00:04Ancient Pueblo societies of the American Southwest, they existed and fell over a period of around 800 years.
00:11But now experts say the shifting and changing of those societies and their eventual downfall could be a historical warning
00:18for us all.
00:18Saying that while climate change and droughts certainly contributed to the hardships of the Pueblo peoples,
00:23it was their recovery periods from hardships that were the best indicators of societal collapse.
00:28According to Science Alert, the researchers looked at periods where Pueblo construction lulled and cross-referenced that with historical information
00:35from previously gathered artifacts,
00:37finding that the longer it took the Pueblo societies to recover from small changes around them, the less resilient that
00:42society became.
00:43This included the researchers finding more markers of violence during these periods.
00:47In fact, the researchers say that at three particular points during the Pueblo civilization, 700, 900 and 1140 CE,
00:54they believed common modern problems like wealth inequality and racial injustice were driving factors to divide their society.
01:01But this is nothing new. Scientists have seen regional collapses like this before all over the world, including in Neolithic
01:07Europe.
01:08A reminder to us all, a warning of the dangers of an ever-growing divide within our own society.
01:12There is a warning, at least one.
01:13But this is a different area that can be a part of the Pueblo society.
01:14I think that is true.
01:15The Pueblo society can only become very balanced, but it is a certain thing per se,
