00:05Hello and welcome to highlights of the Friday stage, stage 7 of 9 in this year's 37th Giro d'Italia,
00:13women racing from Sorbolo Mezzani in Emilia-Romagna into Lombardia country and Salici Termi.
00:20A stunningly beautiful stage, again the weather good, and it should be a quieter day ahead of tomorrow's massive mountains
00:29clash.
00:32Would it be a sprint though? Would a breakaway survive? Or somehow would it turn into a general classification showdown?
00:40Well, we're about to find out.
00:42As always, getting in the breakaway on a day like this is the fair, particularly of the Continental team riders.
00:48And we had, well, three different groups all trying to get in the breakaway today.
00:53Five riders managed to make their break stick. Here they were, Chantal Pegolo of Isomat Premac Vittoria,
00:59Marilyn Vantagelov of Laboral Kutcher, Alison Jackson again, the Canadian champion for Saint-Michel Preference Home Uber 93, and Sarah
01:09Lucon.
01:09Then this happened, big crash and taking down the race leader as well, Anna van der Bregg.
01:15And there she is in the Malia Rosa on the deck and getting pushed back in.
01:20Teammates around her to help her too, but a big danger moment for the race leader, Anna van der Bregg,
01:26who has had everything go her way so far in this race after winning the time trial to Nevegal.
01:32Well, Lidl Trek were pacing, but they were probably thinking more about an expected potential sprint finish for Elisa Balsamo.
01:40Anna van der Bregg was moving well. Less, more problems though, unfortunately, for Marlon Rosa,
01:45who was also involved in that crash and struggling to, by the looks of it, untangle her radio from her
01:51helmet strapped to it.
01:52I don't know whether she'd had a helmet replacement.
01:53Quite possible in the carnage that ensued after that and the big, big chase to get back in touch.
01:59The five out front were still with a healthy lead.
02:02One minute 20 with 34k to go.
02:04And they were approaching the first and the only intermediate sprint point of the day in Zava Tarello.
02:11And here it was.
02:12It was Sarah Lucon of Top Girls Fasa Bortolo, just ahead of Alison Jackson and Gaia Segato as well,
02:19taking the two seconds.
02:21None of the seconds in there mattered too much for the general classification.
02:23Marlon Franta-Chalouf was battling to try and stay with them.
02:34So another crash in an unexpected place as the riders get more and more fatigued
02:39as we approach this weak end of the conclusion of this year's 37th Giro d'Italia women.
02:45Marlon Franta-Chalouf was just being reeled in by the peloton.
02:50And it was looking all the while like the breakaway was coming back too.
02:54Sarah Lucon, after a good day out in the break, left three riders up the road.
02:58Sarah Segato, Chantel Peguelo and Alison Jackson.
03:02And they went to the top of that Queen of the Mountains point in Pietra Gavina together.
03:08Segato taking the points up there.
03:10This was the peloton coming through just 32 seconds down too.
03:14And it was looking very much like the reeling in of the breakaway was going to happen.
03:19However, there were a small number of riders who had other thoughts.
03:22And you can see them right here.
03:24Lucinda Brand had jumped across the gap.
03:26As had as well.
03:27Alison Jackson.
03:28Elisa Longo-Borgini trying to get time back on general classification.
03:32No obvious panic though from the teams behind.
03:36Don't forget Elisa Longo-Borgini has won the last two editions of this race.
03:43And this was her move today to try and get some time back.
03:46It was never a massive gap.
03:47As you can see with 3k to go.
03:4920 seconds of lead for the leading nine riders as it was then going to the finish.
03:54Elisa Longo-Borgini, the Italian champion on the front driving.
03:58And of course the breakaway riders knowing this was their golden ticket to get to the finish in front of
04:03these riders.
04:03We could see the Malia Rosa back there of Elisa Balsamo looking at potential of another stage win.
04:10But up the road, her own lead-out rider, Lucinda Brand, was opening up.
04:14We've seen Brand do this for Balsamo on at least two occasions so far.
04:17But coming off her wheel, Celia Geri, the young French sensation, breaking clear off the wheel of Lucinda Brand.
04:24And the 20-year-old Celia Geri getting her stage win.
04:28And look how close the peloton were behind.
04:32Wow.
04:34Celia Geri getting a massive win on stage seven of this Giro d'Italia women.
04:40And she was delighted by it.
04:42After all that, no change on the general classification.
04:46And Anna van der Breggen, after her crash being down on the road, goes into tomorrow's big mountains queen stage.
04:52Knowing she's still in control.
04:55Elisa Balsamo didn't get to sprint today.
04:57But she will also live to fight another day this weekend.
05:00And Anna van der Breggen, of course, the best climber in the race.
05:03Who will be the best climber after tomorrow's finish?
05:07It's going to be a big day tomorrow.
05:08Make sure you join us.
05:11We'll see you next time.
05:23We'll be right back.
