00:00I said it's not fine. I'm weighing all the time. I need to see a medical man or lady
00:32Hello Adam, nice to meet you. How's things?
00:35Oh good, thank you. How are you?
00:36Yeah, good. They said you were good looking and I'm now...
00:39Oh, I don't know about that.
00:40I'm really taken by how good looking you are.
00:44That wasn't how I was being described.
00:45That's a weird start to the day, but yeah, we'll go from there.
00:51Thank you for letting me come with you today.
00:52No, thank you.
00:53You're training today?
00:54Yes.
00:55In Sheffield?
00:55Yes, I am, yeah.
00:56Shall we go and do it?
00:57Let's go.
00:58How have you been? All right?
00:59All good.
01:00Yeah, it's been a crazy week.
01:02What?
01:03Yeah, well, just moving house.
01:05You're moving house? Where are you moving to?
01:07London.
01:08Oh, are you?
01:08Yeah.
01:09That's really exciting.
01:10Very exciting.
01:14That's awful moving, isn't it?
01:16Yeah, but at the same time, I'm like a very optimistic person.
01:20Oh God.
01:21I know, but not one of those like, oh, everything's great.
01:23Oh, good.
01:24I'm very realistic with that.
01:25It's going to be great because the Los Angeles Olympics, two years away.
01:29So for me, it's also a strategic move to really kind of get the best training that I can.
01:35Right.
01:36With a new coach and just be able to commit myself.
01:41It's quite funny, actually, because this is relatively a late morning for me, and I spent about eight years of
01:47my life getting up about 3.45, 4 a.m. to start training.
01:51But then I knew I always wanted to be an Olympian.
01:54I knew I wanted to be an Olympian.
01:55What age is this?
01:56All the way from 14 onwards.
01:59What?
02:00I know, it's ridiculous, isn't it?
02:01I think this is us.
02:02We're going on?
02:03Yeah.
02:04How much did you fall asleep at school?
02:06Quite a lot.
02:07Quite a lot.
02:11Oh, right.
02:18Can I break it down?
02:19We're going to training today.
02:21What is a, basically, what's a day, what's a week, what's a month, what's a year?
02:25So a day would be, if it was a double, so today's a single.
02:29A double, what?
02:30Sorry, yeah.
02:31It's okay.
02:31This is the level where.
02:33The guy's an idiot.
02:34The guy's an idiot.
02:35No, no, no.
02:36So just one swim.
02:38A bit lazy, isn't it?
02:39Yeah, very lazy, mate, very lazy.
02:41Cheers.
02:42Thanks for that.
02:43Confidence not.
02:44So, because I raced last week as well, this week's very easy in terms of training load.
02:49So it'd be a 4K, 5K swim.
02:51I did a 1K swim the other day, and I didn't do much for about a week and a half
02:55after.
02:57But I have been doing it 20 plus years.
02:59How long does that take?
03:004K, it'd take about an hour.
03:02I did a K in 45 minutes.
03:05That's good.
03:06Is that all right?
03:07Yeah.
03:07Hey, shave the beard.
03:08That might be 30 minutes.
03:11But it happens to be really fit.
03:14Yeah.
03:16And on a weekly one, we have 8 swims, 2 gyms.
03:19And then a monthly basis, we'll have 3 weeks on, 1 week off.
03:23You do nothing?
03:25No, no, no, no, no.
03:26We'll still do 7 or 8 sessions.
03:28I'm quite excited for you.
03:30Watch the telly.
03:31And then on a yearly basis, again, it's ebbs and flows of where that is.
03:36So do you build up to something?
03:38Yeah, so I've just come off a rest.
03:39So now we'll be coming back up.
03:41So on Monday, I've got an absolutely abysmal set I've got to do.
03:45And you're definitely not going to put a sickie.
03:47No, definitely not.
03:48Yeah, put the call in.
03:49But it's...
03:50So what is that session?
03:51It's a test for fitness, basically.
03:53There may be areas where I'm like, this could be a lot better.
03:56Are you in a good place, basically?
03:58Very good place, yeah.
03:59I've always said that the mind is the athlete, the body is simply the means.
04:03Right.
04:04Everything has to come from here, you know?
04:05And making those decisions in the right time, in the right place.
04:11I've got a little drink in my bag for you.
04:14A what?
04:15A little drink.
04:16A drink?
04:19So, after the race, we need a lot of carbs.
04:22And we also need quite a lot of protein.
04:27I don't think I can beef up any more, to be honest here.
04:29Pretty beefy.
04:31So this is what I'd be drinking if I'd won the Olympic gold medal?
04:35Well, whatever you do.
04:36I think I've just won the gold medal.
04:38I've absolutely...
04:39I've smashed you by quite a way.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Not with that shaking.
04:45For me, the train is crucial, because it allows me to decompress.
04:50Because, you know, training takes up a lot of my life.
04:52Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:52I use it exactly the same.
04:54I always have something I want to do, and then I'm very much...
04:59staring out the window.
05:00Yeah.
05:00I always think I'll probably write a novel...
05:03Yeah.
05:04...in the two hours I go home.
05:05But I just, yeah, I find it's my time, basically.
05:10Hmm.
05:13That's bearable.
05:23It's interesting what you're saying about, like, finding what you want to do.
05:26I think if you know what you want to do, that's a real gift.
05:31I knew I didn't want to do anything in school, really.
05:33I was always a physical person.
05:36If it wasn't going to be in the Olympics, I gave myself two years after GCSEs to make sure it
05:42worked out, and I was going to just join the Army or the Marines.
05:45I always thought I was lazy, but I was hardworking when I loved something.
05:51I wanted to be successful more than anything.
05:53Yeah.
05:53I think sport is an incredible thing for a lot of young people to really find who they truly are,
05:59and it's you versus you.
06:01You said earlier to me that you're looking at Los Angeles Olympics in two years' time.
06:06So is that the focus?
06:07Is, like, you're not seeing past Los Angeles?
06:10I can't think of the LA every single day.
06:12Right.
06:13I can still have it on the horizon.
06:15So you're not looking that far ahead.
06:17You're going, what do I have to do now?
06:19Pretty much.
06:23I watched some clips this morning of yourself in races.
06:27When you came out for the race, you had a different energy and almost looked different.
06:34Different aura.
06:36Yeah.
06:36Was that you getting into a place, or was that also kind of for them to see what they're up
06:43against?
06:44A bit of both.
06:45The body has a direct correlation to the mind and vice versa.
06:48So if I walk out with my head down or I'm, like, just, like, slouched over, you're automatically signaling to
06:53your brain that you don't want to be there.
06:55Whereas if you just change your posture, like, just do it now, just, like...
07:00My shoulder's so perfectly hunched, there'd be a cracking noise.
07:03But if you do that and just even breathe and lift your chin up...
07:09Still feel a bit of a wall, eh?
07:11Don't look too tense.
07:12But, like, for me, that gives me relaxation because it's confidence.
07:15Yeah, right.
07:15Like, even now, that's giving me, like, a little bit of adrenaline just by doing that.
07:19Yeah.
07:19It's weird.
07:20Is it almost like a character?
07:21You're kind of changing into a character, yeah?
07:24I guess so.
07:30I just want to know everything about, like, the sort of logistics of being at the Olympics.
07:36You qualify how long before?
07:38A few months, so 12 weeks.
07:40When did you get your kit?
07:42Probably about four weeks ago.
07:44How incredible was it putting on for the first time with the...
07:47Unbelievable.
07:48I mean, I look at Union Jack and I'm like, yeah, we've made it nearly.
07:51That's the start of the dream, surely.
07:53Yeah.
07:53Yeah.
07:54That was a big inspiration moment for me.
07:56Olympic Village.
07:57I think it's, like, I imagine, like, a hall of residence, but posher.
08:02Not posher.
08:03No.
08:03Probably the opposite.
08:04The bed's a cardboard.
08:05That is true.
08:06It's not plush at all.
08:08Well, it should be plush.
08:09It should be plush, yeah.
08:10What's the day like of a final?
08:11Is it...
08:12How do you keep not shaking?
08:13So you'll go for a swim in the morning, like, 800 metres, like, very, very small.
08:18And then it'll just be doing things that you normally do.
08:21So you try and keep it as normal as possible?
08:23As normal as possible.
08:24And just, it's actually a luxury to be able to sit down and watch TV or just not be busy.
08:29God, it's making me panicky, thinking about it.
08:32Like, I can't imagine just...
08:34And you've got...
08:36Aren't you going, oh, my God, in four hours?
08:38Yeah.
08:39I've got to put my swimming hat on.
08:42But for me, yeah, I mean, that's, again, a moment of a test for the mentality of, can you do
08:49this?
08:49Can you convert the stress that does get through into something that is going to be productive?
08:53And just being able to distract yourself for as much as possible as well.
08:56Anything but swimming?
08:57Yeah, gaming, whatever it is.
09:00Just get away from it.
09:01What about the moment you hit the water in the final?
09:04What's your head doing there?
09:05Well, you're on the blocks and it's silent.
09:08And as soon as that gun goes, you hear a massive cheer for about 0.5 of a second.
09:13Then you dive in.
09:15And then you go to process of what you've trained for, basically.
09:19Then the first three strokes are crucial.
09:22So if you are too aggressive on those first three strokes, you're going to waste energy.
09:27And your last 10 meters isn't going to be good because you've not trained for that segment.
09:32Get to the wall.
09:33That's when I can have a tiny bit of an awareness of how well I'm doing.
09:37And then the last 25 meters is a dogfight, pretty much.
09:42Wow.
09:43So.
09:43And then you hit the wall.
09:45Then you find out.
09:47And hopefully it's a good day.
09:49And using 2016, what was that feeling?
09:53I just can't even describe it.
09:54I was like, I've done it.
09:55I can just happily say now that I've achieved what I wanted to do.
10:01That's incredible.
10:02And that's at 21 years old.
10:04So then you have to rewrite what success looks like after that.
10:08Of course.
10:10Sean Locke, who is a good friend of mine, passed away a few years ago.
10:14But we met Greg Rutherford.
10:16Yes.
10:17We thanked him for all the sort of joy of watching him kind of compete and how much it sort
10:23of did for us.
10:24Set in 2012.
10:26And it's such a thrill every four years.
10:29I've never thought of it that way.
10:31All that hard work and the joy we get from watching the competition is just immense.
10:38It's still the most amazing event on the planet, isn't it?
10:42Yeah, absolutely.
10:43And I think Barua's experiencing that.
10:45We're in kind of a bit of a bubble.
10:47We had this video, basically, that was sent to me from my coach.
10:51And then everyone back home, there's hundreds of people in that room.
10:55And it was watching me race and seeing the joy of those people in the room.
10:59I think also the Olympics is a great message of that people can go through some extremely hard times.
11:05And sport in general can be a little bit of a, actually, you have got hope.
11:11You just need to find a way.
11:12There's always a way out of a dark situation.
11:22I'm bringing back the autograph book.
11:24Okay.
11:25May I get your autograph?
11:27Absolutely.
11:32Thank you very much.
11:33There we are.
11:34May I read it now?
11:35Yeah, absolutely.
11:36Thank you so much.
11:38That's very kind.
11:39It's been an absolute honor.
11:40Yeah.
11:40And, yeah, as I keep saying, I think what you've done is spectacular.
11:45For sports, I think that, even now, I would have loved to have had that little, that ability to be
11:55able to harness.
11:55Because I think I love it so much, and then there's a point as a youngster you realise, you know,
12:03and you kind of go, and then you drift into being a fan.
12:08I'm a good fan.
12:09I'm one of the best fans out there, I think.
12:13I think you should have a purpose and just challenge yourself to do something in sport.
12:17How old are you now, sorry?
12:1851.
12:1951.
12:20Put the wind out yourselves a little bit.
12:23Good to do an Ironman.
12:24What?
12:25Do an Ironman.
12:26Do an Ironman.
12:27Half Ironman.
12:28Well, look, me and my friend are doing a 100k run walk.
12:35Oh, wow.
12:35Hopefully at the end of this year.
12:37I got a little confession, tried to do it last year without enough prep.
12:41Okay, yeah.
12:43And, yeah, I failed.
12:45How many k's did you get in?
12:47It's not important, is it?
12:49I don't worry about the who's and why's and what's.
12:52I had to go and see a medical man.
12:54Okay.
12:54And he kept saying to me, what was your nutrition plan?
12:59And I had to say to him, what do you mean by nutrition plan?
13:02Oh, no.
13:03And he said, you need to stop.
13:08I didn't know about things like electrolytes and carb loading and stuff like that.
13:15Yeah, crucial.
13:16And by sort of K36, I was weeing endlessly.
13:23Really?
13:24Just because water?
13:26I kept drinking water because I thought that would.
13:27And it's got no electrolytes.
13:29No, no.
13:29It was just coming out of me and that was panicking me.
13:33My friend kept going.
13:35My friend kept going, I'm sure it's fine.
13:37I said, it's not fine.
13:39I'm weeing all the time.
13:41I need to see a medical man or lady.
13:44And I went to see a medical man and he said, what is your nutrition plan?
13:47And I said, why do you keep saying nutrition plan?
13:53So I'm redoing it, hopefully, this year.
13:56So if you need a new trainer or anything.
13:58Yeah.
13:59Wow.
13:59If this new one doesn't work out.
14:00Draft you in.
14:01Draft you in.
14:01Pretty much, I'm a motivational guy.
14:03Yeah.
14:04Yeah.
14:05We are actually coming into the shift for a bit.
14:08Shall we get your tea?
14:12Right, have you got everything?
14:13Look at your bits and bobs.
14:21Well, thank you ever so much.
14:23Yeah.
14:23Real pleasure to meet you.
14:24Yes, I enjoyed it.
14:25Yeah, of course.
14:26Thank you, man.
14:27Thank you for letting me spend the morning with you.
14:29Cheers.
14:30That was great.
14:30Well, enjoy your session.
14:33Yeah, well, let's go.
14:35Bye, mate.
14:36Thanks ever so much.
14:36Look after yourself.
14:38Wow.
14:40He's an Olympian.
14:44Sheffield's very quiet, isn't it?
14:47Nobody here.
14:49Did we solve that?
14:52Actually, I've got to get home.
14:55I live miles away.
15:09I came into a private life.
15:14You're listening to me now.
15:17We'll see you soon.
15:17We'll see you soon.
