00:33Congratulations, Maddie.
00:34She's someone I think a lot of people hadn't heard of before this year,
00:36but she's had some good results.
00:38She was on the Belgian team that beat the U.S. team also.
00:40I'm curious just what you made of her game
00:42and what you were able to figure out.
00:46The U.S. team.
00:47We also played her in Lake Nona last year,
00:51so I knew of her, and so I had an idea.
00:55And then obviously she played so well against the U.S. team
00:58a couple weeks ago.
00:59So I definitely thought that I was going to have to come out
01:03and really stick to my game,
01:05and I think that I did a really good job
01:07just kind of doing what I wanted to do and sticking with that.
01:13Congratulations.
01:14You landed almost 75% of your first serves today.
01:19Was that like a point of emphasis for you,
01:22or was it just more like you just got into a good rhythm
01:24and things were just working out?
01:25Were you just really trying to make it sort of maybe take a little bit off
01:28your first serve and get it in there and play from there?
01:32I feel like it's playing so bouncy
01:36that my kick serve was working so well.
01:40So I think I was actually probably using that
01:42maybe a little bit more than I normally would,
01:45which is a little bit obviously of a safer serve.
01:48So I think that made a big impact.
01:50Yeah.
01:50And just a quick question,
01:51and I guess maybe this is more of a rhetorical question,
01:53but you pulled out of the final 125 in Strasbourg.
01:57It's safe to assume...
01:59Paris.
01:59I'm sorry.
02:00Paris.
02:01Yeah.
02:01It's safe to assume that health-wise,
02:05everything is good now, 100%?
02:08Good today.
02:09Yeah, okay.
02:10Yeah.
02:10Fair enough.
02:11We're good today.
02:12All right.
02:12Fair enough.
02:17Hi, Maddie.
02:18Congrats on the win.
02:19I wanted to ask if you have noticed
02:20the extreme proliferation of dogs at tournaments lately
02:24and obviously tiny dogs because they have to travel.
02:28But I feel like every player has a dog now
02:30and it's like nothing new,
02:31but I feel like it's really boomed in the past year.
02:34And I wonder if you have noticed that
02:36and if you would ever consider...
02:37You don't travel with a dog, right?
02:39There's a lot of dogs.
02:41You have feelings about the dog.
02:43There's just a lot of dogs.
02:44Dogs are great.
02:46I think dogs are of large responsibility though.
02:49Okay.
02:49So as long as we're doing that,
02:51then I think dogs are wonderful.
02:53Oh, you're saying people could maybe be more responsible.
02:55I'm not saying anything.
02:56Gotcha.
02:56I'm saying that dogs are a big responsibility
02:58and we all need to take care of dogs.
03:01Okay.
03:02I personally really like sleeping in
03:04and don't like going for walks in the rain.
03:07So I don't have a dog yet
03:09because I'm not ready for that responsibility.
03:13So you will not see me on tour with a dog.
03:15Do you understand maybe the benefit of why
03:18a tennis player who kind of lives this nomadic solid?
03:20Do you get why they do it though?
03:22A hundred percent.
03:23I think it's so funny.
03:25Hayley has her dog who's so sweet and so cute.
03:28But she's literally, I just sit in the room
03:32and I just hold my dog.
03:34Like I'm obsessed.
03:36She's like so happy.
03:37So I can, I totally see how it feels
03:41like a little bit of normalcy
03:43and a piece of home
03:44and what are they called?
03:45Emotional support animals.
03:47So like I can see where that's valid
03:50when we travel so much
03:52to have a little bit of
03:54just like something that we love.
04:00Hi Maddie.
04:01From Ava's question to dogs,
04:03I'm going to sliding.
04:04So varied topics here.
04:06I read in a recent interview
04:08that you said sliding on clay
04:11is like the most challenging aspect.
04:13And...
04:14I said that?
04:15That's what I read.
04:16Maybe you didn't.
04:17Maybe you have an opinion
04:18that's different to that.
04:20I think sliding,
04:21once you figure it out,
04:22it's kind of easy.
04:24Okay.
04:24How do you get to figure it out?
04:28I think I was lucky
04:31that I grew up in South Florida.
04:33So I, I mean we have green clay
04:35which is obviously different
04:37but close enough
04:39that you can learn
04:40at least the footwork.
04:42And it was really just
04:44your coach telling you to go out
04:47and honestly sometimes
04:48we would just run
04:49from sideline to sideline
04:50learning how to slide
04:51with both feet.
04:53Was that fun?
04:54or grueling?
04:55It started fun.
04:57It was kind of how quickly
04:59you picked up out of the slide
05:00was like did it stay fun
05:02or did it become
05:03more of a workout?
05:04But I think just having
05:05all of those reps
05:06I was able to just kind of
05:08figure it out.
05:09And I think you see
05:11the people who grow up on clay
05:13it's a pretty natural movement.
05:15And, and then I think
05:16you see other people
05:17who maybe they kind of struggle
05:19at first in their career
05:21but then it's almost like
05:22this light bulb moment
05:24when they do finally get it
05:25it just feels like
05:26all of a sudden
05:27all these doors open up.
05:29What does a good slide feel like?
05:32A good slide feels like
05:35you're, you have just the right amount
05:37of pressure in your feet
05:39so you can kind of keep going
05:40as far as you want.
05:44and it's just you time it perfectly.
05:46I always, I was always so impressed
05:49with Kiki Burtons
05:50because she was the best
05:52in my opinion.
05:53She was one of the best movers
05:54on clay and she timed
05:55everything so perfectly
05:56and she would slide
05:58with her outside leg so well
06:00and she was always exactly
06:01where she wanted to be.
06:05Hey Maddy, earlier Coco said
06:07that she didn't receive
06:08a response from the Australian Open
06:10after the, you know,
06:11the incident with the
06:12smashing the racket
06:13in the hallway
06:15and she, you know,
06:16or not even an apology.
06:18Back when it happened
06:19a lot of people said
06:20that you were quite active
06:21in, you know,
06:22when the cameras were first put in
06:24you were really active
06:25in the player council
06:25and wanting them
06:26to be taken out.
06:28So I'm curious about
06:28your perspective
06:29on that whole situation.
06:31I was, I guess it's not
06:36a new thing for me
06:37to be upset about
06:39when things like that happen.
06:40I feel like every single time
06:42I see some video on social media
06:45of some player having
06:47a total meltdown
06:48and it's like all of the comments
06:50that come with it
06:51and the judgment and everything.
06:54There's so much of our lives
06:55that we have to do publicly
06:57that I feel like it's becoming
07:00a little big brother
07:01that a lot of times
07:03you forget that there are cameras
07:05because why would there be
07:07a camera watching you
07:0824-7 a day?
07:10And I think especially
07:12sometimes you forget
07:13that there's microphones
07:14on them as well.
07:15So it's just another layer
07:18of having to make sure
07:21that you're public facing
07:24all of the time
07:25and it just feels like
07:26we're getting a little too
07:30we're getting a little too
07:31overbearing
07:32I think
07:32with all of
07:33all of the cameras
07:35and I know people love them
07:36because it's content
07:37and whatever
07:38but if you had to walk around
07:40your entire workplace
07:41with cameras all over
07:42and at any moment
07:43if you did something dumb
07:44it was going to be
07:45on social media
07:46you would probably feel
07:47the way that I do as well.
07:54Did you feel your complaints
07:56were even kind of
07:57taken on board
07:57or responded to
07:59or at all?
08:01I think the players
08:02agreed with me
08:03but it just kind of
08:05you know
08:05the powers that be
08:06and they were approved
08:09so it was just
08:11moving forward
08:11and obviously
08:13the way that
08:14the tours work
08:16the players
08:17and the tournaments
08:18have to
08:19both agree to things
08:20in order
08:21to make a rule
08:22move forward
08:23and if the players
08:24want it
08:24but the tournaments
08:25think that it's great
08:26and it's good for broadcasting
08:27and they make more money
08:28then we're just going to have
08:30kind of a stalemate there
08:33so
08:33I got some signs
08:35that are put up
08:36and now they say
08:38you're being broadcasted
08:42good job
08:43thank you
08:44yeah
08:44big win
08:46I'm doing something
08:47that looks ahead
08:47to the open
08:48Maddie
08:48and it's about
08:49American players
08:51how they deal
08:52with crowds
08:52the big matches
08:53at the open
08:54compared to other
08:55venues
08:55of the slam
08:56specifically
08:57and I wonder
08:57for me
08:58if you could just
08:58compare what it was
08:59like to play
09:00arena
09:01in Ash 2023
09:02compared to what it was
09:03like to play
09:04in the Aussie open
09:04final
09:05like how did the crowd
09:06and the atmosphere
09:07and the two venues
09:08one of course
09:09you're a home player
09:10how did those affect
09:11you and what not
09:11I think that
09:14pretty much every time
09:15I've ever played
09:16at the US open
09:18in front of
09:18a big crowd
09:19a small crowd
09:20a late night crowd
09:21I've always had
09:23just the greatest
09:24experience
09:25and
09:27they have helped me
09:28get back in matches
09:29they have helped me
09:30in tough moments
09:31and
09:32I think
09:34looking back
09:35at the US open
09:36match against arena
09:38I think they really
09:39helped
09:41me
09:41kind of reset
09:42after the second set
09:43and then
09:44you know
09:45play really good
09:45tennis again
09:46and even when
09:47I lost the leads
09:48and things like that
09:49there was still
09:50so much
09:51support
09:51that
09:52it's just a place
09:54that I've always
09:54felt like
09:56there's
09:56nothing like
09:58being an American
09:59playing
09:59in Ash
10:00within
10:01home crowd
10:05I'm just curious
10:05for your
10:06level of
10:07intrigue
10:08excitement
10:09curiosity
10:10whatever it may be
10:11about
10:11speculated
10:13Serena Williams
10:13come back
10:14to tour
10:15this year
10:16I
10:17think that
10:20Serena Williams
10:21playing tennis
10:21is only good
10:22for tennis
10:23let's be real
10:24we all want to
10:25watch Serena
10:26play tennis
10:26so
10:29I am
10:30excited to see
10:31I'm going to
10:32check some
10:33entry lists
10:33occasionally
10:34see what pops up
10:36but yeah
10:36I mean
10:37I think
10:38I mean
10:39she's the goat
10:39so I think
10:40it would be
10:41amazing
10:41if she comes
10:42back
10:42you know
10:42it seems like
10:43a pretty universal
10:44sentiment
10:44like everyone's
10:44just excited
10:45about this
10:45possibility
10:47yeah
10:48I mean
10:48it's
10:48you literally
10:49get to watch
10:50history
10:50every single
10:50time she
10:51takes the
