00:13to confirm her whereabouts that morning but anything past that was a huge mystery my first
00:18thought was what did he do to her what has he done when people become obsessed they can escalate to
00:25murder every one of her friends are possible suspects police have a very small window of
00:32opportunity before something really bad could happen the smell of decomposing flesh is coming
00:39from the trunk of the car no one would have expected this kind of an outcome this is not a
00:45crime of passion there was something that was thought out deliberately to lie for nine months
00:51is ruthless it's calculated it's evil to plan this it's disturbing it's insanity
01:15austin is the capital of texas it's a very safe city compared to other major metropolitan cities
01:21and really the crime problem there is more of lesser crimes petty crimes misdemeanors
01:31but on december 12 2019 a patrol officer takes a missing person report
01:38someone named shane curry calls the austin police department and let him know that his fiancee and
01:44his baby who was two and a half weeks old they're missing that right away is going to send this
01:49to
01:49another level of concern so they immediately call for the on-duty detective in the missing persons unit
01:57when investigators arrived on scene they meet shane who had called the police that night and he
02:02said his fiancee heidi broussard was a 33 year old beautiful mother of two they had a son silas
02:10he's six years old and a precious little baby girl who was two and a half weeks old named margo
02:15their son silas was home with shane only heidi and newborn margo they're missing
02:22what's really important in missing people cases is when's the last time the person was seen
02:28you always start to search there so shane laid out the timeline
02:34he told investigators that day started out like most normal days shane got up about 6 a.m
02:41and he got ready for work and he left for work about 6 30. heidi ended up getting up with
02:45both
02:46kids and was getting silas ready to go to school that morning heidi called him at 8 30 that morning
02:51after leaving the school she said she had dropped off their son that's the last time that shane spoke
02:58to heidi shane gets back to his apartment about 2 30 after he's done working for the day
03:06shane finds the apartment completely empty no heidi no baby he initially thought maybe she had
03:14just taken the baby and was visiting somebody in the apartment complex so he starts looking around
03:21and he notices her vehicle in the apartment complex ends up going to her vehicle and finding it unlocked
03:27inside is her purse her wallet and a few other items that heidi would never leave behind
03:34one thing missing was her cell phone shane told us he called heidi gets nothing but then he realizes
03:44hey i better get to the elementary school to pick up my son shane he said he goes to the
03:50elementary
03:50school he picks up his son goes back home heidi does not show up
03:58he started to be concerned on why was she not showing up this is unlike her what happened
04:05so he's calling her repeatedly and her phone is just going to voicemail
04:10then he starts making phone calls to her friends her family he calls rachel one of heidi's co-workers
04:17and megan one of heidi's best friends nobody has had any contact with her so he tries her cell phone
04:26again nothing so shane said at that point in time and about 7 30 it was really getting concerned
04:34so he called the austin police department to report her as missing
04:41heidi's case was different it wasn't just a missing woman it's a missing woman with a two-week-old baby
04:47police really stepped into action because of the age of the baby the urgency of finding this
04:53newborn as investigators search the apartment there's no forced entry in the apartment there's
05:00no signs of struggle in the apartment there was nothing out of place there was nothing you know
05:06thrown around the room everything was seemingly normal they didn't find any forensic evidence that
05:12a crime had been committed there
05:16but one of the things that concerned the investigators was that shane said that the baby
05:22was having some issues with taking food and there had to be a formula mixture with breast milk
05:28the diaper bag special food are still in the apartment baby margo had health complications from
05:36birth she had jaundice so heidi would have taken this special formula that margo needed
05:41she knows better than to leave all of that behind what woman takes a two-week-old baby without food
05:48without diapers without her purse police would certainly consider the possibility that since
05:54she had so recently given birth there could be a postpartum complication is she depressed is she
06:00suicidal a lot of moms do go through postpartum depression right after having a child but shane told
06:07investigators that heidi was in a really good place she didn't suffer from postpartum and she was doing
06:11really well after the birth of margo at this point we think this is a legitimate kidnapping of a woman
06:18and
06:18a baby so austin police and their detectives immediately do a neighborhood canvas of the apartment complex to see if
06:26anyone had seen anything noticed anything strange but people saw nothing and the apartment complex didn't have cameras
06:37at that point in time we did what's called a reverse 9-1-1 where the 9-1-1 system
06:43actually calls every
06:45telephone number in a specific geographic area to alert them that someone is missing a baby's missing and there
06:53was a press conference and heidi just having a baby it really grabbed our attention heidi and margo were
07:01last seen on thursday december 12th here in austin texas heidi is a 33 year old white female she stands
07:07five foot three 150 pounds if you see heidi or margo please contact the austin police department or your
07:13local law enforcement agency young mother suddenly goes missing very young baby missing with her the
07:23police are concerned about foul play the reality is that heidi broussard was an attractive young
07:32woman with a small child she would be a very vulnerable victim if somebody were looking for one
07:39an eyewitness saw heidi and baby margo getting inside of a vehicle the address was given out when the raid
07:46was announced and oh my god that was when all hell broke loose
08:01heidi broussard and her little baby girl who was two and a half weeks old named margo they're missing
08:06and the reverse 9-1-1 search called out about 4 000 of the neighbors but no leads were found
08:15the next day on the 13th the austin police detectives started talking to immediate family
08:21and heidi's friends my friend rachel she called me and told me that heidi was missing i was just like
08:30what do you mean she's missing i don't think your brain processes what's really going on but when i was
08:36told that she never picked silas up from school i knew that something was wrong your mind goes with
08:43the unanswered questions is she being taken care of is the baby being taken care of is she being fed
08:50are
08:50they cold you know are they alone you just you don't know investigators want to know all the details
09:02about heidi who was she did she have any mental illness is there trouble at home that led them to
09:08leave i told the police heidi rocked being a mom she truly rocked it her kids were everything to her
09:18she would absolutely never leave silas and me knowing the turmoil that her and shane had been in
09:29previously my first thought was what did he do to her what has he done in my experience the largest
09:38majority of the time when things like this happen it's going to be the spouse the fiance the boyfriend
09:45someone who is close to the victim so of course the police are going to look at shane first
09:53we grew up in lake charles louisiana when heidi was in her mid-20s she worked at the casino for
09:59a
09:59while living her best life she was a cocktail waitress and had met shane there and fell in love
10:10they had one of those relationships it was a little tumultuous it was back and forth
10:14but pretty early on she found out she was pregnant of course the way we were raised her getting
10:21pregnant out of quote-unquote wedlock was definitely not the way you want to tell your family but she
10:29always wanted to be a mom they moved to austin right before silas was born and they had silas and
10:36nothing else mattered they were together eight years but unfortunately her and shane had broke up a lot
10:45she told me about abuse whether it's financial emotional mental but we all thought she knows when
10:53enough is enough and the last breakup that was it that was going to be it but then early that
11:01year
11:02she found out she was pregnant with margo and she told me she wanted to give it another shot because
11:08she wanted her family she wanted the unit and she wanted her kids to have that come hell or high
11:14water she was going to make her family work it's not unreasonable to wonder if something had reemerged
11:23from the previous conflicts that they had had that was now creating strife in their relationship again
11:32next shane was brought into austin police department to do a real formal in-depth interview
11:38through the course of the interviews with shane it was obvious there were some troubles in the
11:43relationship but it's natural to have troubles in relationships shane told the police that him and
11:48heidi were in a good place and tells them there was never any physical abuse and the last time he
11:55spoke
11:56with her it was the day she went missing she was just leaving silas at school she told him what
12:01she
12:01did at the school and that she ended up getting three books for silas and she was really excited to
12:06be able to read to him that night so while they continue speaking with shane investigators need to
12:12verify when heidi had last been seen austin police go through the surveillance from her son's school and
12:19they find footage of her dropping off her son for school she ends up getting caught on the camera
12:25at about 8 12 that morning heidi broussard was last seen in this image released by austin police
12:32smiling and wearing a purple sweatshirt her assumption is that they're alive and the sooner
12:38that we can find them the better so they were able to confirm her whereabouts that morning but anything
12:44past that was a huge mystery now investigators need to find out from shane where he was does he have
12:53an alibi in this case shane said he was at work his boss confirmed that he was at work all
12:59day as he
13:00was supposed to be so there was nothing atypical about his day shane was very helpful he gave the
13:07police his cell phone we could see when she called him that he had fact had talked to her on
13:12december
13:1312th he had already let them search in the apartment he let them look at the car so there
13:18was nothing he was holding back his alibis checking out also looking into shane there was nothing that
13:25popped up that said there was any domestic violence that there were any police calls for service at the
13:31address as far as law enforcement was concerned he was not part of heidi being missing so at this point
13:39the police have very little to go on because this child is so young just a few weeks old has
13:47some
13:47medical complications and just needs basic needs taken care of investigators have a very small window
13:53of opportunity before something really bad could happen so i called the chief of the austin police
13:59department and said hey the fbi has a lot of resources we can bring we have the card team a
14:07group of
14:07investigators intelligence analysts technicians that focus on child abductions one of the things we
14:15brought to bear in this particular case is something called the fbi's child abduction rapid deployment team
14:21that we deploy at the request of our state and local partners whenever a child is abducted
14:28our investigators move out very quickly to start looking very aggressively where could she be
14:34where could this baby be we need to find heidi and her new baby as soon as possible
14:47heidi and her new baby have been missing for a number of days the fbi card team start looking hard
14:54for
14:54heidi after they speak with him on december 13th investigators moved on from shane the next step once
15:03you rule out a spouse or a partner is you start to look at every one of her acquaintances her
15:08family
15:09neighbors everyone she worked with and you really have to start digging in on all of those people as
15:16possible suspects investigators investigators learned that heidi was very bubbly very social and very
15:25outgoing she was someone who had a lot of friends and she was like the go-to of the group
15:32i told the
15:33police heidi loves everybody she takes everybody in she didn't see the red flags and people they said
15:40she was very loyal i mean her friends date back from when she was a teen me rachel and heidi
15:47we were
15:47just best friends and we go to church camp every year we met megan and caressa at church camp in
15:55columbus texas heidi and them became good friends and they've always kept in touch
16:03it's kind of funny when heidi got pregnant with silas we were pregnant at the same time i was pregnant
16:09with my second one and she was pregnant with her first and you know she was so excited we were
16:13both
16:14having boys and when heidi had gotten pregnant with margo her best friend megan was having a baby too
16:23and they were excited to be pregnant together and just to have the same due date heidi was
16:30always the cheerleader when she loved you she loved you and she'd never let you go no matter where
16:37anybody lived you know she was always the lifeline that kept everybody together so when heidi went
16:46missing i thought it was either shane or definitely a stranger because none of heidi's friends would
16:53hurt heidi i know it's shane i know he did it i know it's him it's got to be like
17:01who else would it be
17:06even though investigators were able to confirm shane's alibi heidi's friends still were kind of
17:13side-eyeing shane just because they knew heidi and shane had a toxic relationship there was a lot of
17:19speculation around him so i wanted to put together a search team i was like we need to go find
17:25her
17:33i became involved in this case when heidi's loved ones called equi-search because of her
17:40disappearance that search is involved in volunteer search efforts we don't charge a nickel we'll be
17:48part of a search and helping families we're not part of an investigation but many times we've given
17:55them information that's led to some pretty good results i remember talking to heidi's friends and
18:05other family members i talked to a very close friend her name was megan she was telling me the stories
18:13about heidi and shane they were having some problems and she says knowing what i know about that
18:21relationship it wouldn't surprise me if shane did something to her and i said he really feels oh he's
18:29capable and megan said he's more than capable she pointed 100 to shane
18:40when we started that search in austin area i met with shane met with shane's dad there was many many
18:47volunteers that wanted to get involved so we put together some atvs and some foot searchers
18:55here in austin there's a lot of different terrain that you go looking through you have zilker park
19:00you have all the green belts you have natural waterways i actually mark spots on maps that she
19:08possibly could have walked to or she possibly could have taken a cab too shane and i spent a lot
19:16of time
19:16together driving around kind of looking at different areas everybody reacts different you know but i
19:23never heard his voice sound like he was going to break down and cry his demeanor just wasn't at all
19:31what i thought that it should have been it seemed strange to say the least
19:41wow we were looking for her we were all talking trying to keep up to date with everything but there
19:48was no trace i was just like well will this ever be solved because it didn't feel like they were
19:53getting
19:53anywhere there were some calls that came in with possible sightings but none of them ended up be really
20:01credible after some of the search efforts that we did we haven't found anything we don't have anywhere
20:09else to go
20:14so next an emergency order was filed with heidi's cell phone company
20:19to see was the phone hitting we call it pinging was the cell phone active and hitting somewhere
20:24that request went through and it came back that her phone was either off or at a battery
20:29and it had not pinged anywhere since pinging at the house on december 12th the day that heidi
20:36disappears so he started canvassing through the neighborhood again because a lot of times what
20:42you find is people see things that they don't know are important until you really jog their brain
20:49this time one witness described a four-door sedan of a light color that she saw go around towards the
20:58back where heidi's apartment was then another neighbor actually remembered seeing somebody with
21:05the description of heidi and margo getting inside of a similar vehicle so we're starting to get a
21:12little bit more of a picture of the last time anyone had seen heidi but when people are missing you're
21:18going down different investigative avenues at the same time as we interviewed more of heidi's friends
21:23a couple of people told us that one of heidi's friends acted odd during the delivery of heidi's
21:30baby so investigators go to the hospital and interview delivery staff the nurse remembered right
21:38after heidi gave birth to margo most of the family got to hold the baby well shane's dad was ready
21:44to
21:44hold the baby and heidi's friend stepped in and said hold on and aggressively took the baby from him
21:50she acts very possessive with the baby acts very strange in general and literally takes the baby
21:57from the grandfather because she wants to hold the baby
22:02once we got that story of what happened in the maternity room our behavioral analysis people right
22:09away said hey we really got to look at this this could possibly be a maternal desire type situation
22:17maternal desire is a mental state where a woman has an insatiable drive to acquire a child that's why
22:26maternity rooms are so locked down because unfortunately there's been a number of instances
22:31where people have gotten in there and stolen a baby when we heard how heidi's friend acted with the baby
22:40it made us very suspicious about her mental state now we have a suspicious person our investigators
22:50from the card team said we got to go hard on this we need to figure out who is this
22:56woman and where could
23:06she be
23:08the police had talked to the hospital staff where heidi gave birth to baby margo
23:14the nurses remember one of heidi's good friends was acting super possessive over margo right after she
23:21was born police were concerned about the possibility of maternal desire which can turn into something
23:30that is not altogether different from what i would call delusional this baby's mind i need this baby i must
23:38have it when people get into that sort of delusional or semi-delusional world reality doesn't matter anymore
23:48and when people become that obsessed and that divorced from reality that can escalate to extreme
23:55violence it can escalate to murder so investigators decided to take this very seriously right from the
24:02beginning so investigators asked shane who in fact was in the hospital room when heidi was delivering
24:09margo and he mentioned megan megan humphrey which was one of her closest friends
24:17once we identify megan as the woman in the maternity ward with the strange behavior we start going
24:23back and re-interviewing people to say what can you tell us about her what's her timeline
24:29and any of these other pieces we have could it fit back to her
24:38so heidi's friends told investigators that megan lived in houston but they still kept in touch
24:43megan was one of heidi's best friends since their early teens but while heidi and megan were really
24:49close friends most of heidi's friends didn't really love megan when heidi introduced us unfortunately
24:56i got a bad vibe from megan i didn't like her right away but heidi's heart was so pure
25:05she loved everybody so i mean she's been friends with her for many many years
25:10according to her friends they just thought megan was a little weird didn't really click with her
25:15could give or take her but heidi was you know the embracer
25:23through the course of re-interviews asking about megan we find out megan announced she's pregnant not
25:30long after heidi announced she was pregnant when she was told about the pregnancy megan was like
25:35we're gonna be pregnant together november 26th the day that margot was born megan came down to austin
25:45megan was about 37 weeks pregnant at this time heidi's friends told police it was remarkable that
25:53she had driven about three hours from houston to austin to be present for the birth of baby margot
26:01and just a few weeks later on december the 8th or the 9th she tells everyone she gave birth to
26:07her
26:07own baby named luna investigators ask her friends did you see a picture of the baby have you seen
26:15this baby and all of them said i haven't seen picture of her wow you're a new mom you're proud
26:24of
26:25this baby and you haven't showed a picture so that was very quickly looked at but there's no evidence
26:33that she had a baby at all and she really starts rising on the list of of suspects you start
26:40doing
26:40research and now things start to click she actually has a four-door light-colored sedan like the car that
26:48somebody saw heidi and the baby get into in the parking lot when they went missing investigators
26:55start looking into all the red light cameras in the area as well as license plate readers and their
27:01license plate readers showing her in the area the day that heidi disappears also after her cell
27:07phone records were retrieved her phone had been pinged that day on different cell phone towers that
27:13were located near heidi's apartment so now at this point investigators put together a lineup of multiple
27:19people and megan humphrey and take this lineup back to the neighbor for an eyewitness account when they
27:25showed her megan humphrey the neighbor actually said this person is the person that she saw heidi and
27:33margot getting in the vehicle with on the morning of their disappearance
27:42obviously she is now suspect number one in this case is she going to harm the baby is she going
27:47to
27:47run is she going to do something you don't always want to do an interview right away because obviously
27:52the minute you do an interview they know that they're a suspect and we are very concerned for the
27:59safety of the child so the decision was let's put a surveillance team all around the house in houston
28:05to see is there any sign of heidi a baby anything strange the texas rangers were called in to assist
28:14them with the surveillance on megan's house in houston texas we see her car in the backyard it fits the
28:23four-door light color of sedan that one witness described to us at a point during the surveillance
28:30a man leaves the house let's follow him see who he is where's he going he goes to target where
28:37he is
28:38observed buying baby supplies the texas rangers make the decision hey this is a life safety issue
28:45we're concerned about the health of the baby we're going to intervene right now so the texas rangers
28:50grab him in the parking lot they start asking him questions he identified himself as christopher
28:57green they find out this is megan's ex-boyfriend whom she lives with they asked him if he had a
29:03newborn child and he said he did and they told him we're looking into why heidi as well as her
29:08child
29:08are missing and they show him a picture of baby margo and he said that's my baby that's my baby
29:15at home
29:24investigators stopped christopher green megan's ex-boyfriend whom she lives with after he leaves
29:30target he had a bunch of baby items he says why i'm buying this stuff because my girlfriend had a
29:36baby
29:37but the texas rangers show him a picture of the missing baby and he says that's the baby that's at
29:44my house
29:45and then they ask him if he was present at the birth christopher green told investigators that
29:53he's an oil field worker when he arrived home from a work trip on december 13th his ex-girlfriend megan
30:00had given birth a few days before that while he was gone he said well why didn't you call me
30:06she's
30:07like please don't be angry but i ended up having the baby at a birthing center obviously if you're the
30:13father of a baby it's very surprising that you were not present when the baby was born the whole
30:18story doesn't hold water it doesn't make sense doesn't add up at all so based on all the information
30:24that christopher green gave authorities at that point they had enough probable cause to go back and
30:30enter the property where megan was with the baby
30:37i had been doing podcasting for roughly a year before the heidi case came about it was december 19th
30:45i interviewed her friend caressa to raise awareness about heidi and the baby's disappearance after a
30:51week of heidi being missing i think her friends and family were getting really desperate so we are
30:57talking to heidi's best friend caressa we were live on youtube so everybody is participating in real
31:05time everything of hers was there besides her phone and her keys which is very very odd yeah as the
31:12interview went on someone in the chat had said breaking news they're raiding a home in houston
31:17and that changed everything wait a second you guys we have breaking news northwest harris county
31:22home swarmed by fbi and austin police the address was given out when the raid was announced and
31:30someone in the chat started searching the address to that house and someone found a baby registry
31:38megan humphrey and christopher green oh my god oh my god what what that's megan her best friend
31:47what what oh my god that's megan's house and that was when all hell broke loose i'm over here freaking
31:57out guys sorry oh i'm so sorry caressa i'm so sorry
32:11authorities enter the property where megan was with the baby and rescued the baby some of the
32:18agents take this baby to a hospital to make sure that the baby is okay then they begin to interview
32:24megan at the house megan tells the investigators the baby was her baby girl named luna okay when did
32:32you have the baby where did you have the baby she couldn't tell them where she had the baby
32:36how could you not remember since we were pretty sure this is heidi's baby now where is heidi
32:45investigators expanded their search and they start looking for heidi
32:50they are searching everywhere to see if there's any evidence of her being alive
32:58walking through the backyard immediately one of the texas rangers is struck with this smell
33:04that's coming out of the car as investigators you know that smell they pop the trunk and inside of
33:11the trunk they find a black duffel bag
33:15and upon opening the black duffel bag they find a female deceased pretty quickly they realized based on
33:22photos they had this is in fact heidi although we were very happy to retrieve the baby alive and healthy
33:32it's hard to celebrate that when you know that heidi died
33:38we have a fox news alert for you a dead body and a baby found alive in that search connected
33:45to the
33:45missing mother down in texas heidi broussard and her newborn daughter margo
33:49i'm watching news coverage and then
34:01you see the stretcher with the body pad
34:07and you know that your friends in them
34:11your friends are there
34:15i just remember screaming
34:20um and i'm just screaming like she she's gone she's dead
34:28i got a call from a detective says hey i just want to make you aware
34:32that we're at one of heidi's friends house i can't get a lot of information right now but
34:38are taking megan in custody but we do have the baby heidi is deceased
34:48and um just thinking man if i could just see shane right now and just hug him and say i'm
34:54sorry
34:55i'm sorry man i'm sorry once the baby was released from the hospital and dna testing proved that it
35:03was heidi's baby she was returned to the family
35:13based on evidence license plate readers showing her in the area the day that heidi disappears her
35:19cell phone records heidi's baby at her house in houston her car with heidi in the trunk
35:27when you add all that together we know megan is responsible for this crime
35:33i'm angry we're all angry
35:38why heidi your best friend is supposed to be the person you trust more than anybody
35:46the houston coroner did an autopsy and declared that heidi was killed by strangulation
35:54authorities charged megan with capital murder and two counts of kidnapping an account of
35:59tampering with evidence a human corpse for putting heidi in the trunk of the vehicle but megan would
36:05never speak with investigators about the details i'm not sure we're ever going to know the full story
36:09behind what happened between heidi and megan but it was pretty obvious there was a plan that was
36:16thought out deliberately over the course of months the timing of megan's announcement that she was
36:23pregnant doesn't seem accidental or coincidental she was probably planning right from the outset
36:31to take heidi's baby from her and the only way that that timeline would work is if she too became
36:38pregnant right around the same time the idea that somebody could lie for nine months to everybody
36:44they love is ruthless it's calculated it's evil so now at this point investigators must ask how in the
36:56world did megan's ex-boyfriend not know this whole time it sounds very suspicious so we really start to
37:05think about was this person part of this was christopher green planning this with megan
37:21when megan was arrested once they had found heidi and the baby a lot of people questioned how megan's
37:29boyfriend could not know but when the investigators talked to megan's ex-boyfriend the story that he
37:37told them was plausible he had broken up with megan months earlier right before megan announced she was
37:45pregnant within days of the now ex-boyfriend kicking her out of the house she comes back and says hey
37:53i'm pregnant and he allows her to move back in they were sleeping in separate rooms they weren't
38:01being intimate with one another so he was clueless he had not seen her naked and could not confirm that
38:08she was pregnant so he took it on her word obviously megan's boyfriend was investigated thoroughly and although
38:16it looks very strange it was determined that he was truthful and he was proven to have nothing to do
38:24with
38:24this crime this is a textbook case of maternal desire where megan was envious of her friend for having a
38:35baby getting pregnant everything that went with it she consciously made the decision i'm going to kill my
38:42best friend to take her baby because that's what i want looking back this is where i think the story
38:51started megan's boyfriend chris he was breaking up with her she's got to figure out how to make him
39:02stay what's the easiest way to keep somebody is to tell him you're pregnant when heidi first announced
39:09her pregnancy with the baby megan told everybody that she was pregnant too then over the course of
39:16the subsequent months she faked a pregnancy she gained a lot of weight she stuffed her belly to show
39:25that she was getting bigger and bigger every single month she created a baby registry and then later
39:31had a baby shower on november 26th heidi gives birth and megan is there with her and then a little
39:40over
39:40a week later megan tells all of her friends that she gave birth to a baby girl named luna on
39:46december 12th
39:47early in the afternoon megan comes to visit heidi at her department complex we don't know exactly how
39:55megan got heidi down to the car but somehow using that friendship megan got heidi to bring the baby
40:02down and see her investigators think that after megan got heidi in the car she strangled her and drove
