00:00:59Just about you missed that about you got eliminated the round before the Colorado power play is just one for
00:01:06five in the series.
00:01:08So he tells you're not getting a lot of chances Vegas disciplined.
00:01:11What about the abs power play especially with my car coming back tonight?
00:01:14Yeah, well with my car back he helps in every single way the breakouts and zone entries.
00:01:19That's 80 90 percent of your power play.
00:01:22If you can't get things set up he helps it.
00:01:24But once they get set up he spreads the ice.
00:01:26He's so good mobility wise moving across the blue line.
00:01:29Creating shooting lanes but he also plays with deception.
00:01:32He can fake create stoppages find the open man which opens up seams.
00:01:38You right now they're playing four on four.
00:01:40You know you've got to establish a point shot and kill McCart does everything for Colorado on this power play.
00:01:45Yeah, I just keep getting back to the fact that I don't care who's on the power play.
00:01:49You got to shoot the puck.
00:01:50I see so many power plays just kill the clock by moving the puck around the perimeter and not really
00:01:55going to get establishing a point shot.
00:01:57You have to establish a point shot.
00:01:59You have to make him respect the shot coming from the point and everything else forms after that.
00:02:04But without McCart in there they just like PK said they're just playing four and four down low there and
00:02:09with no threat whatsoever.
00:02:12So I think McCart is obviously going to be a huge factor coming back on the park.
00:02:15Looks so nice, right?
00:02:16You're snapping it around, passing it around the perimeter.
00:02:19But just don't score any goals.
00:02:20Flash and dash.
00:02:21Vegas wasn't even moving there.
00:02:22They were just standing still.
00:02:23Rolling four lines.
00:02:24You need to go first line.
00:02:25We've got Jack Eichel getting a point.
00:02:27Yes.
00:02:27Feel good about that one?
00:02:28Yes.
00:02:28Book it.
00:02:29All right.
00:02:30What's Naz Khadri been up to you guys?
00:02:32I don't know.
00:02:33Khadri likes to put pucks on net.
00:02:35He's having just under three shots a game.
00:02:37Don't like it.
00:02:38You don't like it?
00:02:38Not even with a car back?
00:02:39No.
00:02:40He's got to hit the net though.
00:02:41That's three shots on goal.
00:02:43Not three shot attempts.
00:02:44I don't know, man.
00:02:45With those trees back there.
00:02:46I don't know if he's going to get through the forest.
00:02:48Carter Hart save.
00:02:49This is always a good one because you know the abs are going to fire a lot of shots at
00:02:53it.
00:02:54Yeah.
00:02:55I'm going to say it.
00:02:57No.
00:02:58No.
00:02:58Doesn't get 28 a half save.
00:03:00No.
00:03:01And then total goal.
00:03:02Wow.
00:03:03It's coming down, Lee.
00:03:04Yes, you've been saying that.
00:03:05All of that.
00:03:05It's going to come on down.
00:03:06Five and a half.
00:03:07You going under that mess?
00:03:07I'm going under again tonight.
00:03:09Three, two, three.
00:03:09Yeah, Wedgwick's playing great.
00:03:10Carter Hart's playing great.
00:03:12I mean, these are shots you're not stopping, guys.
00:03:14I don't care who you are.
00:03:15On DraftKings Sportsbook, we care who you are.

00:03:26All right.
00:03:27Final thoughts here, guys.
00:03:29Getting ready.
00:03:30We're at the Haber Series, or we have a verge of a sweep?
00:03:32Yeah, well, for Vegas, you cannot afford to stop hitting.
00:03:35Get on the body.
00:03:36Get physical.
00:03:37You'll like the result at the end.
00:03:38Yeah, it's a must-win for Colorado.
00:03:40There's nothing more you can say.
00:03:41You've got to go and win a hockey game.
00:03:42Sean Ray and Emily, coming up on the other side from Vegas.
00:03:51Colorado will head to Vegas, now 2-0.
00:03:55Vegas stunningly comes here at Winspace.
00:03:58Stinks for sure right now, but tomorrow we'll fly to Vegas and we'll regroup.
00:04:01Maybe getting on the road is exactly what they need.
00:04:04You're not giving up on your season because all of a sudden you lost two games in the playoffs.
00:04:08There's still lots of hockey to be played.
00:04:10It's a seven-game series for a reason, but we've got to start with one in Vegas.
00:04:15Tonight, low Western Conference final shifts to Vegas for game three.
00:04:20Our guys know what to do.
00:04:22They're going to be better the next game.
00:04:24We're going to have to be better.
00:04:25We are going to play as fast as we possibly can while making all the right decisions.
00:04:29It's a very hard team we're playing against.
00:04:31We know that.
00:04:31We know they're going to come with even more next game, and we've got to be ready for that.
00:04:35With McCarr out, that might be what has given Vegas a little bit more of an advantage.
00:04:40This is still a team that's got enough firepower to win games in the playoffs.
00:04:44We know how hard it is to win.
00:04:45Credit to our group.
00:04:46It really feels like we're playing for each other.
00:04:48How important is it to not get caught up in how great the situation is?
00:04:52I guarantee you, we won't.
00:04:59You're watching the Stanley Cup playoffs on ESPN, presented by GEICO.
00:05:03Tonight from Las Vegas, game three of the Western Conference Final between Colorado and Vegas.
00:05:09The Golden Knights return home, leading the series two games tonight after winning the first two games in Denver.
00:05:16The Avs led game two, one to nothing, after a first period goal by Ross Colton.
00:05:22But that was all they got.
00:05:23Jack Eichel started the Vegas comeback with a second period tally.
00:05:27Ivan Barbashev scored twice in the third period.
00:05:31Vegas prevailed three to one.
00:05:34In the Eastern Conference Final, Carolina won on home ice in overtime last night to even the series and one
00:05:42win apiece.
00:05:43Game three is tomorrow night in Montreal on TNT.
00:05:49Good evening, everybody, and welcome.
00:05:51I'm Sean McDonnell, along with Ray Ferraro.
00:05:53Delighted to have you with us.
00:05:54Good news for both sides as we get ready for game three.
00:05:58For Vegas, they'll get their captain, Mark Stone, back after he missed the last five games in these playoffs.
00:06:04And, Ray, for Colorado, Cale McCarr, one of the great defensemen of all time, in the opinion of many,
00:06:10returns and makes his first appearance of this series for the Avalanche.
00:06:14Both teams are really excited about getting these two great players back.
00:06:17But down 2-0 in the series, Colorado gets a boost of believability and energy with the return of Cale
00:06:25McCarr.
00:06:25They have just three goals in the series.
00:06:27And when McCarr's out of the lineup, everybody else has to chew up those 27 or 8 minutes that he
00:06:33plays.
00:06:34He changes just about everything dramatically for Colorado.
00:06:38The way they exit the zone, the way that he can get the puck quickly up to the forwards so
00:06:43they can get it in motion.
00:06:44And on the power play, he gets pucks through to the net.
00:06:47Where Vegas has blocked 39 shots, McCarr should be a real advantage for the Avalanche.
00:06:53As for the Golden Knights, up 2-0 in the series to get their captain, Mark Stone, back.
00:06:58I don't know that there's a player that leans heavily more on their hockey IQ than Mark Stone in the
00:07:03league.
00:07:03A tremendous player who might not dazzle you, but he does it in all facets of the game.
00:07:08Power play, penalty killing.
00:07:10He's going to play at 5-on-5 in a regular shift.
00:07:12They're thrilled to get him back, and they hope to take a stranglehold in this series.
00:07:16They're happy to have him, particularly on the power play.
00:07:18All three of his goals in this postseason have come a man up.
00:07:22Big difference, Ray, in the first two games in Denver.
00:07:25The top line for Vegas, as we just saw in the Game 2 recap, did its job in both games.
00:07:30The top line for Colorado has done very little.
00:07:34And as much as we can talk about depth and, oh, look at this third line and that fourth line,
00:07:38your top guys have to carry the mail for you.
00:07:40And certainly for Colorado in the first two games, Nathan McKinnon and Marty Natchez just have not been able to
00:07:47do it.
00:07:47McKinnon has just four shots on goal.
00:07:50He's been stymied in a head-to-head matchup for the most part against Jack Eichel.
00:07:54He's looked frustrated at times.
00:07:56Marty Natchez took two penalties on the same play.
00:07:59He's been a zero factor in the first two games of the series.
00:08:02He's been on the outside.
00:08:04He's not had many scoring chances.
00:08:06And for somebody that had 100 points, both he and McKinnon have to get on track.
00:08:11Maybe McCarr gives him a little bit of room to create.
00:08:14As for Vegas, this top line was tremendous.
00:08:16They were patient in both games, I thought.
00:08:20Dorofaev scored on the power play in the first game, a beautiful feed from Marner.
00:08:23But in game two, it was their third period that really turned the tide.
00:08:28Jack Eichel's first goal, and he called it in a million days, tied the game at one.
00:08:32And then two goals by Ivan Barbashev locked it up.
00:08:35This line has been better than Colorado's top line.
00:08:39They look, with the addition of Stone, to try and put this to a 3-0 Vegas lead.
00:08:44Colorado 3-1 on the road in this postseason.
00:08:48The Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on home ice.
00:08:52The opening face-off of game three, shortly from Las Vegas.
00:08:56I'm the one in the arena, you'll remember the night.
00:09:03So it's here, here for the people.
00:09:07Are you not in a town?
00:09:10I'm the one, remember my night.
00:09:18All right, the scene in Las Vegas.
00:09:20You know, I've never been to the city.
00:09:22I heard great things about it, though.
00:09:23Sounds like a good time.
00:09:25And they put an unbelievable show on the ice before the game ever starts.
00:09:30And then, of course, great atmosphere as well.
00:09:31Very excited to see the game tonight with Mark Messier and P.K. Subban.
00:09:34I'm Steve Levy.
00:09:35The major news tonight is the return of Cale McCarr for the Avs.
00:09:38P.K., your thoughts on his return?
00:09:40Yeah, he's going to help them in all facets of the game,
00:09:42specifically moving pucks out of their zone, but also at the end of games.
00:09:46We saw them, Vegas, tilt the ice.
00:09:48Having them on the ice in those key moments, in all key moments,
00:09:51is going to really help them in this game.
00:09:53Vegas gets their captain, Mark Stoneback.
00:09:55Yeah, he does so many things well for the Vegas Golden Knights.
00:09:58The leader, his hockey IQ, penalty kill, good stick, scores big goals, power play.
00:10:05What an addition coming back when they're already up to nothing.
00:10:07Doesn't look impressive, but he just gets it done.
00:10:09He just gets it done.
00:10:10Yeah, exactly.
00:10:10He just scores important goals.
00:10:12Yes, he does.
00:10:13I've got my quote on Mark.
00:10:15And McCarr looks impressive.
00:10:16He does everything well.
00:10:17He's beautiful.
00:10:19Unbelievable hockey game coming up.
00:10:20Get ready for game three from Vegas.
00:10:35Vegas Golden Knights taking the ice here at the Fortress.
00:10:39One of the loudest arenas in the National Hockey League.
00:10:44And as usual, a full-scale Las Vegas production greets them.
00:10:58We're ready for the National Anthem.
00:11:02Here's public address announcer Bruce Cusick.
00:11:05Ladies and gentlemen, earlier this week, the Las Vegas community lost an icon.
00:11:12Kyle Busch was known for his passion, intensity, and love for racing.
00:11:18Kyle's impact on motorsports, the Las Vegas community, and the fans who followed him will
00:11:25never be forgotten.
00:11:27Please join us in a moment of silence in remembrance of Kyle Busch.
00:11:43Thank you.
00:11:44Thank you.
00:11:45Thank you.
00:11:47Thank you.
00:11:47Thank you.
00:11:48Fans, please rise and remove your caps for the National Anthem.
00:11:51Performed tonight by Golden Pipes, Cardinal Johnson.
00:12:01Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
00:12:12What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
00:12:21Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
00:12:31O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
00:12:41And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
00:12:51Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
00:13:00O'er Satan's that star-spangled banner yet wave

00:16:14Уфт into the neutral zone and touched in by Kadri.
00:16:19Kadri moves from the middle of the third line up onto the left side with Brock Nelson.
00:16:23Nelson's one of those guys as well, Sean.
00:16:24He's got to get going.
00:16:26Colorado needs more from their big boys.
00:16:30There is Kale McCarr, and certainly there's been much talked about his absence and what it means.
00:16:35In warm-up, he was pretty ginger as he moved around the ice, shot the puck.
00:16:40They say there's no challenge for him to shoot,
00:16:43and it's going to be the contact that he's going to have to take.
00:16:46He took a bump from Barbashev, no surprise, on his very first touch of the puck.
00:16:52Nick Waugh and Sissons were to take the faceoff.
00:16:57They'll have to wait a moment.
00:16:58There's some sparring at the side of the faceoff circle.
00:17:02And Waugh moves into the middle of this line.
00:17:04It's his natural position in the middle of the ice.
00:17:07With Nachuskan on the right and Colton on the left.
00:17:11McCarr's been skating for several days.
00:17:14Coach Bednar says he's shot the puck well.
00:17:16They don't think there'll be any impact on his shooting skills.
00:17:20Here's Ross Colton.
00:17:22And the shot right on net and stopped by Hart.
00:17:26And again pushing and shoving.
00:17:28This time it's Sissons and Colton.
00:17:31Two of the feistier players on these two teams.
00:17:37Here's that first touch.
00:17:38McCarr fans on the puck.
00:17:40And when he looks down, he gets run into by Barbashev.
00:17:43Barbashev's had a tremendous series.
00:17:45Had the two goals and an assist in the second game.
00:17:49Seven hits.
00:17:50Leading Vegas with now 75 hits.
00:17:53But you see that you can practice all you want.
00:17:55Because you're out there by yourself.
00:17:57One little bobble of the puck.
00:17:59And then McCarr takes the hit.
00:18:00Probably a good thing.
00:18:01He takes it.
00:18:02Now he can take a breath and go, oh, I've withstood that hit.
00:18:06Now on to the next one.
00:18:08McCarr clearly was not himself in the second round series against Minnesota.
00:18:14Which they won in five games.
00:18:15Even though he was not at 100%.
00:18:18He did not have a point in the last four games against the Wild.
00:18:21That's the longest pointless drought of his playoff career.
00:18:25Deegan Colasar played it into the neutral zone.
00:18:28Brent Burns tried to send it back.
00:18:30It was blocked by Nick Dowd.
00:18:32This is the fourth line for Vegas with Dowd between Colasar and Smith.
00:18:36A very physical group.
00:18:38Colasar to the back wall.
00:18:39Couldn't possess it.
00:18:40Moved along by Josh Manson.
00:18:42Here's Jack Drury dumping it in from center ice.
00:18:45And the Colorado fourth line goes on.
00:18:48In on the four check.
00:18:49Logan O'Connor still on.
00:18:50Now a take away.
00:18:52McKinnon stopped at point blank range.
00:18:54Then threw it back at the net.
00:18:55And that one stopped by Hart as well.
00:18:58Another great chance for Nathan McKinnon.
00:19:02Who scored 53 in the regular season to lead the league.
00:19:06Still looking for his first in this series.
00:19:09And then Landis Goggs' shot is deflected out of the rink by Rasmus Anderson.
00:19:16Colorado's got the first four shots of the game.
00:19:18And as he has in the first two, Carter Hart has been exceptional.
00:19:21McKinnon will come right off the bench.
00:19:23You see him in the middle of the ice.
00:19:25And when there's an errant pass behind Dowd, McKinnon's able to grab it.
00:19:30And he wants to go quickly on the glove side to Hart.
00:19:33Hart has been just that much better than Wedgwood in the first two games.
00:19:37He's been tremendous to give a backbone to the Vegas Golden Knights.
00:19:42Getting 53 goals, 127 points in the regular season.
00:19:46The point total was third.
00:19:48Behind Connor McKinnon and Nikita Kucharov.
00:19:51Off the dasher and down the Landis Goggs.
00:19:53Centering track blocked by Eichel.
00:19:56He's a terrific player in all zones.
00:19:58He's in the offensive end now.
00:20:02Eichel started that comeback in game two with a third period goal.
00:20:06I misspoke at the top of the telecast.
00:20:08They had three goals all of the third period.
00:20:09They had their fourth, third goal comeback of these playoffs.
00:20:13Here's some speed and a chance and a penalty and a goal!
00:20:17Knocked in by Landis Goggs after Taves was stopped.
00:20:21Hannafin was going to go off for a penalty.
00:20:23But Landis Goggs scores and Colorado is first on the board.
00:20:32What an unbelievable effort from Devon Taves.
00:20:35Taves had a tough third period in game two.
00:20:38Here he goes, a hundred feet up the ice to skate right by Noah Hannafin.
00:20:43Hannafin can really skate, but Taves got the jump on him.
00:20:47And when Hart poked out that rebound, there's the captain, Gabe Landis Goggs, second to the series.
00:20:53He is the spine of the Colorado Avalanche.
00:20:57They have McCarr and the brilliance of him and McKinnon, but the spine of this team is their leader, and
00:21:03he's given them a 1-0 lead.
00:21:05And 14 years, their captain became the captain at age 19, the youngest in the history of the NHL.
00:21:12Now 33, his fifth goal in the playoffs.
00:21:17His other goal in this series is that six-on-four power play late in game one.
00:21:23That got them within 3-2 late.
00:21:26But Nick Dowd's empty net goal sealed the 4-2 win for Vegas.
00:21:30In game one, bouncing puck back of the line, Shea Theodore, Braden McNabb, back to Theodore.
00:21:37That one caroms into the left-wing corner and played up by Sam Malinsky.
00:21:42The Martin Natchez who couldn't move it through the neutral zone.
00:21:45Just one goal in the playoffs for Natchez.
00:21:50And now on the second line, crowd very quiet on the early score by Colorado.
00:22:00Home ice has not been advantaged in these playoffs.
00:22:02The road teams are 38-33 in this postseason.
00:22:07And before Carolina's win last night in Raleigh, the visiting teams had won the last seven games in the postseason.
00:22:15And it took overtime for the Hurricanes to get the win last night.
00:22:20Here's Stone up ahead to Tomas Hurdle and dumped in by Colton Sisson.
00:22:26Played on the right in the first two games.
00:22:28He's in the middle tonight.
00:22:30Between Hurdle and Stone, bouncing puck.
00:22:33Hurdle!
00:22:34Stopped by Wedgwood who looked over his left shoulder and was delighted to know the puck was not behind him.
00:22:43First chance for Wedgwood to handle.
00:22:45He's got the 1-0 lead as a result of a missed shot and a little poke by McKinnon.
00:22:51Taves the defenseman, just aggressively chases it down.
00:22:54And I think he probably caught Hannafin by surprise.
00:22:57As Hannafin was late to get over.
00:22:59And Landeskog's the next man up the ice.
00:23:02You see Barbashev a little bit late.
00:23:04And like the Eichel goal the other night, a play and a missed shot at one end quickly leads to
00:23:12a chance at the other and a goal.
00:23:13This time it's Gabe Landeskog and the Avs have that 1-0 lead.
00:23:18That 321 from Taves and McKinnon.
00:23:21Second assist of the series for both McKinnon and Taves.
00:23:25And a little less to carry for Taves tonight with McCarr back.
00:23:31Aggressively on the forecheck again.
00:23:33The Avs with the fourth line out.
00:23:36Drury between O'Connor and Kelly.
00:23:40For the most part this has been their most consistent line.
00:23:43They do their job and here they are grinding away behind the net again.
00:23:47They've only played about 9 1⁄2 minutes in the first two games.
00:23:51And as you say, Ray, it seems like every time they come out there for Colorado, you notice them.
00:23:55After the long squeeze, here's a 2-on-1.
00:23:59Eichel drops it back and turned it over to McCarr.
00:24:02Now 2-on-1 the other way.
00:24:04Kelly with Drury.
00:24:05McNabb is back.
00:24:06Drury trying to get it through and McNabb blocked the pass.
00:24:11Up and down they go.
00:24:13With nearly six minutes gone by.
00:24:16Either Kelly or Drury has got to shoot that puck.
00:24:19You're not going to get many 2-on-1s.
00:24:22Kelly had 21 goals this season.
00:24:24He's got it into that area.
00:24:26He's got to shoot it.
00:24:27Drury couldn't get it to him.
00:24:29McNabb sends it hard around.
00:24:32They tied up Marner.
00:24:34And Lekkonen got it out of the neutral zone.
00:24:37Lipped back in by Carlson.
00:24:41Lekkonen and Howden.
00:24:44Marner won the puck but turned it over to Landis Godd.
00:24:47He gave it back to Theodore.
00:24:49Snaps it in.
00:24:51And the VGK changing line six and a half minutes in.
00:24:58Back on at Anderson.
00:25:00Out on defense with Hannafin.
00:25:02They were rock solid through the first two games.
00:25:05Both plus three in the games in Denver.
00:25:09Best on either team along with Eichel.
00:25:14Burns turned it to Coghlan.
00:25:17Cole Smith locked it in by Dowd.
00:25:21Long time Washington capital who came over at the trade deadline.
00:25:25What a move by Manson.
00:25:26And a beautiful pass to Natchez.
00:25:29He centers one and they score.
00:25:33Nassim Khadri makes it two to nothing.
00:25:46Yeah, that's not Kale McCarr.
00:25:48That's Josh Manson back behind the Colorado net.
00:25:51What an unbelievable move.
00:25:52And his head's up the whole way.
00:25:54The first moment of the series for Marty Natchez to make an impact.
00:25:59He gets inside the defense.
00:26:02He spent the first two games out near the boards.
00:26:04He drives into the middle.
00:26:06And Khadri, who is on the wing tonight.
00:26:08The first time in the series he started there.
00:26:11He takes the pass from Natchez.
00:26:13And Khadri can shoot the puck.
00:26:15He beats hard up over the shoulder.
00:26:17And this is as good a start as Colorado could hope for.
00:26:20Now the Vegas Golden Knights have to chip their way back into it.
00:26:24The third of the playoffs, first to the series for the 35-year-old Khadri.
00:26:28The big part of their Stanley Cup title in 2022.
00:26:34They couldn't afford to keep him.
00:26:36He signed with Calgary and got traded by the Flames back to Colorado
00:26:41at the trade deadline this season.
00:26:44What a start for the Avs.
00:26:46The line changes seem to have made a difference.
00:26:49Natchez and Manson assisting at 7-0-3.
00:26:53That's 11 assists now in the playoffs for Natchez.
00:26:58And this is 12th game.
00:26:59I think the way that he picked up that assist, Sean,
00:27:02where he dives into the middle of the ice,
00:27:04that might let him relax a little.
00:27:07Drury threw it in front, hoping for a tip from Logan O'Connor.
00:27:13Hannafin around the boards slowly.
00:27:17Barbashev couldn't move it out.
00:27:18Kelly got it back, thrown toward the net by O'Connor.
00:27:24And then Malinsky had trouble with the pass at the line.
00:27:28They'll regroup.
00:27:29Shots on goal are 8-1 in favor of Colorado.
00:27:36Carlson in on the 4-10.
00:27:40Avalanche taking this crowd out of the game very early.
00:27:44McKinnon stopped at the line by McNabb.
00:27:47Now Carlson trying to shove it through.
00:27:53Tags gets help from Howden, who lost the puck to Kelly.
00:27:57Now Landis Gogg.
00:27:59For Makar on the move.
00:28:00Centers one.
00:28:02It went through Landis Gogg.
00:28:03Carlson nudged it out.
00:28:052-on-2 for Vegas.
00:28:07Marner with Howden.
00:28:08Marner out in front.
00:28:10Howden couldn't tip it.
00:28:12Thrown toward the net from the wall by Theodore.
00:28:15If Howden could have tipped it, he had a wide open net.
00:28:18Now he has it again down low.
00:28:21McKinnon up the wall.
00:28:23Coghlan couldn't keep it in.
00:28:26Landis Gogg lost it at the red line.
00:28:28Up and down they go here in the first half of the first period.
00:28:32Locked down by Smith.
00:28:34Smith trying to sidestep Burns.
00:28:37Couldn't, but it's picked up and dropped back to Smith by Dowd.
00:28:41This shot was hampered.
00:28:44Skated up and there's a trip.
00:28:46Manson was upended and he's going off is Cole Smith.
00:28:54And he doesn't like the call.
00:28:56But it seemed to be pretty clear cut.
00:28:59So Vegas already down 2-0 will be shorthanded.
00:29:06Now the first 10 minutes of this period has gone Colorado's way.
00:29:09Start to finish.
00:29:10They have a hefty shot advantage.
00:29:13They'll get the game's first power play on the Cole Smith trip.
00:29:18And a 2-0 lead.
00:29:20First it's the captain, Gabe Landis Gogg.
00:29:22Off the Devon Taves rush.
00:29:24And then Marty Natchez to Nazem Kadri.
00:29:272-0 outs.
00:29:34Colorado leading 2-0 and going to the power play.
00:29:37Game drivers are brought to us by Geico.
00:29:39Off the rush and up the ice quickly come the Colorado Avalanche.
00:29:44The Vegas Golden Knights have had an advantage the first two games.
00:29:47Devon Taves changes that early as he beats Hannafin up the ice.
00:29:51Landis Gogg puts it in the net.
00:29:52What an amazing move and pass by Josh Manson.
00:29:56Marty Natchez's first moment in the series where he creates with his feet.
00:30:01Kadri makes it 2-0.
00:30:02The abs on the power play.
00:30:04It's their first one in the series with Cale McCarr.
00:30:06Sean, the big advantage for the abs here.
00:30:09McCarr has a tremendous ability to shoot the puck around traffic.
00:30:15Get it to the net.
00:30:16Even with him for most of the year, they were 27th on the power play.
00:30:20That shot right on by Natchez.
00:30:23In this series, they're 1-5.
00:30:25Their only power play goal was that 6-on-4.
00:30:29When they're on the power play in, they pulled the goalie.
00:30:32Landis Gogg-Golden made it 3-2 for Jared Bednar.
00:30:36Game 1 in Denver.
00:30:38So, Colorado has moved their power play around as well.
00:30:42Nick Waugh is on this first unit.
00:30:44He'll take the face-offs on the right side, but his job is the net front.
00:30:48And this is a little bit of a change for them.
00:30:50Landis Gogg on the face-off with Sissons.
00:30:55They had two power play opportunities in Game 2.
00:30:58Didn't have a shot on goal.
00:30:59The power play brought to you by Pepsi.
00:31:03McKinnon, the entry.
00:31:06Now Wong, former Vegas Golden Knight.
00:31:08Six years here.
00:31:10Natchez lost the puck.
00:31:12Then he falls down.
00:31:14Here's a shorthand chance.
00:31:16Dowd, Sissons, and a great stop.
00:31:18Banned it out of the air by Dowd.
00:31:22Vegas already four shorthanded goals in these playoffs.
00:31:27And Colorado's offside.
00:31:30And the Avs gave up 13 shorthanded goals in the regular season.
00:31:35That was most of the league.
00:31:37I had a coach that once said hockey's a slippery game played on ice.
00:31:41Man, I'm not sure where Natchez lost the shoe here.
00:31:44But you'll see him stumble.
00:31:45And then Dowd's got the opportunity into the middle of the ice to Sissons.
00:31:51Dowd will knock it back out of the air right here.
00:31:54And McCarr ends up back behind Wedgwood to make the stop.
00:31:58Almost a disastrous turn for Colorado.
00:32:01And Dowd and Sissons almost cash.
00:32:05And it's 15 on the Avalanche power play.
00:32:08Leading 2-0.
00:32:09More than midway through the first period.
00:32:13Vegas Golden Knights have won four games in a row in these playoffs.
00:32:17The last two in round two against Anaheim to win in six.
00:32:20The first two in this series.
00:32:23They have struggled on the penalty kill lately.
00:32:32They're only minus two who have been shorthanded in these playoffs.
00:32:36Howden, three of the four shorthanded goals.
00:32:39This ties the all-time record for most in a single postseason with seven others.
00:32:45Wayne Gretzky, one of them.
00:32:48McKinnon creeping closer out in front.
00:32:51And one-touched wide by Landeskog.
00:32:55Now Kadri, back to the line.
00:32:57McCarr.
00:33:00One shot on goal.
00:33:01The power play.
00:33:02One more than he had the other night.
00:33:03Now two on the redirect by Natchez.
00:33:06Off a good feed by McCarr.
00:33:08Already a difference maker.
00:33:10Here's a one-timer.
00:33:11Kadri blocked by Hannafin.
00:33:16And a pedaling.
00:33:22That's going to be Kadri for a high stick.
00:33:26We'll take a quick peek if there's any blood on Eichel.
00:33:29I don't see any.
00:33:36Colorado penalty.
00:33:37Number 91, two minutes, high sticking.
00:33:42Eichel will make the good play to deflect the puck.
00:33:44And as Kadri's going for the loose puck to turn,
00:33:47he's going to catch Eichel in the side of the face.
00:33:50So Vegas will get a power play here in three seconds.
00:33:55McCarr's had to be tested.
00:33:56He dives into the two-on-one
00:33:59and then ends up being in the right place to knock away Dowd.
00:34:02One thing I would say on that last power play,
00:34:04he had two chances, McCarr did, to one-time the puck.
00:34:07He did not one-time it either.
00:34:10Opportunity.
00:34:11And with a shoulder, maybe he's not comfortable yet
00:34:14taking that shot.
00:34:22John Tortorella has four players on there
00:34:27that are all a part of the first power play unit.
00:34:29Marner down low!
00:34:30Wedgwood, another big stop on Tomas Hurdle.
00:34:35Well, some speculation yesterday between games
00:34:40that Jared Bednar might make a goaltending change
00:34:43and go to Mackenzie Blackwood.
00:34:45He felt like Wedgwood played well enough in the first two games,
00:34:48and he's been terrific tonight.
00:34:50Three shots on goal, two grade-A scoring chances.
00:34:54They call the Colorado crease the lumber yard.
00:34:57Blackwood and Wedgwood,
00:34:58and Wedgwood's able to squeeze the hurdle chance
00:35:01up against his elbow and body.
00:35:03Here's the full Vegas power play.
00:35:06One for six in the series.
00:35:07Dorothea had the goal in game one.
00:35:11Went 0 for four in game two.
00:35:13That ended a streak of six straight games
00:35:15with a power play goal.
00:35:16Well, the longest such streak in playoff history
00:35:19for the Vegas Golden Knights.
00:35:21Eichel comes through Marner to Dorothea.
00:35:26Dorothea, the leading goal scorer in these playoffs
00:35:29with 10 for them a man up.
00:35:31Centering pass!
00:35:32Redirected wide by Hurdle.
00:35:34Stone is out there on the power play.
00:35:38Back of the line.
00:35:39Marner down low!
00:35:41Another stop by Wedgwood.
00:35:43As Stone was denied from close range.
00:35:46Stone made that quick pass out to Hurdle
00:35:48that Hurdle missed on in the slot,
00:35:50and then Stone with another opportunity quickly.
00:35:52You see how much he can help this Vegas power play.
00:35:56Here's Marner.
00:35:57Down low again!
00:35:59Dorothea!
00:36:00They score!
00:36:01It's waved off!
00:36:02Garrett Rake waves it off immediately.
00:36:05Crowd still celebrating.
00:36:11They're looking at replays on the bench.
00:36:15And the players are celebrating.
00:36:17They think this call is going to be changed.
00:36:22Dorothea says he knocked it in with his stick.
00:36:24They're back at the puck into the net.
00:36:26Therefore, we have no goal.
00:36:28The play is under review.
00:36:29Well, they think they've scored.
00:36:32Garrett Rake does not agree, at least not yet.
00:36:37A terrific passing play gets the puck to Dorothea.
00:36:41Now, I think on first view, he knocks that in with his glove.
00:36:45We'll take a look here as he punches it into the net.
00:36:53They'll get plenty looks at it.
00:36:54And let's bring in our rules expert, Dave Jackson.
00:36:58I know, Jax, you're just getting your first good looks at it, but what do you think?
00:37:02Oh, it is a stick.
00:37:04That looked like a stick there and not the glove.
00:37:06Right.
00:37:07What's important here is this is not a coach's challenge.
00:37:09This is a review by Toronto.
00:37:11They review the legality of every goal.
00:37:13So they're going to look at this, and they have the ability to overturn the goal if they feel that
00:37:17was off the stick.
00:37:18So they're going to take their time and get it right.
00:37:20It was definitely, if it hits his glove, I agree, it's no goal.
00:37:23That's that punching motion on the puck.
00:37:25But if it hits the stick, then we're going to have a goal overturned.
00:37:28That will be a goal allowed.
00:37:29Man, that was a great look, the second one our guys got.
00:37:32But Dorofeyev immediately said it was my stick.
00:37:36He was telling the guys in the crowd.
00:37:38And that next look, and the referees will get every angle they need to with the help of Jax mentions.
00:37:44But you're going to see it hit just below his glove.
00:37:47It's off the white tape of his stick as he bunts it in.
00:37:51It's also below the crease, or below the crossbar, to make that a legal goal.
00:37:58This will be Dorofeyev's power play goal.
00:38:00Oh, man, oh, man, this guy is not missed in the playoffs.
00:38:04This is the best view here.
00:38:07As he bunts this over top of Wedgwood.
00:38:12Well, the crowd is convinced.
00:38:15You're convinced.
00:38:16Jax is convinced.
00:38:17The officials and the replay center not yet convinced, apparently.
00:38:26But if it stands, it's his 11th goal to playoffs to lead all skaters by two over his teammate, Brett
00:38:32Howden.
00:38:33And it would be his fifth power play goal, one more than Uri Slavkovsky of Montreal, for the playoff lead.
00:38:44Some of the players on both sides now coming off the bench to start skating around and stay loose.
00:38:49As the review goes on, let's bring Dave Jackson back in.
00:38:56Sean, yeah, one other thing they'll be looking at here is, remember, it's the height of the crossbar off the
00:39:01stick.
00:39:01It's not the height of the player's shoulders.
00:39:02It goes directly in the net.
00:39:03It's the height of the crossbar, and from various angles, I mean, you can decide.
00:39:07It looks like it's blow-up.
00:39:08Other angles, it looks like it's above.
00:39:10So this is not an easy call for them.
00:39:12Here they come.
00:39:12We'll see.
00:39:13Here comes the call.
00:39:15After video review, the call on the ice stands.
00:39:18No ball.
00:39:19Well, it must be because of the thing you just mentioned, Jax, because it did look like it hit a
00:39:24stick.
00:39:26As I look at it, I thought this was good, obviously.
00:39:30He said it about four times.
00:39:32And so Dorofaev will knock this in.
00:39:37That's all, in my opinion, that's off the white tape of his stick.
00:39:43And then we'll get a look here at where the stick is.
00:39:49Wow.
00:39:49See, I think his stick is at the crossbar, and the part of the puck that's above the crossbar,
00:39:57now, I don't know, I don't think it, I think that's a good goal.
00:40:01It doesn't matter what I think.
00:40:03It's still 2-0 Colorado.
00:40:06Let's bring in Dave Jackson for his final thought.
00:40:09Jax, how would you summarize it?
00:40:11Well, as Ray says, it doesn't matter what we think.
00:40:14That is right at the crossbar.
00:40:16They said, that's what they were looking at for quite a while.
00:40:18They have a lot of angles.
00:40:20They determined it must have been above the crossbar.
00:40:22If it's at the crossbar, would it be a goal?
00:40:27Yes, at the crossbar.
00:40:29It's above the crossbar.
00:40:30It's no goal.
00:40:31So no goal.
00:40:33The power play continues for another 38 seconds.
00:40:40Marner down low, hoping for Eichel.
00:40:43It winds up with Devon Caves.
00:40:45Three shots on goal on this Vegas power play.
00:40:50Shots are already 11-5 for Colorado.
00:40:54Only five shots faced.
00:40:56Here's a breakaway for Drury.
00:40:58Shorthanded.
00:40:59Jeff Drury scores!
00:41:03Three-nothing Colorado.
00:41:07Everything going their way.
00:41:1941 seconds after the disallowed goal or overturned goal.
00:41:23A clearing attempt not quite caught at the blue line.
00:41:27And Jack Drury will run onto this puck.
00:41:31And he's got all kinds of room.
00:41:3360 feet of it.
00:41:34To think about what to do.
00:41:36He looks blocker side and then goes back the other way.
00:41:39Oh man, he banked it off of both posts.
00:41:42And in.
00:41:44And in ball arena, they have to watch both posts come into play
00:41:48before Jack Drury's shorthanded marker has made it three-nothing.
00:41:53Those folks back in Devon wondering,
00:41:56where were all those goals when the games were here in front of us?
00:42:00We would have cheered them, too.
00:42:02This is many goals three that they scored in the first two games combined.
00:42:07They're the highest scoring team in the regular season.
00:42:12And in the playoffs.
00:42:14They've held to just two on home ice.
00:42:16McHarr's back.
00:42:18Everything clicking.
00:42:20The goal taken down for Vegas.
00:42:23The Stanley Cup playoffs on ESPN are presented by Geico.
00:42:27It feels good to have a winning team.
00:42:28It feels good to Geico.
00:42:37During the break, the officials explaining the no goal to both coaches.
00:42:43We're going to bring back in Dave Jackson.
00:42:45Jax, we're told by the league that the goal is not a goal
00:42:51because it was directed in by the glove of Dorothea.
00:42:55Correct.
00:42:56That was the official answer.
00:42:59If it's too close to determine,
00:43:00if they cannot definitively prove that it didn't hit the glove,
00:43:04the call on the ice here is what counts.
00:43:06The referee said it was the glove.
00:43:07They could not determine it wasn't the glove.
00:43:09So the call on the ice stood directed in by the glove.
00:43:12Let me ask you this question.
00:43:14What if it hit part of his glove and part of the stick?
00:43:17No.
00:43:18Part of the glove is very specific.
00:43:20If it hits the glove, that's directed by the glove.
00:43:22Okay, so it doesn't matter if you've got a little stick on it
00:43:25as long as some of the glove hit it, it's no goal,
00:43:27and that's what they deemed.
00:43:29And then moments later, Jack Drury, the shorthanded goal,
00:43:33his third of the playoffs from Kelly and Tabes,
00:43:36already two assists for Devon Tabes.
00:43:39That's at 13-15.
00:43:43Both teams are at full strength now with six and a half to go
00:43:46in a very eventful first period.
00:43:52started to say only five shots on goal for Vegas,
00:43:55but Wedgwood has been a story here early.
00:43:57Here they come again.
00:43:59Kadri tried to center.
00:44:00Militsky throws it on net.
00:44:02And all of a sudden, it's Hart on his heels
00:44:05for one of the very few times lately.
00:44:08Going back to the regular season,
00:44:11Gulak played it in deeper.
00:44:13And they battle in the corner.
00:44:16Played out by Kadri,
00:44:18who has one of the goals.
00:44:23Carlson snapped it ahead.
00:44:25Taken back in by Natchez.
00:44:27Nelson heading to the net front.
00:44:29Kadri threw it to the side of the net.
00:44:32And it's skated off by Anderson,
00:44:34pestered from behind by Kadri
00:44:35and taken back by the check.
00:44:38Natchez.
00:44:38Now McCarr.
00:44:40He goes down,
00:44:41looking for somebody to pass to,
00:44:43but they were in the midst of a line change
00:44:45and there was nobody else in white
00:44:46in the offensive end.
00:44:49Michael.
00:44:51Taken back by Landisgaard.
00:44:53And now Lekkonen.
00:44:56Lekkonen moved up to the top line
00:44:58with McKinnon and Landisgaard.
00:45:01Landisgaard scored the first goal of the game.
00:45:05Now Eichel.
00:45:07Touched in by Barbashev.
00:45:09With three points in their winning game two.
00:45:11He was in on all three goals.
00:45:13Assisted on the Eichel goal.
00:45:15It started the third period comeback
00:45:17and then scored the other two.
00:45:21Ray, very rarely do you hear this building this quiet.
00:45:24I think they're stunned, Sean.
00:45:26They think it's 2-1.
00:45:28All of a sudden, it's not.
00:45:29Then instantly later, it's 3-0.
00:45:31Jack Drury did not have a shorthanded goal
00:45:34in the regular season.
00:45:35Colorado had only two shorties
00:45:38in the entire regular season.
00:45:40Tied for the fewest in the league
00:45:41with Boston and Seattle.
00:45:44Played out by Barbashev.
00:45:47Burns back on it.
00:45:50We're down to 425 to go in the opening period.
00:45:54Tomas Hurdle.
00:45:55His progress stopped by Manson.
00:45:58What a gorgeous assist on the second goal.
00:46:03Kuchuskin whacked it ahead.
00:46:05Hurdle won the puck along the wall from Burns.
00:46:08Now he's battling Wah behind the cage.
00:46:11Manson first there.
00:46:13Moved it ahead of the pitch by Coghlan.
00:46:15And icing is the call against Colorado.
00:46:21The quest continues.
00:46:23B-Dogs!
00:46:23B-Dogs!
00:46:24Go behind the scenes with the Buffalo Sabres
00:46:26as they go toe-to-toe with the Montreal Canadiens
00:46:29in an epic seven-game series.
00:46:31Let's go!
00:46:32Go!
00:46:32Go!
00:46:32Quest for the Stanley Cup
00:46:34only on NHL YouTube.
00:46:38John Hebert was the official.
00:46:39Went over and talked to John Tortorella on the bench
00:46:42and he told him,
00:46:42we don't have enough to overturn the call.
00:46:46So as the call as Jax mentioned
00:46:48was no goal on the ice.
00:46:50He told the Vegas bench,
00:46:51we don't have enough.
00:46:53With all the looks,
00:46:54we do not have enough to overturn.
00:46:57Since the call was no goal
00:47:00and it wasn't conclusive on the replay,
00:47:02the call stands.
00:47:03One-timer shot wide by Theodore.
00:47:07Now, Brett Houghton back to the line.
00:47:11Ray McNabb wristing through a crowd
00:47:13that never did get through.
00:47:15Manson managed to clear it out on the second try.
00:47:19Now McNabb,
00:47:20all-time Vegas franchise leader in games played
00:47:23and hits and blocked shots.
00:47:26More than 600 games in the regular season,
00:47:29more than 1,400 hits and blocked shots.
00:47:31That's a lot of damage.
00:47:33That's a hard way to go.
00:47:34It sure is.
00:47:36Don Tortorella loves him.
00:47:37Not the greatest skater,
00:47:39but always in the right place at the right time.
00:47:42NAB didn't play at all in the second period in game two,
00:47:45then returned third.
00:47:47Here's Landis Goggin again!
00:47:49And Hart the save.
00:47:51The different top line tonight
00:47:54with Lekanen alongside
00:47:56Landis Goggin and McKinnick.
00:47:58Two early goals for Colorado made it 2-0.
00:48:01Vegas thinks they cut the lead in half
00:48:03on Dorofaev's power play goal,
00:48:05but it's waved off.
00:48:07And then 40 seconds later,
00:48:09Jack Drury shorthanded.
00:48:11It's 3-0 Colorado.
00:48:19The story for Colorado remains the series debut of Kale McCarr.
00:48:23Now, after game two,
00:48:24Coach Derek Bednar said it's Kale's decision when he comes back.
00:48:28And what he meant by that was,
00:48:29this is a significant injury,
00:48:31one that's not going to heal completely,
00:48:32and Kale knows his body better than anybody.
00:48:36Kale is somebody who rehabs hard.
00:48:38They said nobody spent more time at the rink
00:48:40the last two weeks than him.
00:48:42And we often saw him at practices
00:48:43talking to the trainers
00:48:45about potential equipment tweaks.
00:48:47But guys, the biggest sign of faith
00:48:48is the fact that they only dress
00:48:50six defensemen in this game.
00:48:52They're not sheltering him at all.
00:48:54At some point, the player has to say
00:48:56to the medical team and then to the coaches,
00:48:59I'm good to go.
00:49:00Because nobody else can really know.
00:49:02And all the work he's done,
00:49:04there has to be a degree of confidence
00:49:06that he's like, yeah, I can go.
00:49:08Because the coach will ask you,
00:49:09can you go the whole night?
00:49:10Because they want to play everybody.
00:49:12All six.
00:49:12Not good.
00:49:13Drop to five.
00:49:14Landis Gock trying to cut to the net.
00:49:16His path blocked by Hannifin and Dowd.
00:49:19Leckinen got it back to the point.
00:49:21McCarr throws it in behind.
00:49:24McKinnon trying to shed Anderson.
00:49:26Anderson dropped his stick
00:49:27to try to avoid a penalty,
00:49:29but it didn't work.
00:49:30He's going to get called for one anyway.
00:49:32A hook.
00:49:34And another power play for Colorado.
00:49:43Oh, Anderson barking the whole way.
00:49:46They've got to be careful.
00:49:49This is some pretty good work
00:49:51below the goal line again by Colorado.
00:49:52I thought this was the strongest part
00:49:54of their game in Denver
00:49:55was below the line
00:49:56that they were able to create
00:49:58some offense.
00:49:59The stick is through the hands
00:50:01and whether he drops it or not,
00:50:03that's going to get called early.
00:50:04John Tortorella hates that.
00:50:06But that's a penalty
00:50:08that gets called quite frequently now.
00:50:10Anderson's in the box.
00:50:11It's the second Colorado power play.
00:50:13Remember, McCarr did not shoot
00:50:15a one-timer the first time.
00:50:17We'll see if they set one up this time.
00:50:20Comes to McKinnon.
00:50:21He played it back to McCarr.
00:50:24Landis Gaga knocked down in front of the net
00:50:26by McNabb.
00:50:27He's in the bumper spot.
00:50:29McCarr throws it on net.
00:50:31Nate just whacked it a rebound.
00:50:37McCarr goes sprawling face first
00:50:43to smother the puck.
00:50:44Two really good shots.
00:50:46And Landis Gaga is in the high slot,
00:50:49like right between the hash marks.
00:50:51McCarr shooting clear to the goal,
00:50:53but also through Landis Gaga.
00:50:57There he is, the wrister.
00:50:58Landis Gaga's right there.
00:50:59Oh, man, good save by Hart.
00:51:01Nate just wandering around
00:51:03if there's a rebound as well.
00:51:05And you can see quickly here,
00:51:08the puck's going to go through McCarr.
00:51:10He's going to open up room for McKinnon.
00:51:12This power play just became
00:51:14exponentially more dangerous.
00:51:17Something else for Vegas to deal with.
00:51:23Kadri back for McCarr.
00:51:25The right shot.
00:51:26Taves was from the left.
00:51:27That was an adjustment they had to make
00:51:28in the first two games.
00:51:29Kadri fanned.
00:51:31And then it hops over the stick of Landis Gaga.
00:51:332-10 in the period.
00:51:35Minute 20 on the power play.
00:51:37That went outside the line
00:51:38and then brought back in by McCarr.
00:51:41So a neutral zone face-off with 117.
00:51:45Jared Bednar's power play.
00:51:47Bednar, of course, in his avalanche.
00:51:51No, you can't lose this.
00:51:52You're down two.
00:51:52You lost them both at home.
00:51:54Now you've got to win four out of five.
00:51:55You've got to win a couple here.
00:51:57And the task got a little bit easier,
00:52:01if that's the right word, with McCarr back in.
00:52:03And then all of a sudden, everybody's in the right slot.
00:52:06And now you feel like a complete team.
00:52:09Mentally, emotionally, it has to be a big lift.
00:52:12You have McCarr back, twice a Norris Trophy winner.
00:52:16And a finalist again this year, one of the three finalists.
00:52:20Here's McKinnon with a minute on the power play.
00:52:26Here in the first period in Las Vegas battle right along the line.
00:52:34Sissons finally got it out for the VGK, taken back by Landis God.
00:52:39A minute and a half in the period, 40 seconds on the Anderson minor.
00:52:44McCarr's average more than a point per game in his playoff career.
00:52:49That puck went up high and hit Eichel when grabbing for his face.
00:52:52And now he goes off.
00:52:54A clearing attempt by the Vegas defense hit Eichel right in the face.
00:53:00He looks like he's okay, but man, that's going to smart.
00:53:03Snapped in from the red line by Burns.
00:53:05Stayed on the dasher for a bit.
00:53:07It comes down.
00:53:08Nelson drops it back.
00:53:09Burns passed up a shot.
00:53:11Taves.
00:53:11And it winds up in the corner.
00:53:14Under a minute to go in the period.
00:53:16Anderson about to come out of the penalty box.
00:53:21No sign of blood on Eichel with his helmet off on the Vegas bench.
00:53:27Here's Theodore with Vegas back at full strength.
00:53:31Hurdle goes down.
00:53:33Nelson collided with him.
00:53:35And there'll be a penalty here.
00:53:39And then Stone tried to go after Nelson.
00:53:42Now McNabb does.
00:53:43They'd be wise to back off even though they clearly didn't like the play by Nelson.
00:53:48They could desperately use a power play and they don't want to do anything to take that down.
00:53:59Colorado penalty.
00:54:01Number 11.
00:54:02Two minutes tripping.
00:54:05The leg, the right leg of Nelson clips through the, oh man, the leg of Hurdle fortunately is okay.
00:54:13That could have been bad.
00:54:15There's the clearing attempt.
00:54:16McNabb's clearing attempt hits Eichel right in the side of the face.
00:54:21Good news he's not.
00:54:22Cotney's also back on the ice for the power play here.
00:54:25Great.
00:54:26Two Vegas players went after Nelson after the leg check as if they thought it was dirty.
00:54:31Did you have a problem with it?
00:54:32No, I mean, nobody likes to see anyone get a knee-on-knee sort of play, but that's not an
00:54:39intentional play by Nelson.
00:54:40It's a tripping penalty for sure.
00:54:42So, a power play with 40 seconds in the period.
00:54:46Eichel is on the ice.
00:54:48We're at the top power play unit.
00:54:51Stone, Hurdle, Marner, and Dorothea.
00:54:55Five forwards out there.
00:54:57A blast by Dorothea.
00:54:59This block.
00:55:00They used five forwards on the power play for a lot of the season under Bruce Cassidy.
00:55:05Dury already has a shorthanded goal tonight.
00:55:08Turned it over.
00:55:10Two shorthanded goals in these playoffs for Colorado matching their regular season total.
00:55:16Lekkonen had had one in Game 3, Round 1 against Los Angeles in L.A.
00:55:23Down to 12 seconds in the period.
00:55:26Eichel with some speed.
00:55:27Cuts right to the net front.
00:55:29Stopped by Wedgwood.
00:55:31Great chance by Eichel.
00:55:33Eichel as he went all the way down low with a great chance in the final seconds.
00:55:41And Eichel looks up as he's entering the zone.
00:55:44Look, O'Connor's out wide.
00:55:46And Lekkonen is too far into the middle.
00:55:50Eichel right about here.
00:55:51He's like, whoa, I got a clean lane.
00:55:53He goes right between the two forwards, which is interesting.
00:55:56The Avalanche had two forwards on the same side of the ice.
00:56:00The defensemen were over on the other side.
00:56:03Eichel shot almost goes below Wedgwood's pad.
00:56:07He thought he got hooked.
00:56:08And that's why he was looking up in disbelief.
00:56:11And I think the crowd, as they saw the replay, agrees.
00:56:17As boos rained down.
00:56:24For 5.8 seconds.
00:56:27And it went over the stick of Eichel.
00:56:30Chased by Nachuskan.
00:56:34They came out ready to go.
00:56:36Did the Avs.
00:56:38With really their season on the line.
00:56:40No one's ever come back in the playoffs only four times.
00:56:44In the NHL playoffs.
00:56:45This is where he thinks there's a hook.
00:56:473-0 down.
00:56:48As the stick of Lekkonen gets caught in his pants, Eichel's going to go down and zip this puck.
00:56:55Wedgwood with the stop.
00:56:56He wanted a two that would have made that a five-on-three power play.
00:57:0117 shots on goal in the first period for the Avs.
00:57:04They're most in any period in these playoffs.
00:57:07Here's Steve Levy.
00:57:08All right, Sean.
00:57:09Thanks very much.
00:57:10Back here with P.K. Subban and Mark Messier.
00:57:13Is there enough to talk about in that first 20 minutes?
00:57:16Unbelievable.
00:57:17Yeah.
00:57:18I was going to, for my first time, I was going to juggle puck.
00:57:20All right.
00:57:20Let's set this up.
00:57:21You, me, Wedgwood.
00:57:22You're Dorofiev.
00:57:23Okay?
00:57:23Yeah.
00:57:24And this, to me, should have been a goal.
00:57:25I don't know what's going on here, but this is what happened.
00:57:28All right, here you go.
00:57:28He waits.
00:57:29He's patient.
00:57:30Look.
00:57:30Leaves.
00:57:31Here's another one.
00:57:32Put it in the wheelhouse.
00:57:32Don't hurt Mess.
00:57:33Yeah.
00:57:34Here you go.
00:57:34Mess, you're doing it.
00:57:35Horrible.
00:57:35Mess, why don't you go back there?
00:57:37One more chance.
00:57:37One more chance.
00:57:38Come on, Leaves.
00:57:39Yeah!
00:57:41Now, that could have hit the thumb of your glove.
00:57:43It did not hit the thumb.
00:57:44If it hits the thumb.
00:57:45Hold on.
00:57:46The big thumb right there of your glove.
00:57:47It's below the crossbar.
00:57:49Definitely.
00:57:49At least that crossbar height.
00:57:51And it doesn't hit his glove.
00:57:53I don't see where it hits his glove.
00:57:54Mess had no goal the whole time.
00:57:56Of course, it was no goal.
00:57:57No, what are you talking about?
00:57:58What about the triple right at the end of the pinnacle?
00:58:00Right off his thumb.
00:58:01Clearly off his thumb.
00:58:02Let me see.
00:58:04Where?
00:58:04Where?
00:58:05Oh.
00:58:06Yeah, what about the high stick?
00:58:07Don't worry about Dorothea.
00:58:08Where does it hit his glove?
00:58:10Where?
00:58:10Where is it touching?
00:58:11I see white tape behind that.
00:58:13Yeah.
00:58:14And so, it's a crazy sequence.
00:58:16And we'll go through it.
00:58:17But that goes from Vegas is down 2-1.
00:58:20Yeah.
00:58:21To now they're down 3-0.
00:58:22Because Drury scores the shorthanded goal after that.
00:58:25Let's turn the page.
00:58:26We've got to move on.
00:58:26Oh, we'll turn the page.
00:58:27We've got to turn the page.
00:58:28Yeah, but what about the triple and Eichel at the end by Leckon?
00:58:30Are we going to turn the page on that?
00:58:31Yeah, we've got to turn the page.
00:58:32Okay.
00:58:33Dave Jackson standing next to us now.
00:58:34Great job, Mess.
00:58:36Okay.
00:58:36Coming up, we'll break it all down for you.
00:58:38What a first period.
00:58:39The Expedia first intermission report is going to be even better.
00:58:49You're watching the Stanley Cup playoffs at ESPN.
00:58:52Presented by Geico from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
00:58:56The home fans glum after that first period.
00:58:593-0 Colorado.
00:59:02Positive connections brought to us by ServiceNow and by Ray Ferraro.
00:59:06What an amazing start on the road here for the Avalanche game.
00:59:09Landis Dog off the Devontaev's rush.
00:59:12A great play by Manson to Natchez and Nazem Khadri made it 2-0.
00:59:17The Golden Knights think it's 2-1 on the Dorofae of power play goal,
00:59:21but ruled inconclusive on the ice after it had been waved off for a puck,
00:59:27pushing it in with his hand.
00:59:29Still 2-0, and 40 seconds later,
00:59:32Jack Drury, his first shorthanded goal of his playoff career,
00:59:35gives the Avalanche a 3-0 lead.
00:59:38Hard to imagine it could have been much better, Ray, in that first period.
00:59:42Such a difference with Cale McCarr on the ice, obviously.
00:59:45One of the great players in the world,
00:59:47and he wasn't showing any signs of rust or that shoulder bothering him in the first period.
00:59:52No, he really didn't, and you can see McCarr comes in.
00:59:55Everybody else gets to slot back into their more comfortable roles,
00:59:59and the Avalanche put a great start together and a great period.
01:00:03Now it's up to the Golden Knights to get back into the game.
01:00:06They're on the power play to begin the period.
01:00:08Brock Nelson with another minute 5 to surface, tripping penalty late in the first.
01:00:13It gets moved back to Marner, tipped in!
01:00:15A power play goal by Mark Stone!
01:00:18The captain returns!
01:00:35Strong play by Dorofiev to get this puck off the wall, and the hurdle finds Marner.
01:00:41This is all vision by Marner as he looks through the traffic and the slap pass through Parker Kelly's right
01:00:49on the tape of the captain.
01:00:50Look at the head up!
01:00:51This puck is crisp, and it's on the tape.
01:00:54Wedgwood can't get over it.
01:00:56A first-minute goal by Mark Stone has made this a 3-1 game.
01:01:02So McCarr returns for the Avalanche, a huge difference maker.
01:01:06John Tortorella thought Stone would be particularly impactful on the power play.
01:01:12That's proven to be true.
01:01:14All four of his goals in these playoffs have come a man up.
01:01:20He was their second-leading goal scorer in the regular season with 28, 9 fewer than Pavel Dorofiev.
01:01:26And those 28 goals came in just 60 regular season games.
01:01:35So Vegas on the board, and the crowd back engaged.
01:01:39Here comes Nathan McKinnon.
01:01:41Drops it from a car, poked off his stick by Brett Howden.
01:01:46Played rink wide, the Avs let it go, they would have been offside.
01:01:52Mark Stone, the goal, just turned 34 on May 13th.
01:01:59His 1.22 points per game in the regular season was the best of his career.
01:02:06Kulak, thick save made by Carter Hart,
01:02:09who faced officially 16 shots on goal from Colorado in the first period.
01:02:14The scorekeepers took one away from the Avs.
01:02:18Still matched their most in a period in the playoffs.
01:02:21Three on two for the moment.
01:02:22For Colorado across the line, but they're offside.
01:02:29A pretty simple break in as Eichel rims it around the boards,
01:02:33but the work by Dorofiev and Hurdle are going to get the puck to Marner.
01:02:38Look at Stone just kind of biding his time,
01:02:41looking for the back door in the right time to make his drive to the net.
01:02:45That pass is dead on the tape.
01:02:48It's a perfect play by Marner.
01:02:50His outstanding playoff continues, and Vegas is truly in the game.
01:02:56It's 3-1, and now Colorado has to have a little bit of a pushback here.
01:03:00Can they stimey what momentum that power play goal might give?
01:03:0514 career playoff power play goals, the most in franchise history,
01:03:11and 40 total playoff goals for Stone.
01:03:14Eichel, a shot off the back glass.
01:03:20Eichel, back to an empty point,
01:03:23and now Barbashev racing with Molenski,
01:03:26who went off the ice.
01:03:29Hart, in a miscommunication with the defense,
01:03:32turned it over briefly.
01:03:34But no harm there for the VGK.
01:03:37Here's Emily Kaplan.
01:03:38Kael McCarr had to go through his process to clear himself,
01:03:41but the one thing he couldn't mimic in practice
01:03:43was taking contact.
01:03:45Just talked to Nolan Pratt, who runs the defense,
01:03:47and he saw what we all saw.
01:03:48Barbashev going out of his way a few times early
01:03:50to hit McCarr, and a side relief that McCarr was able to take it.
01:03:54He said, obviously, you don't know until you see it,
01:03:57but the one thing they have noticed in the first period,
01:03:59they are a different team within the ice,
01:04:02especially with the way they're able to move the puck,
01:04:04transport it from the D zone to the O zone.
01:04:07Anytime a player of McCarr would be in the lineup healthy 100%,
01:04:12Vegas is going to finish their checks on him.
01:04:14Now they have him back in the lineup.
01:04:16They know he's missed time,
01:04:17and they're going to finish their checks.
01:04:18Every opportunity, they're going to try and finish a check on McCarr.
01:04:24The Vegas goal stone on the power play from Marner and Hurdle
01:04:29at 19 seconds.
01:04:31Manson sends it wide.
01:04:33Hart saw it coming off the back wall, swept it away.
01:04:36Arturi Lekkonen takes a shove from Shea Theodore,
01:04:39and it's moved on the line, kept in by Josh Manson.
01:04:42He played in deeper by Lekkonen for McKinnon.
01:04:47One-timer, Landeskog, and a save made by Hart.
01:04:51They're much improved tonight.
01:04:52The avalanche with getting pucks on the net.
01:04:55Too many missed shots from good places in the first two games.
01:05:01Crowd wanted a call as Hurdle got shoved down.
01:05:04They won't get it.
01:05:04Quick counter by the top line for the abs.
01:05:09Lekkonen out there behind the net.
01:05:11Takes it from Landeskog, who then got dumped by Hurdle.
01:05:15Tabes across from a car.
01:05:17And a good stick up high by Stone.
01:05:21It bounces to Tabes.
01:05:23Couldn't get it through Stone.
01:05:26Down content just to slide it in.
01:05:29His linemates needed to go off.
01:05:30It's Polisar aggressively on the four-check.
01:05:33Forced a turnover.
01:05:34Down couldn't handle the centering pass from Cole Smith.
01:05:40Much more life in their step for the VGK here in the second period.
01:05:47Don Tortorella said, you heard it in the opening of the telecast,
01:05:51that they would not take their two-game-to-none lead for granted.
01:05:54Be complacent.
01:05:56But they were certainly outplayed comfortably in the first period.
01:06:01Good deep by Padre to break up the centering pass.
01:06:04And then Hannafin a try.
01:06:06Held by Wedgwood,
01:06:08who faced only seven shots in the first period.
01:06:12But some of them were testers.
01:06:16Time now for some numbers powered by the SAP Coaching Insights app.
01:06:2254 seconds of that first period.
01:06:24Cale McCarr hit the puck on his stick.
01:06:26That's a lot, Ray.
01:06:27It may not seem like a lot, but it isn't a 20-minute period.
01:06:29It was 21 seconds more than anybody else.
01:06:33Yeah, there's not many times, if you look at that average,
01:06:36a guy's got the puck on his stick three minutes in a game.
01:06:38McCarr, of course, helped by the couple of power plays that Colorado had.
01:06:43The puck, he's got it on his stick a lot.
01:06:44But he just changes everything.
01:06:47There's very few defensemen in the league that can change the game when they exit,
01:06:52when they shoot it, when they transport it like McCarr can.
01:06:55You know, we're talking about Hughes, Worenski, and it's a pretty short list.
01:07:00Marner trying to take the puck away.
01:07:02He had a beautiful assist on the goal.
01:07:04He's one of the great passing forwards in the game.
01:07:06That's locked down, and the rebound!
01:07:09They score!
01:07:11William Carlson!
01:07:20And it's 3-2!
01:07:33That book on the first period is long gone.
01:07:36Colorado can't clear the puck again,
01:07:40as Njushkin has the long rebound to deal with.
01:07:43He can't catch it.
01:07:44And Williams Carlson's shot through the legs of Kulap over the glove of Wedgwood.
01:07:52And Carlson's made it 3-2.
01:07:55What a start here in the second period for Vegas.
01:08:01And icing the call against Colorado.
01:08:04First of the playoffs for Carlson.
01:08:06In his ninth game, he went six months without playing.
01:08:11First of the...
01:08:12Played the first 14 regular season games, then missed six months.
01:08:17Again, pressure on the wall really has been a problem here in this second period.
01:08:22That's three times that Colorado has had the puck and couldn't clear it.
01:08:27And Marner ends up with it.
01:08:29The long shot by Wedgwood.
01:08:30He tries to punch it away.
01:08:31And the rebound drops to William Carlson.
01:08:34It's 3-2.
01:08:35When Bruce Cassidy was coaching the Golden Knights,
01:08:38he always would say about Carlson,
01:08:40when he's in the lineup, I never even worry about his line.
01:08:43The line is looked after if Carlson's there.
01:08:46He's back in the lineup.
01:08:47Marner can go back to the wing.
01:08:49They're a better team with him in, and it's now 3-2.
01:08:52They scored four goals in the first 14 games
01:08:56of the regular season.
01:08:58Went out with a serious lower body injury.
01:09:00They didn't think he would come back,
01:09:02but he did in the second round against Anaheim.
01:09:07Played on May 4th, his first game since November 8th.
01:09:15What a difference maker he has been.
01:09:17The 33-year-old member of their Stanley Cup championship team
01:09:27back in 2023 when he scored a career-high 17 points.
