00:01Six months ago, five teams took part in an unforgettable competition.
00:10Let's go.
00:11We got this.
00:12Rapido, Rapido.
00:13Up there, do you see that?
00:15Oh, this is sick.
00:16An epic race of over 12,000 kilometres from west to east.
00:23Look at this, incredible.
00:26You can see that on a new build in Manchester here.
00:28Well, we made it.
00:31From the sun-drenched, bustling streets of Sicily.
00:34That's a view and a half, you know, screensaver vibes.
00:37To the vast, unforgiving wilderness of Mongolia.
00:42I love how flattered it is into, like, absolute mortals.
00:48Absolutely epic.
00:48They tested their own stamina and endurance.
00:52Get that out!
00:54Can I have your skates?
00:56Normals.
00:57So we've lost our lead.
00:59Across eight countries, rich in culture and experience.
01:04You gave me your vodka!
01:06Welcome, Kazakhstan!
01:09Today's celebration is called a circumcision party.
01:13Sick.
01:13I don't think I've ever seen anything so cool in my life.
01:19But only one team could claim victory.
01:21Three, two, one.
01:24And take home the £20,000 prize.
01:27No!
01:31Now, for the first time since the finish line, they reunite.
01:36Hello!
01:37How are we doing?
01:38To share their stories.
01:40I don't think I was thinking anything other than,
01:43I can't believe I'm here.
01:44To reveal how the race changed their lives.
01:46We wanted to make sure this didn't break us.
01:49And it's actually made us stronger.
01:51High five.
01:53I wanted to do that for a long time, Kate.
01:57Margot, she's very open, very free.
02:00And I've taken that on board.
02:04And to marvel at the process undertaken
02:07to bring their extreme journeys to the screen.
02:10We just need to make sure we know
02:11where all the teams are at all times.
02:13They're like the brain of race across the world.
02:15What a job to be able to do.
02:17As they all relive...
02:21Let's go!
02:22...their race...
02:23Come on, ma.
02:24It's right there.
02:25...and across the world.
02:36Having arrived home in the UK almost six months ago,
02:40all five teams are coming back together.
02:44Hi, folks.
02:45Hi, guys.
02:46I'm going to pop some microphones on you.
02:47Yeah.
02:48This is very professional.
02:49None of this on the road.
02:51First to arrive, siblings Katie and Harrison,
02:55ready to see their fellow competitors
02:57for the first time since leaving the race.
03:01I can't wait to see the guys.
03:03I'm so excited to see them.
03:05How you doing?
03:06The second duo to join,
03:09father and daughter, Andrew and Molly.
03:12Hello!
03:13Come on.
03:15I'm so excited.
03:16Hi!
03:19Good to see you.
03:19Andrew, Andrew.
03:21Good to see you, ma.
03:22That's beautiful.
03:23Look at you.
03:24Good.
03:25Oh, my God.
03:26It's just been wild.
03:27Absolutely wild.
03:28Should we go and do it again?
03:29Yeah.
03:29Should we go and do it again?
03:30Next, to walk through the doors...
03:33Hello!
03:34Hello!
03:36Hello!
03:36Mark and Margo.
03:38Hello.
03:38Mark, how are we doing?
03:39It was very good, my mate.
03:41Oh, look at you.
03:41Good to see you.
03:42Morning.
03:43Have you been up to any adventures?
03:45He's been travelling.
03:46He got right out, got his rucksack on.
03:48Did you have a rucksack?
03:49Yeah.
03:49Yeah, rucksack.
03:50In Thailand.
03:51On his own?
03:51On my own.
03:52Singapore.
03:53Sri Lanka.
03:54So jealous.
03:55And guess who I bumped into Sri Lanka?
03:57Who?
03:58Oh!
03:59You've been away.
04:00You've been away.
04:02I did Sydney, New Zealand and then Sri Lanka.
04:06Race really gave me that sense of freedom to go, actually,
04:09I can do a bit more travelling.
04:12We bumped into each other.
04:13That is fun.
04:14I know.
04:14It was so good.
04:16Hi.
04:18We're at a five-star hotel and all we can find to eat is...
04:24Mongolian vegetable noodles and...
04:27Mongolian seafood rice.
04:30There we are.
04:31We cannot escape Mongolia wherever we go or their food.
04:34Hi.
04:35Hi.
04:37Also back with the group, cousins Pooja and Roshni.
04:41Girls.
04:41Hi.
04:43Hi.
04:44Hi.
04:46Hi.
04:46How are you?
04:47Do you love the voice?
04:48That's my voice.
04:49Oh, perfect.
04:50Your voice is gone.
04:52Oh, that's so good.
04:53Oh, that's so good.
04:53Oh, that's so good.
04:55Oh, that's so good.
04:55That is terrible timing.
04:57Sorry.
04:59And the last pair to join the pack, 19-year-old best friends Joe and Kush.
05:05Are we the last ones?
05:06Yeah, I think we're the last ones.
05:10Hey.
05:10How are you?
05:11Hey.
05:14Awesome.
05:16Good to see you.
05:17Good to see you.
05:18Good to see you.
05:19Good to see you.
05:19Good to see you.
05:19Good to see you.
05:19You're so awesome.
05:20Oh, that's so fun.
05:22Your boys, your boys, you got very fun of them, didn't you, on the trip?
05:25They're like our little brothers.
05:26You're our little brothers.
05:27So, Gares, as the people who left early, who do you think, between the whole audience who do
05:32think won who's giving winner energy we always thought that you two would win mark and margo
05:38yeah you're always so charming and like full of energy and like you just seem to know everything
05:42like with my dad like i could ask him any question he would just know the answer i feel
05:45like you're exactly the same oh gosh who ever won can you please step forward
06:02oh my god i'm so proud rosh look it looks like a cathedral these five pairs put their everyday
06:12lives on pause and came together for an epic adventure but it was actually months before
06:19they stood on the starting line that they began their journey they were selected from thousands
06:26of application videos hello everybody it's molly and daddy andrew hello i'm harrison and i'm getty
06:36we are siblings i'm 22 she's 20. why we want to do it is because we want to see the
06:42world want to
06:42experience things add some spice to life you know keep it interesting yeah experience like different
06:48yeah cultures people hi i'm puja and i'm roshney please take us yeah we would love to go why do
06:56you
06:56think we'd be good mark well we're like chalk and cheese i'm very practical boring well it just has fun
07:03fun fun and as casting progressed all shortlisted candidates were brought to london to test their
07:11navigation skills without phones or cash and armed only with cryptic clues ask someone yeah unless
07:20you burn my mind excuse me excuse me we're in a race at the moment and we just need some
07:25help
07:25finding out where a location is molly's taking charge i'll follow her
07:32we're in a competition you wouldn't take us to golden hind does anyone know if this is southbound
07:37it's something good it's southbound just ask people it's easier do a challenge and these ladies
07:45are filming for this challenge to see if i can get anything for my birthday i've got my passport my
07:49bag
07:49if you want to see 59 yeah oh this is sick no way that's sick 21 minutes what yes mate
07:58nice
07:59well thank you amazing four months after selection they arrived at the airport having packed for every
08:07eventuality with no idea where in the world they were heading their destination revealed just
08:15hours before departure you'll be flying to palermo in sicily oh my god suddenly you're gonna pizza
08:23tonight oh that's brilliant that's good yeah yeah in the historic city of palermo
08:32i'm actually really nervous can't lie syria they all came face to face for the very first time
08:38here we go oh god they're looking fit and young good to meet on margot margot i'm joe oh i
08:44can see him
08:45hi okay so i'm guessing everyone's here to win i have a saying seconds forced loser oh okay
08:53suddenly i'm just like i need to win this that's like drawing the enemy lines now will we get this
08:58thing
08:58started yeah yeah when we first met you guys in palermo it was like that that couple minutes of
09:13hi guys and then it was off i don't think i was thinking anything other than can't believe i'm here
09:18yeah yeah and i can't believe i'm about to do this and this backpack's heavy i hypnotized myself to
09:24believe that backpack was really light didn't i she did but as soon as i got home what the hell
09:30after the first leg i thought casey and harrison was just going to blow us out the water
09:37you know a day and a half ahead of the first leg you know it's unbelievable it was it was
09:42very
09:42intimidating to have you guys so far ahead because we didn't know anything about you you're a myth
09:47but then when we met you harrison you still impressed your understanding of budgeting and
09:52timings and and like this overview that was almost like a computer felt like that that couldn't turn
09:58out that is him yeah i've got a toiletry bag the size of a house yeah well i've got all
10:07the useful
10:07stuff i've got alarm clocks compass so you just bring you know the stuff you need and i'll bring the
10:13stuff
10:13for both of us yeah no this you're getting it now katie and older brother harrison started the race with
10:21very different attitudes to money and planning you definitely took the role with the budget you're in a
10:27deep emotional relationship with your calculator we have spent 8.5 percent this leg of our total budget
10:36which is very very good it works being a tight bastard works
10:43pocket meat and cheese really dry really drives an understatement like i've just stuck my face in the
10:51sahara desert i took it very personally as my responsibility to get us to that finish line
10:58and it kind of soothes me to constantly i'm thinking about it oh look at this this is not good
11:04for the
11:04budget i've got a shot glass collection at home who buys all this shit me that really took over for
11:14me like i just couldn't help but uh be like absorbed by the race and the race environment and not
11:19the
11:19experiences although the race environment is about winning it's also about the unique way of traveling that
11:26you're doing by racing i genuinely loved every second of it you know i didn't maybe i didn't have
11:31that drive because i was just enjoying it so much like i just honestly had the best time ever i
11:36think
11:36everyone will agree you were pure sunshine the whole way through i think one day you were like you
11:40were sitting with a glass of prosecco at checkpoint being like i could be at work on a monday
11:46as they ventured further east katie's desire to pause and take it all in feels very much
11:53once in a lifetime started to shift harrison's perspective on the race i'm on a horse in kyrgyzstan
12:03it's incredible that is just ridiculous this is stunning
12:20it's a picture of tesco express tesco yeah tesco he was so chuffed with this picture of tesco
12:30express such a lovely moment but funny why am i sat in a treehouse in turkey looking at a picture
12:35of
12:35tesco express that was kind of when i sort of let go a little bit and stopped and started to
12:42appreciate
12:42and spend time with people and that's really where i came away with the sort of the mantra that
12:46okay this is actually what the race is about oh no no no no you sure uh-huh what has
12:53he given you
12:53it's a medal oh half marathon we are friends well harrison actually sent something didn't you yeah i
13:02have we got in contact with the guy that sent me a medal and i've sent him sending my one
13:07back
13:07in a little sort of uk hamper box oh that's so nice yeah you've come back and you've got
13:12like you you've gone like i need to travel and i do think you have it has like changed you
13:18i have
13:19to say that i probably do see the value in it the monetary value in it now i've not spent
13:23my own
13:23money yet on it but it might happen i guess you know you've learned that you it firstly it's not
13:29like a holiday well i'd call it a bit holiday sometimes maybe if you're doing it margot's way
13:35their growth as a team came from learning to open up to one another deepening a bond in ways katie
13:42had always wanted i don't know i feel i just felt like why is this affecting me and it's not
13:48affecting
13:49him like how does he seem so okay about it all i definitely think the race has helped me like
13:57verbalize like my feelings because before like i might have felt like i wanted to say something to
14:02you you know something bothering me if i was upset or something um but i physically could not get the
14:09words out whereas now i think because yeah the race is just a really intense environment and you've got
14:14to be supportive for each other i just wanted to say um like i suppose thank you for for being
14:21there
14:22and being well that's really nice to hear actually i now just feel a lot more supported yeah like the
14:30race gave me a better understanding of you and you a better understanding of me yeah but but you do
14:34grow
14:35and you have to and it's a life experience and you have to accept it as as a life experience
14:38and
14:38realize and yeah pick something from it and and you did yeah yeah okay it's a good one for your
14:46hinge profile harrison makes you look really cool i've got a man back on there it feels like i'm going
14:51to plunge a toilet if it looks that bad could you please try and help me together come on oh
15:01my god
15:01well done my finish line we wouldn't been able to have as good of a time with anyone else
15:07it was sort of the perfect combo and we've got that for life yeah this is breathtaking incredible
15:16oh wow look at that one the teams were on the road for 51 days absolutely incredible it's hard to
15:23find
15:23words isn't it it is absolutely yeah with cameras recording their every move with them a five-person
15:31team responsible for capturing the general views known as the gv crew who filmed the scale beauty
15:40and rich variety of the journey if i want to give up teaching there's one job i would want to
15:46have
15:46it's the crew they do all those picturesque shots and what a job to be able to do we're shooting
15:51athens
15:52out today we've been up here since half six this morning big bank of cloud came in and kind of
15:58killed us a
15:59little bit sometimes it helps it came out and like created all these shadows across the city
16:04but thankfully the weather has picked up the sun is shining
16:12the team that take these incredible shots really get to be creative and think about how to capture
16:19this beautiful area in the best way possible which is what you see on the screens so they
16:24essentially inspire the whole of the uk and whoever watches the race across the world to want to go
16:29to these places by the way they capture it on camera wow look at this we're going to shoot this
16:37time
16:38lapse over the mountains it is beautiful here the landscape is incredible
16:47and it's actually they've got so much stuff right got long distance cameras wide shot lenses they've got
16:53close-ups they've got everything yeah they smashed it
17:00alongside the gv crew there are three more vital teams dovetailing seamlessly to bring the race to life
17:07calms check in london a 20 strong team of producers researchers and production management
17:16following evolving stories and potential routes you've got someone who is relaying back every
17:22decision everything we say to the head office in london who obviously on uk time
17:30it feels like the brain of control center control center there you go i'm thinking about it medically
17:36but they're like the brain of race across the world and then you have like the limbs in
17:39on location a small embedded filming crew living and breathing every step of the race with each pair
17:48how are you feeling i think that's your duvet aaron that's the smaller one the bigger one should be the
17:55year oh you're gonna put your lavender spray on it and finally the checkpoint crew who are one step
18:04ahead of the racers tracking their every move and planning for all eventualities got joe and kush
18:12i've got 10 a.m do you think that's right yeah i think about 60 minutes away there's a whole
18:16team
18:16that stays in the checkpoint and they've got their own job to do if they go the most efficient way
18:21they'll
18:21get a car all the way up to there but there are various other points that they could get dropped
18:26on the hill they're responsible for setting up and testing the final run to each new checkpoint
18:37hotel and they're to support each team on their arrival say hi hannah give me the camera
18:49what's your what's your role hannah my role is to look after cars when they're at checkpoint make sure
18:55they're fed watered happy healthy that's it once the planning's done it's over to the race unpredictable
19:06unscripted and whatever happens whenever teams arrive the crew has to be ready we are here at the
19:12finale location um and we are just waiting for one of the teams to come in where the spit is
19:18there's a
19:18direct line of sight so we don't want the cars to see us so we're having to lie down and
19:23hide
19:23voiced for the signal
19:28okay go go go go go everyone
19:31that is a spit isn't it yeah when you're coming into checkpoint it gets really exciting doesn't it
19:38ah here we go i'm about to have sent some messages into these devices for the runway
19:51to find the amphitheater and the way further instructions i need to find the minute right
19:55i think it's at the other side of the bridge okay ready power everything up
20:03is this right yeah oh
20:07two blocks in there yeah
20:12one
20:13body
20:14father saw the hotel it's here margot it's here yes
20:17it's all that things fired copy that we're rolling here it is john
20:25please sign in here
20:28what
20:44as the checkpoint is approached the reality of each precious minute falls into focus lads we're going
20:51to beat you no way come on mark with every team throwing their all into the chance to climb the
20:59board hey go speed up look you okay buddy i'm good poshie faster faster we've got a checkpoint to get
21:07to
21:08get me out of this taxi and ready to run traffic jump uh it just felt like tables turned so
21:15quickly
21:16we can't afford to make any mistakes and we've already made one the crew can give you absolutely
21:21no help and it can be like very easy to go like guys you're giving me nothing here but they
21:26can't
21:26because then it's not fair this is actually a joke well that's what's going on because i don't know
21:32they had to walk through every stupid decision we made knowing we were going in the wrong direction
21:38actually we're kind of going back on ourselves yeah oh god but having the lead is one bus journey away
21:45big money moves big money moves right little money moves it's right there
21:50come on hope and pray now
21:55we were looking out for the boys because we noticed you becoming more savvy and more competitive
22:00because you said from the first we're in it we're really seriously in it to win it but there's more
22:05and more like we're not going to talk to you you could be a threat and and and it was
22:09these guys
22:09you guys because you're clever that's the thing wolfies are very very like but quite quickly you were
22:13like zoom here are the boys how are we do you know where you're going now yeah all right you
22:19guys you
22:19got a plan yeah we have a plan yeah are we allowed to know where you're heading to
22:24they're trying to present funds they're trying to get information else see you boys we'll see you
22:28guys see yeah oh no best friends last night sworn enemies yeah whoa oh we were there to win
22:37really we we are we whether i've been saying this from this we both have been saying this from the
22:41start we were there to win i think i have to win you just want to do better than everyone
22:45else
22:46oh we brought back five and sixty three we're we're 10 short is there any way we could change
22:52money i don't know where there was a situation where um molly and andrew were 10 euros short
22:58you wouldn't give us a tenner for a tenner no oh that's a shame i thought that that's a shame
23:04i was like nah realistically we're here to win i feel like we should not belong no oh what are
23:10you
23:10chance you were very very down to to just lend them a bit of money i'm i'm i'm glad we
23:15didn't
23:16give any money i'm glad set a precedent 100 i would very much say that your experience was to win
23:23and
23:23you really enjoyed it and the whole way through we were very competitive obviously but we were forced
23:29we were trying our hardest we were still coming in and um like we were constantly back of the pack
23:34back
23:34of the pack and it's about staying on it people talk about strategies if we had any strategy coming
23:38into this was to stay in the game as long as possible and then try and win it at the
23:42end
23:42and that's what we did yeah were you two right behind each other not speaking to you again
23:50it's all right that's okay the gloves are off
23:54but there's a good good amount of luck and like i think like the favorite moments for me and it
23:59sounds
24:00so sad but it was when like connecting transport just worked out honest to god like i i just couldn't
24:06relax until i knew what challenge thought was going on elimination leg mr meanie made us wait for
24:11a bus i decided on budget terms that we should wait and get the bus rather than pay the taxi
24:16and we waited three three and a half hours three and a half hours for a bus you should have
24:21waited 12.
24:27smile
24:30your shoes get wet wet shoe i love my feet right now they're very happy
24:36the cousins embarked on the race to step away from the busy careers they'd worked hard to build
24:41and embrace a more unpredictable way of life pepperoncino
24:48calabrese this is different rosh is absolutely smashing it she's maintained her energy levels
24:54look at her she's so cute contra
25:02what are you doing oh no yes you can
25:08so growing up you know we lived like two streets away we were like very close but life happens i
25:15think
25:15the goal of just going on to this is we'd both been in our careers for like 10 years um
25:21so life gets
25:22very intense and we wanted to do something about that this guy he is a guard of the gods okay
25:30he's
25:30waving i've always wanted to take time off but there's always been a reason not to so i guess race
25:36kind of forced us to take the time off and it kind of it it showed that it's not the
25:40end of the world
25:42oh my god where are you going ah oh sorry what time is the buff
25:48uh family yes yes i'm feeling pumped we're flying high i think we've handled ourselves really
25:55well on this leg i'm excited posh we're second we're second
26:03it's been a wake-up call with family you always think people are going to be around but actually
26:08you need to put in that effort to make sure you keep that relationship and you know we just we
26:14wanted to make sure this didn't break us and it's actually made us stronger yeah but their momentum
26:20faltered in turquia we asked about buses tonight but unfortunately there wasn't anything available
26:25it gives the other teams time to patch up and arriving in last at the third checkpoint
26:31led to their surprise elimination please sign in overleaf oh oh my god we're lost
26:46i think when we saw the book we didn't expect that everybody would have done so well on that leg
26:54but
26:54you guys aced it but saying that it was a great leg like we had an incredible time and honestly
27:01mongolia was for you guys like i'm so happy that you guys had that adventure thank you also we got
27:07to
27:07go on our own adventure yeah we went on a trip to vietnam after all of this ended
27:15it was just a great place we got to have really good food get massages yeah we just had our
27:24own
27:24experience we plan to go away together again with our husbands with our families so if this had not
27:32happened i don't think we would be doing that i don't think we would be as proactive yeah you think
27:38about like what race and travel has given each one of us that has brought you together and like
27:44my wife has said me like who are you traveling with all that kind of thing and i'd say like
27:47beautiful girl who's an anesthetist and i go i just want molly to turn out like you and i mean
27:53that just amazing and lifelong friends hopefully and absolutely we missed you though honestly
28:00we wanted to sign your names in the book oh that is amazing for all the teams this was a
28:14journey
28:15defined by endurance and extremes look look look oh that is really nice you can see the whole coast
28:21from the sun-baked coastlines of europe to the untamed expanse of central asia oh my god
28:30oh look at this it is like the wild west mark isn't it yeah into the sub-zero temperatures of
28:38mongolia oh feel the cold retracing a path steeped in history along the old silk road
28:47they encountered a huge variety of people and local customs
28:52this is my father oh hello nice to meet you hello hello hello hello nice to meet you
29:01yes
29:07it's just such a like extreme is it like you just started off in like central mainland europe where
29:14that you had all the comforts really of of home and and then going to just it literally is mad
29:20once you left europe yes and went to kazakhstan it was an alien environment it was rocky it was dry
29:29it was arid and from that point yeah it was a completely different journey but even from the
29:35trains did you you must have got to see like scenery nothing there's absolutely nothing what it's like
29:41being on the moon i can't describe it there is nothing there you really throughout the whole
29:48experience went from one to the other done it went from language to no language do you have avto um
29:56car machine after after lots of transport to no trance yeah the bus it's all closed yeah yes i found
30:06the bus station it's just a shed holy moly traffic jam look at them there's millions of them yeah i'd
30:15say
30:15this year race is very much extreme that's the word that sum it up i think it's just so nice
30:20that you
30:21just you you're worried that oh they don't don't speak the same language but you find a way to
30:26communicate like whether it's you dancing with everyone or you know our man with the tesco like
30:32you you like yeah you find calm and growing you'll always find a way to communicate that was like the
30:37most beautiful thing yeah yeah when we did all these homestays like to live and sleep on the same roof
30:43share the food like this is such a privilege it's even more of a privilege in my eyes than being
30:48able to
30:48afford like the five star hotels no they treated us like family oh my god you've done that so well
31:00thank you places that we went we were very different to the western world it was a real
31:06it was a culture shock in the coolest way this is a really big deal oh my god there's an
31:11eagle
31:14nice nice to meet you nice good it's nice to meet you you're i'm so beautiful thank you
31:23i love the outfits this is what i think we're both searching for on
31:26in this journey as a whole is the experiences that aren't readily accessible
31:37it's very bitter i quite like it delicious look at him delicious good he's very good yeah
31:45but when we got to mongolia it really got hard for us we really struggled it felt like your choices
31:53were kind of taken away from you because at the start it was kind of do you go by boat
31:57do you go by
31:57train do you go by car do you go by taxi it then just became get there you couldn't be
32:02competitive
32:03with each other you were just being competitive against mongolia is the best way to put it is that
32:07you were fighting the elements i think like the temperature swing the whole way we figured out
32:11was like a 54 degree temperature swing from hottest to coldest and it's just i was looking forward to
32:16the the cold but maybe not that cold maybe i maybe i wish too hard for that like your clothes
32:22had to
32:23change yeah you close for italy greece and wild temperatures and then all of a sudden those clothes
32:30just kind of you should have just thrown them out we could have just thrown them out had less weight
32:34to carry no just layering up just layering up mongolia just wore the same outfit every single day yes
32:39i did yes and all your clothes yeah honestly never changed your clothes in mongolia i didn't know
32:47but as somebody who's only kind of really gone on family holidays uh i really really struggled with
32:53the the did i have the ability to put a backpack on me and travel in that way uh always
33:00wanted to do
33:00it as a child always wanted to do it as a young person i never did it because it was
33:04pure want to
33:05do it but it was a fear kind of stopped you doing it before it was a physical test as
33:10well as a mental test
33:12one of the reasons i did lack self-confidence and in my ability to do it was was the heart
33:17attack
33:18and the heart attack put me back kind of mentally quite a bit i'm starting off in system yeah my
33:25god
33:25it'd be amazing for andrew the race became a way to see the world look at that molly absolutely stunning
33:34and prove his heart attack three years ago wouldn't hold him back i would always say to children
33:40uh in in class the world's your oyster go and enjoy it but i never lived it and i was
33:47always kind
33:48of a bit of a fraud that way you're sweating the relief of getting to that first checkpoint yeah and
34:03signing that book yeah give me the shot in the arm i looked at you and said we can do
34:07this
34:07the stamina's there we can enjoy it as well we could enjoy it it's my first train in italy molly
34:14you know my love of trains look at the striations of the rock the way they're going down the lines
34:18oh my
34:19god never seen these before ever different way of doing it total different way of doing beekeeping
34:25and there's your honey seeing the mountains seeing the landscape seeing where people live that's what i do
34:31that's what i love really looking forward to getting out the kayak i have my own kayak in at home
34:39but
34:39i've never actually used it because of my dickie ticker my dickie ticker so uh haven't been able to do
34:45it
34:45so yeah it'd be lovely
34:51whoo out the open water look at those mountains
35:02i wanted to do that for a long time kit
35:05it proved to me that i could uh that wasn't going to get me
35:14sorry
35:14it was so nice to kind of have the kayaking and like just that whole thing to us was just
35:28really special
35:29like you kind of have to cherish those moments it's very important to cherish those moments
35:33just enjoy it and that's i think i tried to say that to everyone i absolutely enjoy it
35:38we actually been kayaking since i've actually booked a trip we're going to uh norway with my wife
35:45i think that whole rocky coast all the way up there would be unbelievable yeah and we've booked kayaking
35:53in the fjords oh wow i'll be beautiful
35:59i don't want to be stuck at a train station for molly the race was an opportunity to find her
36:04own path in life and prove her independence is there a bus to kiva both no
36:12i don't know actually i don't know before the race i would have found it very difficult
36:18those big decisions i would have overthought it i would have i would have got annoyed myself
36:22especially if it went wrong i don't want 100 i want 70 70 70. daddy he's there for 70.
36:33well done good call yeah i do think now i am a wee bit more self-confident that contentment has
36:41come
36:41with my decisions people need their doctor to be confident because that's who you're looking to
36:47for answers so it's really nice to sleep at night and not have thoughts and thoughts and thoughts and
36:52thoughts it was a definite changing moment towards the end yeah there was a strong sense of more
36:58confidence yeah and more decidedness
37:18i think pre-race we kind of proved to each other and like in life we prove to each other
37:23we're good as
37:24the father and daughter and i think race the one thing that allowed us to prove to each other is
37:28we're a good team and that is we can make decisions we can have equal opinion and
37:34hold each other and be like yeah no that's good that's bad and communicate
37:38we've done we've done we did it we did it all right kid come right there
37:48still be her daddy for the rest of my life but also it'll be uh it'll be more of a
37:53of a friendship
37:54and a pal yeah absolutely there's features of beauty isn't there yeah it's got stonework mega
38:05also looking to strengthen their bond and find a new dynamic in-laws mark and margo
38:11oh wow i'd love to have a go at one of these wouldn't you come on you get one i
38:16get one
38:19going with mark though i really wanted this but i i there was a little bit
38:23we weren't completely comfortable were we not at all no uh i found her annoying
38:30and margot thought i was a boring old fogey basically judgy and boring judgy and boring yes
38:36yeah you may all know julie's last dying wish was that we became friends we continued
38:41and build on our friendship and that's what we did
38:46i love naples absolutely brilliant place i i hate it i love naples i just didn't enjoy it at all
38:53i did think how's it going to go with mark how are we going to be on the race and
38:58i have to say
38:58some people were a little bit doubtful about the two of us doing it together they were a little bit
39:03why are you going with mark what in god's name it's a white cocoon what what's it for what did
39:11you what
39:11what's it modesty so i think it was ridiculous but as the race progressed we didn't have a care in
39:20the world did we not care in the world yeah try hitting it flat on like that oh okay okay
39:32now we're talking now we are talking
39:39we're just two people enjoying the moment yeah and we were just having a bit of a laugh weren't we
39:46really we were yes and it just organically just grew
39:54the last two legs of it was so hard in mongolia that's when the real it was the real cement
39:59between us because it's that's when it was we we were on our knees and we just yeah and we
40:04needed
40:04each other and we both needed to really pull together didn't we and support each other yeah
40:13nope it was busy so five ways is it no if you miss a rush hour we had to suffer
40:20i think we had to
40:21suffer and push and strive for it really to be the adventure that it was and for it to truly
40:30make us unite and have each other's back we're doing blue sky thinking today that's all we can do
40:38you know just determination to finish a side of margot i'd never seen before it's what kept me going
40:45just about do you go to harcorden yes oh god so kind thank you off we go we're doing it
40:52our way and
40:53we never ever give up as a team we've always forged on we've always forged on and i'm so proud
41:00of for
41:00doing that you know i would have given up i would have given up without margot being there i wouldn't
41:06give up on you though mark and they wouldn't and that was so that was that and that's a sign
41:10of friendship
41:11uh here's to you julia wherever you are yeah who inspired us who inspired us thank you julia yeah thank
41:19you julia
41:20she's laughing
41:24for margot traveling was also an opportunity to step away from her day-to-day routine
41:30part of coming on the race was like running away from real life and just enjoying myself
41:35and just be me for a change and just go let rip taking respite from her responsibilities like caring
41:42for her elderly mum since i've got back from the race i've been more centered i did feel like dorothy
41:50coming back in the wizard of art you know coming home and that there is no place like home i
41:54was kind
41:54of in a way running away from my situation in life but now actually the determination i was
42:01applying to those challenges i've applied them to my life this bbc bbc yes race across the world
42:10to make things nicer to make things easier and so i'm living that best life but in liverpool
42:17oh my goodness for mark the race also became something more oh my gosh
42:25shifting his perspective on life itself it's unbelievable this wildness it's strange to say
42:33you know at 67 i was always embarrassed about doing things i thought what people might say what people
42:39might think i just couldn't care less now anyway because margot she's very open and very free and
42:45doesn't worry what people think about it and i've taken that on board you were first on the dance
42:50floor in sri lanka as well he led he led the party oh i was yes yeah the bailer yeah
42:56you know for us
42:58we were winners because we'd done what we wanted to set out to do and we'd won for julia that
43:02was the
43:03thing yeah yes we are good good friends we're mates now we are yeah mates do you think you'd go
43:08on
43:08holiday again well we've been talking about it yes we have been talking about it yes and we'd like
43:14adventure we do want to we we are definitely up for adventure like it's so nice that you have that
43:19relationship together and you've built that for julia like wherever she is now i'm sure she's very
43:25happy to see you both like this it's almost like she was on the race with you yeah she was
43:31on the
43:31lovely it's a lovely legacy lovely legacy
43:41arriving in mongolia the filming teams faced one of the toughest environments the race had come up
43:47against navigating extreme weather and limited infrastructure after months of meticulous planning
44:01planning of mongolia it must have been a huge endeavor for everyone we're here we're mongolia it's
44:07all very exciting we've got this massive map of uh the country that our level fixers have um
44:12lent us and we basically have just got all of the stops and the potential places we think that the
44:17cast might be headed we just need to make sure we know where all the teams are at all times
44:22to ensure safety production members keep the teams trackable and in sight whenever they travel by car
44:29and what are called follow vehicles so this is day 42 of race across the world and i'm in our
44:37sb
44:38following the cast and crew they are they are over here i'm currently wrangling yesterday's rushes
44:47uh this is my office uh this is my office that's the final two weeks of race and this just
44:53feels like
44:54an absolute privilege and pleasure to be here filming this it's in the middle of nowhere but
45:01anyway we're in muggle there i actually currently can't hear them because we've got so many devices
45:06plugged into me we've got walkies we've got phones we've got garments currently the only way we can contact
45:15the sv is with our garment so yes we're on our own yes
45:28all right weather again we may heat six twenty minus 25 degrees it's going to be cold stay covered
45:36properly yeah nice and stay warm well
45:43while we're in here in mongolia it's cold during the day and even colder at night so we need quick
45:48access to extra layers after sunset from italy to mongolia we've gone from plus 30 down to minus 30
45:56which in itself brings new problems where italy was sunburn here with hypothermia
46:03to battle the sub-zero conditions everyone on the ground had to be equipped with extreme cold weather gear
46:10this is where we slept last night but the stove was off it's exceptionally lots of layers on
46:16it is quite extreme here the worst part of the entire night was doing snoring guys that's such a
46:21bib that is your snoring your snoring it's colder than than i had expected that about you the coats we
46:29had the outfits like we'd put your hood up and pull the zip ties and you'd literally have a little
46:35space like this to look through like it was it was bad it was it was fun yeah but i
46:39think i think i
46:40grossly underestimated how cold it was going to be ending in mongolia was just crazy it is so cold
46:49yeah oh my god where are you going i don't have a clue there's just such vastness and so many
46:58random
46:58things can happen so for the crew the amount of planning needed to try and get 10 idiots to race
47:04across the world is insane
47:11i mean when we when we started uh this whole journey we was all we always said we were like
47:15when we travel we want to live it but me and joe have never really we spent some time together
47:19being like little holidays but it's never been more than like what like a week two weeks we've
47:23ever spent at the same time and so it was nothing to what i'd imagined this is important
47:30um slides or something and these comfort comfort is your best friend those are old man shoes down
47:37there those are old man's shoes oh eager to make every second count fresh out of college joe and
47:44cush wanted to explore life beyond the familiar world they were raised in by their mums in liverpool
47:51this is our plan this is our security which i'm going to be taken charge of
47:55so we still need to be on it with kush sometimes because we've got our passports yeah yeah excuse
48:02me definitely are you trying to say that livepool's a small place we've gone up the city don't get me
48:07wrong but it's kind of like you still don't scale it's how probably the world is i mean coming into
48:14this once we applied we realized we are probably going to be the youngest so i think with youth comes
48:19this uh this preconception of like a lack of maturity um lack of life experience we see ourselves as the
48:27underdogs we see ourselves as the yeah the least capable and i think it's flipped in it
48:34yes 3am in the morning i don't think any teams could have done it faster
48:40yeah don't judge a book by his cover i think one thing about me and joe is we actually we're
48:46good
48:46at different things we work well with what the other person lacked is and like me i'm i sort of
48:51overthought a lot and i was like ah we have to do with everything and think of it in a
48:54specific way
48:54and some and joe would be like no just act do so that's where i would have probably held us
48:59back if
49:00i kept trying to plan everything i would still be in palermo if i if i if you went there
49:04but
49:07you you you're behind the strategy you're like you're very calculated and i think i focus too
49:13much on the present whereas you look so far into the future it helped me see the finish line if
49:18that
49:18made if that makes sense actually joe and kush i feel like you make the mistakes at the beginning
49:23and you learn from those mistakes early on and then you ace it for the final round which is what
49:29i think
49:30you guys basically did try our best yeah especially being being last it's a kick it's a kick up the
49:35kick
49:35up the ass although he sustained a drive to succeed uzbekistan this way she doesn't know he's gone
49:45oh my days kush struggled with his mental health we need to do for this place in no way oh
49:53i feel sick
49:56i think the race was probably the peak of my of my struggles when i was losing the most sleep
50:03the risk of making one wrong choice had such a impact you have a lot to worry about i'm gonna
50:10be
50:10thinking the entire night been such a rough day i had a lot of reminders of my dad and it
50:17dug up a
50:18lot of feelings that i hadn't dealt with we can still do this god
50:24we just can't give up i think a lot of the race involves how you cope with stress because if
50:31you
50:31let the stress get to you you will break and you you can literally you could go home and you
50:37can't
50:37expect to go on a journey and expect it to be all fine but i know you're benefiting from
50:43venting just talking yeah
50:47i just really appreciate the fact that joe's always up for for sort of looking after me in a way
50:59yeah yeah i mean he is he's my best mate
51:05but yeah we we kept each other saying we we we kept moving oh come bro panel spin and we
51:13never gave
51:18up once what wait how did we do that bro i've started seeing a weekly counsellor just to help
51:27process my emotions and i think it's really really helped nothing to do with the race just in day to
51:31life and now i can learn to handle myself a lot better but it's about learning yeah like learning
51:36and life's about learning and learning as you make as you go on better learning now when you're
51:40younger yeah when you're 67. the one thing the race did teach as well is it is actually okay to
51:47ask for help i mean we couldn't have done it without asking for only hundreds of people help us on
51:53our
51:53journey i'm going to pay them what are you serious yeah oh my god oh my god thank you so
52:01much you've
52:01been so much help bro said we could stay at his house what how many times a week do you
52:10read sardine
52:21the people they met and the confidence they gained from them inspired joe to travel independently
52:28taking his first solo trip to the gambia i think yeah the the race definitely encouraged me to continue
52:35traveling and i don't think i would have gone to gambia without it i had to get in contact with
52:39this
52:39family who owned a farm and they look for travelers to come help them work and in return they get
52:46food
52:47a shelter and a family to chill with and that's what i did and i did i explained how i
52:54wanted to
52:55explore explore my heritage and i think they they resonated with that they were they were very caring
53:02what would you like to do next what do you fancy doing we've got no no real plan at the
53:06moment in
53:07terms of the future but i know that we both are going to travel we don't know where yet but
53:11yeah
53:11it's gonna happen at 19 years old you guys have accomplished something so major in your life
53:18i wish i was doing the stuff like this when i was 19. i was just revising for exams that's
53:23my whole life
53:24honestly so proud of you so proud of you from the bottom of our hearts genuinely let's go let's go
53:32this is it bro the race was tough it was tough and it's amazing to know that we we can
53:41get through
53:42it and uh succeed three two one oh my god oh my god oh my god
54:05grow the biggest thing i've taken from the race is that life's to be lived and go and enjoy it
54:12it's
54:13not all be all end all yeah like there is another way and actually the winds end up being a
54:18lot sweeter
54:19because you've dealt with the low you can just do whatever you want and the world is there to be
54:24seen
54:24and put your phone down and actually listen to people can i take you into school and say that
54:32i've got a question for everyone would you do it again yeah absolutely absolutely yeah i'd pay
54:40a lot of money to do it again oh nice look look look it's gorgeous young single available full of
55:01dumpling what more could you want oh where are we going it's definitely the most beautiful drive
55:11i've ever been on my hands highlight wow it's almost mystical isn't it oh my teeny microphone oh look there's
55:19one there oh it's huge you're all right i love you i'm very proud of us i like it epic
55:28absolutely
55:29the end whoo katie what are you doing oh it oh my god oh my god you have won yo
55:41you did it we won
56:04you
56:06you
