00:02The Guardian newspaper reported in April that Scotland Yard had been in talks about using
00:09Palantir's artificial intelligence technology to automate intelligence analysis in criminal
00:16investigations. The deal was recently blocked by the Mayor because of a lack of a procurement plan
00:24and value for money concerns. Although the force said the procurement process was conducted using
00:30the same framework as several other government departments and forces that already use Palantir
00:36and was applied diligently at every stage. Founded by tech magnate Peter Thiel, a prominent donor to
00:44US President Donald Trump, Palantir holds contracts with other UK public sector bodies and the
00:50Metropolitan Police said the decision to stop the deal going ahead prevents it from using technology
00:56already available to the NHS, Ministry of Defence and other police forces. It also argued that bringing
01:02in such technology is crucial at a time when a financial shortfall means it faces reducing the
01:09workforce. The force said without new technology delivered apace, it would be forced to make further
01:15tough choices that cannot avoid reducing officer numbers. It is understood that Sir Sadiq expects to
01:21speak to the government about whether a company's ethics should be considered in procurement processes.
