00:00This year, we have a lot of films made by YouTubers.
00:02We've already had Markiplier's adaptation of video game Iron Lung come out and do good business at the box office.
00:08And down the line, we have the feature film version of Cain Parsons' Backroom series,
00:12Cully Baker's Obsession, his film after his YouTube film Milk and Cereal was a big hit on the site.
00:21And sketch comedy duo Britannic's Pizza Movie.
00:24This was following last year, which had films by creators like Chris Stuckman, Rucka Rucka and Kagoda.
00:29This isn't a recent trend, we've had YouTubers or internet personalities in general branch out in the past,
00:34but those were more independent productions like Rooster Teeth's Lazer Team or the Angry Video Game Nerd movie,
00:38both of which were funded via crowdfunding.
00:41But this recent site of YouTube movies have more mainstream, if you call it that, backing.
00:45I see this as a signifier that internet culture is now starting to merge with the general pop culture,
00:49mama culture, or whatever we call it now, and this is causing you to think about what it means in
00:52the long term.
00:53This isn't new, they're having several new mediums that have popped up alongside the movies.
00:57TV in the 50s, video games in the 2010s, and now the internet has risen to that position now,
01:02with the rise of online content like streaming services, and whatever we call what we do on this website.
01:07I've noticed how internet culture is having a major influence on recent culture as well.
01:10One of the previously mentioned YouTuber movies is The Backrooms, a movie based on a web series,
01:14based on an internet creepypasta, the Five Nights at Freddy's movies are big successful movies,
01:18through now a small part into how the game series grew a fan base off the internet via the Let's
01:23Play community,
01:23which the film repaid with given prominent internet personalities cameos,
01:27and the next Oscar ceremony will now be on YouTube, instead of a traditional television broadcaster.
01:32But is this influence good? I don't know, it's kind of too early to tell.
01:35It's kind of become old hat to say that Hollywood doesn't make anything new these days.
01:39And while I don't particularly share this for you, I talked about this type of thinking in an old video
01:43of mine.
01:44Now a lot of recent media is often made to appeal to fans,
01:47but a lot of it focuses on the nostalgic market.
01:52It's usually a day that ends in Y whenever some 80s movies get a legacy sequel.
01:57But K-pop Demon Hunter's success can be due to it appealing to a current pop-cultural trend than something
02:02from the past.
02:03But most modern media has often been reused and has been stuck in recently.
02:07Seeing the film industry take a chance on works and creators who had their start on the internet is encouraging
02:12and refreshing,
02:13but there is a risk that it might become trend-chasing.
02:15A tap in some internet personality with a large following might be good business for some people,
02:20but it's a risky gamble for others.
02:22But on the other hand, YouTube can be a good avenue for people to get their start,
02:25especially if they struggle to get in via traditional means.
02:27Milk and Cereal was released on YouTube due to an issue of distribution and other paperwork,
02:30and now Carrie Baker has two films coming down the line with the backing of a major studio.
02:33Heck, some creators are just making films and sticking them onto YouTube for free,
02:36like the folk filmmaking movement, which is its own thing and probably would need another video to explain.
02:40Heck, I even made short films and have put them on the channel,
02:42and you can watch after this video.
02:44Look, I've got a self-emount, I'm a small fry compared to who I mentioned in this video.
02:47Anyway, due to internet video still being a young medium,
02:49it's too early to tell how the internet culture will affect general culture,
02:53and how the film industry will adapt to this recent input of filmmakers
02:56who saw it or were based on this site in the first place.
