Rogue Claimers - Season 2 Episode 16
Transcript
00:06insurance fraud has reached epidemic levels in the UK it's costing us more
00:10than 1.3 billion pounds every year that's almost 3.6 million pounds every
00:16day deliberate crashes bogus personal injuries even phantom pets the fraudsters
00:25are risking more and more to make a quick killing and every year it's adding
00:29around 50 pounds to your insurance bill but insurers are fighting back exposing
00:34just under 15 fake claims every hour armed with the latest fraud busting
00:39technology subject out the vehicle including covert surveillance systems
00:44sophisticated data analysis techniques and specially trained fraud investigators
00:49oh they're catching these chances red-handed instead of getting away with
00:56it even more of these fraudsters are getting caught out this is Road Claimers
01:08today a driver claiming disability with serious back injuries is shamed by surveillance footage I
01:15think the ice on the cake has to be when she's lifting a massive bridge into the back of a
01:20van
01:20I mean this bridge is bigger than she is and the average person wouldn't be able to lift that
01:24an audacious robbery it's quite difficult to take photographs of items that have been stolen 10
01:30days ago but unless you know the thief and revelers on a stag dude turn a minor prank into an
01:36insurance
01:36scam there was comments along the lines of ka-ching we've already run before it got to the races
01:48with 34 million people employed in the UK mishaps at work are inevitable around 60 000 accidents are reported
01:56each year with trips slips and falls the most common these can result in serious injuries and time off work
02:04the transport operator first group employs 30 000 staff and this next case involved one of its drivers
02:12the claimant told us as she was decelerating at the bus the vehicle started juddering quite significantly
02:17and as a result she was jerked severely this judder apparently had some serious effects she told us as a
02:24result of injuries to her neck her back and she had pins and needles in her hand she had psychological
02:29injuries um she had lack of grip to her right hand which is obviously quite significant she could no
02:35longer drive her day-to-day activities were completely impacted and it completely changed her life
02:40with such a long list the claimant was clearly suffering and the financial cost of this case was
02:46escalating we estimate the claim to be worth in the region of about 175 000 pounds and this would be
02:53made up of the claimant's injury loss of earnings there was a claim for benefits also she claimed that
02:58she couldn't do her own chopping for two and a half years so there was a delivery charge on that
03:02um her own solicitor's cost and also the cost of us defending the claim
03:07the bus itself had to be checked as the driver insisted its juddering caused her injuries
03:14first group takes safety very very seriously and once it was reported that there was a fault with the bus
03:19it was immediately taken off the road but investigations revealed this claim might not be what it seemed
03:24our engineers inspected the bus and they found there was a minor fault with the gearbox but they also
03:31tested the level of juddering for us um and they reported but it was completely insignificant it could
03:36not have caused injury in addition we have telematics data which will measure the speed of the bus or any
03:43adverse movement and that registered no no movement at all the mechanical information threw up questions
03:50and the claimant's subsequent behavior only added to the suspicion the claimant carried on working
03:56after the alleged incident for three weeks um she then went off sick for three weeks um after that
04:01she came back for nine months with with no problems but then she started having regular absences which
04:06obviously raised further concerns with us it was time for action if we're presented with a claim where
04:13we've got suspicions of either gross exaggeration or fabricated injury then we will consider surveillance
04:20it's not a decision that's taken lightly but in this instance the footage revealed a whole new
04:26meaning to the phrase being off sick looking at the surveillance um you can clearly see that she's
04:32not got a lack of mobility um we did expect to see her driving perhaps a car picking up shopping
04:38and
04:39that kind of thing but i was really really surprised to see her driving um not just her own car
04:43but large
04:44vans for somebody that's got severe back injury and cannot drive anymore that was just unbelievable
04:53it wasn't just light driving that was keeping the claimant occupied the big vans were being used by a
04:59removal company which was keeping her very busy she told us she had really bad muscle grip in her hand
05:06but then she works for a removals company obviously you would need to have good dexterity to be able to
05:11lift um personal items that people have entrusted to you so that was one of the main discrepancies for us
05:19the removal footage was just the start of what would be damning evidence i think the ice on the cake
05:26has to be when she's lifting a massive fridge into the back of a van i mean this fridge is
05:31bigger than
05:31she is the average person wouldn't be able to lift that but some of the severe back injuries
05:35bizarre could the work absences have actually been moonlighting it certainly doesn't look like
05:44her back is playing up as she lifts and loads and that's the conclusion first group reached too
05:52we sent this footage to the solicitors and we repudiated the claim in full you'd think her lawyers
05:58may have backed off after seeing the claimant was perfectly capable of hauling heavy items
06:02and moving so freely we were completely surprised when the solicitors came back to us and said
06:08regardless of the surveillance they were going to push forward and take us to court
06:11this would be a costly mistake later on
06:15in court it was time to lay the cards on the table first group believed it had a strong case
06:22on the day of the trial we told the claimant solicitors that not only were we going to push for
06:26a fundamental dishonesty finding we were also going to push with contempt and that it could
06:30even result in a custodial sentence
06:34the claimant solicitors did come back to us and say they had spoken to their client
06:38who had broken down at this point realized the game was over and asked if she could walk away
06:44after five years of investigations there's absolutely no way we were going to walk away
06:47from this case we told them the only way we would let it settle is if they paid £30,000
06:53back to our company in legal costs and if she didn't do it in 14 days we take it back
06:58to court
06:58and we would push for contempt
07:02faced with this choice the claimant had only one option
07:06first group got its money back and didn't pursue the contempt case
07:11perhaps the claimant had earned enough in the removals business to cover the costs
07:15after her naive and misjudged attempt to defraud her employer
07:20what she hasn't realized is that we do have access to the latest analytical software
07:25we have surveillance we have telematics all of which disproved her claim
07:31it's extremely disappointing when somebody puts in a claim for something they're not entitled to
07:36it's immoral we have claimants that are genuinely injured
07:39accidents do happen and we'd rather spend our time taking care of them
07:52for those with a taste for the finer things in life an insurance policy is essential
07:57as it can save you being out of pocket should disaster strike
08:03that's especially true for burglaries as thieves are just as partial to big name brands as anyone else
08:19that's what insurance is there for to compensate people who've been the victims of these crimes
08:25so when one of zurich's customers became a target they put in a call
08:31after walk when we came home i just find like some windows on the on the floor then i go
08:37in house
08:37they took as much as they can taking all my wife's draps taking my my like bags my wife's bags
08:44you know the shaving machine they've been taking that as well they're going into the living room
08:49they've been taking the ipad even they've been taking some of my shirts from some of my wife's like
08:55shirts like good brand one like prada and others cars whatever they can they just took it okay and
09:03then then what did you do after that oh we just called the police straight away the caller had done
09:09all the right things and had his crime reference number so now zurich would talk him through the
09:14next steps at that point we will obviously ask for all the details of what happened and what had been
09:19stored in terms of the items then that have been taken have you got a list do you know what's
09:25been
09:25taken yes we have sent the list to police already okay brilliant can you run through that list with me
09:32now okay mark jacob watch rotary watch yeah okay michael calls necklace and watch yeah i test mini
09:51times two powder coat you put on handbag post car key yeah on the half by your coat
10:01the total of the items that he was saying were stolen was in the region of 14 000 pounds so
10:06it's
10:06quite a significant burglary the burglars had expensive taste when we're looking at designer
10:12items we would normally expect somebody to be able to provide purchase receipts and even tell us where
10:17and when they bought them to validate a claim but what if he didn't have them a break-in where
10:24possessions
10:24have been stolen that can take many forms so they could be purchase receipts photographs
10:30really anything that demonstrates that you actually own the items that you're claiming for
10:34the policyholder sent nearly 40 photographs and two photographs of two designer jackets that he said were
10:42worth 750 pounds each surely this was enough to support the claim we'll validate and check all
10:48documents and photographs that are sent to us and photographs in particular have a digital footprint
10:54behind them it's called metadata so we'll always look at the metadata to find out whether it corroborates
11:01with what's been told in terms of the time and date these photographs were taken
11:06the burglary occurred on the 6th of february so when scott got the metadata report through something stood out
11:15strangely in this case they were actually taken after the burglary they were taken on the same day as we
11:20had
11:20asked for these photographs so clearly these weren't of items that were stolen during that break-in
11:25quite difficult to take photographs of items that had been stolen 10 days ago well unless you know the
11:30thief well the claimant appeared to be committing daylight robbery but zurich's investigator wanted to
11:37see if there was a plausible explanation when the policyholder met with our investigator he said that
11:44all the photographs that he provided to support his claim were taken at various stages after these items
11:50had been purchased so not surprisingly he didn't admit that two of the photographs had been taken after the
11:56burglary we challenged the claimant on these particular photographs and after some deliberation said that
12:04the photographs that he had taken were actually of his brother's jackets which happened to be identical
12:09to the ones that he had stolen so he maintained that it was still a genuine claim and these were
12:16his brother's jackets and not the ones that were stolen so we asked for his brother details so that we
12:20could go and speak to him about the purchase of these jackets uh unfortunately there was no responses to
12:26any of our contact so we had to base our decision based on what we had and it wasn't going
12:32to be pretty
12:33this individual was added to the insurance fraud register it's not the kind of register you want
12:37to be on as it will affect your future insurance so not only did he get labeled this would also
12:43be a
12:44cautionary tale because of the exaggeration and therefore the fraud this claim was declined we didn't pay
12:51anything this claim was worth 14 000 pounds we had no proof that the burglary didn't occur so the policy
13:00would have received something um in settlement but as a result of his dishonesty we pay nothing so any
13:07genuine items that he lost in this burglary he wasn't compensated for and he ended up with nothing
13:18later a holiday maker claims he was mugged by a gang but investigators are struggling to see how the
13:24thieves pulled it off to have three different items taken from three different locations we felt that it
13:30needed to be looked into further
13:45in our digital world emojis hashtags and memes are part of everyday life but our smartphones bring
13:52a more complex language to master terms like sims imei numbers blocking and locking are vital for
14:00consumers to understand if a handset is lost or stolen acting fast to block your data and stop anyone
14:07from using your phone is essential these scenarios are all part for the cause for tcs claims which
14:14handles thousands of mobile insurance cases every year we received a claim from a customer that lost his
14:21iphone 8 on the way to work and the phone was valued in excess of 800 pounds in the event
14:26that we
14:27received a claim for a lost or stolen mobile phone we request just a normal timeline of events so
14:31where was the phone being stored was in a pocket in a bag and when did they last see it
14:36and possibly
14:37how could it have ended up being lost or stolen so sophie got one of her team to start gathering
14:42information
14:45okay so we've got you looking to clean for your iphone 8 plus okay what date did this happen it
14:51was
14:51wednesday the 6th i think it is okay so when was the last time you used your phone do you
14:58remember
15:00uh that day and what time that day oh gosh i don't know i don't know so do you and
15:06then after you used
15:07it where do you then put your phone my pocket okay and is that the last time you saw it
15:12yeah okay so just
15:15for this next then if you can just confirm exactly what's happened to your phone in as much detail as
15:19possible yeah um i had i had a one good morning and at some point from leaving my house to
15:25get
15:25me to work i've lost it i couldn't bring them out until i finished work a part of the loss
15:30so they
15:30were blacklisted and they said that they've wiped it what's in everything it sounded like a familiar
15:35story and the good news was that not only was the claimant switched on enough to block the sim
15:41he also had his gadget insured so um if you can just confirm roughly the date you took out the
15:47policy and then the date the incident happened like how long after it happened i did the insurance
15:53so tuesday the the fifth okay and then how long after did the incident happen okay a day after
16:04yeah okay i think i was locked so could sophie when we see a policy that's only been taken out
16:14a day
16:14before a claim needed to be made this is something that we do find quite concerning and the call
16:19handler went straight to the service provider to get verification i've got one of our mutual customers
16:27on the other line and i was just wondering if you can confirm the date that they've um last used
16:31their
16:31phone it was last used on the 23rd of november there can you see like all the calls on there
16:39is like an
16:39itemized list yeah so it was still in use until the 23rd of november there yeah sort of regular use
16:45so you've got like an itemized bill there yeah yeah this was strange as the claimant said he had last
16:51used the phone on december the 6th two weeks later he said he um blocks the phone can you confirm
16:57what
16:57date that was done you've seen that he's put in like a termination yeah um he just said that he
17:02blocked the sim card just because he had it lost the phone he hasn't blocked it he's put a cancellation
17:08in for it now blocking the sim would safeguard this handset from unwanted use cancelling it was a
17:15completely different thing he's cancelled it yeah okay when was that that was the second of the 12.
17:25does it say why you cancelled it it doesn't say why he's put a cancellation in so basically it's running
17:30for the next 30 days now for the 30 days you'll get his final door for it okay so he's
17:34essentially
17:34just cancelled the contract not blocked the sim yeah okay that's fine um yeah i've got everything
17:39there thanks for your help with this new and conflicting information tcs needed to speak to the claimant
17:47they confirmed that you can't the sim card on the 2nd of december and it was last used on the
17:5123rd of
17:52november and it was under your it was under the contact number you gave me under your name as well
17:58and so at this point it does look like this instant happened before you took out the policy
18:03so am i right in thinking that that's what's happening no that's completely that's completely
18:06incorrect i upgraded my phone on the 1st of november and iphone 8 i went when i rang them
18:13or to report it lost they said to me is that the samsung 7 and i said no it's been
18:18upgraded since then
18:19yeah and i have a iphone 8 which i upgraded on the 1st of october okay you just said you
18:28upgraded it on
18:28the 1st of november and now you're saying it was the 1st of october well yeah i didn't i said
18:32you
18:32i said it was two months old go back through your notes i told you 1st of october that's two
18:37months
18:37about two months ago you did say 1st of november because i did just write that down i took out
18:42a new
18:42contract on the 1st of october i've got it written down in front of me okay that's fine if that's
18:47the case
18:47that's fine however they still told me you've cancelled the contract on the 2nd of november
18:51have you got a user id or anything that you sponsored so i can clarify this because this is
18:56absolutely wrong if this isn't correct details you'd have to provide documents to show that this
19:01isn't that's totally fine i can actually provide all the paperwork needed despite having the opportunity
19:06to gather proof and set the record straight we didn't receive any further contact or information
19:11from him as a result of our findings the claim was declined and repudiated in full
19:18and the policy was voided due to the misrepresentation this does have longer
19:22standing effects on the customer so for any future insurance premium
19:26the customer would need to declare to them that they've had a policy voided
19:36holidays are the highlight of the year but when things go wrong travel insurance can help prevent
19:41your perfect getaway descending into the holiday from hell in the uk insurers now handle the claim
19:48every single minute from lost luggage to medical emergencies
19:54sega is a charles taylor company that offers claims and travel assistance
19:58and is all too aware that not all of these claims are as they first appear
20:06customer called us following our holiday in spain because they need to make a claim for stolen
20:10possessions customer told us that he just left the bar having had a few drinks uh he entered a large
20:15group of people on the streets and as he was walking through this large group of people got pushed to
20:19the floor uh he managed to pull himself up and walk through the group of people and once he got
20:24to the end of
20:24this large group of people realized that his wallet watch and phone had all been taken
20:29well basically uh i was on there my friends were ahead of me and uh a guy flashed into me
20:38um i actually just fall over and we got out of sort of the commotion you know just first of
20:44all
20:44that my phone was in his pocket i don't really like that the wallet was missing
20:48okay so the your phone was that in your pocket yeah yeah phone was in my pocket yeah
20:57and your wallet was that in your pocket as well yeah that was in my pocket yeah
21:04the total claim was worth 1400 pounds but with suspicions raised sega was reluctant to push through
21:12a quick payout the customer was really vague during the telephone interview couldn't provide an
21:17explanation as to how he'd been pushed to the grounds and had his phone and wallet taken from two
21:21different pockets he also told them a designer watch had been nicked from his wrist we also couldn't
21:28understand how his watch had also been taken at the same time to have three different items taken from
21:32three different locations we felt that it needed to be looked into further so chris gathered more
21:38information can you just talk me through everything that happened before and everything that happened
21:42afterwards please yeah um we were out uh it was my first evening you know i was kind of like
21:49almost
21:51knocked over so to speak very much lost my balance i had a number of people around me all the
21:58time i
21:58thought they were just helping me stand up i realized these people weren't helping me that i was in some
22:03sort of trouble so i got out of the situation as quick as possible only to find uh that i
22:08had uh
22:10certain items missing right okay and so when you when you fell over what what actually happened there
22:17uh yeah i'm not too sure to be honest as well so there's a lot of holes in the bottle
22:21i lost my foot in
22:21all the strips i'm not so sure do you know if you were pushed at all or attacked or to
22:27be honest
22:27yeah looking back at it it was probably settled i'm just trying to sort of get an understanding
22:33how it was that you were sort of put onto the floor and you had these items taken from your
22:37pocket and
22:38your watch taken at the same time as well i've had someone like help me what i thought was helping
22:44me get up from around my waist another person grabbing my wrist a rock watch wrist i've basically
22:51been pulled in all directions when i realized what was going on yeah a little bit of panic accepted
22:58and the alarm bells were about to ring for chris too insurers have access to various different
23:04databases to prevent fraudulent claims on this occasion we found the customer's previous household
23:09insurance claim on one of those databases and found that the claim related to various personal
23:14possessions including a watch not just any watch it was a designer brand and exactly the same make and
23:22model of the one he was claiming for now once we obtained that information from the household
23:27insurers it was necessary to speak with the customer in more detail the tag watch um you said you
23:33haven't replaced that um do you own any other watches at all um of similar brands um any sort of
23:39designer watches like that of that sort of value no sorry no okay and have you ever owned a tag
23:46watch
23:47at all in the past yeah that one okay is this the only one you've ever had uh yes the
23:54only reason i
23:54ask about i've actually made some inquiries with your household insurer they've told me about a claim
23:59that you had in 2013 for a gym bag that went missing um and in that bag there was actually
24:04a tag watch which
24:05they've made a payment to you in respect of um obviously you said today that you've only ever owned one
24:11tag
24:11watch and you're now making a claim for another one long time ago yeah i did that one long time
24:17again replaced it yeah the replacement that you're claiming for now yeah that's correct yeah okay it's
24:23just on on the claim form that you've written that it was purchased in 2009 which is obviously four
24:28years before that claim you've made with your household insurance um i sort of given the inquiries
24:34that we've made and before we sort of go about requesting the calls and the full file from them
24:38um i do have to give you this opportunity now and it is better to be open and honest at
24:42this stage
24:45sorry is this a second tag watch yeah right okay can i just ask why is it you've written that
24:53this
24:53was purchased in 2009 on the claim form then um but when was the claim well the claim that you
25:01made
25:01with your household insurances in 2013 yeah well it would have been after that day then yeah right
25:09okay well in terms of sort of finalizing our position in respect to the claimants i'm going to be
25:14requesting a full copy of the file uh just to see what what what you claim for i mean obviously
25:19you can
25:19probably appreciate that having just told me that you've only ever owned one tag watch and what i do
25:24is i keep you updated throughout the process of um sort of finalizing our review of your claim and once
25:28we've
25:28sort of um got all the information we need i'll then contact you just to let you know what the
25:32final
25:33outcome of your claim is going to be yeah yeah yeah because what i ended up doing end of buying
25:38um
25:39i just say in march but secondhand because i didn't quite get um full format payout
25:46due to all our concerns uh surrounding the claim given the circumstances and the information we'd
25:51obtained from the customer's household insurance we were satisfied the claim wasn't genuine and for
25:55that reason we repudiated it and invoked the full condition from the policy i believe that given the
26:00value of the claim the customer thought that because it was relatively low value it wouldn't get looked
26:04into into this much detail which was far from the case and he was about to learn the hard way
26:11the details of the claim were passed on to the underwriters of the insurance policy
26:14and then in turn they then passed it on to the police for further action subsequently the customer was
26:20then arrested by the police and at this point he admitted what he had done he then accepted a
26:24police caution for fraud by a false representation the customer's now going to declare this fraudulent
26:29claim and the fact that his claim has been declined whenever he takes out insurance from now on
26:34the customer now also has a police caution on his record for anyone thinking about making a quick buck
26:39in in this fashion it's not worth it
26:53stag and hen parties are renowned for revelry but high spirits can sometimes lead to trouble
26:59across the country each weekend thousands are ferried to party hot spots while accidents are rare when they
27:06do occur the cost can quickly add up as insurer lb discovered when one stag dude trip to the races
27:14hit trouble at a roundabout the claim that came into us was for a relatively minor road traffic accident
27:20involving a coach and a for transit van that we insured these claims were for whiplash type injuries
27:27and so we would estimate those to be around four to five thousand pound per person 20 people on board
27:33this easy value of around a hundred thousand pounds that's a hefty amount to pay out and there were
27:39doubts about the severity of the injuries the claimants were all alleging that this was quite a
27:44forceful impact with them being thrown sideways on the bus both our policyholder and the coach driver
27:49agreed that the accident was very minor these were two very large vehicles in a very minor accident we
27:55didn't feel that there was a risk of injury to the occupants coupled with that with the fact that
28:00out of the 20 people pursuing claims 19 of those were all represented by the same firm of solicitors
28:05which just gave us a little cause for concern and lv felt it was necessary to investigate this further
28:12we contacted the third party driver who made reference to the fact that after the accident he
28:17got back on the coach to check his occupants were all right there was comments along the lines of
28:21ka-ching we've already run before we've got to the races the accident hadn't stopped them in their
28:27tracks they were all able to carry on with the planned trip they had continued with their journey
28:33continued to go to the races and there were social media posts confirming that they've been out in
28:37in a nightclub way to that evening this is not the sort of behavior that we would expect of people
28:42injured in an accident earlier that day however our hapless revelers woke up with more than the usual
28:49hangover all of the claimants attended their gp or their hospital two or three days following the
28:55accident to seek medical attention for their injuries i personally think that this has been
29:00done purely to validate their injury claim knowing that they intended to claim compensation
29:06as we weren't happy with with these claims that were being presented to us we decided to repudiate
29:10the claims however the claimants determined to carry on with the claim decided to issue county
29:15court proceedings against us lv enlisted solicitors kios to enter its defense at the proceedings
29:22and work began examining the details of the case a number of the individuals said that they were unable to
29:29undertake activities at home in particular a number of individuals said that they were unable to carry
29:36shopping bags a result of the accident however all the individuals were people that undertook physical
29:42hard manual labor jobs and took no time off work and were not placed on restricted duties
29:49as this evidence started to come into us the inconsistency started to show in one particular case
29:55the physio records for this claimant said one month after the accident he had no neck pain
29:59his medical report came into us a few months later alleging he still had severe neck pain
30:04all of them were inconsistent as to the nature and onset of their symptoms
30:10so far so fishy lb looked at the vehicles to establish if the damage was consistent with the whiplash injuries
30:19we instructed a forensic engineer who examined both vehicles and gave us his opinion that this could
30:26not have caused any injuries to the occupants and described the impact of being similar to that of a rocky
30:31motion
30:33the case went to court two of the original claimants dropped out another didn't pursue his case because
30:40of military service tricky with his injuries no doubt but that left 17 fighting for compensation
30:48over the course of six days 23 individuals gave evidence for the claims as to the injuries that they
30:54had sustained in order to make the claims seem more believable a lot of the claimants provided witness
31:00evidence from family members and friends in one particular case the claimant's ex-girlfriend
31:04contacted us just before the trial to make us aware that the claims were false she confirmed that the
31:10claimant was not injured in the accident at all and that she had been pressurized into providing a
31:16statement to support his claim he simply jumped on the bandwagon in respect of the other claims being
31:21brought she attended the trial and gave evidence to the judge of her views the judge found the evidence
31:27very compelling did believe her version of events at this point we now had some hard evidence to
31:32suggest that these individuals were not injured at all and were colluding together and it sounds like
31:39the claimants didn't really help their cases when they gave evidence one of the claimants was a
31:46plasterer the claim confirmed in cross-examination that he'd been able to undertake his usual activities
31:52at work which involved plastering walls and ceilings however when he was examined by his medical expert
31:58he was unable to lift his arms above his head another of the claimants managed to outdo that poor attempt
32:06one claimant alleged that he had sustained a neck and back injury in the accident and first noticed
32:11the onset of these symptoms the day after the accident however under cross-examination the claimants
32:17admitted that he first noticed that he had injuries in his neck whilst in the gym on monday morning
32:23the claimant confirmed that he was lifting in excess of 100 kilograms and that's when he first noticed
32:28his neck injuries it was put to the claim that perhaps his injuries were caused at the gym rather
32:33in the accident and the claimant conceded that that may well have been the case more brawn than brain
32:40perhaps the claimants were clearly unreliable witnesses at trial the amount of errors and the
32:46times that they kept tripping themselves up when giving evidence which went against their original
32:50statements was clear to see the judge decided having heard all the evidence these cases were
32:55fraudulent he gave a finding of fundamental dishonesty and dismissed all claims as a result of the
33:01judgment each individual claimant will have to pay the costs incurred by livable victoria in defending
33:07this claim those costs will run into hundreds of thousands of pounds with each claimant having to
33:12pay their fair portion of those costs the final furlongs a long way off for the rabble on the stag
33:19dude
33:19and their actions were totally time wasting this case also highlights the burden that the nhs are facing
33:25with people trying to validate their claims by the use of doctors and hospitals this time is better suited
33:31to treating ill patients not supporting protesters this stag party really should have waited until they got to
33:38the races before trying to back a long shot
33:51household debt is a growing reality in america it's nearly 19 trillion dollars staying in control of
33:59finances can be tricky and the next case reveals the staggering depths some sink to when facing money
34:06trouble the evening of november 3rd 2013 saw the peace in a neighborhood in cleveland ohio shattered
34:12by gunshots calls started coming in to alert the emergency services yeloma curry walker was cradling her
34:19husband firefighter lieutenant william walker in her arms we have unfortunately lost one of our past
34:25masters past master william walker william and yeloma had been living on the first floor of the block
34:32with yeloma's daughter and mother in the ground floor apartment but the couple was about to move
34:38somewhere more spacious and comfortable
34:42they'd married four months before it was a second marriage for both of them during police interviews
34:48after william's death yeloma spoke of him fondly well he was just a he was just a a great person
34:55unbelievable
34:59i'm not gonna say he was perfect but he was my person yeah yeah and um but during this conversation
35:08with yeloma which occurred months after william's death police were still no closer to finding his killer
35:14and they appealed to his widow for help we've looked at a lot of things and you're probably not aware
35:21but after this happened to william they flooded that area they started arresting everybody they could
35:30nothing came with it though someone has to know right well that's what i'm kind of saying
35:38they they hammered that area they would harass anything nothing nobody not even an idea no rumors
35:49we couldn't find a person to say a bad thing about will
35:56do you know of any problems that he may have been keeping from you that may have surfaced since he's
36:06been on
36:19but the officers were starting to piece together patterns in phone calls and text messages
36:25from the night william died and they'd focused on chad padgett the boyfriend of yeloma's daughter
36:33i mean we've looked at a lot of things phone records are big um i'm not sure if you're aware
36:40that your
36:40daughter wasn't the only one using that phone yeah i don't even know if she would carry it with her
36:48i'll tell you the truth as much as we actively we see that we assume would be chad
36:54okay okay i don't know how well you know this young man no i don't know i mean i just
37:01know the
37:02other person our person so you don't know him okay it was clear from this line of questioning that chad
37:11was a person of interest in the investigation and the police assured yeloma that they would deliver
37:18we're going to do everything we can to get you i promise you i promise you you have my word
37:24we're
37:26going to do everything that needs to be done you can ask wherever you want to ask if that's what
37:33you
37:33want to do why when the time comes i'm not sure you're going to want to do that but if
37:40that's what
37:40you want to do you'll have that opportunity just give yourself a little bit of closure it's not going
37:49to bring them back but let you know who's responsible is paying the price for what they did
38:01i've been with that girl for six years
38:06and then came a shocking revelation about our grieving widow i met her mom a bunch of times
38:12she seemed pretty cool one day dropped off at work picked her up she asked me a question
38:26she asked me i want to make like ten thousand dollars she asked me to kill bill i said i
38:42can't do it
38:42i might knock somebody
38:47chad said he couldn't but brought in his cousin chris hayne to get the gun
38:52and another man ryan doughty during his interview chris hayne the man who sourced the gun
38:58was clear about why yeloma wanted william out of the way
39:05william walker's life insurance policy was worth one hundred thousand dollars
39:10and according to chad yeloma needed money and fast
39:15you get numerous calls actually from places saying are you all this much and i'm like god
39:21dang like dude you're more in debt than anybody she'd been the one calling the shots but she
39:28wasn't anymore
39:31it was time to arrest the mastermind you have the right to remain silent anything you say
39:36can and will be used against you in court of law
39:48in court the jury took less than two hours to reach a verdict
39:54for his role as the middleman chris hayne received a sentence of 18 years chad paget was sentenced to 28
40:02years and ryan doughty the gunman 23 years on what would have been her fourth wedding anniversary
40:09yeloma curry walker who'd orchestrated the plan received a life sentence without parole
40:15she had hoped to benefit from her husband's life insurance and pension on his death
40:21but even if her cruel plan had worked she wouldn't have seen a scent
40:26william walker hadn't changed his details when he remarried his ex-wife was the beneficiary
40:41she was almost like she had a girl with her husband's life instructor he's been able to
40:47get out the interview with six to one of the staff her daughter was the one who said she was
40:52she was the one who said she was he was one of the best ones she was the one who
40:57said she was
40:58the one who said we're out of the city that he was a religious man who said that she was
