00:00I placed my hand into a pond of snakes.
00:04Their bodies shifted beneath the water as they coiled my hand.
00:08A sharp pain tore through my arm, but I stayed still.
00:13Only a handful of students ever volunteered for this trial.
00:17When the snakes withdraw, the water reveals your beast power.
00:23But some never leave the pond alive.
00:27This time, the snakes withdrew and water stilled as everyone waited for the reveal.
00:32But instead of showing my beast's power, the water thickened until it turned black like a void.
00:39Is he cursed?
00:41I looked at my master as his face was drained of color.
00:44In 300 years, I've only seen this once.
00:48Either you're the greatest tamer we've been waiting for, or the weakest beast tamer alive.
00:56Wren's only fate is to remain poor and brainless.
01:02They laughed.
01:04Maybe they were right to mock me because where I come from, your beast egg decides your place.
01:17The other children had large eggs that were vibrant hues of red or blue or green, each pulsing with energy.
01:25Those had the highest chance of hatching an elite beast and giving their owners lives of comfort and privilege.
01:33My egg was nothing like theirs.
01:35It was gray and small, like it had gone past its expiration date.
01:40It was the cheapest egg available, and my family sold everything we owned to afford it.
01:46The beasts that hatched before mine drew gasps.
01:50Luna Starweaver hatched a shadow wolf.
01:53Her beasts' powers gave her enhanced senses, made her taller, faster, and stronger.
02:00Klein Goldcrest hatched a crimson salamander.
02:03It gave him regal scales of molten gold that glowed beneath his skin.
02:08All around me, students showed off their new forms.
02:11Wings, claws, armored limbs.
02:16Their families would be celebrating tonight.
02:19These beasts guaranteed them wealth and glory.
02:22That's all I wanted.
02:24To be able to reward my parents for giving up everything so I'd have a chance.
02:31Run!
02:32The examiner called my name.
02:34I felt all of their eyes fall on me.
02:36It was my turn.
02:40My hands shook as I walked up to the altar, clutching my egg.
02:44I put the egg down on the altar and took a step back.
02:48The room fell into a hush as it started to wiggle.
02:51The shells split.
02:53I could feel my heart beat faster as the shells split open.
02:57Brilliant light escaped from the cracks, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.
03:01When I opened mine, I saw the shattered egg.
03:05There was no beast inside.
03:14A cloud of spores floated over me.
03:16It had two eyes and glimmered with a dim gray light.
03:19It was the weakest beast ever recorded in the history of summonings.
03:25The laughter from my peers was cruel and immediate.
03:29My face went bright red with shame.
03:32I heard Klein's voice booming behind me.
03:35Of course you would get a cloud spore, Wren.
03:37You have the worst luck in the world.
03:43Was my life over?
03:45I refused to accept it.
03:49I ran to the ceremony master.
03:52A cloud spore isn't that bad, right?
03:54It will evolve into something big and strong.
03:57Right?
03:58The elder pressed his lips into a line, struggling to contain his amusement.
04:02I'm sorry, Wren, but you truly have the worst beast there is.
04:07It doesn't evolve, and its absurdly low rating will resign you to a life of poverty.
04:14Working in the mines with your worthless beast.
04:19At that moment, my cloud spore squinted and glowed.
04:22I felt something slowly protrude from my head.
04:26Hope surged inside of me.
04:27Was I growing badass horns?
04:30Klein jumped in my face and pointed.
04:32Look.
04:33He's growing a garden from his head.
04:36I panicked and ran to the nearest window to look at my reflection.
04:42It seemed my awakened form was complete.
04:45Klein was right.
04:46Dozens of glowing mushroom had sprouted on the top of my head.
04:50The other students surrounded me.
04:53Fungus freak!
04:54Fungus freak!
04:55I whipped my head toward the ceremony master.
04:57This is it?
04:58I don't get powers like the rest of the students.
05:02Klein can control fire.
05:04Luna can run faster than wolves.
05:06All I get are blinking mushrooms?
05:11The ceremony master sighed.
05:13I am afraid so.
05:15He turned to the rest of the students, trying to settle them down.
05:18Remember everyone, in one week you'll be going to the School of Cultivation and Evolution
05:22to begin your eight-year study in beast taming.
05:28But I couldn't focus with my classmates chanting
05:30Fungus freak!
05:32at me over and over again.
05:36Everything my family had worked for and risked was ruined.
05:39All thanks to my own bad luck.
05:41I wanted to hide from the world.
05:43I was a walking embarrassment.
05:45My family's living embodiment of shame.
05:48So I ran.
05:50I ran from the lavish buildings and cobblestone streets of the city
05:55to the dirt roads of the countryside where my family lived near the edge of a dangerous forest.
06:00The spore cloud chased behind me the entire time, now bound to my soul.
06:09Eventually, I saw my house.
06:11It was old and run down, in need of many repairs that we couldn't afford.
06:16But it was the best we could do.
06:18What could I possibly tell them about the ceremony?
06:21My life would be better if I had no beast at all.
06:25After a moment, I just sighed and moved toward the door.
06:30The second I stepped inside, a loud pop of confetti cracked through the room.
06:35Surprise!
06:37I jumped back in shock.
06:39Letters hung from the ceiling spelling out congratulations.
06:42The table was decorated with my favorite foods,
06:45and my parents stood close, smiling ear to ear.
06:49They had thrown me a surprise party.
06:52Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you.
06:57My mother got on her tippy toes, looking over my shoulder.
07:01Where's your beast, Wren?
07:02My father smiled.
07:04I know you hatched something powerful.
07:07Something that'll earn you a spot in the royal court.
07:13My spore cloud hovered into view beside me, glowing proudly.
07:17I could see the immediate shock on my parents' faces.
07:21They knew what this meant.
07:22That I had somehow hatched the worst beast in the world.
07:26That even though they sacrificed everything,
07:28our family would remain poor forever.
07:30My mom quickly wiped the shock from her face and smiled.
07:34Wren, we're so proud of you.
07:38The guilt hit hard and fast.
07:40I couldn't hold back anymore.
07:42Mom, Dad, I'm so sorry.
07:46It's my fault.
07:48I doomed our family.
07:51My mom ran to hug me.
07:53Oh, Wren.
07:54My father patted my back.
07:56Wren, no matter what happens, you're still our miracle child.
07:59I shook my head.
08:00I just made our lives worse.
08:02I'll never amount to anything.
08:04We'll be in debt forever.
08:05My mother gave me the warmest smile.
08:08Wren, don't give up hope.
08:09When I was sick and infertile many years ago, your father trekked out into the woods looking
08:16for a cure.
08:17She pointed through the window at the dark woods.
08:19He avoided deadly beasts.
08:22He nearly died from dehydration.
08:24He was about to give up.
08:26But right before he turned back, he found it.
08:30My father joined in, grinning as he recalled the memory.
08:34A tunnel so small I would have missed it.
08:36If not for those walls covered in glowing rooms.
08:39And in the center was a beautiful half flower.
08:43I cocked an eyebrow.
08:45A half flower?
08:46He nodded.
08:48Half of a flower.
08:50I had read about it in legend.
08:52They say that if you find it, you're blessed by the heaven.
08:55So I took it.
08:56I gave it to your mother.
08:58And you know what?
09:00She was cured of her illness.
09:02My mother brushed my hair.
09:04And most importantly, we gotta have you.
09:08So no matter what, Wren, we'll always love you.
09:10You will always be our little miracle.
09:13My eyes went wide.
09:15They'd given me an idea.
09:16But it was too dangerous to tell them about.
09:18Dad, I don't feel good right now.
09:20Can I go to my room?
09:22They both nodded.
09:23And I ran into my room.
09:24I plopped onto my rickety bed and stared out at the woods.
09:27Where the deadliest natural beasts lived.
09:30If I was going to pay my parents back, I'd need to tame another beast.
09:34Every person only had enough mana inside of them to sustain a connection with one beast.
09:39Unless I went into the forest and found a half-flower from the heavens, it was capable of creating miracles.
09:44It'd give me the ability to tame an additional beast naturally.
09:48All I needed to do was find it.
09:49I looked at my spore cloud, glowing softly beside me.
09:53I sighed.
09:54It's not your fault.
09:56But why did I have to hatch you?
09:59The spore cloud flashed, then scurried to my side.
10:02It pressed its face into my side, snuggling against me.
10:05All right, fine. I won't replace you with another beast.
10:09But I do need your help to get a second one.
10:12The spore cloud looked up at me, as if smiling in agreement.
10:16I let out a deep breath.
10:18The forest was terrifying.
10:23I'd never been allowed to enter those woods, but I'd have to now.
10:27Otherwise, I'd spend the next eight years of school getting bullied endlessly by people like Klein or worse.
10:33My parents would have to watch their hard-earned money go to waste.
10:38All for me to end up working in the mines for scraps anyway.
10:42I couldn't let that happen.
10:44I leapt out my window and dashed into the woods.
10:48The forest shimmered with living magic.
10:51Every leaf and vine pulsed with light.
10:55My spore cloud drifted close behind me, glowing softly in the dark.
10:59The deeper I trekked into the woods, the creepier it became.
11:03I avoided shadows of scary animals hunting for a meal, and I steered clear of all the man-eating plants.
11:09Then, I saw a light blinking up ahead.
11:12My heart swelled with hope.
11:14Could it be the same glowing tunnel where my father found the flower?
11:18By the time I realized I was supposed to look away, it was too late.
11:24A praying mantis the size of a human stared back at me.
11:29It had crystalline formations all across its body, bending light in a way to mesmerize its prey.
11:35I froze.
11:36A mirror mantis.
11:38The deadly beast stalked toward me.
11:41I'd studied books about beasts my entire life.
11:45One fact from the books blared in my mind like an alarm.
11:48Mirror mantises were the most deadly thing that I could possibly encounter in these woods.
11:53The mantis' jagged arms scraped across the ground toward me like two razor blades.
11:58My mind raced.
12:00It was too late to hide.
12:01But if I ran, it'd lunge and take my head clean off.
12:06Suddenly, I felt a surge of energy flow through me.
12:11Mushrooms plopped out the top of my head and began to glow in a random pattern.
12:15My spore cloud had activated my awakened state.
12:18I grimaced at the cloud.
12:20Are you serious?
12:22Now isn't the right time.
12:25Yet somehow, the mantis stopped in its tracks.
12:28It cocked its triangular head, completely mesmerized by the blinking mushrooms protruding from me.
12:34I was in disbelief.
12:36The mushrooms were emulating the same light pattern that the mantis used to entrance prey.
12:41I whispered,
12:42Good thinking, cloud.
12:44But this won't last forever.
12:46Any sudden movements and it comes charging at us.
12:48I scanned the area.
12:50Every possible source of cover was too far away.
12:54Come on.
12:55There has to be something.
12:57I took a slow step back, trying to put some distance between us.
13:00My heels sank with a hollow crunch.
13:03I froze.
13:05There was a pit right beneath me, built to snare bigger beasts.
13:09I was too light to trigger it, but a mirror mantis wouldn't be.
13:14Cloud, I'm going to do something risky.
13:17But you have to trust me, okay?
13:20The spore cloud looked at me, and its eyes surged with determination.
13:23We move on three.
13:26I took one step onto the hollow ground.
13:28One.
13:30Then took another step backward.
13:32Two.
13:33I broke out into a dash.
13:35Three.
13:36The second I darted, the mirror mantis hissed.
13:40It stabbed its legs into the ground, dragging its way toward me.
13:44My adrenaline flooded.
13:45And in that split second, I dove.
13:48As the mirror mantis grazed my foot, it stepped forward, opening up the pit below.
13:54The ground opened up with a crash, and the mantis shrieked as it fell into the chasm.
13:59Relief flooded through me in an instant.
14:01I grinned.
14:03I did it.
14:04I survived.
14:07Cloudwee.
14:07I felt something latch around my leg.
14:09The mantis hooked its pincer around my leg.
14:12My joy turned to pure terror.
14:14I dropped to the ground and tried to kick the beast off of me.
14:17It clung to me as I fell into the pit, trying to drag me with it.
14:21I clawed at the dirt, desperately trying to hang on.
14:24But it was no use.
14:26I lost my grip and went plunging into the dark depths below.
14:29I hit the ground with a crunch.
14:31I groaned in pain.
14:33When I realized I was still alive, I got to my feet and felt around in the pitch black darkness.
14:39I grabbed onto the walls, feeling around for an exit.
14:43A light suddenly blinked beside me.
14:45I stopped.
14:46Was it the mantis' light?
14:47The light blinked again, revealing the cheery face of my spore cloud.
14:51I whispered,
14:52You idiot!
14:54What are you doing here?
14:56Are you trying to get eaten?
14:58Before the cloud could even respond, I heard a chittering sound that sent a chill down my spine.
15:03I turned slowly.
15:05Behind me was the mirror mantis, dimly illuminated by my spore cloud.
15:09I took a step back.
15:11It took a step forward.
15:14Mirror mantises love to play with their food.
15:16And right now, it was enjoying every ounce of fear emanating from my pores.
15:22My back hit a wall.
15:23I was cornered.
15:24The spore cloud flashed with light, trying to distract the mantis.
15:28It was no use.
15:30The beast just raised its pincer into the air, ready to make me its next meal.
15:34I spoke out loud, apologizing to my parents, hoping through some divine intervention they would hear me.
15:41I'm sorry you had a disappointment like me.
15:45Maybe your lives will be better without me.
15:47Suddenly, I felt my heart swell with my parents' spirit and determination.
15:52My eyes locked onto the pincer.
15:54I wasn't going to go without a fight.
15:57I screamed at the creature.
15:58Come on, you ugly bug!
16:00Finish it already!
16:01The mantis screeched and reared back its blade.
16:05The wall suddenly exploded in a plume of dirt and smoke.
16:08The mantis rolled across the floor, clearly injured by the blow.
16:11I blinked.
16:12What just happened?
16:13As the dust settled, a huge silhouette appeared from the newly formed hole in the wall.
16:19It was a bear-like creature known as a night excavator.
16:22It had pure white eyes that adjusted to the darkness.
16:25Massive, arced talons, made to scoop out large piles of dirt.
16:29It was what created the pitfall trap in the first place.
16:32I gulped, remembering another fact from my books.
16:35If mirror mantises were the most deadly beasts on the surface,
16:39then the night excavators were the most deadly beasts underground.
16:42The night excavator scanned the area, sniffing for its next meal.
16:46If it caught sight of me, I'd be a snack before I could scream.
16:49I pressed into the wall.
16:51Every muscle in my body trembled.
16:53The excavator sniffed around and turned straight toward me.
16:56Before it could lunge, the mirror mantis struck,
16:59driving its blade clean through the beast.
17:02My eyes went wide.
17:03As the monsters fought, it gave me a brief opening to escape.
17:06But the sensation that I was forgetting something flashed in my mind.
17:10Where was the spore cloud?
17:12I saw it hovering just out of arm's reach of the mantis and the excavator,
17:16dodging their blows.
17:17It had no idea where to go.
17:19I gritted my teeth, remembering how hard the spore cloud fought to save me earlier.
17:24I couldn't just leave it.
17:25I charged into the fray.
17:27The mantis' pincers sliced past my face.
17:30I dropped low, then sprang back as the excavator's jaws snapped shut where I'd just been.
17:36Each strike shook the pit like thunder.
17:38My spore cloud hovered inches away, trembling but still glowing bright.
17:42Come on, fungus!
17:43I shouted.
17:45Without you, the kids will just call me a regular freak again.
17:47Its glow pulsed, once, twice, then burst into a happy shimmer before zipping straight toward me.
17:54I grinned.
17:56Good.
17:57That's the spirit.
17:59Let's get out of here.
18:01We quickly ducked into the hole recently dug by the night excavator and pressed on.
18:06The sound of clashing talons and pincers echoed through the tunnel behind us.
18:10I moved as fast as I could, because whoever won that battle would be coming for us next.
18:17The tunnels forked into hundreds of different paths.
18:20Which way would lead me to the half-flower of the heavens?
18:25Would it be the same path I'd use to escape?
18:27I had no time to think.
18:29Just moved left at one fork, then right at the next.
18:33As we continued, the tunnels slowly grew wider and wider.
18:37From my cloud's dim glow, I could see that the tunnels transitioned from harsh dirt to smooth stone,
18:43as if carved out by man.
18:45Then, a light became visible up ahead.
18:48My eyes widened.
18:49Is this what I think it is?
18:51I surged forward, turned the corner, and found a long chamber,
18:55filled with glowing runes along the wall.
18:58It was an ancient place, overgrown with roots that stretched across the floor and walls.
19:03And it was exactly as my father described it.
19:07I dropped to my knees.
19:08Tears of happiness flooded from my eyes.
19:11I found it, Cloud.
19:13I found the cave my dad talked about.
19:15The half-flower is somewhere here.
19:18I pressed ahead.
19:19Scanning each and every corner for the half-flower.
19:22The shimmering runes glowed blue.
19:24Then, my spore cloud did the same, as if responding to the ancient walls.
19:29It was a charming display.
19:31All of my worries vanished.
19:33For once, I was smiling.
19:35That's weird, Cloud.
19:37I've never seen you be anything other than gray before.
19:40Before Cloud could even look at me, the sound of a sharp scrape snapped me from my happiness.
19:45It echoed along the cave walls behind me.
19:48I spun, looking into the emptiness of the tunnel that I had come from.
19:52My heart hammered with a realization.
19:55The sound of the battle between the Mirror Mantis and the Night Excavator stopped a while ago.
19:59Who won?
20:00I stared into the darkness, hoping that the beast wouldn't find me.
20:05The Mirror Mantis exploded out of the abyss with a screech.
20:08One of its eyes hung from its eye socket by a stringy piece of flesh.
20:13Its posture was now crooked after its tremendous battle.
20:16That just meant it was even hungrier for its next human meal.
20:20I bolted.
20:21Cloud, let's go.
20:23We took off down the corridor, moving as fast as we could.
20:26But the Mantis wasn't taking its time anymore.
20:28It used every limb to scale across the chamber walls, gaining speed with each pull.
20:33My mind flashed to my parents.
20:36For them, I couldn't afford to fail.
20:38I had to live.
20:40My foot caught on a root, and I rolled across the floor.
20:43I tried to crawl to my feet, but one of the pincers stabbed into my hand, pinning me to the
20:48ground.
20:49I screamed in pain.
20:51I can't die like this!
20:52I won't let you kill me!
20:54I tried to wrestle out, but my squirming did nothing.
20:57To the Mirror Mantis, I was just an insect.
20:59Its breath puffed against the back of my neck.
21:02I could hear its mandibles chirping, preparing for a large bite.
21:06I scanned the area.
21:08Surely there had to be a way out of this.
21:10Suddenly, up ahead, the glowing runes flashed bright.
21:14Then they peeled off the wall.
21:16I blinked hard to make sure I wasn't imagining it.
21:19I wasn't.
21:20Hundreds of runes flew off the walls,
21:22merging together into something shapeless and formless.
21:26Something that hovered into the air.
21:28They were morphing into a dense blue spore cloud.
21:31The blue cloud rocketed across the chamber and knocked the mantis right off me.
21:36I struggled to my feet, watching as the blue smoke enveloped the mantis.
21:41The beast thrashed, but it was no match against the ancient colony that withered it down,
21:46slowly melting its skin.
21:48Then, the mantis rolled across the floor,
21:50and with one final shriek, it went stiff.
21:54Dead.
21:54I let out a sigh of relief.
21:56I was hoping that I could tame the mantis once I found the half flower.
22:00But at that moment, I was glad to be alive at all.
22:03I continued down the chamber, looking for the flower,
22:06when I felt a sudden pinch at my leg.
22:08Ow!
22:09I looked down.
22:10A blue blur wrapped around my leg.
22:12My skin sizzled, then slowly ripped away.
22:15The pain instantly brought tears to my eyes.
22:18I jerked away and saw the entire colony of blue spores hovering in the air.
22:22They were coming after me now.
22:24I looked at my own spore cloud.
22:26I thought they were your friends.
22:28My cloud just looked ahead, as the blue smoke flew right toward me.
22:32Guess they weren't friendly after all.
22:33The blue smoke grew wide, moving to wrap around me.
22:37But my vision went gray, and the smoke stopped, just inches from my face.
22:41My own spore cloud was creating a protective barrier.
22:44Cloud, you're awesome!
22:46The relief didn't last long.
22:48I could see the blue smoke breaking down my own spore cloud's barrier.
22:52A couple of them cracked through the protective shield, eating away at my skin.
22:56I continued down the tunnel.
22:58I needed to find the half flower.
23:00Maybe it could stop this.
23:01It was a miracle after all.
23:03But with each step, I could feel the blue smoke digging deeper and deeper,
23:07peeling away my skin in patches.
23:10The pain was too much.
23:11I fell to the ground.
23:12I didn't even have the energy to crawl anymore.
23:14How many times would I almost die?
23:16How many times would the beast that I called useless have to save me?
23:20I watched as my gray spore cloud slowly broke down.
23:23In just a few moments, it had ceased to exist.
23:26It didn't deserve to die alongside me.
23:28I screamed.
23:29Leave, Cloud.
23:30You did your best.
23:32I'm sorry I ever doubted you.
23:34Cloud's eyes blinked at me.
23:36Then it darted deeper into the tunnel.
23:38I smiled.
23:39That's right.
23:40Go find a tamer better than me.
23:42Go.
23:42The blue spores ate away at me faster.
23:45Blood spilled from the holes spreading across my body.
23:47I would have sat there and accepted death.
23:49But a dim, gray light forced me to look ahead.
23:53Cloud hovered nearby, watching me.
23:55I gritted my teeth.
23:56What are you doing?
23:58Get out of here!
23:59Cloud flashed with light.
24:00It didn't move at all.
24:01Did it want me to follow it?
24:03I laughed.
24:04I spent the entire day blaming you for my problems.
24:07Maybe I should have just put my trust in you this whole time.
24:10Energy surged through me.
24:12Not Cloud's mana, but pure determination.
24:14I climbed to my feet and shouted.
24:16But I was wrong, Cloud!
24:18I'm putting my trust in you now!
24:20I stumbled toward Cloud.
24:22Each step was pure agony.
24:24But I wouldn't give up.
24:25I used all my strength to move.
24:27For me.
24:27For my parents.
24:29For Cloud.
24:30Where are you taking me, buddy?
24:32I can't keep going like this.
24:34I don't have much time left.
24:36Cloud suddenly flashed so bright the entire chamber illuminated gray.
24:40We had reached its destination.
24:42I looked around.
24:43What did it want me to see?
24:45Then, right below Cloud, I saw the glowing half-flower of the heavens.
24:49Hope suddenly overtook the overwhelming pain.
24:52I don't know what your secret is, Cloud, but you're a miracle.
24:55I dove to the floor and ripped the half-flower from the ground.
24:58There was an air of pure power radiating around it.
25:01But I couldn't waste a single second.
25:03I swallowed the flower, exactly like my mother did.
25:06And I braced.
25:08And I braced.
25:09And I braced.
25:09Would my body digest the flower first?
25:12Or would the blue smoke digest me?
25:14My spore cloud hovered close, its glow flickering in rhythm with my heartbeat.
25:19For a moment, I swore it was watching.
25:22Not with fear, but with expectation.
25:24The blue smoke crawled across my skin, unraveling me thread by thread.
25:29But instead of panic, all I felt was wonder.
25:33Something else was moving inside me.
25:35A power that was old and ancient.
25:38My eyes fluttered shut.
25:39When I opened them again, the world had changed.
25:43Everything appeared to me like a blueprint.
25:46Bones, instincts, strengths, weaknesses, were all presented to me like a computer interface.
25:52The flower I'd swallowed was fusing with something dormant in my blood.
25:56It felt like it was changing me.
25:58For the first time, I wasn't afraid.
26:00I just wanted to know what I'd turn into.
