A playable pre-release version of GTA 4 was leaked online, exciting fans with assets and ideas cut from the final game, including a ferry system. However, the files were quickly scrubbed from the internet, raising questions about a possible DMCA takedown.

00:00Barely a week after it surfaced, the cut content treasure trove of a GTA 4 pre-release build
00:06is being scrubbed from the internet. This week, a user on the GTA forums posted a build of GTA 4
00:13that was found on a dev kit that they picked up at a car boot sale in Edinburgh, not too
00:18far from
00:18Rockstar North. The leaked build featured assets and ideas that never made it into the game,
00:23including a fairy. This inspired comment from Obi-Van Mai, former technical director at Rockstar
00:29North, who confirmed that fairies were indeed cut late in the development of GTA 4. What's more,
00:35fans even managed to access a somewhat playable build of this in-development version of the game.
00:40It now seems, however, the uploaded build is no longer available, and it's unclear if this was
00:45a result of a DMCA takedown request, and, if so, who filed it. While I imagine Take-Two and Rockstar
00:52aren't exactly keen to have development builds of their game online, there's nothing to suggest
00:57that either party was behind it. But of course, once something is on the internet, it's there for
01:02good, so it's very likely that this build of GTA 4 will continue to be explored for years to come.
