00:02at the recent new market spring meeting the docket club organized a weekend looking at the
00:07aftercare and well-being of the racehorse this weekend also facilitated a seminar which was
00:13titled behind the bridle the seminar hosted a panel who are well versed in the racehorse
00:19from the science of the athlete to developing the workforce who look after our equine stars
00:24the main topic of the seminar was welfare versus well-being Anna and Dara from new market race course
00:33came up the idea of doing something about discussing about well-being and welfare the
00:38difference between them in racehorses and the lives that we give them and to get a panel of experts from
00:44all part of the industry from the breeding world from behavioral scientists to racehorse trainers
00:49to all experienced people who work within people who work with horses I was invited over to speak
00:58which we are delighted to do and the whole equity team is very excited about it it really is unique
01:05in that the industry is you know holding a conversation that wasn't always a comfortable
01:09conversation to have I think it's very positive that the jockey club have done this and you know
01:15it definitely shows their commitment into making changes doing better if we can and you know
01:21getting people in a room that can have a meaningful conversation well we're going to address things
01:27today like welfare versus wellness and what makes a powerbred a good candidate for retraining or rehoming
01:35how do we know that they're you know triving and not just surviving but in you know the whole way
01:42through their their life and it's really important because you know these are questions as an industry
01:47we we have to answer now I wanted really to to just be able to talk about the kind of
01:55holistic side of
01:57the horse's life which this today is about welfare versus well-being riding horses coming from racing horses
02:04uh and one has to look at the the whole picture uh with godolphin we um have helped uh to
02:13start the
02:14international forum the aftercare of race horses uh over 10 years ago now because one of the first
02:19things we looked at was what was happening in each of the countries where we have a footprint and what
02:23wasn't happening i think the outcome is mainly we come to a common agreement of what can be the gold
02:29standard and these days social media and various things that we can actually go out there and show
02:34that people most of them are we do a lot of things every day 24 hours a day to make
02:38sure a horse's life
02:39is a good one and i think from today it'd be nice if we came to a common agreement on
02:43the way forward
02:44and making sure the public know racing knows what we're doing and how we can make it better in the
02:48future
02:50today's event i hope will uh initiate more conversation uh there's a there's a lot of uh initiatives
02:58happening i'd like to see greater alignment with them i'd like to see more purpose behind these
03:04conversations and actions coming from them that will lead to the outcomes uh that our industry needs
03:10the thoroughbred is born is created for our industry there are definitely some industry aspects
03:19and the industry has a responsibility mostly for the vulnerable horses but i think i'd like to see in the
03:25coming months and years more people smiling and happy thinking that they have a horse for life
03:31after that race course experience is over and um and we can really enjoy them in in programs that that
03:38that for which they weren't born but which they're hopefully adaptable to
