00:04This is what experts call the Mirador Archaeological Site.
00:08It houses some of the greatest secrets of the Mayan civilization, one dating back some 3,000 years.
00:14However, recently archaeologists have unearthed new items during excavations, ones that not only date back thousands of years,
00:20but also connect the Mayan civilization to another cultural group, known to be one of the oldest to ever rule
00:25the region.
00:26The researchers specifically discovered these ceramic relics, ones they say linked the Mayan civilization to the Olmecs.
00:32The Olmecs had the earliest Mesoamerican civilization we know of, with evidence of their culture stretching from Campeche to Yucatan
00:39in Mexico.
00:40The artifacts have been dated as coming from between 1,000 to 350 BCE, meaning they were made at least
00:45500 years before the Mayan civilization peaked.
00:48This also points to this specific site at Mirador being a more important cultural city center than previously believed as
00:54well,
00:54with the archaeologists saying that since Mirador existed before Rome, in its prime it may have even been the largest
01:00capital city in the world.
