00:00A group of Democratic senators are calling on the DHS to immediately abandon its plans
00:04to develop face-scanning smart glasses.
00:07How would these facial recognition smart glasses work, and why are lawmakers against them?
00:11I'll explain in 90 seconds for your Tech in 90.
00:13ICE is already using smartphone apps like Mobile Fortify to take pictures of people
00:16and run their photos against facial recognition databases.
00:19DHS says these smart glasses will speed up immigration enforcement by giving agents instant
00:24access to identifying information while in the field.
00:26But when someone's face is scanned, where is it sent?
00:28While details are scarce on the proposed smart glasses, we know DHS uses several federally
00:33linked databases to identify people based on their biometrics.
00:36DHS's automated biometric identification system contains more than 270 million records, including
00:42faces, fingerprints, and iris scans.
00:45The State Department's VSEN passport photo database can be accessed, as well as CBP's
00:49Traveler Verification Service, which includes photos taken at airports and at border crossings.
00:54Democratic senators opposing the DHS smart glasses say this would let agents scan individuals
00:58including American citizens without their knowledge or consent.
01:01They warn the technology could be abused to identify and target legal immigrants or even protesters.
