Nessa Barrett brings soothing energy and gothic glamour to this episode of Hush & Brush. While creating her signature smokey eye makeup look, the singer-songwriter reveals why beauty has become a calming ritual in her daily routine. Her soft-spoken ASMR makeup tutorial blends beauty, relaxation, and behind-the-scenes insight into her creative world.

Starting by carefully sharpening one of her favorite eyeliner pencils, Nessa explains that her smokey eye routine is never exactly the same twice. Instead, she builds the look intuitively, feeling it out as she goes. The dramatic eye makeup was key to the intimate release shows surrounding her new EP, ‘Jesus Loves a Primadonna,’ where she leaned into a dark, gothic, and witchy vibe that she says is “so me.”

00:03Thus I give you the tingles.
00:10Hi everyone, my name is Nessa Barrett and today I'm going to be showing you my signature black eyeliner smokey
00:19eye.
00:19Let's get into it.
00:21This is my makeup pouch.
00:25I don't know if it sounds good.
00:30I usually use this like huge black box that I put all my makeup in but since I'm only showing
00:38you my eyeliner look.
00:40I put everything in this soft pouch because I thought it might be ASMR but I don't know.
00:51I'm really bad at doing my makeup on camera so hopefully I don't mess this up.
00:54The first product I'm using is the Charlotte Tilbury Rockin' Coal eyeliner.
01:00Oh, feels very fitting.
01:03Was that good?
01:04Thus I give you the tingles.
01:07This one also has a side where you can like smudge it which is kind of cool.
01:15I also use another eyeliner.
01:18Two different eyeliners for this look.
01:20It's the NYX Eye Pencil.
01:22It's really good too.
01:23But I use this one for my actual lid.
01:27I use this compact mirror everywhere I go.
01:31It has Vampyra on it.
01:33I love her but I'm super blind and so I need to see everything super close and so this comes
01:41in handy.
01:43I am really bad at using my contacts because I'm really scared that they might get stuck in my eye.
01:50Which is a big fear of mine so I wear glasses.
01:54I might have to sharpen this.
02:03Can you hear that?
02:04The trick of this is to be super messy.
02:07I'm not perfect and I think that's the whole point of this.
02:13I kind of just draw a line on top of my eyelid and hope for the best.
02:19I never really got into makeup I think only until like a few years ago.
02:26When I was a kid I used to do my Mimi's makeup for fun.
02:31She also used to wear black eyeliner and so I think that's when I first started to play around with
02:36it.
02:37But now I do my makeup myself for all of my shows and my music videos and so I think
02:44I've gotten a little better at it over the years.
02:47I actually just finished a few intimate shows that I did in celebration of my EP release Jesus Love Supreme
02:56Madonna.
02:57It was really fun.
02:58The whole vibe was super gothic and witchy and so I really wanted my makeup to be that way too.
03:06But getting ready I kind of just sit backstage, do my makeup and me and my band sing a few
03:12songs.
03:13It's very chill.
03:15I actually didn't really have any inspo behind my album name.
03:19It was just a lyric that I wrote in a song of my West Coast prayer and I thought it
03:24sounded cool.
03:25Now that my eyeliner is on pretty messily, I go in with this makeup by Mario palette and use the
03:37black eyeshadow and I smudge it out a lot.
03:43Is that too loud?
03:45Oh, it's kind of magnetic so it's like hard.
03:55I find a lot of new makeup from my friends because they're all really good at doing their makeup and
04:01so I really trust their judgment.
04:04I don't know where I found this palette for the first time but thank god I did.
04:09It saved my life.
04:11I'm going in with this black one.
04:17I do this eye look every single show.
04:20Which is kind of funny because you'd think that I'd be better at it by now but every time I
04:25do it it looks different.
04:26So I guess that's kind of the beauty behind makeup.
04:29I think for me personally, I really only ever do my makeup if I'm playing a show or going out
04:37with my friends.
04:39So on a normal day, I don't really do my makeup which is kind of nice because it's like a
04:47special treat for me when I get to wear it.
04:50Because I do find the act of doing makeup really relaxing.
04:56I really love to meditate and I think that doing makeup sometimes makes me feel like I'm doing my own
05:05form of meditation.
05:07I do love a good affirmation. Those are really nice.
05:11But I also love meditation frequencies.
05:16444 hertz is really nice.
05:19888.
05:21There's so many really good ones that I just get on YouTube.
05:27I love listening to music when I get ready.
05:31Also, if I'm reading a good book, sometimes I'll throw on the audio version of it so I can listen
05:36to it while I'm getting ready.
05:39Now what I do is I go back in with my eyeliner and add a little bit more.
05:48I don't really know how to explain my process.
05:51I kind of just look and do what feels good.
05:54So...
05:58A few songs on my Get Ready With Me playlist.
06:02Paradise Circus from Massive Attack.
06:06Maybe Glory Box by Portishead.
06:09Anything by Lana Del Rey.
06:12Maybe a few Nessa Parrot songs.
06:19Picking a favorite Lana Del Rey song is nearly impossible.
06:22Probably right now.
06:25A and W.
06:27Does this sound?
06:28Can you hear that?
06:34Does that sound good?
06:42I'm drawing X's on the mic.
06:44That's kind of a thing that I do.
06:48Every time I text something, I always had a nice X for a kiss.
06:54I think my song, Venom, off of my new EP would sound so good in ASMR.
07:04It's already kind of moody and gentle and sensual and dark.
07:11Which, when I listen to it, I feel all the feels, so I think that one would be a good
07:16ASMR one.
07:17My favorite lyric from my song, Venom.
07:19I like my roses dying.
07:21And I watch as my heart turns black.
07:25So me.
07:27Now it's time for the scariest part.
07:30Which is putting the eyeliner in my actual eyes.
07:35Right for me.
07:36This one is the NYX Eye Pencil.
07:38I really like this one for inside my eyes because it's really dark and it stays dark.
07:44Sometimes it's really hard to get, like, the inside of your eyes super black.
07:51And then this one does the job, so.
07:54I take a Q-tip and I dry out my water line because I'm also a crier in my eyes
07:59water all the time.
08:01So, it's very important.
08:02This step, which is actually a really hard way of doing it.
08:05I may need to, like, maneuver some things around.
08:13Okay.
08:15Cool.
08:17Recording and writing my EP was really fun.
08:24I work with amazing people and we feel like family.
08:32Oh my god, I actually didn't realize how hard this would be on camera.
08:40This EP is really different from my past music because, I don't know, I just feel super connected to it.
08:47It really embodies everything I love, which is all things dark and this tragic romance.
08:56And yeah, it's all my favorite music I've ever made.
08:59I think this project definitely is something in between transitional period for all things to come, but kind of the
09:08beginning of this new world that I'm trying to build.
09:12Okay. Not too bad.
09:15If my makeup routine could talk, it would probably say I might be a little indecisive.
09:23I don't know. I never really know what I want to do.
09:26Actually, that's kind of a lie. I'm totally lying right now.
09:30I did probably say that I'm boring because I always stick to the same thing.
09:34I think that's kind of my smokey eye.
09:37But I do have some fun ASMR props to play with.
09:41So I'm going to try my best to bring those out and give you some tangles.
09:46I actually watch ASMR all the time, so...
09:49My favorite type of ASMR is when people do my makeup for me or I get a haircut.
09:58I love the small ones.
10:10That feels really nice, actually.
10:23Okay.
10:24Okay, it's really high.
10:27That might be too much, okay?
10:29How's that?
10:30If I was stranded on a deserted island, I feel like I would have to bring any sort of lip
10:41product, lip liner, lipstick.
10:44I feel like lipstick is what really makes a makeup look.
10:49This is my go-to lip color.
10:53It's the NARS lip crayon in the shade Bohemian Rhapsody.
11:00If you can't tell, I use it quite a lot because it's, yeah, almost shaped down to nothing.
11:07I'm just a matte curly. I don't really wear gloss ever.
11:12I don't know why that is.
11:13I think, personally on me, I like a more matte look.
11:17Something younger me wouldn't believe that I'm doing now has to be just singing on a stage.
11:26I think that's really crazy.
11:29I've always wanted to be a singer growing up, but I always thought that I'd be too scared to sing
11:35in front of a crowd.
11:37And so, I think she'd be really stoked that I'm touring.
11:41My first ever show that I've ever done, I was so scared.
11:49So scared.
11:50But it was great.
11:52And the fear never really goes away.
11:54I still get scared to this day, but it's kind of what makes it a little exciting.
12:00Something I tell myself before I go on stage is just have fun.
12:05I love music and it's super cool that I get to sing my songs with my fans.
12:13And so I like to remind myself that that's the most important part.
12:17I have no idea what the hell these are.
12:20They seem really cool.
12:22Lavender scented lotion first.
12:32These things are always so hard to open.
12:39Oh my god.
12:46Honestly, this feels super weird.
12:50I don't even know why I would describe this.
12:52I'm like really regretting my decision.
12:54Does it sound good at least?
12:58Maybe a little weird.
13:02It feels weird.
13:08Can you hear that?
13:13If I could whisper one thing to my younger self, I think I would whisper,
13:21I love you.
13:24Huh?
13:24That was so weird.
13:26I'm gonna play with some brushes now.
13:28Maybe if you're watching this, close your eyes and pretend I'm doing your makeup.
13:41I wish I could hear it.
13:43I wish I could hear it.
13:45Okay.
14:12One piece of makeup advice that I would give is to just do what feels good to you.
14:22And to wear whatever makes you feel confident.
14:25You don't need to do what everyone else is doing or follow any sort of makeup tutorial.
14:31I think just have fun and create something that makes you feel good.
14:39Okay, everyone, thank you so much for watching me do my smokey eye.
14:46I hope you enjoyed.
14:49Make sure to listen to my new EP, Jesus Loves a Prima Donna.
14:55I love you.
14:56Bye.
