In this video, I explain why the standard cholesterol test your doctor runs is missing a critical risk factor: Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a).

You can have perfect LDL, HDL, and triglycerides — and still have dangerous plaque building in your arteries. Most doctors don't test for Lp(a) because it's not part of the standard panel. But 1 in 5 people have elevated levels and don't even know it.

I'm a retired doctor with 30 years of experience, and I'm here to fill in the gaps your doctor might have missed.

🔬 IN THIS VIDEO:
• Why "normal" cholesterol doesn't mean you're safe
• What Lipoprotein(a) is and why it's dangerous
• Why you can't lower Lp(a) with diet, exercise, or statins
• The one test you should ask your doctor for

👉 Ask your doctor for the Lp(a) test at your next visit.

00:00They lied to you about your cholesterol.
00:03Not intentionally, but they gave you incomplete information.
00:10And that incomplete information could cost you your life.
00:16Let me explain.
00:18You go to your doctor for your annual checkup.
00:23They run your blood work.
00:25A few days later, you get a call.
00:30Everything is fine.
00:31Your cholesterol looks great.
00:33Keep doing what you're doing.
00:36You feel relieved.
00:41You think you're safe.
00:44But here's what they didn't tell you.
00:47The standard cholesterol panel only measures a few things.
00:52Your total cholesterol, your LDL, your HDL, and triglycerides.
01:04If these numbers look normal, you get a clean bill of health.
01:10But there is a problem.
01:15Those numbers did not tell you the whole story.
01:20There's another particle floating around in your blood.
01:25One that most doctors never test for.
01:30It's called the lipoprotein little a.
01:32Or LP little a for short.
01:34And it could be silently destroying your arteries right now.
01:42Lipoprotein little a is an LDL particle with an extra protein attached.
01:50The extra protein makes it stickier, more inflammatory, and more dangerous.
02:00Here's the scary part.
02:04You can have perfect cholesterol numbers and still have dangerously high lipoprotein little a.
02:14Your LDL could be 100.
02:16Your HDL could be 60.
02:20Your doctor tells you everything looks great.
02:24Meanwhile, lipoprotein little a is building up plaque in your arteries.
02:31And you have no idea.
02:38Why don't doctors test for it?
02:41There are a few reasons.
02:43First, it's not part of the standard panel.
02:48Doctors have to specifically order it.
02:53Many don't even think to.
02:56Second, it's genetic.
03:00You can't lower lipoprotein delay with diet or exercise.
03:05You can't lower it with statins.
03:09In fact, statins make it higher.
03:11So doctors think, why test for something we can't change?
03:17But that's the wrong way to look at it.
03:21If you know your lipoprotein little a is high, you can be more aggressive about controlling everything else, your blood
03:29pressure, your other cholesterol markers, your lifestyle factors.
03:35You can work with your doctor to reduce your overall cardiovascular risk.
03:42You see, knowledge is power.
03:46And ignorance can be deadly.
03:49Studies show that elevated lipoprotein little a affects about 20% of the population.
03:56That's one in five people.
04:01One in five people have an elevated lipoprotein little a.
04:05And most of them have no idea.
04:09They're walking around thinking they're healthy because their doctor told them their cholesterol was fine.
04:19So here's what I want you to do.
04:22The next time you're with your doctor, ask them to test your lipoprotein little a.
04:30It's a simple blood test.
04:32Most labs can do it.
04:35You deserve to know the full picture, not just part of it.
04:41Your doctor didn't lie to you to hurt you.
04:45They just didn't tell you the whole truth.
04:49Now you know.
