Machu Picchu overtourism: A bucket list ‘dream’ is turning into a ‘nightmare’ for visitors

A global heritage foundation has offered to work with Peruvian authorities to improve conditions at Machu Picchu as tourists face overcrowding, long queues and transport problems.

00:01A Global Heritage Foundation has offered to work with Peruvian authorities to
00:06improve conditions at Machu Picchu. The iconic tourist destination is a bucket
00:11list item for many, but tourists are increasingly facing more overcrowding,
00:16long queues and unreliable transport services. In September, the foundation
00:22behind the list of the Seven World Wonders warned that Machu Picchu's
00:25status as one of those wonders is at risk. Now they're offering to help
00:30Since then, sadly, unfortunately, but not surprisingly due to the political
00:35quasi-paralysis in Peru, we have seen no progress. So we've come back to Lima to
00:41advance the discussions now that the democratic process is really reaching a
00:45critical positive point, we hope, with a solution and a new leadership. And we
00:49hope to be able to work with the new leadership once it's in place to find a
00:53positive outcome for Machu Picchu's one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
00:58The foundation said it is not currently considering stripping Machu Picchu of its
01:02wonder of the world designation, but would like to see improvements to the site.
