00:01Students in U.S. schools are performing worse academically than they were a decade ago,
00:05according to a recent study conducted by Stanford University's Educational Opportunity Project.
00:10From New York, our correspondent Henry Camelo has more.
00:15In free fall, that's the state of basic education in the United States,
00:21according to the most recent study from Stanford University,
00:24which determined that American students are earning lower grades than they were 10 years ago.
00:32Between 2015 and 2025, math scores fell by 70% in the analyzed districts,
00:40while reading scores dropped by 83%.
00:44Do you think that the cell phone, using the cell phone, the tablets,
00:48watching too much TV would be part of the problem?
00:52I think so would be part of the problem, because it brainwashes people to not do what they're supposed to
00:59do in class,
01:00and their brain is focused on social media and stuff.
01:03The report characterizes the situation as a learning recession,
01:09one that began before the pandemic, but was exacerbated by school closures and remote learning,
01:16which, according to experts, led young people to make greater use of social media.
01:23There are several factors.
01:25I think one of them is social media.
01:28Social media are playing a crucial role in our teenagers.
01:34If you think about it, most of them are trying to be influencers,
01:41and that's easy money, if you want to call it like that.
01:50And they are just trying to leave the studies behind.
01:54That's a trend that's not only in the States, I think it's everywhere.
01:58Among other causes, the report cites increased school absenteeism,
02:04excessive use of mobile devices, and a raise in mental health issues.
02:09However, for parents, there are other key factors.
02:12For example, like immigration kids, like parents cannot speak very well English,
02:19and then they have like English, for example, English and the Spanish teacher in the school,
02:27they can get the help, like me.
02:29The study also revealed that children within the immigrant community
02:34face greater difficulties in passing their academic subjects.
02:39Right here, we don't have the traditional family anymore.
02:42If you want to say it like that, like when some of the household stays with the kids,
02:49that's not happening anymore because of the financial situation.
02:55Like a father and a mother, they need to go to work
02:58because they need to cover all the expenses that is going on here.
03:02So all the kids are left behind, pretty much are on their own.
03:06The research also indicates that low students' performance may be attributed
03:12to an education law replaced in 2015 that mandated the measurement of academic progress.
03:20However, critics of this law denounced that some schools lowered their standards
03:26in order to demonstrate better results to retain federal funding
03:30without ever accounting for the human costs this would entail in the long run.
