00:26Michael then says we have to show that Disneyland is waking up, that there's a new vitality here.
00:34Most of the major movie directors today grew up on the wonderful world of Disney and the wonderful world of
00:40color and Disneyland.
00:42What will happen in the next 10 years is a big input from those kinds of people.
00:49Star Tours represented a radical departure for Disneyland.
00:53It was the first attraction based on a non-Disney movie.
00:56But the Imagineers recognized the cultural phenomenon and argued that the Star Wars universe, from the mind of George Lucas,
01:04held the same public esteem as classic Disney films.
01:10George and Disney became a natural because a lot of the same story elements and excitement that you find in
01:16George's films were a product originally of Walt's films and are more or less, I see it as a continuation
01:21of the greatest in entertainment, a marriage.
01:27WED is a group of these kinds of people.
01:29They spend every day thinking of ways to entertain people, going around the world, looking at new technologies, figuring out
01:39how to adapt those technologies to a creative form.
01:42And I hope nobody ever learns their name so they'll go and try to steal them from us so I
01:47won't mention them anymore.
01:48In the original Star Tours, 40 guests at a time are strapped into the futuristic Star Speeder 3000s with a
01:55first-person view of a wide movie screen in front of them.
01:59Ostensibly, guests are passengers on a quick uneventful jaunt to the forest moon of Endor.
02:04But unfortunately, the novice pilot voiced by Paul Rubens quickly lost his way.
02:09The Star Speeder bursts through a glassy asteroid and crashes into the middle of a battle scene straight out of
02:15the Star Wars trilogies.
02:17Intimidating Imperial cruisers loom, enemy TIE fighters and friendly Rebel X-Wing dart nearby and explosions echo as the ship
02:26frantically maneuvers through lethal dogfight, negotiate the dreaded Death Star's claustrophobic trench, raced up to light speed and thunder back
02:36to its hangar for a final crashing careen.
02:38Throughout the Star Tours experience, obvious and not so obvious references to the Star Wars movie, universe, and Disneyland's own
02:46past added fascinating fun to the thrills of the ride.
02:49The actual droids from the film C-3PO and R2-D2 were on hand with Anthony Daniels reprising his C
02:57-3PO vocals.
03:00Star Tours announces the arrival of the Endor Express.
