00:00At the Oscars this year, this is going to be a timely video,
00:02K-pop Demon Hunters won the Oscar for Best Animated Picture,
00:04continuing a recent trend as it's the fourth year in a row
00:06that Disney lost out on Best Animated Picture Oscar.
00:09While this would be a non-topic for any other category,
00:11with Disney, it's different.
00:12For the longest time, with a few odd years,
00:14Disney's Animated Films had always been the Animated Film Oscar.
00:17That's mostly due to the fact that, well, the films that won were good,
00:20animation has always been seen as kid stuff,
00:24and Disney kind of rules in that department.
00:25It's also why we don't see a lot of other animated films
00:28get nominated in other categories.
00:30Occasionally, it's broken out with single category,
00:32films like Beauty and Beast, which was nominated before there was an Animated Category,
00:35and Up were Best Picture nominees, but those are rare occasions.
00:38But ever since the 2023 ceremony with Gamela, Doctora and Pinocchio winning,
00:41we've seen a sea change in how animated films are handled by the Oscars in general.
00:45And I want to look at what does this mean, and how did we come to this?
00:48Well, I believe this happened because the Oscars have changed its membership.
00:51Since 2016, the Academy has taken a lot of strides to diversify their membership,
00:54especially in regards to non-American members.
00:56The big effect you see is that there's a lot more international films being nominated
00:59outside the International Film Oscar, especially in the Best Picture category.
01:02This year, we had Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent get Best Picture nods.
01:05This might have affected the Best Animated Film category in regards to what films win.
01:09In 2024, Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and The Heron won the Best Animated Film Oscar,
01:13and the year that followed, Flo won both Best Animated Film and Best International Film.
01:16Miyazaki has won an Oscar before, so that's not out of the question,
01:19but Flo was an independent animated film made by one guy,
01:22Gint Sibaldis from Latvia. Many animated films from countries that aren't America
01:26or don't speak English have been nominated, and, you know, the one Ghibli film wins,
01:30but outside of that, they seldom win.
01:31I see this as an influence from the more diverse and international Oscar membership.
01:34This also brings me onto another thing about Disney's recent Luton streak.
01:38K-pop Demon Hunters is a Netflix film.
01:39Well, a film Sony sold to Netflix, but still a Netflix film,
01:42and one of the company's big hits, and its second Oscar-winning animated film.
01:46I mentioned before that Netflix has got a good collection of animated films under their belt.
01:50Nomona is great, Pinocchio got an Oscar,
01:52they get a lot of animation veterans making these films,
01:55and I'm excited for Fixed.
01:57And some of the upcoming films include Brad Bird's Ray Gun,
02:00another Gimlieland Dottler animated film,
02:02and Steps, a reimagining of The Cinderella Story.
02:04Okay, they're probably not going to be winners or nominees,
02:07but considering how big K-pop Demon Hunters got,
02:09and the Netflix marketing machine,
02:11we might see them take Disney's spot in the future.
02:13Or it might not.
02:14I'm just speculating at this point, and Disney could end up with another Oscar winner.
02:17Streaks kind of begin and end.
02:18We are getting a Toy Story 5 this year, so who knows?
02:21All I see now, it's an interesting competition now,
02:22especially with a more diverse voting pool.
