00:00Texans Fan Battle Podcast put this graphic up the other day,
00:04and this got me excited because I love Will Anderson.
00:06He's my favorite player on the team.
00:07I like Will Anderson.
00:09The list of left tackles going against Will Anderson this year,
00:12and I know they'll probably move them.
00:14Daniil and Will don't always switch sides from time over.
00:19Of these left tackles, Seth, I don't know if you're looking at the list or not.
00:24I will be soon, Sean.
00:25Well, I'll tell you the two I'm most excited about on this list.
00:29The two that I have that would be main events anywhere in the country, Mean Gene,
00:34Laramie Tunsil, for obvious reasons, and your guy, Jordan Mailata.
00:40Oh, yeah.
00:41You were marveling at Jordan Mailata all Super Bowl week.
00:45You would not shut up about what a large individual that person was.
00:49Yeah, and a hell of a swell dude, too.
00:52You talk to him.
00:52We have something in common.
00:53We both know Jeff Stoutland, obviously.
00:55He was his offensive line coach, and he was really there.
00:57I saw an interview with him where he was really emotional about how much Jeff Stoutland meant to him.
01:03Yeah.
01:04And the Eagles, as they tend to do, they do all these things that seem dramatic,
01:09and it's the wrong thing to do, and then lo and behold, they're in a Super Bowl again.
01:13But yeah, that's a big one.
01:15I had the three I put main event level, because I'm booking this like it's Will Anderson at WrestleMania.
01:21Laramie Tunsil, for just the sizzle of him going against his former teammate, and hopefully destroying him.
01:29Jordan Mailata, just because he's a massive, massive human being who plays for what's been the best offensive line in
01:34football.
01:35And those are two big road games for the Texans in cold weather.
01:38You're going to need the defense to come up big.
01:40And then Rashaun Slater was the other one.
01:42I believe Houston's own, Rashaun Slater, of the Los Angeles Chargers.
01:47That sounds right.
01:47Yeah.
01:49You know, he was out last year when the two teams played.
01:51We didn't get that matchup last year, because he and Joe Alt were both done for the season.
01:55I would add Tyler Guyton from the Cowboys.
01:59You put that?
02:00Because he was one of the ones in their release video.
02:02They had the three Tylers on their team.
02:04Yeah.
02:04He was one of them.
02:05And they took some shots at Houston.
02:07They did?
02:08Yeah.
02:09They basically said that Houston doesn't deserve an NFL team.
02:13Okay.
02:14This is a weird thing to say about a team that's been better than your team throughout its existence.
02:18They've been around for 25 years now, too.
02:20Yeah.
02:20Yeah.
02:20Okay.
02:21I didn't see the video, but it's stupid.
02:23Yeah.
02:23So you elevate Guyton to main event level.
02:27The other ones on here that I had that I'm intrigued by, Ronnie Stanley with the Ravens,
02:33who's not what he used to be, but he's still a name.
02:35Yeah.
02:36And it's the Ravens.
02:36You know, that's presumably the Ravens with Lamar Jackson.
02:40You know, so that'll be, you know, you'll need a big game out of Will there.
02:44I would say Spencer Fano with the Browns.
02:47Because at that point, who knows who's playing quarterback.
02:50Yeah.
02:50Week 10.
02:51And you've got a rookie offensive tackle versus either, it might be Deshaun Watson.
02:58It might be, what the hell?
03:01Shador Sanders.
03:04You couldn't even realize that.
03:05You're the only human being who would forget Shador Sanders.
03:08I know.
03:08I know.
03:08I know.
03:08No.
03:09And it's not out of disrespect.
03:10No.
03:11It's just that this is the point in the morning when all of a sudden my brain, I probably just
03:15had a stroke.
03:16Shador Sanders or whoever else it might be.
03:19Other names on here that are interesting.
03:21Andrew Thomas from the Giants.
03:23He's been a pro bowler lately.
03:24Deion Dawkins.
03:26He's out there a lot talking and doing things from the Buffalo Bills.
03:29Yeah.
03:29Deion Dawkins.
03:30And that's the opener.
03:31That's the opener.
03:32But he's on.
03:32He's just very out there.
03:33He's very public.
03:34I want to say he had a, didn't he do something?
03:36I thought he was really complimentary.
03:38The Texans did at one point.
03:40Yeah.
03:41This year in a podcast.
03:42He was.
03:43Well, look, if you look at the Bills last year, their offensive line, I think one thing
03:47is impressive as it was in a performance by the defense, their, their old line was really
03:52banged up and they got taken to the woodshed by, you know, when you have a banged up offensive
03:57line going against that defensive line, that's going to happen.
04:00So I'm guessing, I'm guessing there's a whole lot of, you know, Bill's offensive linemen
04:06circling that game on the schedule, wanting to come in and be better than they were last
04:10year.
04:10It'd be awesome.
04:11It'd be awesome to give them the exact same thing.
04:13Oh yeah.
04:14Oh, that'd be great.
04:15Yeah.
04:15And Bill, we don't have to wait long for that one.
04:17No, no, that one's a, that's, that's week one, baby.
04:20That is week one.
04:22Tommy Togiai named the most underappreciated Houston Texan in an article on NFL.com yesterday.
04:28I would say that's accurate, especially since people going into free agency, people were
04:34acting like the Texans didn't even have a starting defensive tackle next to Sheldon Rankin.
04:39Right.
04:39That was, they were listed as a huge gaping hole and they need to do something about this
04:45because they only have one, they only have, you know, before they signed Sheldon Rankins,
04:49they said they had zero defensive tackles.
04:51That was extreme disrespect for Tommy Togiai.
04:53He was one of the best run staff, but he's not a run set.
04:56He's a better pass protector or pass rusher than people probably think.
04:59Um, but he's, uh, he was one of the most effective guys in the league versus the run
05:03last year.
05:04Yep.
05:04Yep.
05:04I don't, I, he's definitely not underappreciated in that building.
05:07He's, well, you know, he's a guy we're waiting to see if they give him another extension this
05:10off season.
05:11That might sneak up out of nowhere.
05:13Remember last year they did it in season.
05:15Well, he would be a guy that I would look at that.
05:18I know Nico, pro bowl and all pro.
05:20I'm just talking about the dynamic of the Texans rewarding guys whose contracts are severely
05:26undervalued.
05:27Yeah.
05:27Tommy Togiai for what he did last year.
05:29Now Nico's got a much bigger body where I'm not saying Tommy Togiai is Nico Collins, everybody.
05:32Well, but I'm just saying the behavior of the team that Tommy Togiai at 3.3 million
05:37for this coming season is a bargain.
05:40Well, but it, but it's also, he's, he's going to be a free agent afterwards too.
05:43So it's not like extending somebody before his deal is up or something.
05:46That would be a move.
05:47I think they should, they should extend it to try to, to lock him in.
05:50Now, if they're looking at it and they're starting to look off into the future and man,
05:54they've committed a lot of money to big money contracts.
05:56That might be one where this might be one of the tough decisions they have to make where,
06:01Hey, Tommy Togiai is looking at the money he might get in free agency.
06:05And are the Texans willing to do that when they just drafted a defensive tackle very high
06:11in the second round?
06:12Yeah.
06:12They, they, they signed one in Logan Hall and the free agents in free agency.
06:16Are they, would they, would they give Tommy Togiai a contract?
06:18I'm very curious about this with you.
06:20What, cause you play the same, played the same position Tommy Togiai played.
06:23And let's say that the two, I'm not going to get deep into numbers, but the two scenarios
06:27are you extend with the Texans, but it's at a hometown discount or you test the market
06:32after this, you bet on yourself and test the market after the season.
06:35What would you do?
06:38I would take the money if they, if they threw up, especially if I'm in Tommy Togiai's situation
06:42and like, let's leave any sentimental attachment out of it or anything.
06:46Just like from a, uh, just from a standpoint of, all right, the financial part of it, he's
06:52never had a gigantic contract yet.
06:54Yeah.
06:55And, and I mean, a guy that wasn't drafted high and making the league minimum, even though
07:00the league minimum was a lot these years, these days, these years, um, until, until
07:04last year, you got a little boost.
07:06Yep.
07:06Um, I think if somebody throws you really respectable money and you don't think of yourself yet
07:13as a guy that's like, oh yeah, I'm going to get a lot of money on the first
07:16free agency market.
07:17I just, you think of it as I could, but I don't know for sure that that first contract.
07:22Yeah.
07:23I take it.
07:23I take the financial security.
07:25It's had one really, really good season.
07:27Right.
07:27Right.
07:27But the, the biggest thing is injuries, you know, if I, if I have a bad injury and then
07:32I'm sitting out there in free agency and I turned down an opportunity to get, I don't
07:36know, like 20 or $30 million guaranteed or virtually guaranteed, then that's, that's it for
07:43me.
07:43It's a, that, that after you, if I'm Tommy told me the Texans offer me 20 million guaranteed,
07:49I am, I am driving a hundred miles an hour to the state.
07:52I think that's why I'd always, that's why I'd be a bad agent, at least in terms of, I'd
07:57be a good agent because I would care about, I would tell my clients, listen, more money
08:03is always great.
08:03But first let's get to look, you've got money to where you don't have to do anything for
08:08the rest of your life.
08:09You can take care of your family.
08:10You can do all these things.
08:11And then we'll get greedy after that.
08:13But like, let's just be sure we get that first part knocked down because the downside of
08:18not accepting this, and this is where ego comes into it because then you, and you listen
08:23to too many motivational podcasts and what have you about just, you know, you know, always
08:28striving for achieving more and being this and believe in yourself and all of that.
08:32Sometimes you get like, listen, listen, listen, some things are out of your control.
08:35All right.
08:36Yeah.
08:36You tear your knee apart or anything.
08:38Yeah.
08:39The way the agents think about this, and this is why Andrew Brandt always pisses me off.
08:43Andrew Brandt thinks that players worry too much about injuries because it's rare that
08:47a guy has such a bad injury that he doesn't get a good contract after that.
08:51That's easy to say when you're an agent and he's a former agent who has a hundred clients
08:56because for the agent, oh, only 2% of my guys are going to have a devastating injury
09:01like that.
09:01Right.
09:02If you're one of those two guys, it's pretty damn devastating.
09:05It alters your life.
09:06Like, so it's like, let's, let's just try to keep your priorities in order here.
09:09Yep.
09:10So I say all that to say lock Tommy Togiai down, low ball him, and maybe he takes it.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Don't call it a low ball, but you know.
09:17You know.
