How Firefox Took on Internet Explorer and Changed Browsing Forever!
Transcript
00:00Now, just because Mozilla was open source didn't mean that it was free.
00:03In fact, the first versions of Mozilla had to be installed through a paid subscription.
00:08But it did allow users to modify the code and redistribute it without paying Mozilla for it.
00:14But in 2006, they switched to a dual licensing model.
00:18This meant that there would be a paid enterprise license for companies,
00:21but individuals could still use it for free.
00:24And this is when the rise of Firefox began.
00:26In 2002, Internet Explorer controlled 95% of the browser market,
00:32and Firefox only had a 2% market share.
00:35But by 2009, Firefox gained enough popularity to bring down Internet Explorer's market share to below 60%,
00:43and IE never recovered.
00:45So what caused this shift in the browser market?
00:48Well, the biggest thing was that Firefox was open source.
00:51This meant that there were people out there that preferred using Firefox over IE
00:55because they liked having access to the source code.
00:58Not only that, but it gave users a sense of community.
01:01For example, if a user found a bug, they could report it directly to the developers
01:06instead of having to fill out a feedback form on Microsoft's website
01:10and hoping that someone would get around to fixing it.
01:13Not only that, but since Firefox was open source,
01:16there were lots of privacy advocates that preferred using Firefox over IE.
01:21And this led to Firefox having 31.8% market share by 2010.
01:26And in 2015, Google Chrome surpassed Firefox
01:30and became the dominant player in the browser game.
01:33And today, Chrome has 66% of the market,
01:36while Firefox has only 4.5%.
01:39So clearly, Firefox isn't going to catch up to Chrome anytime soon.
