00:05Kinjarling is the name, the traditional name of Albany.
00:09Jinnining Nyalak basically means Sees Us.

00:22I think what's really special within this exhibition is that while you listen
00:27and you get to have the opportunity to sit with the elders,
00:30you actually do feel country within that court.
00:34Inside, the landscapes of Kinjarling and specially recorded oral histories,
00:39with a Manang lens on existing collections.
00:42We're all the photographs that include a lot of the men,
00:44Makari and all those sort of people.
00:46There's no women, no children.
00:49And the fear was held for the fact that the whalers
00:53are out there chasing a lot of our women.
00:56The other thing of major importance was disease.
01:00We lost over 300 people there from disease,
01:02so they kept the women and children well away from both,
01:05both the whalers and the disease.

01:11It's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle and I reckon we've each got a little part
01:14and we put it into a jigsaw puzzle and you get your puzzle sorted.

01:19As you can imagine, historical collecting 140 years ago
01:22did not preference the voices of Aboriginal people,
01:26so that is certainly one of the reasons why we're focused on it now.
