00:30three weeks ago. There he was in the Malia Rosa in Gemona del Friuli, a stage entirely in Friuli,
00:38Venezia Giulia. 200 kilometers this penultimate stage, 3,729 meters of elevation, and most of it
00:46made up through two passages of Piancavalo, climbing the second time to the finish line.
00:53Very poignant moment at the start as we remembered the 50th anniversary of the terrible 1976 earthquake
00:59in Friuli, which killed 900 people and left 3,000 or so injured as well.
01:07We had an early breakaway of five riders, Jonas Heens, Axel Huns, Jack Haig, Andreas Lechnesund
01:12again, and stage winner Guillermo Thomas Silva of Uruguay. Those five were being chased by
01:17these two, and it was a great chase too, Manueli Tarossi and Larry Warbass, and they did make
01:23it across, just in time for the Malia Ciclamino sprint as well.
01:30Incredible scenes today in another beautiful sunny Italian day too. It was Guillermo Thomas
01:36Silva of Uruguay winning the 12 points for the Malia Ciclamino sprint there. None of these
01:41riders were a threat, by the way, for general classification. Best placed of them was Jack Haig,
01:45the Australian who started the day just under two hours down on Jonas Vignogor.
01:54Good combination in the break though, and they built up a healthy lead as well. High point
01:58about five minutes, 40 seconds. They then went over the Clausetto climb, the third category
02:03climb where Andreas Lechnesund led.
02:07And on the descent, nasty crash actually, for his own teammate, Frederic de Vashnes, stage
02:14winner of course in this race, going off over the barrier and looking like he had a bit
02:17of a thumb issue too. We wish him well.
02:20They pressed on, intense heat, of course a Saturday, massive crowds out in Friuli today
02:24to celebrate the penultimate day of this year at Italia.
02:29Tim Rex doing another brilliant job at the front for his Melissa bike. His team leader though,
02:34Jonas Vignogor, having the confidence on the Ascenti Fianca Vallo to slow right down,
02:38in fact stop and check on something on his front tyre. Seem to be okay.
02:43Calm as a cucumber in that Maliarosa, Jonas Vignogor today, looking ever the expected winner
02:50of this race. Well, going across the finish line the first time, as you can see, we'd had
02:56a split in our breakaway. And it was Arrieta who was behind. They came back together again
03:05though, and they came back together just in time for the Red Bull sprint as well.
03:10Igor Arrieta taking that ahead of Larry Warbass, and Ludovico Crescioli who'd ridden back into
03:16that breakaway too. Jack Haig was looking good, Larry Warbass was looking really good in this
03:20group of six, and Leknesen once again in the breakaway, as he seemed to be every day for
03:25the last two weeks. Could he get the stage win, the Norwegian champion?
03:31Ludovico Crescioli was kind of expected to be the last man to attack, and really the most
03:36important man to attack, it had to be said, was Jonas Vignogor. Ten kilometres to go, he
03:40took off. Felix Gall had a go at staying with him, as we've seen on every mountain top finish
03:44so far in this race, and they would catch the remnants of the breakaway. Felix Gall settling
03:50into his own rhythm, but gradually those seconds extending and extending as Jonas Vignogor ate
03:56his way up the near 15 kilometre ascent of Piancavalo for the second time. Former race leader,
04:03Afonso Eolaglio, the Portuguese rider, was having a tough time, but as we've seen so often
04:08in this race, he was pacing the climb well. It was David Piganzoli who was trying to see
04:12if he could get into that best young rider's jersey, and the battle between those two is
04:17becoming fascinating on the final climb. Out front, Jonas Vignogor in a class of his own,
04:22it has to be said. Already the gap, as you can see, they're up to 1.10. Tough day for
04:27time and arrangement. He had the deluxe deal of Egan Banal pacing him and encouraging him
04:32too on Piancavalo. There he was, and they caught up with Felix Gall as well. Derek G. West
04:38in there too, and Afonso Eolaglio was looking better and better. David Piganzoli had had a go
04:43at getting rid of him, but then he did the job on Piganzoli too. This man, though, had done the
04:48job
04:49on the whole field. Five stage wins for Jonas Vignogor, something he's never done before,
04:54and he is rounding in on something that even Tari Pagaccia has never done before, which should
04:59happen tomorrow, barring accident or incident, and that is winning the third of all three grand tours.
05:06He has been an incredible dominant force in this race, Jonas Vignogor, and a very worthy
05:11winner. No real change in the top ten either on general classification, even after such a
05:16hard day. There it was, as it had been at the start. Just an even bigger lead for this
05:22man, Jonas Vignogor. Paul Manier, now without Jonathan Navas to cause him problems in the
05:27Ciclamino competition. He should bring that one home tomorrow on the final stage too. Jonathan
05:34Ciccone sealed the King of the Mountains competition to win the Malia Azura. Look
05:39out for the blue touches as he races into Roma tomorrow.
