00:00U.S. green card applicants will now have to return to home countries to apply, DHS says.
00:07The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, has announced a major policy change
00:14requiring many immigrants seeking green cards to leave the United States and complete the
00:20process through U.S. consulates abroad. The move ends a decades-old system that
00:24allowed many applicants to adjust their status while remaining in the country.
00:30Critics say the policy could separate families, disrupt jobs and worsen existing immigration
00:35backlogs. Aid groups, including HIS, warned that vulnerable immigrants such as trafficking,
00:43survivors and abused children may be forced to return to unsafe countries. The policy is part
00:49of a broader immigration crackdown by President Donald Trump's administration, which has also
00:54tightened visa rules and revoked thousands of visas in recent months.
