00:00Ok
00:40In regards to the recent inquiries and media reporting on the freedom of the press, as I previously stated, police
00:48independence and freedom of the press are both fundamental pillars that coexist in our democracy.
00:54I strongly believe in these two pillars and this is the approach I intend to make.
01:05The Australian people want to see balance in the way we get on with the job.
01:11Now, press freedom is important. There is no question about that. Absolutely no question about that.
01:17And I have been very strong on the importance of freedom of speech throughout my parliamentary career.
01:23But there are national security considerations that need to be taken into account in the way we consider this.
01:30And all countries across Western countries, developed countries across the world, realise that striking that balance is a very, very
01:37important part of government.
01:41Nobody here is saying that anyone should be above the law. The question is, does the law serve the public
01:47interest?
01:48And if government operates on the basis of a culture which is keep things secret because we don't want it
01:53being discussed, then I think we as people, we as taxpayers, we as effectively owners of the government, lose out
02:00because we don't have the information on which to make informed decisions.
