Yes, I remember the hospital very well.
00:06:01In Brooklyn, we lived right down the street
00:06:03from Lois Gates Theater.
00:06:05So we used to go to movies all the time.
00:06:07The very first time I saw, uh, the original Planet of the Apes
00:06:11was in the Lois Gates Theater.
00:06:13And I remember the reveal of the Statue of Liberty
00:06:16and the audible, the audience, and, oh!
00:06:19And I was, oh!
00:06:22So we moved out to Long Island, it was, like, quiet.
00:06:25Felt like we moved to the country.
00:06:27Like, all that shit they was talking
00:06:28in the Civil Rights Movement afterwards, you know?
00:06:31We, you know, getting to the mountaintop and going, you know?
00:06:33We felt like we had got there, you know?
00:06:35Like, yeah, we, we're in the promised land.
00:06:39I watched a lot of TV.
00:06:41I Dream of Jeannie and Gilligan's Island,
00:06:43Andy Griffith's show.
00:06:45I was watching Andy Griffith last night,
00:06:47and I realized, I was like, hey, you know something?
00:06:49You don't see no black people in the end, no, but...
00:06:56Not, not one.
00:07:02That's why I was so happy and whistling.
00:07:04When no brothers in the neighborhood.
00:07:09I asked for a ventriloquist dummy when I was about nine.
00:07:12So very early on, I paint pictures with words
00:07:16and tell stories and new characters and stuff.
00:07:18And I knew I could make a room of people laugh.
00:07:23My brother, Charlie, is the only person to ever get the best of me.
00:07:28You know, we used to call it ranking on each other.
00:07:30But it's not competitive.
00:07:32That's part of the culture and, uh, was really big in the house.
00:07:37When I first heard Richard Pryor's album,
00:07:40that was when it was like, oh, I'm, that's me.
00:07:43That's who I'm gonna be.
00:07:44I'm gonna be that.
00:07:45I'm gonna do what this guy is doing.
00:07:47I would sign in people's yearbooks, Eddie Murphy Future Plans Comedian.
00:07:52Now you have proof to your children that you knew me.
00:07:55I signed that in everybody's yearbook.
00:07:58I started going into the city around 17.
00:08:01It was 1979, 78.
00:08:03So I was usually the only black person and the only young person.
00:08:08Remember?
00:08:09You'd be outside playing here.
00:08:14I'm George!
00:08:17I'm George!
00:08:19The Ice Cream Man Comed!
00:08:21The Ice Cream Man Comed!
00:08:24Mom!
00:08:27Please welcome, Tracy Mourning.
00:08:37Eddie Murphy is an icon.
00:08:40He's an inspiration.
00:08:41Yeah, he's an inspiration for me and many others.
00:08:45So when I found out that he and I were going to be playing in the sketch together
00:08:49at the SNL 50th anniversary show, I was immediately excited.
00:08:55And then I found out he was going to be playing me in the sketch.
00:09:02I said, what the?
00:09:03Oh, my God.
00:09:05One of the greatest performers ever was going to be playing me in the sketch with me.
00:09:12My God, what if he's funnier than me?
00:09:15Why are you playing me?
00:09:21Without Eddie, there is no Axel Foley.
00:09:25There's no Reggie Hammond.
00:09:27There's no Hercules.
00:09:29None of that.
00:09:32Eddie Murphy changed the movie business and paved the way for an entire generation of actors.
00:09:39Eddie Murphy has made the world laugh.
00:09:42And right now, the world really, really, really, I mean, really needs that.
00:09:50Hey, yo, listen.
00:09:52I'm one of the lucky people who can honestly say Eddie Murphy is my friend.
00:09:58He's my OG.
00:09:59He, and I think he my biological father.
00:10:06He know it.
00:10:08I look just like him.
00:10:18To my friend.
00:10:20First of all, I love you.
00:10:21And for all moviegoers all around the world, I say, thank you, Eddie Murphy.
00:10:36It's Saturday Night Live!
00:10:41From Eddie Murphy!
00:10:42When I got the opportunity to audition for Saturday Night Live, my first reaction, it
00:10:48wasn't like, okay, let's go.
00:10:49My first reaction was like, Saturday Night Live.
00:10:53Sketches?
00:10:54Zaz, we're going.
00:10:56Well, it ain't exactly so easy, Bill.
00:10:58Everybody keeps comparing us to the old cast.
00:11:00The original cast left, and the audiences was like, fuck this show, and fuck y'all.
00:11:07You're going down the street, and people be like, hey, let's do Saturday Night Live.
00:11:11Yes.
00:11:12Fuck y'all.
00:11:13Cleveland, judge ruling all high school basketball teams must have two white players.
00:11:18Fair and just comment.
00:11:19Cleveland high school student Raheem Abdul-Muhammad.
00:11:22What's the story, Raheem?
00:11:24Yo, baby.
00:11:25Look, I've been a junior at Cleveland High going on seven years now.
00:11:29Eddie's first weekend update appearance.
00:11:31It was wild to watch him come out to, like, a smattering of just claps.
00:11:35Like, just kind of, no one knows who this guy is.
00:11:38Anytime we get something going good, y'all got to move in on it.
00:11:41In the 60s, we wore platform shoes.
00:11:43Then y'all had to wear platform shoes.
00:11:45In the early 70s, we braided our hair.
00:11:47Then in the late 70s, y'all had to braid your hair.
00:11:49Now it's 1980.
00:11:50We on welfare.
00:11:51By the end of next year, y'all going to be on welfare, too.
00:11:58By the time he finished, Abreu is.
00:12:01Hi, I'm Buckley.
00:12:02Remember me?
00:12:04Get in with me, catch his claim.
00:12:06The man's disgrace to boxing.
00:12:08Just in for my new book entitled, I Want to Be a Whore.
00:12:11What a silly Negro.
00:12:15We used to have in the house the Best of Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live tape.
00:12:20And so I knew all of those sketches by heart.
00:12:24Buckwheat getting assassinated.
00:12:25James Brown, celebrity hot tub.
00:12:27Y'all get in the hot tub?
00:12:28Yeah!
00:12:29Willie made me sweat?
00:12:30Yeah!
00:12:30Y'all get in the hot tub?
00:12:32Yeah!
00:12:32Willie made me what?
00:12:33A sketch that I really like of his was, uh, Mr. Robinson.
00:12:36Hi, boy and girl.
00:12:41I'm all alone today, but that don't mean you can stay too long,
00:12:45because my wife will be home from work soon.
00:12:48Can you say bitch?
00:12:53I'm sure you can.
00:12:54That's our special word today, you know.
00:12:57Come see.
00:13:03This is the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.
00:13:05I remember Gumby as a kid, but I don't remember understanding why it was funny.
00:13:16It was like, what is happening here exactly?
00:13:18I have no idea what he was, what it was, or what it was supposed to be, but I liked
00:13:23it.
00:13:34Gumby is based off of a manager that I had named King Broda.
00:13:39He's the one that would talk like this, and he would say, uh, you know, like,
00:13:42Frank Sinatra threw a salad in my face, and I told him, Frank, you don't throw a salad in my
00:13:48face.
00:13:48I'm King Broda.
00:13:50I'm Gumby, damn it.
00:13:51I'm Gumby, damn it!
00:13:52You don't talk to me that way!
00:13:55Eddie, I just wanted to say, I really wanted to be there tonight, but life has me all bent
00:14:01out of shape right now.
00:14:02I will say, here and now, it has been an honor to be your inspiration for making people laugh.
00:14:09That's the truth.
00:14:10Oh, and one more thing.
00:14:13I'm Gumby, damn it!
00:14:17Please welcome Kenan Thompson.
00:14:22Good evening.
00:14:24Good evening, everyone.
00:14:25Good evening.
00:14:26Good evening.
00:14:27It is truly an honor to be here celebrating a man who didn't just change comedy, he redefined
00:14:34what it could be.
00:14:36Eddie Murphy, come on, man.
00:14:37You're not just a legend, you're the blueprint, bro.
00:14:40For me personally, as someone who grew up dreaming about making people laugh, Eddie wasn't just
00:14:45an influence, he was proof.
00:14:48Proof, proof that you could come in young, take big swings, trust your voice, and leave
00:14:55a mark that lasts decades.
00:14:58This is Arsenio Hall right here.
00:15:04This whole night is crazy.
00:15:09But beyond the comedy, what I've always admired most is your range, sir.
00:15:15I mean, you could have stayed in one lane and been comfortable forever, but you didn't
00:15:19do that.
00:15:20You evolved.
00:15:22You challenged yourself.
00:15:24You even changed your laugh.
00:15:25I mean, who does that?
00:15:27But all jokes aside, Eddie Murphy, man, thank you.
00:15:33Thank you for the laughs.
00:15:35Thank you for showing generations of performers what's possible when talent meets fearlessness.
00:15:44We celebrate you tonight, but truthfully, we've been celebrating you for a long time, man.
00:15:50Cheers.
00:15:51Cheers.
00:15:54All right, let me do a little fun ready here.
00:15:56He's doing a movie this summer with Nick Nolte, so we're going to miss him.
00:15:59Don't have to say everything.
00:16:00Hey!
00:16:01All right!
00:16:01Movies just kind of happen.
00:16:03As a kid, I never thought I'd be in the movies.
00:16:23It's my first movie, but I go in and improvise.
00:16:26And Walter Hill used to tell me, uh, this isn't a comedy, Eddie.
00:16:30Because I'd be, how about if I did that?
00:16:31He'd say, this isn't a comedy.
00:16:32What the hell kind of cop are you?
00:16:35You know what I am?
00:16:36I'm your worst fucking nightmare, man.
00:16:38I'm a nigga with a badge.
00:16:39That means I got permission to kick your fucking ass whenever I feel like it.
00:16:42That bar scene was the only time I ever had an acting coach, because I had never done
00:16:47anything like that.
00:16:48As I said, I like to improvise.
00:16:49So I would improvise stuff, and I'd grab somebody, and they would pull their arms off.
00:16:54And the director would be like, cut!
00:16:55And the guy said, like, I wouldn't let him do that.
00:16:57And he's like, it's a fucking movie, dude.
00:16:59Like, there was real tension in that room.
00:17:01There's a new sheriff in town.
00:17:08And his name is Reggie Hammond.
00:17:11Y'all be cool.
00:17:12Right on.
00:17:13Nobody thought, like, this is going to be, like, this amazing, classic scene.
00:17:17We did it.
00:17:18We were just glad to get through it.
00:17:31I can see.
00:17:32I can see.
00:17:34I have legs.
00:17:34I have legs.
00:17:37I would like to press full charges.
00:17:40People like this are a menace to decent society.
00:17:41I'll bet that that man could run our company as well as your young wood fellow.
00:17:51Someone told you to do this to me.
00:17:53Yeah, he paid me a hundred bucks, too.
00:17:55It was good, Dukes.
00:17:56It was good, Dukes.
00:17:58You're a dead man, Valentine.
00:18:01What's that?
00:18:01Now, what are our commodities?
00:18:04Commodities are agricultural products, like coffee that you had for breakfast, wheat,
00:18:10which is used to make bread, pork bellies, which is used to make bacon, which you might
00:18:16find in a bacon and lettuce and tomato sandwich.
00:18:20Whenever I've done that in movies, it wasn't my idea when I did a camera take.
00:18:25That's John Lannis' idea.
00:18:27But I tell you what's interesting about that.
00:18:30You make a connection with audiences when you look at them, because nobody looks at them.
00:18:35You go see, no one looks, you know.
00:18:38Hey.
00:18:39When Charlie Chaplin comes on the scene, he's the first one to do it, and it made him have
00:18:45this connection with audiences off the top.
00:18:48Chaplin is the greatest, because Chaplin was able to do it with no sound.
00:18:53Hey, how'd you make out today?
00:18:55How could you do this to us after everything we've done for you?
00:18:59Oh, see, I made Lewis a bet here.
00:19:02Lewis bet me that we couldn't both get rich and put you all in the Paul House at the same
00:19:06time.
00:19:06He didn't think we could do it.
00:19:07I won.
00:19:09I lost.
00:19:13One dollar.
00:19:14Thank you, Lewis.
00:19:16After you.
00:19:17Certainly.
00:19:23Please welcome the daughter of Dan Aykroyd, Belle Aykroyd.
00:19:33My father wanted to be here, planned to be here, wrote these remarks, and then life got
00:19:41in the way.
00:19:42So, from him to you, good evening, sir.
00:19:50We made a big, hit, classic movie together, man.
00:19:55A critical and financial success.
00:20:02Trading Places is now in the pantheon of Christmas movies, for baby Jesus' sake.
00:20:08It was a solid script with a great director, John Landis, plus talented and well-liked actors.
00:20:17But, Eddie, it was your power, brilliance, talent, skills, and vibrant charisma that propelled the
00:20:30movie into the realm of the greats.
00:20:35Looking good, Billy Ray.
00:20:39Good night, Hollywood.
00:20:45I like Elvis Presley.
00:20:48Really, I give credit where credit is due.
00:20:50When Elvis was young, he was a bad motherfucker, boy.
00:20:53Elvis was bad.
00:20:55He was vicious.
00:20:57Sing his ass off.
00:20:58He sang so good, they let him do movies, he couldn't act.
00:21:01They said, fuck it, let him sing all his dialogue.
00:21:04They did.
00:21:05Everything Elvis said, they said, Elvis, we gotta win this race.
00:21:07We gotta win this race.
00:21:09I was a really big Elvis fan and still trying to do stuff like Elvis.
00:21:14Those leather suits and all that.
00:21:15Tour buses and chicks screaming and all.
00:21:18It was just, you would never have thought it was a comedy show.
00:21:21I was, I was all, I really leaned into it.
00:21:27Something about singers that people just love and shit.
00:21:29Because I remember, I did Stevie Wonder on a show once.
00:21:37And black people lost their motherfucking minds.
00:21:40I had brothers rolling up on me going,
00:21:42Hey, you the motherfucking I be doing Stevie Wonder?
00:21:45That shit ain't funny, motherfucker.
00:21:50Don't you never let me see you do that shit again.
00:21:52I'll fuck you up.
00:21:54Stevie Wonder is a musical genius.
00:22:21I love you, too.
00:22:24I love you, too.
00:22:34A sense of humor allows us to appreciate that a smile can be the most basic connection
00:22:45to our human humanity.
00:22:49Whether it is that infectious smile, his crazy laugh.
00:22:59Just his super silliness.
00:23:03Eddie and I found each other because he would imitate me on Saturday Night Live.
00:23:11He made fun of a blind man.
00:23:27And he made me and the world laugh.
00:23:31And it started a lifetime friendship.
00:23:35I love you for life.
00:23:37And I'll love you until the rainbow burns,
00:23:40the stars out in the sky,
00:23:41till the ocean covers every mountain high,
00:23:43I'll love you ever and forever and always.
00:23:47God bless you, Eddie.
00:23:57Please welcome Robert Townsend.
00:24:09It was 1987.
00:24:13Kenan Ivory Wayans and myself were working on our first movie, Hollywood Shuffle.
00:24:20Eddie Murphy was the biggest star in the world.
00:24:22And every casting director wanted an Eddie Murphy type.
00:24:26Can you walk like Eddie?
00:24:27Can you talk like Eddie?
00:24:28How do you look in a leather suit?
00:24:31Are you serious?
00:24:32Are you serious?
00:24:33So I went out and bought a leather suit.
00:24:37I say to Kenan,
00:24:38we should put this in the movie, man.
00:24:39We should put this in the movie.
00:24:40Kenan's like, man, Rob, Eddie knows us, man.
00:24:42We can't put that in the movie.
00:24:43I mean, man, Eddie makes fun of everybody, man.
00:24:45Let's put it in the movie.
00:24:46I put it in the movie.
00:24:48The film becomes a hit.
00:24:49Eddie calls and says, hey, man, everybody's talking about Hollywood Shuffle.
00:24:52When can I see Hollywood Shuffle?
00:24:53I'm like, oh, God.
00:24:55Oh, God.
00:24:56So we have a screening for Eddie.
00:24:58Eddie shows up with an entourage of 15.
00:25:02They're loving the movie.
00:25:03They're laughing.
00:25:04They're laughing.
00:25:05And then it gets to the scene about him.
00:25:07The casting director says,
00:25:08what we're looking for is an Eddie Murphy type.
00:25:11And the whole room is dead.
00:25:13Kenan's head goes down,
00:25:14and I'm like, oh, shit.
00:25:15Oh, shit.
00:25:16Oh, shit.
00:25:17Then I hear somebody in Eddie's entourage go,
00:25:19Eddie, they just said your name, Eddie.
00:25:21What is this bullshit, Eddie?
00:25:22What is this bullshit?
00:25:26And I'm like, oh, God.
00:25:28Oh, God.
00:25:29Oh, God.
00:25:30The room is dead.
00:25:32And then all of a sudden,
00:25:33Eddie starts to laugh.
00:25:35Rob, Kenan, why y'all?
00:25:36Why y'all do me like that?
00:25:37Why y'all do me like that?
00:25:40And then everything was cool.
00:25:42After the screening,
00:25:43Eddie's sitting in the room by himself,
00:25:45in the screening room,
00:25:46and I go over to apologize.
00:25:47I go, hey, man,
00:25:48if you were offended by that scene in the film,
00:25:51Kenan wrote it.
00:25:55No, no, no.
00:25:56I told the truth.
00:25:57No, he says, Rob, Rob, Rob.
00:25:58What you guys did is brilliant, man.
00:26:00It's brilliant.
00:26:02Look, uh,
00:26:03I'm getting ready to do this concert film,
00:26:05and I'm looking for a director.
00:26:07You want to direct it?
00:26:10Yeah.
00:26:12Then it's yours.
00:26:14And it's gonna be called Raw.
00:26:26I want to be Richard so bad,
00:26:28I used to go out on stage
00:26:29when I was 15
00:26:30and talk and act and walk
00:26:32and do everything like Richard Pryor.
00:26:33My mother would sit there
00:26:33and watch her little 15-year-old son
00:26:35on stage saying some outlandish shit.
00:26:37My whole act back then
00:26:38was about taking a shit,
00:26:39because that's all I had done at 15.
00:26:41That was my life experience,
00:26:43but it sounded like Richard Pryor jokes.
00:26:44I'd be going,
00:26:45you ever, like, sometime, right,
00:26:46you get on that toilet,
00:26:47and when you shit,
00:26:48that water splash up on your ass?
00:26:51Don't that make you mad, right?
00:26:53You know what really make me mad
00:26:54is when shit come halfway out your ass,
00:26:56then go back up in that motherfucker.
00:27:00Right?
00:27:02Why does shit be teasing your ass, right?
00:27:04Just get the fuck out, right?
00:27:06You know what really bother me
00:27:07is when you be straining
00:27:08for a long time, right,
00:27:10and one little pebble shit come out.
00:27:13Right?
00:27:14Be some shit this big, right?
00:27:16Well, push your head up your asshole
00:27:17and say,
00:27:17that's all the shit I'm gonna get, motherfucker.
00:27:21You know what really make me mad
00:27:22when your ass don't cooperate with you
00:27:24and clench up and break the shit in half?
00:27:27And you be mad as a motherfucker, too,
00:27:29because you know you got to wipe your ass
00:27:31for, like, five hours and shit, right?
00:27:34Use 12 rolls of toilet paper
00:27:36on that motherfucker.
00:27:38You know what really make me mad, though,
00:27:40is afterwards, right?
00:27:41It's after you shit.
00:27:42You done all the shit
00:27:43you're gonna do for the whole day, right?
00:27:45You finish shitting,
00:27:46and you flush the toilet,
00:27:47and wait a second,
00:27:48and one chunk come back.
00:27:52What does that chunk want?
00:27:56Please welcome Bill Burr.
00:28:04All right, how are you?
00:28:06How's it going?
00:28:07I am the reverse diversity hire
00:28:09for the evening.
00:28:14This right here is my entire
00:28:17comedy Smithsonian library.
00:28:19I've been watching them since day one.
00:28:21Eddie, when I first...
00:28:22I bought your first album.
00:28:24I didn't even know who you were.
00:28:26You had the rose behind your ear,
00:28:28and I had been listening to Richard Pryor,
00:28:30and I was just like,
00:28:31well, here's another black guy.
00:28:32He must be funny, too.
00:28:34So I bought it,
00:28:36and I became a fan.
00:28:40And a lot of people don't know this,
00:28:42but I actually saw Eddie on the Raw tour.
00:28:45I was only 18 years old,
00:28:47and I went to go see him.
00:28:49Like, the Weather Girls opened up.
00:28:50I remember that.
00:28:51And I went with my boss from the warehouse,
00:28:53and he did a bunch of blow,
00:28:55and he thought he was going to have a heart attack.
00:28:57And he's like,
00:28:58we got to get out of here.
00:28:59And I'm like,
00:28:59well, we're not missing Eddie,
00:29:01so you got to ride this shit out.
00:29:07So, like, fucking two weeks
00:29:09before I went to see Eddie,
00:29:10I saw Rodney Dangerfield,
00:29:12same place,
00:29:13and it was an all-white crowd,
00:29:15which didn't strike me as weird
00:29:17because I'm white as hell,
00:29:18and I just sat and I watched him.
00:29:20It was all good.
00:29:21And I remember when Eddie did his show,
00:29:24I immediately noticed
00:29:25that he was making everybody laugh.
00:29:27So, a few years later,
00:29:29I become a comedian,
00:29:29and I'm like,
00:29:30I'm going to be like Eddie.
00:29:31I'm going to go up in front of a black crowd.
00:29:36And I went up,
00:29:38and I did my thing,
00:29:39and I got off stage,
00:29:40and I was like,
00:29:41I am never going to do that again.
00:29:44Black people are mean.
00:29:46They don't let you get to the stage.
00:29:48They already heckle.
00:29:51They are going to have a good time
00:29:53with or without you.
00:29:55That is what I learned.
00:29:58But in that education
00:30:00that you gave me, Eddie,
00:30:01informed me as a comedian
00:30:02that I wanted to make everybody laugh.
00:30:03You've been such an amazing, amazing inspiration,
00:30:06and I'm looking forward
00:30:07to more of your work.
00:30:09I love you to death.
00:30:10Thank you so much,
00:30:10and it was an honor
00:30:11to work with you,
00:30:12the brother Charlie.
00:30:12Rest in peace.
00:30:13Good night.
00:30:17There was a really strong racial reaction
00:30:21to when I came on the scene,
00:30:23and different from Sidney Poitier.
00:30:26In the heat of the night,
00:30:27he's tolerated in the white world.
00:30:29In Beverly Hills Cop,
00:30:31I come to California,
00:30:32and I take charge.
00:30:34What's the problem?
00:30:34Are you security here?
00:30:35Yeah.
00:30:36Then you're the fucking problem.
00:30:37Go get your supervisor, please.
00:30:38Now!
00:30:39Get the fuck away from me, man.
00:30:44I have a pretty good idea
00:30:45that you had Mikey killed.
00:30:47And when I find out for sure,
00:30:49I'm gonna fuck you up real bad.
00:30:51That's why I blew up the way it did.
00:30:53That was the first time
00:30:54they'd ever seen anybody black
00:30:56go in the white world
00:30:57and take charge,
00:30:58not just be tolerated
00:31:00and be, you know,
00:31:01like, oh,
00:31:01you've got to be dignified.
00:31:03What's all the hostility, Phil?
00:31:05Get back, man.
00:31:06What you doing to all this guy, man?
00:31:07I want you to get back.
00:31:08You changed, man.
00:31:09I'm telling you to get back.
00:31:10If you don't get back,
00:31:11I'm gonna blow your fucking brains out.
00:31:16Please, move, and I'll kill you.
00:31:19Don't move!
00:31:21Turn over!
00:31:22Way to go, Rosewood.
00:31:24You're some kind of cop,
00:31:25you know that?
00:31:29Please welcome Judge Reinhold.
00:31:36The first time I saw Eddie
00:31:38was in a parking lot
00:31:40of a strip club
00:31:41in broad daylight
00:31:44on the first day
00:31:45of shooting Beverly Hills Cop.
00:31:48I'd just arrived
00:31:49in a nasty old Buick
00:31:52that looked like
00:31:53it had just made a re-entry
00:31:54from outer space.
00:31:56It wasn't burnt orange,
00:31:58it was just burnt,
00:31:59you know?
00:32:00And before I get out,
00:32:02I see this vision of a car,
00:32:05a white Rolls Corniche convertible
00:32:08with red leather
00:32:09and Eddie driving.
00:32:11My impulse was to duck
00:32:13because I didn't want him
00:32:15to see me in this car.
00:32:16I thought,
00:32:18it's not just the car,
00:32:21this guy's a classic
00:32:22at that age.
00:32:24I don't know.
00:32:25It was like he was
00:32:26from Hollywood
00:32:27from another time.
00:32:29And he walked
00:32:31in that strip club
00:32:33and we,
00:32:36with Marty Brest
00:32:38and Dan Petrie Jr.,
00:32:40defined the action comedy.
00:32:43Really did.
00:32:44My friend,
00:32:46we're here to celebrate
00:32:47your artistry,
00:32:49tremendous creativity,
00:32:51and also,
00:32:52from my point of view,
00:32:53the great care
00:32:54that you've taken
00:32:55of your gift
00:32:56because when most of us
00:32:58were stumbling around
00:32:59in the 80s,
00:33:00you walked the line
00:33:02and you took care
00:33:03of your gift
00:33:04for us to enjoy.
00:33:13Mark Twain said
00:33:15that laughter
00:33:16is the shortest distance
00:33:18between two people.
00:33:20Eddie,
00:33:21you brought us
00:33:22very close.
00:33:23That's why we're here.
00:33:24You're our chaplain
00:33:25and I love you.
00:33:31I'm 21 years old
00:33:32and I've never
00:33:34left in London.
00:33:35I have yet to experience
00:33:36what the outside world
00:33:37has to offer.
00:33:38Ah,
00:33:39so you want to
00:33:40sow your royal oats?
00:33:42No,
00:33:42it's not that.
00:33:43It's...
00:33:43You're right.
00:33:44Get out.
00:33:45See the world.
00:33:46Enjoy yourself.
00:33:47Fulfill every erotic desire
00:33:49and in 40 days,
00:33:51you will come back
00:33:52and marry your money.
00:33:53But, Father...
00:33:54It is settled.
00:33:55The whole idea
00:33:56started on a tour bus.
00:33:58I was just,
00:33:59you know,
00:33:59nursing a broken heart,
00:34:01talking about how hard
00:34:01it is to,
00:34:02you know,
00:34:04with all this famous stuff
00:34:06to meet a girl
00:34:07that just likes you
00:34:08for you.
00:34:09Anything I say,
00:34:09you do?
00:34:10Yes,
00:34:10your highness.
00:34:13Bark like a dog.
00:34:15Arf!
00:34:15Arf!
00:34:16Arf!
00:34:16Arf!
00:34:17I want a woman
00:34:18that's going to arouse
00:34:19my intellect
00:34:19as well as my loins.
00:34:21Where will you find
00:34:22such a woman?
00:34:23In America.
00:34:25Good morning,
00:34:25my neighbors!
00:34:27And fuck you!
00:34:28Yes!
00:34:29Yes!
00:34:30Fuck you too!
00:34:32I always liked the idea
00:34:35of turning myself
00:34:36into looking like
00:34:37somebody else.
00:34:38Peter Sellers did it
00:34:40in Dr. Strangelove,
00:34:42and that blew my mind.
00:34:44Men, yes!
00:34:46He can watch!
00:34:47And my favorite thing
00:34:49is to do it
00:34:50and the people
00:34:51don't know it's me.
00:34:52Excuse me.
00:34:53Hey, it's Kunta Kinte!
00:34:57A lot of people
00:34:58didn't know
00:34:59I was the old Jewish guy
00:35:00for years.
00:35:01If you didn't see
00:35:02the end credits,
00:35:03you just didn't know.
00:35:04Powerful power!
00:35:05Sugar Ray Robinson
00:35:06is the greatest fighter
00:35:06I ever lived.
00:35:07Oh, come on, man.
00:35:08What about Joe Louis?
00:35:09The bronze bomber!
00:35:10Now, that was
00:35:12a great boxer!
00:35:13You damn right!
00:35:14I suppose nobody in here
00:35:16ever heard of Cassius Clay.
00:35:18We got a point.
00:35:18Cassius Clay was
00:35:19a bad motherfucker.
00:35:20I knew Arsenio
00:35:21from the clubs.
00:35:22When he came on,
00:35:23it was like,
00:35:23you know,
00:35:23hey, this is what
00:35:24the gig is,
00:35:25and I just assumed.
00:35:26I didn't even ask him
00:35:27could you do
00:35:28other characters.
00:35:29It was like,
00:35:30you're gonna be the barber.
00:35:32You know,
00:35:32we just put the makeup
00:35:33on and did it.
00:35:34Hey, I ain't saying
00:35:35Clay ain't bad.
00:35:36I'm just saying
00:35:37I stopped liking
00:35:37Cassius Clay
00:35:38once he changed
00:35:39the name of Muhammad Ali.
00:35:40What kind of shit is that?
00:35:41Wait a second.
00:35:42Wait a second.
00:35:43A man has the right
00:35:44to change his name
00:35:46to whatever
00:35:47he wants to change it to.
00:35:48And if a man
00:35:49wants to be called
00:35:51Muhammad Ali,
00:35:52God damn it,
00:35:53this is a free country.
00:35:54You should respect
00:35:55his wishes
00:35:55and call the man
00:35:56Muhammad Ali.
00:35:58His mama name's Clay.
00:35:59I'm gonna call him Clay.
00:36:03Please welcome
00:36:04Arsenio Hall.
00:36:12Right from jump,
00:36:14Eddie knew he wanted
00:36:15John Landis
00:36:16to direct
00:36:17Coming to America.
00:36:18He had directed
00:36:19Eddie in the classic
00:36:21Trading Places.
00:36:23And John was also
00:36:25the perfect choice
00:36:26for me
00:36:27because I'd only done
00:36:29one other movie
00:36:30at that time.
00:36:33And Landis
00:36:34was the director.
00:36:35It was the classic
00:36:36Amazon women
00:36:38on the moon.
00:36:41My cousin,
00:36:42Aquanetta,
00:36:43in Cleveland,
00:36:44she said
00:36:44that it's
00:36:45in AFI's
00:36:4750 top films
00:36:48of all time.
00:36:50She was also
00:36:51eating edibles
00:36:53when she said that.
00:36:54But, uh...
00:36:55Now,
00:36:56for Amazon women
00:36:57on the moon,
00:36:58I think I had
00:36:5817 callbacks
00:37:00before I got the part.
00:37:02When your friend
00:37:03is Eddie Murphy,
00:37:04though,
00:37:04and he tells
00:37:05John Landis,
00:37:06Arsenio should have
00:37:07the role of Simi,
00:37:08you get the role
00:37:09of Simi.
00:37:10So I was thrilled.
00:37:11I'm getting to play
00:37:12the body man
00:37:14to a prince
00:37:14from Zamunda.
00:37:16I get to work
00:37:17with my friend
00:37:18and they're paying me.
00:37:21It can't get any better.
00:37:22But then,
00:37:22Eddie calls me
00:37:23and tells me,
00:37:24I want you to play
00:37:25the preacher character.
00:37:27I say cake
00:37:28because my dad
00:37:29was a Baptist preacher.
00:37:31And then,
00:37:31I find out,
00:37:32Eddie wants me
00:37:33to play
00:37:34the woman in red.
00:37:38The credits
00:37:39list her
00:37:40as extremely ugly girl.
00:37:46Then,
00:37:46Eddie tells me
00:37:47he also wants me
00:37:48to play
00:37:48Morris the barber.
00:37:51Now,
00:37:52the first time
00:37:52the great Rick Baker
00:37:53put us in the makeup,
00:37:55Rick suggested
00:37:56that we take
00:37:57a walk around
00:37:57the Paramount lot
00:37:59as the barber characters
00:38:01and talk to people.
00:38:03So we did.
00:38:06And no one knew
00:38:07it was us.
00:38:10Eddie has his barber character
00:38:11actually hit on
00:38:12this old lady
00:38:13while we were
00:38:14walking around
00:38:14the Paramount lot
00:38:15and he got her number.
00:38:20Yes.
00:38:20Yes.
00:38:21And she was
00:38:21an old white lady too.
00:38:23Yeah,
00:38:24she thought Clarence
00:38:25was this old,
00:38:26charming black guy
00:38:27and wanted to give him
00:38:29some.
00:38:29It was crazy.
00:38:33Eddie,
00:38:35I'm here today
00:38:36for you
00:38:37as a friend,
00:38:39but also I'm here
00:38:40as a fan.
00:38:41And if Reverend Brown
00:38:43from Coming to America
00:38:45were here right now,
00:38:48I think he would say,
00:38:51do you love him?
00:38:55Do you love Eddie Murray?
00:38:58Y'all don't hear me?
00:39:00Do you love Eddie Murray?
00:39:02Would you say
00:39:03Eddie Murray?
00:39:04Say Eddie Murray.
00:39:07We thank you
00:39:08for all
00:39:09that you've given us.
00:39:10Can I get an amen?
00:39:13And before I leave
00:39:14this stage
00:39:15and fly back
00:39:16to Jackson Heights,
00:39:18I need to say
00:39:19one more thing.
00:39:21If loving
00:39:22and thanking
00:39:24Eddie Murray
00:39:25is wrong,
00:39:28I don't want
00:39:29to be right.
00:39:31Why?
00:39:37Look,
00:39:38the game's over
00:39:39for tonight.
00:39:39I'm going to take
00:39:40this little boy home
00:39:41to his mother.
00:39:42My mama's dead.
00:39:44Well,
00:39:44your daddy.
00:39:45My father's dead too.
00:39:49Did you kill him?
00:39:50A bunch of
00:39:51new black directors
00:39:53coming on the scene
00:39:54and Robert Townsend
00:39:55and Spike Lee.
00:39:57So I was like,
00:39:57hey,
00:39:58let me direct the movie.
00:39:59You know,
00:39:59I might as well try.
00:40:00Fuck this.
00:40:01I like the movie,
00:40:02but when it came out
00:40:04and the critics saw it,
00:40:05they ripped it so bad.
00:40:06It was like
00:40:07I was hitting it
00:40:07out of the park
00:40:08and it becomes
00:40:09so popular
00:40:10and so,
00:40:11and it was like,
00:40:11oh,
00:40:11and now he's going to
00:40:12fucking direct too?
00:40:13Fuck that.
00:40:14So they hated it.
00:40:15Good Lord.
00:40:17You're a cool,
00:40:17sweet motherfucker,
00:40:18sugar.
00:40:19I love to see shit like that.
00:40:20You love to see anything,
00:40:21you blind motherfucker.
00:40:22Red Foxx is the funniest,
00:40:25naturally funny person
00:40:26I ever met.
00:40:27Almost like a curse.
00:40:29Literally,
00:40:30he died.
00:40:31He died on the set
00:40:32on a show I was producing.
00:40:33He had a heart attack
00:40:35and died
00:40:35and they thought
00:40:36he was joking.
00:40:37That's how funny he was.
00:40:38He was dying
00:40:39and motherfuckers
00:40:40was like this.
00:40:43And he had done that
00:40:44oh,
00:40:44this big one
00:40:45so many times.
00:40:46So when he had
00:40:46the big one,
00:40:47people were like,
00:40:48Red,
00:40:48you are too much.
00:40:49This motherfucker
00:40:49laying there dead
00:40:50and shit.
00:40:51People were like,
00:40:52Red,
00:40:53stop.
00:40:57Interesting.
00:40:59I've been stabbed
00:41:01and I've been hanged
00:41:03and I've been burned.
00:41:05Even broken on the rack once
00:41:07but I've never been shot before.
00:41:08The only thing
00:41:09I would have changed
00:41:10I would have changed
00:41:11my hair.
00:41:12That was the thing
00:41:13that was so off-putting
00:41:14to people.
00:41:15Black people,
00:41:16they just was not
00:41:17feeling,
00:41:17they was like,
00:41:18I showed up
00:41:18with that hair
00:41:19and black people
00:41:20was like,
00:41:20hell no,
00:41:21you see,
00:41:21that's too much.
00:41:22That's too much hair.
00:41:23You know Eddie
00:41:24ain't got no hair like that.
00:41:25Oh,
00:41:25you supposed to have
00:41:26long hair?
00:41:27I have missed
00:41:28the romance
00:41:28when I meet a woman
00:41:29and then once I hit it,
00:41:31I lose interest
00:41:31but that ain't my fault.
00:41:32Oh, so,
00:41:33in other words,
00:41:34right at that moment
00:41:34of orgasm,
00:41:35just all the romance
00:41:36just skeets right out of you.
00:41:38Boomerang is like
00:41:38a perfect movie.
00:41:40Insanely funny
00:41:41best friends.
00:41:42Next door neighbor funny
00:41:43Tisha Campbell.
00:41:44Hey!
00:41:45The things happening
00:41:46with the women at work.
00:41:48What out?
00:41:48You know,
00:41:49when Robin Gibbons
00:41:49was first breaking his heart.
00:41:51Let me get a good look.
00:41:52Check it.
00:41:53It's like Jet Magazine.
00:41:55To Halle Berry
00:41:57coming to the Halle Berry.
00:41:58It's a stacked movie.
00:42:01Forget about
00:42:01John Witherspoon
00:42:02destroying.
00:42:03Bang!
00:42:04Bang!
00:42:04Bang!
00:42:05Daddy, bang!
00:42:06So when Boomerang came out,
00:42:08you know,
00:42:08people was talking shit
00:42:09because the cast
00:42:10was all black.
00:42:11How come there were
00:42:12no white people
00:42:13in the movie?
00:42:13It was that kind of shit.
00:42:14That was the...
00:42:15Like, I've noticed
00:42:16that with a bunch of movies.
00:42:17Their silliness fades away
00:42:19and then it's just the work.
00:42:20And then, you know,
00:42:22the work holds up.
00:42:26Please welcome Eva Longoria.
00:42:32Hi, good evening.
00:42:33I don't know if you guys know this.
00:42:34Eddie and I were married
00:42:37in a movie.
00:42:40And Eddie, if you asked me,
00:42:42I'd say I do all over again.
00:42:44Yes, you have made us laugh
00:42:47and the world loves you for it.
00:42:48But AFI is honoring you tonight
00:42:51because you're a powerful force
00:42:54in driving culture forward.
00:42:56And while the world was laughing,
00:42:59it was learning.
00:43:00Case in point, Boomerang.
00:43:02Not since Cabin in the Sky,
00:43:05a film made in 1943
00:43:06starring Ethel Waters,
00:43:09Louis Armstrong,
00:43:10and Lena Horne,
00:43:11had a film featured
00:43:12an all-black cast.
00:43:19I mean, there were
00:43:20a couple of white people
00:43:21in Boomerang.
00:43:22There was like a French guy
00:43:23or something.
00:43:24But nobody remembers him.
00:43:26It was a film that illustrated
00:43:29to see it is to be it.
00:43:32Proof.
00:43:32Eddie played a hotshot
00:43:34ad executive
00:43:35named Marcus Graham.
00:43:37And inspired by the film,
00:43:39there was now a non-profit
00:43:41called the Marcus Graham Project,
00:43:43which empowers young,
00:43:45multicultural people
00:43:46to be leaders
00:43:47in media and marketing.
00:43:49That's impact.
00:43:53Thank you for blazing trails,
00:43:55for opening doors
00:43:56for so many artists, Eddie,
00:43:58for making the world
00:43:59a more colorful place
00:44:01and for always making us laugh,
00:44:04especially when you're
00:44:05moving culture forward.
00:44:09Please welcome Chris Rock.
00:44:12Hey.
00:44:14Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:44:17Well, we're all here, Eddie.
00:44:19All your children.
00:44:21You got 20 kids,
00:44:23but you also have
00:44:24your comedian children,
00:44:26Tracy Morgan,
00:44:27Martin Lawrence,
00:44:28Kevin Hart,
00:44:29Dave Chappelle.
00:44:31We are...
00:44:31There is no us
00:44:33without you.
00:44:34Okay?
00:44:37What...
00:44:38People don't give
00:44:39Eddie Murphy enough credit
00:44:41for revolutionizing acting.
00:44:43Do you realize...
00:44:44Do you realize how
00:44:45black people used to act
00:44:46before Eddie Murphy?
00:44:49It was like...
00:44:50Do you understand,
00:44:52like, in a movie,
00:44:53it was very,
00:44:54I'm Mr. Tibbs,
00:44:57or...
00:44:57So it was like
00:44:58a lot of overacting,
00:45:00or it was J.J.
00:45:01That oh my!
00:45:03But Eddie...
00:45:08But like Brando,
00:45:10you're the first
00:45:10black man to just be cool.
00:45:12To just be yourself.
00:45:14It was just you.
00:45:16My favorite
00:45:17Eddie Murphy story,
00:45:18we're at a club,
00:45:19and this white woman
00:45:21walks up to Eddie
00:45:22and goes,
00:45:23oh my God,
00:45:23I've never kissed
00:45:25a black man before.
00:45:26I've never kissed
00:45:27a black man before.
00:45:28And it's Eddie
00:45:29in a big-ass entourage,
00:45:31like real Eddie,
00:45:32and he's got his leather on,
00:45:34and Prince is there,
00:45:35and Rick is there.
00:45:37And the woman goes,
00:45:38I've never kissed
00:45:39a black man before.
00:45:40Can I kiss you?
00:45:42And Eddie's got
00:45:43all his bodyguards there.
00:45:45And Eddie looks at her
00:45:46and goes,
00:45:46hey, hey, hey, hey,
00:45:47you can't start at the top.
00:45:55You got to kiss
00:45:57one of these
00:45:57broke niggas first.
00:46:00Hey, man,
00:46:02I love you
00:46:03more than
00:46:04you will ever know,
00:46:06okay?
00:46:07Ladies and gentlemen,
00:46:08give it up for
00:46:09Eddie Murphy.
00:46:17Excuse me,
00:46:18I'm going to move this.
00:46:18Oh, boy,
00:46:19I'm going to move this.
00:46:20Sorry about that, man.
00:46:21Let me pick that up for you.
00:46:24It's a full moon tonight.
00:46:28I think I found
00:46:29where they hit
00:46:30Jimmy Hoffa.
00:46:32I'm literally watching
00:46:33Geraldo Rivera,
00:46:35and it was a commercial
00:46:36that came on,
00:46:37and it was like
00:46:38a fat person
00:46:39that broke away,
00:46:40and then it was
00:46:41a smaller person,
00:46:41and then they broke
00:46:42right all the way
00:46:43to a thin person.
00:46:44And I was like,
00:46:45hey,
00:46:45and that's where
00:46:46I got the idea
00:46:46for the movie.
00:46:55Jerry Lewis,
00:46:55the original one,
00:46:56you know,
00:46:57he's a wimp,
00:46:57a geek,
00:46:58and he turns
00:46:59into this cool guy.
00:47:00When we made
00:47:00the problem physical,
00:47:02when it was like
00:47:03he has this
00:47:03physical problem,
00:47:04it just changed
00:47:05everything.
00:47:06Hey, hey, hey, hey,
00:47:07what's wrong with you?
00:47:07You're supposed to eat
00:47:08that thing,
00:47:08not scalp it.
00:47:09Well, Daddy,
00:47:09all the calories
00:47:10in the chicken
00:47:10are found in the skin
00:47:11and in the fat,
00:47:12so I peel it off.
00:47:12They're talking about
00:47:13that's where all
00:47:13the fats and calories is.
00:47:14You know where
00:47:15that comes from?
00:47:16Watching that damn TV.
00:47:17Every time you turn it on,
00:47:18they got somebody
00:47:19in there talking
00:47:19about lose weight,
00:47:20get healthy,
00:47:21get in shape.
00:47:22Got everybody
00:47:22looking all anorexia,
00:47:23talking about that's healthy.
00:47:24I know what healthy is.
00:47:25Nutty Professor
00:47:26is my favorite performance
00:47:28of a comedian
00:47:29in a movie.
00:47:30Oh, this is so fabulous.
00:47:32Ain't nothing like
00:47:32getting together
00:47:33with family
00:47:33and having a good meal.
00:47:34A lot of comedians
00:47:35are good listeners.
00:47:37You're paying attention
00:47:38to the world
00:47:39making sense
00:47:40to everybody else
00:47:40except you,
00:47:41so you kind of
00:47:42got to piece together
00:47:44everyone's voice
00:47:44and what everyone's doing
00:47:46and how they sort of play.
00:47:48Who that called my name?
00:47:50Yeah, I called you
00:47:51if your name is...
00:47:52Whatever character I'm doing,
00:47:54let's say I'm doing
00:47:54the father,
00:47:55and all the other characters
00:47:57are a tennis ball.
00:47:58See what you made me do?
00:48:00God damn it,
00:48:00I messed up my name.
00:48:02Okay, now the next day
00:48:04I'll do the mother
00:48:05and I'll have in my ear
00:48:07what I did the day before.
00:48:09So I'm doing the mother
00:48:11and I remember
00:48:12when I'm talking
00:48:12so I can go talk
00:48:13when I'm talking
00:48:14to a tennis ball,
00:48:15I remember what I did yesterday.
00:48:16Then the next day
00:48:17I'm doing the brother
00:48:18and then I'll have
00:48:19the mother and the father
00:48:20in my ear
00:48:21and then I have all of that
00:48:22and I'm doing it.
00:48:23Probably looks crazy.
00:48:25When I was young,
00:48:26I used to always have relations.
00:48:27Every night,
00:48:28if a nice gentleman
00:48:29bring me flowers
00:48:31and candy
00:48:31and take me in a movie,
00:48:33show me a lovely evening,
00:48:35then I would take him home
00:48:37and give him
00:48:38hot, lovely relations.
00:48:40A relationship
00:48:40is a beautiful thing.
00:48:41It's nothing to be ashamed of,
00:48:43especially to young people.
00:48:45I think it's...
00:48:46That's your whole head, man.
00:48:47You know,
00:48:48sometimes when I'm alone,
00:48:49I relate to myself.
00:48:50I can relate.
00:48:52No more.
00:48:57Please welcome Dave Chappelle.
00:49:07All right.
00:49:10A little cultural inside baseball.
00:49:14I know this is true for me.
00:49:16I think this is true
00:49:16for many black people.
00:49:17Black people
00:49:18often have fear
00:49:20for their heroes.
00:49:22We worry about them
00:49:23because so many of our heroes
00:49:25are persecuted
00:49:26or shot down.
00:49:29When I was 14 years old,
00:49:32Raw came out
00:49:33and I would go
00:49:35and I would watch it
00:49:36every day after school
00:49:38like I was taking a class,
00:49:41like I knew somehow
00:49:42this was something
00:49:44really important in my life.
00:49:46Throughout my life,
00:49:48Eddie, man,
00:49:49I kept my eye on you.
00:49:51You were the ball
00:49:52I was watching.
00:49:53You were the hero
00:49:54that I worried about.
00:49:56Man, when you came up,
00:49:59it looked lonely.
00:50:00You was just by yourself.
00:50:01It was you,
00:50:02it was Michael Jackson,
00:50:03it was Rick James,
00:50:05and it was Prince,
00:50:06all of whom,
00:50:08all of whom are deceased
00:50:09and somehow,
00:50:12somehow you survived.
00:50:14Tonight.
00:50:15When I came into the theater
00:50:17to do this thing,
00:50:19man, I saw a bunch
00:50:20of my heroes.
00:50:21I saw Martin
00:50:21and Arsenio
00:50:23and Robert Towns
00:50:24and all these people
00:50:25in For My Life.
00:50:25I saw you, Chris,
00:50:26and I'm like,
00:50:27man, this is fucking crazy.
00:50:30All to honor
00:50:32the sole survivor of the 80s
00:50:42Eddie Murphy.
00:50:47When we did
00:50:47Nutty Professor,
00:50:48you know,
00:50:49and I got the role,
00:50:51I was terrified.
00:50:52To me,
00:50:53I was Spike Lee
00:50:54to us another hero
00:50:54I saw tonight.
00:50:56But I was terrified
00:50:57to meet you.
00:50:58And when I met you,
00:50:59I didn't even know
00:51:00it was you
00:51:00because you were
00:51:01dressed as Sherman.
00:51:02I was like,
00:51:02who is this fat nigga?
00:51:03I'm nervous
00:51:03and this big fat nigga
00:51:04is over here.
00:51:08And then we did the scene.
00:51:11Man,
00:51:11I was in the pocket.
00:51:13What do I got to do?
00:51:13They said,
00:51:14all you got to do
00:51:14is just one fat joke
00:51:15after another.
00:51:16I said,
00:51:16I got this.
00:51:17And man,
00:51:18I just started
00:51:18lighting Eddie's ass up.
00:51:20And he was dressed as Sherman
00:51:21when I met him.
00:51:22And then they started
00:51:23doing that slow push.
00:51:25And man,
00:51:25when you put that face on,
00:51:27he was like,
00:51:27I said,
00:51:28oh, no.
00:51:29I said,
00:51:30America's gonna hate me
00:51:31for this.
00:51:32But the job
00:51:33was the job.
00:51:33I kept going.
00:51:38And then I worked
00:51:39up the nerve
00:51:40to improvise
00:51:41and I looked
00:51:41at Jada Pinkett
00:51:42and I said,
00:51:42who is sucking
00:51:43whose titties over here?
00:51:45And water
00:51:46shot out of Eddie's nose.
00:51:50I made my hero laugh
00:51:54and that made me
00:51:56want to cry.
00:51:58I got to tell you, man,
00:52:01recently I did an interview
00:52:03that made headlines
00:52:04because I said
00:52:05I was considering
00:52:06doing Chappelle's show again.
00:52:08And I told the guy,
00:52:09I said,
00:52:09if you would have asked me
00:52:10that a year ago,
00:52:10I'd have said no.
00:52:12Chappelle's show
00:52:13was a very difficult
00:52:14show to do
00:52:15but it was one
00:52:16of the greatest
00:52:16experiences of my life
00:52:17and one of the reasons
00:52:18that it was great
00:52:19was your brother,
00:52:20Charlie.
00:52:26And I know Bill
00:52:27mentioned it
00:52:28but Charlie used
00:52:29to tell us stories
00:52:30all day
00:52:31about your ascension
00:52:32to fame
00:52:33and I just want you
00:52:34to know, man,
00:52:35every time he mentioned you
00:52:36he always said
00:52:38how proud he was of you.
00:52:40Man, he said,
00:52:41I love my brother.
00:52:42You know.
00:52:43And Charlie meant
00:52:45the world
00:52:47to everybody on the set.
00:52:49One day,
00:52:50Charlie gave me
00:52:50the script to Norbert
00:52:52and said,
00:52:53man, I'm gonna give
00:52:54the script to my brother
00:52:55and man,
00:52:55you should do this movie
00:52:56and then two days later
00:52:59came back and said,
00:53:00never mind,
00:53:00he's doing both parts.
00:53:01I said,
00:53:02God dang.
00:53:11A couple weeks ago
00:53:12on a whim,
00:53:13I reached out to Eddie
00:53:15and asked him
00:53:15if I could come by
00:53:16and visit him
00:53:17and I went to his house.
00:53:18I didn't know
00:53:19it was the day
00:53:19after his 65th birthday.
00:53:22Weather was beautiful.
00:53:24His grandkids
00:53:25were outside
00:53:26playing in the pool
00:53:27screaming and laughing
00:53:29like, you know,
00:53:30children,
00:53:30just pure joy
00:53:33and me and Eddie
00:53:34for the first time
00:53:35talked about Charlie
00:53:37since he passed.
00:53:38I hadn't seen him
00:53:38or really had an occasion
00:53:40to speak about it.
00:53:41and in the midst
00:53:42of the conversation,
00:53:43Eddie,
00:53:44Eddie was the one
00:53:45that said,
00:53:46man,
00:53:46you should do like
00:53:47a Chappelle show movie
00:53:48or something like that.
00:53:49And I said,
00:53:51and I said,
00:53:52man,
00:53:52that would be tough
00:53:52without your brother.
00:53:55So, Eddie,
00:53:56if I do it,
00:53:59man,
00:53:59do the Charlie parts
00:54:00and let's fucking go.
00:54:03thank you for everything.
00:54:07Tonight
00:54:09is not just
00:54:10an achievement
00:54:12of a professional career
00:54:14going incredibly right.
00:54:16Tonight,
00:54:17it's a lifetime achievement.
00:54:19Those grandkids playing,
00:54:21the fact that you still
00:54:22look young and beautiful,
00:54:23that beautiful family
00:54:25you're sitting with,
00:54:26man,
00:54:27you are still
00:54:27the hero
00:54:29I want to be.
00:54:30Thank you, sir.
00:54:37Who are you?
00:54:39Who am I?
00:54:40Who am I?
00:54:42I am the guardian
00:54:43of lost souls.
00:54:45I am the powerful,
00:54:47the pleasurable,
00:54:48the indestructible mooshu.
00:54:51Oh, pretty high, man.
00:54:54Back in those days,
00:54:55you didn't get paid
00:54:56to do them.
00:54:57You would just
00:54:57be swell.
00:54:59You'd be swell
00:55:00to be in a Disney movie
00:55:01than Robin Williams
00:55:03did Aladdin.
00:55:04It was like,
00:55:05wow,
00:55:05this whole movie
00:55:06is this guy's vocal performance
00:55:08and it changed
00:55:09kind of like everything.
00:55:10Can I stay with you?
00:55:11What?
00:55:12Can I stay with you?
00:55:14Please.
00:55:15Of course.
00:55:17Really?
00:55:17No.
00:55:18Please.
00:55:19I don't want to go back there.
00:55:20You don't know what it's like
00:55:21to be considered a freak.
00:55:22Well,
00:55:23maybe you do.
00:55:24But that's why
00:55:24we got to stick together.
00:55:25You've got to let me stay.
00:55:27Please.
00:55:27Please.
00:55:27Okay.
00:55:29Okay.
00:55:30But one night only.
00:55:31Ah, thank you.
00:55:32Ah.
00:55:33What are you doing?
00:55:33No.
00:55:33This is going to be fun.
00:55:35We can stay up late
00:55:36swapping manless stories
00:55:37and in the morning,
00:55:38I'm making waffles.
00:55:45Please welcome Mike Myers.
00:56:03When the American Film Institute
00:56:06calls you
00:56:08to pay tribute
00:56:09to Eddie Murphy,
00:56:11the answer is,
00:56:12of course,
00:56:13yes.
00:56:15And when they tell you
00:56:17that you have to wear
00:56:18the Shrek makeup,
00:56:21evidently,
00:56:21the answer is also yes.
00:56:25They also wanted me
00:56:26to mention
00:56:27the following facts
00:56:28about the Shrek movies.
00:56:31I didn't think
00:56:32it was particularly tasteful,
00:56:34but they asked me
00:56:35to do this.
00:56:35Ah,
00:56:36Shrek won
00:56:37the first Academy Award
00:56:38for an animated feature.
00:56:40That's pretty good.
00:56:43Shrek is one of the
00:56:45top 20 film franchises
00:56:47of all time.
00:56:48You know.
00:56:49Here's another one.
00:56:51I'm sorry.
00:56:51They wanted me to do this.
00:56:52Shrek 2
00:56:53was the highest grossing film
00:56:55of 2004.
00:56:57Okay, guys.
00:56:58I didn't want to mention it,
00:56:59but it beat out
00:57:00Harry Potter
00:57:01and Spider-Man.
00:57:02You know.
00:57:03That's a bit braggy.
00:57:04I'm sorry.
00:57:06Oh, I guess
00:57:07it says here
00:57:08that not only
00:57:10is Shrek
00:57:11DreamWorks'
00:57:12highest grossing
00:57:13animated film,
00:57:14Jeffrey Katzenberg
00:57:16has been quoted
00:57:16as saying
00:57:17that Shrek
00:57:18saved DreamWorks.
00:57:20Jeffrey,
00:57:21you're welcome.
00:57:28But none
00:57:29of Shrek's success
00:57:31could have happened
00:57:32without Eddie Murphy.
00:57:36Eddie's character
00:57:37Donkey
00:57:38is a masterpiece
00:57:39as is every character
00:57:41that Eddie
00:57:42has created
00:57:42over the years.
00:57:43Lovable,
00:57:44hilarious,
00:57:45joyous,
00:57:46vulnerable,
00:57:47and loyal.
00:57:48Eddie combines
00:57:49all of those
00:57:50in a tour de force.
00:57:51And plainly put,
00:57:53Eddie
00:57:53is one of the greatest.
00:57:56Now, obviously,
00:57:57I never got to work
00:57:58with Charlie Chaplin.
00:58:00I never got to work
00:58:00with Alec Guinness.
00:58:01I never got to work
00:58:02with Peter Sellers,
00:58:03but it is my absolute
00:58:05honor to say
00:58:06and to be able
00:58:07to tell my kids
00:58:08that I got to work
00:58:08with Eddie Murphy.
00:58:10Eddie,
00:58:12congratulations.

00:59:39Cleavon Derricks,
00:59:40he played James Thunder early.

01:05:28Alright y'all give it up
01:05:42Give me the experience of motion pictures oh yeah quite a bit actually quite a bit experience I'm
01:05:48an active renter at Blockbuster and I attend the film to cinema as much as possible weekly bi-weekly
01:06:00interweek intermediately would you be willing to cut your hair yes but it's usually better if someone
01:06:10else does it I had heard stories of people making films financed on their credit card and I always
01:06:17thought that was very interesting and we have a scene which I think is one of the funniest scenes
01:06:22I've ever come up with which is Eddie Murphy running across the freeway as part of the film and we
01:06:28convince him no it's fine
01:07:09that's Steve Martin I'm just blessed and lucky to be in that movie dolomite is my name and fucking up
01:07:16motherfuckers is my game his story is bananas a guy who wanted to be this big star but he's just
01:07:22got a
01:07:23little bit of talent he's got a big giant dream a little bit of talent tug on my shit tug

01:07:48back then
01:07:49when we were watching them as a kid we watched those Rudy Ray Moore movies we know that these movies
01:07:53are
01:07:53really crude and low budget we know all of that but there's so much stuff in it that's so fucking
01:07:58funny

01:08:39I first met Eddie Murphy on the set of Dolomite is my man now the audition process and prep was
01:08:46rigorous but Eddie bet on me to be vouched by someone like the likes of Eddie is like being
01:08:53knighted by a king in this industry and my time with Eddie didn't stop when production ended now
01:09:02usually only the leads go on the press tour but Eddie did something very rare and special he made
01:09:08sure I was included in every step of it now everywhere we went we were greeted by sea of fans
01:09:15the magnitude of this man's star power was so great that quite honestly to be in that close proximity to
01:09:24that kind of energy overwhelmed me but Eddie never flinched I watched him navigate every fan
01:09:30encounter every interview every talk show with such a level of grace and humor and that I will never
01:09:37forget Eddie I truly hope that I get to learn from you for the rest of my career God bless

01:18:26Have they always been this size?
01:18:29Thank you, Spike.
01:18:31Thank you, bro.
01:18:33You know, Spike is from Brooklyn, too.
01:18:37But actually, you know, I'm going to tell Spike.
01:18:40Spike wasn't born in Brooklyn.
01:18:48But he's got Brooklyn in his heart.
01:19:00But yeah, I had, this morning when I woke up, I had so much anxiety.
01:19:03I was like, I didn't know what this was going to be like.
01:19:07I was like, wow.
01:19:08And it's nothing like, everything is wonderful.
01:19:13And it couldn't have been at a, coming at a better time.
01:19:20It's like this last month or two months has been like, just so much has been happening
01:19:26in my life, my, I just had my, my, uh, my first grandson.
01:19:30And I just had my, uh, my third granddaughter.
01:19:36And, uh, yeah, yeah.
01:19:38That just turned, I just turned 65.
01:19:42And it's like, it's just, I feel like it's raining blessings on me this month.
01:19:46And, uh, yeah, it's a lot of, a lot of stuff.
01:19:49And, uh, to get this award and still be, you know, look like myself.
01:19:57Because sometimes they let you wait until you're real old to get this award.
01:20:01Because Mel Brooks, he was 86 when he got it.
01:20:06And, uh, last year, Francis Ford Coppola, the great Francis Ford Coppola, was, was 86 as well.
01:20:13I'm 65.
01:20:18The oldest person that we get, I think, was Lillian Gish.
01:20:21She was 92, right?
01:20:23Yeah.
01:20:25And she was very gracious when she came out and got the award.
01:20:27She was, said, thank you.
01:20:28If y'all made me wait until I was 92, I came out, I would have came out here and
01:20:32said,
01:20:33Fuck everybody!
01:20:41Fuck everybody!
01:20:42Then I, then I would have shit on the floor.
01:20:48And they would, and they would start playing that music, that music, that when they want you to stop, I
01:20:54would have just kept shitting.
01:20:59But we staved off that happening by giving me this award tonight.
01:21:09Yeah, just looking out and seeing all my family, all my kids, and my beautiful wife, and seeing all my
01:21:17different people that I worked with.
01:21:20And it's just, uh, it's just really filled up.
01:21:24And, uh, and, uh, this is a special moment.
01:21:31And I, I, I want to thank, uh, uh, uh, AFI and Ted Sarandas, Randas, and Ted, for, uh, for,
01:21:43uh, putting this whole thing together.
01:21:44It's just, uh, I wish y'all could feel what I'm feeling and see what I'm seeing.
01:21:51It's just a really, uh, I've been moved by tonight.
01:22:00But, uh, yeah, I'd like to thank everybody for, for giving me this night that I will remember forever and
01:22:06ever and ever.
01:22:07I almost, I almost teared up.
01:22:10I almost, I'm going to get backstage and cry.
01:22:13But, uh, this has been wonderful, and thank you so much.
01:22:15I love it.
01:22:58Humor is like a spirit.
01:23:00It's a feeling that I'll, I'll get.
01:23:02And if I have that feeling, that little, tiny, little feeling way in the back, it's like a nanosecond before
01:23:08the joke comes out.
01:23:09You say it in your head or you do it in, in, in, in, you get that little feeling and
01:23:14it always works.
01:23:15You tap into this spirit, you conjure that spirit up and funny shit starts happening.
01:23:21It's awesome.
01:23:21Yeah.
01:23:49We'll talk to you guys.
