00:01:07Many years ago, when the Commodore built it,
00:01:10it had been one of the showplaces of New Bristol,
00:01:1311 Crescent Drive.
00:01:16That's how the house was still listed in the city directory.
00:01:19But it was a dead address.
00:01:22It had been barred, locked and shuttered for over 12 years.
00:01:26Thousands of days had dawned
00:01:28without a ray of sunshine striking through its windows.
00:01:32It stood among the neighbouring homes,
00:01:34dark and blind and almost forgotten.
00:01:38From a certain window in the house next door,
00:01:42the Crescent seemed deserted,
00:01:45yet not quite deserted.
00:01:48An old woman was crossing the street,
00:01:51bundled against the rain.
00:01:55In front of the empty house,
00:01:57suddenly she paused, surprised,
00:02:01and stared at something she saw.
00:02:05A light in a place where no light should have been.
00:02:08It moved behind the boarded windows.
00:02:10It reached the wall.
00:02:12It should have stopped there, but it didn't.
00:02:14It went on through into the house next door.
00:02:19And then she saw why.
00:02:22Below her,
00:02:23dimly through the rain-stained window,
00:02:26a man appeared.
00:02:27She saw him stoop and lift something heavy
00:02:30and set it in place.
00:02:34He must have heard her.
00:02:36For suddenly he turned.
00:02:38When the light hit her face,
00:02:39she stumbled and dropped something.
00:02:41A small gold watch.
00:02:43It was probably the only thing of value
00:02:46she had to her name.
00:02:48Frightened as she was,
00:02:49she stayed to look for it.
00:02:51Just a little too long.
00:02:53Above her,
00:02:55a door opened.
00:02:57The door of number 10,
00:02:59Crescent Drive.
00:03:01The door of number 10,
00:03:04The door of number 10,
00:03:15Crescent Drive.

00:03:50The door of number 10,
00:03:55The door of number 10,
00:04:10Taxi.
00:04:17Number 10, Crescent Drive.
00:04:39Number 10, Crescent Drive.
00:05:10Number 10, Crescent Drive.
00:05:11What do you want?
00:05:11She wants in. What do you think she wants?
00:05:14I'm your new governess.
00:05:14We've got a governess.
00:05:16Sure you gave me the right address, Miss?
00:05:19There it is. Fielding, Number 10, Crescent Drive.
00:05:22And they've got a governess.
00:05:25Yes?
00:05:26Oh, you should be Miss Howard. Come in.
00:05:36You'll find Mr. Fielding in the library.
00:05:38He's expecting you.
00:05:59Mr. Fielding?
00:06:00What is it?
00:06:01I'm Elizabeth Howard.
00:06:03Take a chair, Miss Howard.
00:06:16Shall I answer it?
00:06:17Why? It'll stop ringing after a while.
00:06:26See?
00:06:29Perhaps you don't remember.
00:06:30The agency in Boston sent me here as a governess.
00:06:35Uh-huh.
00:06:37Well, aren't you even going to look at me?
00:06:40Sure.
00:06:44You're too young to know anything about children.
00:06:47I'm sure I'm not. The agency said you were 25.
00:06:48I...
00:06:49You're not 25, are you?
00:06:50No, I...
00:06:51You're nothing like 25.
00:06:52Have you ever had a job as a governess before?
00:06:54No, but...
00:06:55Have you ever had any kind of a job?
00:06:57Yes, I have, but...
00:06:58Don't you ever finish a sentence?
00:06:59Yes, if I'm allowed to.
00:07:02Okay.
00:07:03Let's start all over.
00:07:04Sit down. Tell me about yourself.
00:07:11My home was in Sharon.
00:07:13I went to Boston a year ago and worked on a newspaper.
00:07:16Then I tried advertising for a while.
00:07:18You didn't like it?
00:07:19I was fired.
00:07:21I see.
00:07:22I was never really trained for anything.
00:07:24My father died suddenly while I was at college.
00:07:27And your mother?
00:07:28She died when I was a child.
00:07:31Well, Miss Howard, you're young and pretty and...
00:07:34You seem intelligent.
00:07:36What makes you want to be a governess?
00:07:38I'm fond of children, Mr. Fielding.
00:07:40You think that's enough?
00:07:41Yes, I do.
00:07:42You don't know my children.
00:07:44Well, I've seen them.
00:07:45Seeing them is one thing and making them behave is something else.
00:07:48I'd like to try if you'll let me.
00:07:50Well, let's go up and meet them.
00:07:55I did hope you'd be a little more motherly.
00:07:58I'll be 22 in March.
00:08:00Remind me to congratulate you.
00:08:05That's where they belong.
00:08:06Behind bars.
00:08:11After my wife died, they went to live with her grandmother.
00:08:14She didn't discipline them.
00:08:16She bribed them.
00:08:19That's my room and that's the nursery.
00:08:24And this is your room.
00:08:30Lily?
00:08:32Lily!
00:08:34Were you wanting me, Mr. Fielding?
00:08:36Is there anyone else in this house called Lily?
00:08:37Why hasn't this room been done?
00:08:40Hasn't it?
00:08:41When?
00:08:42Last year?
00:08:42Well, I'll go and get the sweep.
00:08:49Do you know how to run a house, Miss Howard?
00:08:51Yes, of course.
00:08:52I wish you'd run this one.
00:08:55Cheerful view, isn't it?
00:08:56Cheerful.
00:08:57That's the Tiger's place.
00:08:59It's been boarded up for 12 years.
00:09:01Around here, we call it the Commodore's Folly.
00:09:04I used to work for the old devil once.
00:09:07This is Ellen's room.
00:09:12Come on in here, you two.
00:09:14And say, how do you do to Miss Howard?
00:09:18This is my little girl.
00:09:20Hello, Ellen.
00:09:21Hello.
00:09:22Bonnie?
00:09:23This is Dumbo.
00:09:25Hello, Dumbo.
00:09:27Bonnie!
00:09:29Bonnie's a very disobedient boy.
00:09:31Really?
00:09:32Mm-hmm.
00:09:36What are you doing, son?
00:09:37Playing hard to get?
00:09:39Come on, let's go out and be friends.
00:09:41Don't want to.
00:09:42Come on, she's all right.
00:09:44Let's give her a chance.
00:09:46This is Teddy.
00:09:47And this is Virginia May.
00:09:49And this is Barney.
00:09:50How do you do, Barney?
00:09:51Well, I'll leave you to get acquainted.
00:09:53I'll be downstairs if you need me.
00:09:57Maxine was prettier.
00:09:58Maxine was mean.
00:10:00She wouldn't do my curls.
00:10:02And who was Maxine?
00:10:04Maxine's our governor.
00:10:05She's coming back.
00:10:05She told me so.
00:10:07I'm glad you're going to live with us, Miss Howard.
00:10:10I like you.
00:10:12Well, I hope you're both going to like me.
00:10:19Would you like to see my scrapbook, Miss Howard?
00:10:22I'd like to very much.
00:10:26Barney's always playing that old record.
00:10:29Maxine gave it to him.
00:10:34Look, that's Donald Duck.
00:10:36And that's Dopey.
00:10:38And that's Grumpy, the cross one.
00:10:44Snow White.
00:10:45Isn't she pretty?
00:10:46She's lovely.
00:10:48He was in love with her.
00:10:50He was?
00:10:50Mm-hmm.
00:10:53And what's this, Ellen?
00:10:55Salem Alley.
00:10:56That's Alberta.
00:10:57Alberta?
00:10:58That's her there.
00:10:59She's dead.
00:11:00The man from the empty house isn't in the picture.
00:11:03What man?
00:11:04The man from the empty house, he lives next door, in there.
00:11:08And he just goes out at night.
00:11:11Nobody lives in there, Ellen.
00:11:12Oh, yes, he does.
00:11:14Truly, he does.
00:11:15He comes into our house, too.
00:11:18Barney's seen him.
00:11:19And he hasn't got a face.
00:11:21Well, that's silly, Ellen.
00:11:22Barney was just telling you a story to frighten you.
00:11:24I never did.
00:11:25Oh, what a fib.
00:11:27He did so, Miss Howard.
00:11:28Did not.
00:11:29You did so.
00:11:30You know what he told me?
00:11:31You shut up.
00:11:32You just talk and talk.
00:11:37Ellen, if you'll get your curlers ready, I'll put your hair up.
00:11:41Oh, will you?
00:11:41Will you really, Miss Howard?
00:11:43I found out that this will never do.
00:11:47When you grow old, you don't last long.
00:11:51You're here today, and then tomorrow you're gone.
00:11:57Do you mind if we turn this off for a minute?
00:12:00Let it alone.
00:12:03What's the matter, Barney?
00:12:06Won't you tell me?
00:12:07I want Maxine to come back.
00:12:09I love her.
00:12:10That's all right.
00:12:11There's no reason why you shouldn't love Maxine.
00:12:14But can't we be friends, too?
00:12:16Why didn't you come here?
00:12:17We don't want you here.
00:12:29You're my enemy.
00:12:30I hate you.
00:12:37We don't want you here.
00:12:39There'll be some changes made today.
00:12:43There'll be some changes made.
00:12:47or
00:13:09Yes, yes, yes, I know, yes.
00:13:12Oh, excuse me.
00:13:14Please don't go.
00:13:15But I saw her two hours ago.
00:13:16What's the matter with her now?
00:13:19Oh, I see.
00:13:20Well, uh, hold on a minute, will you?
00:13:23You looking for David?
00:13:24Yes.
00:13:25I thought the house looked a little brighter this evening.
00:13:27You're the new governess?
00:13:28Yes.
00:13:29Well, David's in the living room with a creature named Goodwin.
00:13:32Well, if Mr. Fielding has company, I'll...
00:13:34Oh, I'd hardly call Goodwin company.
00:13:36He's one of the local pests.
00:13:38You go in, I'll join you.
00:13:40Well, you better phone her and tell her I'll drop around about 9.30 to put her to bed.
00:13:44Besides this other place, being more modern and easier on servants.
00:13:48A lot nearer the shipyard, too.
00:13:50Oh, come in.
00:13:51This is Mr. Goodwin, Miss Howard.
00:13:53How do?
00:13:53Sit down, won't you?
00:13:54I'll be through in just a moment.
00:14:00Look, it takes me exactly 10 minutes to get to the shipyard.
00:14:03You understand, Mr. Fielding, I'm just looking out for your interests.
00:14:06If you'd listened to me, you would have gotten rid of this house long ago.
00:14:10It's gloomy, it's damp, it's old-fashioned.
00:14:11It's full of cockroaches, the roof's falling in, and the plumbing's coming apart.
00:14:15This is a private conversation, if you don't mind, Dr. Evans.
00:14:17Why wouldn't I mind?
00:14:18I was asked here for a game of cribbage.
00:14:20You understand, Mr. Fielding, it's of no consequence to me one way or the other.
00:14:23Except for your commission.
00:14:24Just a minute now, Dr. Evans.
00:14:26It's in the whole 15 years I've been in business in this town.
00:14:29Have I ever let a commission get between me and a client?
00:14:31I wouldn't know. I haven't been watching you.
00:14:36Good night, all.
00:14:38Good night, Goodwin.
00:14:41You're pretty.
00:14:43Last one was pretty, too.
00:14:48Subtle little fellow, isn't he? What's he after this time?
00:14:50You heard him.
00:14:53Would you care for a drink, Miss Howard?
00:14:55Thank you, I don't drink.
00:14:56Well, you don't have to make a virtue of it.
00:14:59Well, why not? It's a refreshing touch around here.
00:15:01Is it?
00:15:02Oh, you two haven't met.
00:15:04Yes, we have.
00:15:05In the library.
00:15:06Quite casually, but very pleasantly.
00:15:09How'd you make out with the children, Miss Howard?
00:15:11Everything all right?
00:15:12I think so.
00:15:13Ellen and I read all about the cowardly lion, and I put her hair in curlers.
00:15:17How about Barney?
00:15:19Barney and I had a talk, too.
00:15:21You mean you had a talk.
00:15:23Let's have it, Miss Howard.
00:15:24What do you really think about Barney?
00:15:25He seems very intelligent.
00:15:27He is very intelligent.
00:15:28He's also tricky and over-emotional.
00:15:30If you cross him, he'll find a way to pay you back double.
00:15:33On top of that, he has a vile temper, and he's an unprincipled little liar.
00:15:36You make him sound like a little monster.
00:15:38Do I?
00:15:40I thought I made him sound like my son.
00:15:42Miss Howard has hardly been here long enough to see the resemblance.
00:15:45Don't believe a word he says.
00:15:46Why don't?
00:15:48It just seems so unfair.
00:15:49Does it?
00:15:50You time for another game of cribbage, Charles?
00:15:52No, I must be getting along.
00:15:54Where to?
00:15:54To the hospital.
00:15:55I have to look in on Mrs. Dextock.
00:15:57Oh, good.
00:15:57You can give me a lift.
00:15:58I'm going that way.
00:16:02You're not the nervous sort, I hope.
00:16:03You'll be alone here a great deal.
00:16:06Mr. Fielding?
00:16:07Yes?
00:16:08I meant to give you this.
00:16:12Where'd you find it?
00:16:13The dressing table in my room.
00:16:16I see.
00:16:22Are you from Boston, Miss Howard?
00:16:23We lived in Sharon.
00:16:25Oh, well, then you're used to small towns.
00:16:27You won't be too bored here.
00:16:28I'm sure I won't.
00:16:29Miss Howard,
00:16:31if you'd like something to read,
00:16:33you'll find it right in there.
00:16:34Just help yourself.
00:16:35When I'm out at night,
00:16:36this light is always left on.
00:16:38I'll turn it off when I come home.
00:16:40Good night, Miss Howard.
00:16:41Good night.
00:16:45Good night.
00:16:46Good night, Mr. Fielding.
00:16:51Well, what did you think of her?
00:16:53Well, for once in his life,
00:16:54Goodwin was right.
00:16:54She is pretty, very pretty.
00:16:55That's not what I meant.
00:16:57Still, it doesn't do any harm, does it?
00:17:23Oh, good evening.
00:17:25I'm sorry to disturb you.
00:17:26I wonder if I might use your telephone to call a cab.
00:17:29I think it's going to rain again.
00:17:31Of course.
00:17:32Come in.
00:17:37It's in here.
00:17:37Oh, thank you.
00:17:41There are no public telephones anywhere near here.
00:17:44Shall I call it for you?
00:17:45Oh, please do.
00:17:48I'll do it.
00:17:48I promise I'll do it.
00:17:50She's downstairs.
00:17:51She came this afternoon,
00:17:52but I'll do it honest.
00:17:53Be sure now, Barney,
00:17:55or I'll crush my heart and hope to die
00:17:56in a cellar full of rats.
00:17:58You're a good boy, Barney.
00:18:00Who is that?
00:18:01Hello?
00:18:03Barney, who are you talking to?
00:18:06Barney, who was that?
00:18:21Barney, I heard you.
00:18:21Barney, I heard you.
00:18:22You were talking to me.
00:18:33Barney, who was that on the phone, Barney?
00:18:37Barney, who was that on the phone?
00:18:37I heard you talking to somebody.
00:18:40You said I'll do it.
00:18:41What did she tell you to do?
00:18:43She told me to be a good boy.
00:18:46I don't believe that, Barney.
00:18:50If you want to use the phone again,
00:18:51you are to ask my permission.
00:18:53Do you understand?
00:18:54Yes, Miss Howard.
00:18:56You shouldn't be reading.
00:18:57You should be asleep.
00:18:58Yes, Miss Howard.
00:18:59I'm sorry.
00:19:15I'm sorry.
00:19:33Did you get your cab?
00:19:35Oh, I hope you don't mind my coming in here.
00:19:38I wanted to see the back garden, but I'm afraid it's too dark.
00:19:41Our garden?
00:19:42No, my garden.
00:19:44But I thought that...
00:19:45I'm Marion Tygarth.
00:19:47Oh, that was your father's house?
00:19:49No.
00:19:51The Commodore was my husband.
00:19:53I thought of him...
00:19:54As an old man?
00:19:56Well, yes.
00:19:57He was.
00:19:58A mean old man.
00:20:00He was the meanest man I've ever known.
00:20:02When he was gone, I tried to feel sorry, but he died abroad, you know.
00:20:12Does David Fielding still live here?
00:20:15Yes.
00:20:16Is he as handsome as ever?
00:20:17Yes, he's...
00:20:18He looks younger than I do, doesn't he?
00:20:21Yes.
00:20:22He is?
00:20:24Are you his second wife?
00:20:25No, I'm not Mrs. Fielding.
00:20:27I'm the governess.
00:20:29Then he didn't marry again after the...
00:20:31accident.
00:20:33No.
00:20:36That must be your cab.
00:20:37Do you like it here in New Bristol?
00:20:39I've only been here a few hours.
