00:17over 12 000 kilometers from west to east look at this incredible yeah let's do that on a new

00:34that's a view and a half that you know screensaver vibes to the vast unforgiving wilderness of mongolia
00:41i love how flat it is into like absolute murder they tested their own stamina and endurance

08:48i have a saying
08:49seconds force loser
08:50oh
08:51okay
08:52suddenly i'm just like i need to win this
08:55that's like drawing the enemy lines now
08:57will we get this thing started
08:58yeah
08:59yeah
09:08when we first met you guys in palermo it was like that that couple minutes of hi guys and then
09:14it was off
09:14i don't think i was thinking anything other than can't believe i'm here
09:18yeah yeah
09:19and can't believe i'm about to do this and this backpack's heavy
09:22i hypnotized myself to believe that backpack was really light didn't i
09:25she did
09:26but as soon as i got home what the hell
09:30after the first leg i thought casey and harrison were just going to blow us out the water
09:36you know a day and a half ahead of the first leg you know it's unbelievable
09:40it was it was very intimidating to have you guys so far ahead because we didn't know anything about you
09:44you're a myth
09:47but then when we met you harrison you still impressed your understanding of budgeting and timings and and like this
09:54overview
09:54that was almost like a computer
09:56felt like that
09:57that couldn't turn it off
09:58that is him yeah
10:01i've got a toiletry bag the size of a house
10:05yeah
10:06well i've got all the useful stuff i've got alarm clocks compass
10:10so you just bring you know the stuff you need and i'll bring the stuff for both of us
10:14yeah
10:14oh this you're getting it now
10:17katie and older brother harrison started the race with very different attitudes to money and planning
10:24you definitely took the role with the budget
10:26you're in a deep emotional relationship with your calculator
10:30we have spent 8.5 percent this leg of our total budget
10:35which is very very good
10:38it works being a tight bastard works
10:43pocket meat and cheese
10:46really dry
10:48really dry is an understatement
10:49like i've just stuck my face in the sahara desert
10:52that's so sweet
10:53i took it very personally as my responsibility to get us to that finish line
10:58and it kind of soothed me to constantly be unthinking about it
11:01oh look at this
11:03this is not good for the budget
11:04i've got a shot glass collection at home
11:07who buys all this shit
11:11me
11:13that really took over for me
11:14like i just couldn't help but uh be like absorbed by the race and the race environment and not the
11:19experiences
11:19although the race environment is about winning it's also about the unique way of traveling that you're doing by racing
11:27i genuinely loved every second of it
11:29you know i didn't maybe i didn't have that drive because i was just enjoying it so much
11:33like i just honestly had the best time ever
11:35i think everyone will agree you were pure sunshine the whole way through
11:38i think one day you were like you were sitting with a glass of prosecco at checkpoint being like i
11:42could be at work on a monday
11:46as they ventured further east katie's desire to pause and take it all in
11:51feels very much once in a lifetime
11:55started to shift harrison's perspective on the race
11:58i'm on a horse
12:00in kyrgyzstan
12:03it's incredible
12:05that is just ridiculous
12:07this is stunning
12:19birmingham
12:22our picture of sesco express
12:24tesco
12:25tesco yeah tesco
12:27he was so chuffed with his picture of tesco express
12:30i know such a lovely moment but funny
12:32why am i sat in a treehouse in turkey looking at a picture of tesco
12:35that was kind of when i
12:38sort of let go a little bit and stops and starts to appreciate and spend time
12:43with people and that's really where I came away with the sort of the mantra
12:46that okay this is actually what the race is about oh no no no no you sure
12:51aha what is he giving you it's a medal ah half marathon we are friends but
12:59Harrison actually sent something didn't you yeah I have we got in contact with
13:03the guy that sent me a medal and sent him sending my one back a little east of
13:08UK hamper box yeah you've come back and you've gone like I need to travel and I
13:16do think you have it has like changed you I have to say that I probably do see the
13:20value in it the monetary value in it now I've not spent my own money yet on it but
13:25it might happen I guess you know I've learned that you it firstly it's not like
13:29a holiday well I call it a bit holiday sometimes maybe if you do it Margo's way
13:35their growth as a team came from learning to open up to one another deepening a bond in ways Katie
13:42had
13:42always wanted I don't know I feel I just felt like why is this affecting me and it's not affecting
13:49him
13:49like how does he seem so okay about it all I definitely think the race has helped me like
13:57verbalize like my feelings because before like I might have felt like I wanted to say something to
14:02you you know something bothering me if I was upset or something um but I physically could not get the
14:08words out whereas now I think because yeah the race is just a really intense environment and you've
14:14got to be supportive for each other I just wanted to say um like I suppose thank you for
14:21for being there and being well that's really nice to hear actually I now just feel a lot more
14:29supported yeah like the race gave me a better understanding of you and you a better understanding
14:33of me yeah but but you do grow and you have to and it's a life experience and you have
14:36to accept it
14:37as a life experience and realize and yeah take something from it and and you did yeah yeah
14:45it's a good one for your hinge profile Harrison makes you look really cool I've got a man bag on
14:50though it feels like I'm going to plunge your toilet if it looks that bad could you please try and
14:55help
14:55me together come on oh my god well done my finish line we wouldn't been able to have as good
15:05of a
15:05time with anyone else it was sort of the perfect combo and we've got that for life yeah this is
15:12breathtaking incredible oh wow look at that one the teams were on the road for 51 days absolutely
15:22incredible it's hard to find words isn't it it is absolutely yeah with cameras recording their every
15:28move with them a five person team responsible for capturing the general views known as the GV crew
15:36who filmed the scale beauty and rich variety of the journey if I want to give up teaching there's one
15:44job
15:45I would want to have is the crew they do all those picturesque shots and what a job to be
15:50able to do
15:50we're shooting Athens out today we've been up here since half six this morning big bank of
15:57cloud came in and kind of killed us a little bit but sometimes it helps it came out and like
16:02created
16:03all these shadows across the city but thankfully the weather has picked up Sun is shining
16:12the team that take these incredible shots really get to be creative and think about how to capture this
16:19beautiful area in the best way possible which is what you see on the screens so they essentially
16:25inspire the whole of the UK and whoever watches a race across the world to want to go to these
16:29places by the way they capture it on camera wow look at this we're going to shoot this time-lapse
16:38over the
16:39mountains it is beautiful here the landscape is incredible and it's happy they've got so much
16:49stuff right got long distance cameras wide shot lenses they've got close-ups they've got everything
16:55yeah they smashed it
17:00alongside the GV crew there are three more vital teams dovetailing seamlessly to bring the race to
17:06life comms check in London a 20 strong team of producers researchers and production management
17:16following evolving stories and potential routes you've got someone who is relaying back every
17:22decision everything we say to the head office in London who obviously on UK time it feels like the brain
17:31of
17:32of control center control center there you go I'm thinking about it medically but they're like the
17:36brain of race across the world and then you have like the limbs in on location a small embedded
17:43filming crew living and breathing every step of the race with each pair how are you feeling
17:49wearing it I think that's your duvet Aaron that's the smaller one the bigger one should be the
17:55sheet oh you're gonna put your lavender spray on it and finally the checkpoint crew who are one step
18:04ahead of the racers tracking their every move and planning for all eventualities but Joe and
18:11Kush I've got 10 a.m. do you think that's right yeah I think about 60 minutes away there's a
18:16whole team
18:16that stays in the checkpoint and they've got their own job to do if they go the most efficient way
18:21they'll get a car all the way up to there but there are various other points that they could get
18:26dropped on the hill they are responsible for setting up and testing the final run to each new
18:33checkpoint hotel and there to support each team on their arrival say hi Hannah give me the camera
18:49what's your what's your role Hannah my role is to look after cars when they're at checkpoint make
18:55sure they're fed watered happy healthy that's it once the planning's done it's over to the race
19:05unpredictable unscripted and whatever happens whenever teams arrive the crew has to be ready
19:11we are here at the finale location and we are just waiting for one of the teams to come in
19:16where the
19:17spit is there's a direct line of sight so we don't want the cars to see us so we're having
19:21to lie down and
19:23hide voiced for the signal okay go go go go everyone that is a spit isn't it yeah when you're
19:35coming
19:35into checkpoint it gets really exciting doesn't it ah here we go I'm about to have sent messages into
19:44these devices for the runway finally amphitheater and the way further instructions to find a minute
19:55right I think it's at the other side of the bridge okay ready power everything up
20:03is this right yeah oh the two blocks in there yeah
20:15it's it's all that things fired look at that revolting here it is job please silent here
20:43as the checkpoint is approached the reality of each precious minute falls into focus
20:50lads we're gonna beat you no way come on with every team throwing their all into the chance to climb
20:59the
20:59leaderboard hey go speed up lad you okay buddy I'm good pushy faster faster we've got a checkpoint to
21:07get to get me out of this taxi and ready to run traffic jump it just felt like tables turn
21:15so
21:15quickly we can't afford to make any mistakes and we've already made one the crew can give you
21:20absolutely no help and it can be like very easy to go like guys you're giving me nothing here but
21:25they can't because then it's not fair this is actually a joke oh that's what's going on because
21:30they don't know they had to walk through every stupid decision we made knowing we were going in
21:36the wrong direction well actually we're kind of going back on ourselves yeah oh god but having
21:43the lead is one bus journey away big money moves big money moves right little money moves it's right
21:48there yes come on hope and pray now we were looking out for the boys because we noticed you becoming
21:58more savvy and more competitive because you said from the first we're in it we're really seriously in
22:04it to win it but there's more and more like we're not going to talk to you you could be
22:07a threat and
22:08and and it was these guys you guys because you're clever that's the thing wolfies are very very like
22:12but quite quickly you were like zoop here are the boys how are we do you know where you're going
22:17now
22:18yeah all right you guys you got a plan yeah we have a plan yeah are we allowed to know
22:22where you're
22:22heading to it do they're trying to present funds they're trying to get information out see you
22:27boys we'll see you guys soon oh no best friends last night sworn enemies yeah oh we were there to
22:37win
22:37really we we are we whether i've been saying this from this we both have been saying this from the
22:41start we were there to win i think i have that's a win you just want to do better than
22:45everyone else
22:50we're 10 short is there any way we could change money i don't know where there was a situation
22:55where um molly and andrew were 10 euros short you wouldn't give us a tenner for a tenner no
23:00oh that's a shame i thought that that's a shame and i was like nah realistically we're here to win
23:06i feel like we should not belong no oh what are you trying you were very very down to to
23:13just lend
23:13a bit of money i'm i'm i'm glad we didn't give any money i'm glad set a precedent i'm busy
23:19i would
23:20very much say that your experience was to win and you really enjoyed it and the whole way through
23:25we were very competitive obviously but we were forced we were trying our hardest we're still coming
23:30in and um like we were constantly the back of the pack back of the pack and it's about staying
23:35in it
23:35people talk about strategies if we had any strategy coming into this was to stay in the game as long
23:40as
23:40possible and then try and win it at the end and that's what we did yeah were you two right
23:45behind
23:45each other at the final night not speaking to you again that's all right that's okay the gloves are
23:52off but there's a good good amount of luck and like i think like the favorite moments for me and
23:59it sounds so sad but it was when like connecting transport just worked out honest to god like i just
24:05couldn't relax until i knew what transport was going on elimination leg mr meanie made us wait for a bus
24:11i decided on budget terms that we should wait and get the bus rather than pay the taxi
24:16and we waited three three and a half hours three and a half hours for a bus you should have
24:21waited 12
24:27smile
24:30your shoes get wet wet shoe i love my feet right now they're very happy
24:36the cousins embarked on the race to step away from the busy careers they'd worked hard to build
24:41and embrace a more unpredictable way of life pepperoncino calabrese this is different
24:49rosh is absolutely smashing it she's maintained her energy levels look at her she's so cute
24:57what are you doing so growing up you know we lived like two streets away we were like very close
25:13but
25:14life happens i think the goal of just going on to this is we'd both been in our careers for
25:19like 10
25:19years um so life gets very intense and we wanted to do something about that this guy he is a
25:27guard
25:28of the gods okay he's waving i've always wanted to take time off but there's always been a reason
25:34not to so i guess race kind of forced us to take the time off and it kind of it
25:38it showed that it's
25:39not the end of the world where are you going ah oh sorry what time is the buff yes yes
25:50i'm feeling
25:51pumped we're flying high i think we've handled ourselves really well on this leg i'm excited posh
25:58we're second we're second
26:03it's been a wake-up call with family you always think people are going to be around but actually
26:08you need to put in that effort to make sure you keep that relationship and you know we just we
26:14wanted to make sure this didn't break us and it's actually made us stronger yeah but their momentum
26:20faltered in turquia we asked about buses tonight but unfortunately there wasn't anything available
26:25it gives the other teams time to catch up and arriving in last at the third checkpoint
26:31led to their surprise elimination please sign in overleaf oh oh my god we're lost
26:46i think when we saw the book we didn't expect that everybody would have done so well on that leg
26:54but
26:54you guys aced it but saying that it was a great leg like we had an incredible time and honestly
27:01mongolia was for you guys like i'm so happy that you guys had that adventure thank you also we got
27:07to
27:07go on our own adventure yeah we went on a trip to vietnam after all of this ended
27:14it was just a great place wait we got to have really good food get massages yeah we just had
27:24our own experience we planned to go away together again with our husbands with our families so if this
27:32had not happened i don't think we would be doing that i don't think we would be as proactive yeah
27:37you think about like what race and travel has given each one of us that has brought you together
27:43and like my wife has said me like who are you traveling with all that kind of thing and i'd
27:47say
27:47like beautiful girl who's an anesthetist and i go i just want molly to turn out like you
27:52and i mean that are just amazing and lifelong friends hopefully and absolutely we missed you though
27:59honestly we wanted to sign your names in the book oh
28:10that is amazing for all the teams this was a journey defined by endurance and extremes look look
28:18look oh that is really nice you can see the whole coast from the sun-baked coastlines of europe
28:23to the untamed expanse of central asia oh my god oh look at this it is like the wild west
28:33mark
28:33look at it isn't it yeah into the sub-zero temperatures of mongolia oh feel the cold
28:42retracing a path steeped in history along the old silk road
28:46they encountered a huge variety of people and local customs
28:52my father oh hello hello nice to meet you hello hello hello hello nice to meet you
28:57my father is just such a like extreme is it like you just started off in like central mainland europe
29:13where that you had all the comforts really of home and and then going to just it literally
29:19millennia is mad once you left europe yes and wake to kazakhstan it was an alien environment it was
29:28rocky it was dry it was arid and from that point yeah it was a completely different journey but even
29:35from the trains did you you must have got to see like scenery nothing there's absolutely nothing
29:41it's like being on the moon i can't describe it there is nothing there
29:44you really throughout the whole experience went from one to the other done it went from language
29:52to no language do you have afto um car machine after after lots of transport to no transport yeah
30:01the bus it's all closed yeah yes i found the bus station it's just a shed holy moly traffic jam
30:12look at them there's millions of them yeah i i'd say this year race is very much extreme
30:17that's the word to sum it up i think it's just so nice that you just you're worried that ah
30:23they
30:23don't don't speak the same language but you find a way to communicate like whether it's you dancing
30:28with everyone or you know our man with the tesco like you you like yeah you find common ground you'll
30:35always find a way to communicate that was like the most beautiful thing yeah yeah when we did all these
30:40homestays like to live and sleep on the same roof share the food like this is such a privilege
30:45it's even more of a privilege in my eyes than being able to afford like the five star hotels
30:50no they treated us like family
30:55oh my god you've done that so well thank you
31:02places that we went we were very different to the western world
31:05it was a real it was a culture shock in the coolest way this is a really big deal
31:10oh my god there's an eagle
31:14nice to meet you my name is naskud naskud kush it's nice to meet you
31:18your eyes are so beautiful thank you
31:23i love the outfits this is what i think we're both searching for on
31:26in this journey as a whole is the experiences that aren't readily accessible
31:37it's very bitter i quite like it delicious look at him delicious good he's very good yeah
31:45but when we got to mongolia it really got hard for us we really struggled it felt like your choices
31:53were kind of taken away from you because at the start it was kind of do you go by boat
31:57do you
31:57go by train do you go by car do you go by taxi it then just became get there you
32:02couldn't be
32:02competitive with each other you were just being competitive against mongolia yeah it's the best
32:06way to put it is that you were fighting the elements i think like the temperature swing the
32:10whole way we figured out was like a 54 degree temperature swing from hottest to coldest and it's
32:14just i was looking forward to the the cold but maybe not that cold maybe i maybe i wish too
32:20hard for that like your clothes had to change yeah your clothes for italy greece and wild
32:28temperatures and then all of a sudden those clothes just kind of you should just throw them out we
32:32couldn't just throw them out had less weight to carry no just layering up just layering up
32:36mongolia just wore the same outfit every single day yes i did and all your clothes yeah honestly
32:41did you change your clothes in mongolia because i didn't know but as somebody who's only kind of
32:48really gone on family holidays yeah i really really struggled with the the did i have the ability
32:55to put a backpack on me and travel in that way uh always wanted to do it as a child
33:01always wanted to
33:01do it as a as a young person i never did it because it was pure want to do it
33:05but it was a fear yes kind
33:07of stopped you doing it before it was a physical test as well as a mental test one of the
33:13reasons i did
33:14lack self-confidence and in my ability to do it was was the heart attack and the heart attack put
33:19me
33:19back kind of mentally quite a bit i'm starting off in system my god it'd be amazing for andrew the
33:29race
33:29became a way to see the world look at that molly absolutely stunning and prove his heart attack three
33:36years ago wouldn't hold him back i would always say to children uh in in class the world's your
33:43oyster go and enjoy it but i never lived it and i was always kind of a bit of a
33:48fraud that way
33:58the relief of getting to that first checkpoint yeah and signing that book yeah give me the shot in
34:05the arm i looked at you and said we can do this the stamina's there we can enjoy it as
34:10well we could
34:10enjoy it it's my first train in italy molly you know my love of trains look at the striations of
34:17the
34:17rock the weather going down the lines oh my god never seen these before ever different way of
34:23doing it total different way of doing beekeeping and there's your honey seeing the mountains seeing
34:28the landscape seeing where people live that's what i do that's what i love
34:34really looking forward to getting out in the kayak i have my own kayak in at home but i've never
34:39actually
34:40used it because of my uh dickie ticker my dickie ticker so uh haven't been able to do it so
34:45yeah be lovely
34:51out the open water look at those mountains
35:02i wanted to do that for a long time kid to prove to me that i could uh that wasn't
35:11gonna get me
35:22it was so nice to kind of have with kayaking and like just that whole thing to us was just
35:28really special
35:29like you kind of have to cherish those moments it's very important to cherish those moments
35:33just enjoy it and that's i think i tried to say that to everyone i absolutely enjoy it
35:37we've actually been kayaking since i've actually booked a trip we're going to uh norway with my wife
35:45i think that whole rocky coast all the way up there would be unbelievable yeah
35:51and we've booked kayaking in the fjords oh wow that'll be beautiful
35:58i don't want to be stuck in a train station for molly the race was an opportunity to find her
36:04own path in
36:05life and prove her independence is there a bus to kiva both no taxi taxi taxi i don't know what
36:13to do
36:13i don't know before the race i would have found it very difficult those big decisions i'd have
36:20overthought it i would have i would have got annoyed myself especially if it went wrong i don't want 100
36:26i won 70 70 70. daddy he's there for 70. well done good call yeah i do think now i
36:37am a wee bit more
36:39self-confident that contentment has come with my decisions people need their doctor to be confident
36:45because that's who you're looking to for answers so it's really nice to sleep at night and not have
36:50thoughts and thoughts and thoughts it was a definite change in molly towards the end yeah
36:56there was a strong sense of more confidence yeah and more decidedness
37:18i think pre-race we kind of proved to each other and like in life we proved to each other
37:23we're good
37:23as father and daughter and i think race the one thing that allowed us to prove to each other is
37:28we're a good
37:28team and that is we can make decisions we can have equal opinion and hold each other and be like
37:35yeah no that's good that's bad and communicate we've done we did it we did it all right
37:48still be her daddy for the rest of my life but also it'll be uh it'll be more of a
37:53of a friendship and
37:54and a pile yeah absolutely there's features of beauty isn't there yeah it's good stone look mega
38:05also looking to strengthen their bond and find a new dynamic in-laws mark and margot oh wow i'd
38:13love to have a go at one of these i know you come on you get one i get one
38:16um going with mark though i i really wanted this but i i there was a little bit we weren't
38:24completely
38:24comfortable were we not at all no uh i found her annoying margot thought i was a boring
38:33old fogey basically judgy and boring judgy and boring yes yeah you may all know julie's last dying
38:39wish was that we became friends we continued and build our friendship and that's what we did
38:45i love naples absolutely brilliant place i hate it i loath naples i just didn't enjoy it at all
38:53i did think how's it going to go with mark how are we going to be on the race and
38:58i have to say some
38:58people were a little bit doubtful about the two of us doing it together they were a little bit why
39:04are
39:04you going with mark what in god's name it's a white cocoon what what's it for what did you what
39:11what
39:12it's modesty so i think it was ridiculous but as the race progressed we didn't have a care in the
39:20world did we not caring the world yeah try hitting it flat on like that oh okay okay
39:32now we're talking now we are talking
39:39we're just two people enjoying the moment yeah and we were just having a bit of a laugh weren't we
39:45we were yes and it just organically just grew the last two legs of it was so hard in mongolia
39:57that's when the real it was the real cement between us because it's that's when it was
40:01we we were on our knees and we just and we needed each other and we both needed
40:05to really pull together didn't we and support each other yeah
40:12nope not the busiest of highways is it no if you miss a rush hour we had to suffer i
40:20think we had
40:21to suffer and push and strive for it really to be the adventure that it was and for it to
40:28truly make
40:30us unite and have each other's back we're doing blue sky thinking today that's all we can do
40:38you know this determination to finish the side of margot i'd never seen before it's what kept me
40:44going just about do you go to harcorden yes oh good so kind thank you off we go we're doing
40:52it our way
40:52and we never ever give up as a team we've always carried on we've always forged on and i'm so
40:59proud
41:00of her for doing that you know i would have given up i would have given up without margot being
41:05there
41:05i wouldn't give up on you though mark and they wouldn't and that was so that was that's a sign
41:10of friendship uh here's to you julia wherever you are yeah who inspired us who inspired us thank you
41:18julia yeah thank you julia she's laughing for margot traveling was also an opportunity to step away from
41:28her day-to-day routine part of coming on the race was like running away from real life and just
41:33enjoying
41:34myself and just be me for a change and just go let rip taking respite from her responsibilities
41:41like caring for her elderly mum since i've got back from the race i've been more centered i did
41:49feel like dorothy coming back in the wizard of arts you know coming home and that there is no place
41:53like home i was kind of in a way running away from my situation in life but now actually the
42:00determination
42:00i was applying to those challenges i've applied them to my life the bbc bbc yes race across the world
42:10to make things nicer to make things easier and so i'm living that best life but in liverpool oh my
42:18goodness for mark the race also became something more oh my gosh
42:25shifting his perspective on life itself it's unbelievable this wildness it's strange to say
42:33you know at 67 i was always embarrassed about doing things i thought what people might say what people
42:39might think i just couldn't care less now anyway because margot she's very open and very free and
42:45doesn't worry what people think about her and i've taken that on board you were first on the dance floor
42:50in sri lanka as well he led he led the party oh it was yes yeah the bailer yeah you
42:57know for us
42:57we were winners because we don't want to set out to do and we'd won for julia that was the
43:02thing
43:03yes yes we are good good friends we're mates now we are yeah do you think you'd go on holiday
43:08again
43:10well we've been talking about it yes we have been talking about it and we'd like adventure we do
43:15want to be we we are definitely up for adventure like it's so nice that you have that relationship
43:19together and you've built that for julia like wherever she is now i'm sure she's very happy to
43:25see you both like this it's almost like she was on the race with you yeah she was on the
43:29race yeah
43:31it's a lovely legacy lovely legacy
43:40arriving in mongolia the filming teams faced one of the toughest environments the race had come up
43:47against navigating extreme weather and limited infrastructure after months of meticulous planning
44:01planning of mongolia it must have been a huge endeavor for everyone we're here we're mongolia it's
44:06all very exciting we've got this massive map of uh the country that our level fixers have um lent us
44:13and we basically have just got all of the stops and the potential places we think that the cast might
44:18be headed we just need to make sure we know where all the teams are at all times
44:22to ensure safety production members keep the teams trackable and in sight whenever they travel by car
44:28and what are called follow vehicles so this is day 42 of race across the world and i'm in our
44:37sb
44:38following the cast and crew they are over here i'm currently wrangling yesterday's rushes
44:47uh this is my office uh this is my office that's the final two weeks of race and this just
44:53feels like
44:54an absolute privilege and pleasure to be here filming this it's in the middle of nowhere but
45:02i actually currently can't hear them because we've got so many devices plugged into
45:08we've got walkies we've got phones we've got garments currently the only way we can contact the
45:15sv is with our garment so yes we're on our road
45:28yes
45:29right weather again we may need six twenty minus 25 degrees it's going to be called stay covered
45:36properly yeah
45:39well
45:43while we're in here in mongolia it's cold during the day and even colder at night so
45:47we need quick access to extra layers after sunset from italy to mongolia we've gone from
45:53plus 30 down to minus 30 which in itself brings new problems where italy was sunburn here with hypothermia
46:03to battle the sub-zero conditions everyone on the ground had to be equipped with extreme
46:08cold weather gear this is where we slept last night but the stove was off
46:14it's exceptionally lots of layers on it is quite extreme here the worst part of the entire night
46:19was doing snoring guys that's such a few that is your snoring your snoring it's colder than than i
46:26had expected that about you the coats we had the outfits like we'd put your hood up and pull the
46:32zip
46:32ties and you'd literally have a little space like this to look through like it was it was bad it
46:38was
46:38it was fun yeah but i think i think i grossly underestimated how cold it was gonna be
46:44end in mongolia was just crazy it is so cold yeah oh my god where are you going i don't
46:54have a clue
46:56there's just such vastness and so many random things can happen so for the crew the amount of
47:02planning needed to try and get 10 idiots to race across the world is insane
47:11i mean when we when we started uh this whole journey we was all we always said we were like
47:15when we travel we want to live it but me and joe have never really we spent some time together
47:19being like little holidays but it's never been more than like what like a week two weeks we've
47:23ever spent at the same time and so it was nothing to what i'd imagined this is important slides
47:31and these comfort comfort is your best friend those are old man shoes down there those are old man
47:38shoes eager to make every second count fresh out of college joe and cush wanted to explore life
47:45beyond the familiar world they were raised in by their mums in liverpool this is our plan this is our
47:52security which i'm gonna be taken charge of we still need to be on it with kush sometimes
47:58we've got our passports yeah yeah excuse me what are you trying to say love pool's a small place
48:05we've gone up to city don't get me wrong but it's kind of like you still don't scale
48:11like how probably the world is i mean coming into this once we applied we realized we are probably
48:15going to be the youngest so i think with youth comes this uh this preconception of like a lack of
48:22maturity um lack of life experience we see ourselves as the underdogs we see ourselves
48:28as the yeah the least capable and i think it's flipped in it yes 3 a.m in the morning
48:37i don't
48:39think any change could have done it faster don't judge about by his cover i think one thing about
48:45me and joe's we are actually we're good at different things we work well with what the
48:48other personal actors and like me i'm i sort of overthought a lot and i was like ah we have
48:52to do with
48:53everything and think of it in a specific way and some and joe would be like no just act do
48:57so that's
48:58where i would have probably held us back if i'd kept trying to plan everything i would still be in
49:02palermo if i if i if you weren't there but you you you're behind the strategy you're like you're
49:10very calculated and i think i focus too much on the present whereas you look so far into the future
49:16it helped me see the finish line if that makes it if that makes sense actually joe and kush i
49:21feel
49:21like you make the mistakes at the beginning and you learn from those mistakes early on and then you
49:26ace it for the final round which is what i think you guys basically did try their best yeah especially
49:32being being being last it's a kick it's a kick up the kick up the ass although he sustained a
49:39drive to
49:39succeed uzbekistan this way she doesn't know he's gone oh my days kush struggled with his mental health
49:49we need to do for this price in no way oh i feel sick
49:56i think the race was probably the peak of my of my strolls when i was losing the most sleep
50:03the risk of making one wrong choice had such a impact you have a lot to worry about i'm gonna
50:10be thinking the entire night been such a rough day i had a lot of reminders of my dad and
50:16it dug up a
50:17lot of feelings that i hadn't dealt with we can still do this god we just can't give up i
50:26think a lot of
50:27race involves how you cope with stress because if you let the stress get to you you will break and
50:34you can literally you could go home and you can't expect to go on a journey and expect it to
50:38be all
50:39fine but i know you're benefiting from venting just talking yeah
50:47i just really appreciate the fact that joe's always up for for sort of looking after me in a way
50:58yeah yeah i mean he is he's my best mate
51:05but yeah we we kept each other saying we we kept moving oh come bro panel spin and we never
51:14gave up once
51:18what wait how did we do that bro
51:24i've started seeing a weekly counsellor just to help process my emotions and i think it's really
51:28really helped nothing to do with the race just in in day-to-day life and now i can learn
51:32to handle
51:32myself a lot better but it's about learning yeah it likes learning and life's about learning and
51:37learning as you make as you go on better learning now when you're younger yeah and when you're 67.
51:44the one thing the race did teach as well is it is actually okay to ask for help i mean
51:47we couldn't
51:48have done it without asking for only hundreds of people helped us on our journey okay i'm gonna pay
51:54them what are you serious yeah oh my god oh my god oh my god thank you so much you've
52:01been so much
52:02help don't say we can stay at his house what like to be stop in yakino out of your fire
52:08in a family
52:09how many time a week do you eat sardine five five time a week is that very strong yeah yes
52:15no gym no no
52:16you need nothing the people they met and the confidence they gained from them inspired joe to
52:26travel independently taking his first solo trip to the gambia i think yeah the the race definitely
52:33encouraged me to continue traveling i don't think i would have gone to gambia without it i had to get
52:38in contact with this family who owned a farm and they look for travelers to come help them work
52:45and in return they get food a shelter and a family to chill with and that's what i did and
52:51i did i explained how i wanted to explore explore my heritage and i think they they resonated with
52:59that they were they were very caring what would you like to do next what do you fancy doing we've
53:05got no no real plan at the moment in terms of if the future but i know that we both
53:09are going to
53:09travel we don't know where yet but yeah it's gonna happen at 19 years old you
53:14guys have accomplished something so major in your life i wish i was doing the stuff like this when
53:19i was 19. i was just revising for exams that's my whole life honestly so proud of you so proud
53:27of
53:27you from the bottom of our hearts genuinely let's go let's go this is it bro
53:37it was tough and it's amazing to know that we we can get through it and uh succeed three two
53:45one
53:53i feel this race is bigger than the degree you're you're actually joking
54:06the biggest thing i've taken from the race is that uh life's to be lived and go and enjoy it
54:12it's not all be all end all yeah like there is another way and actually the winds end up being
54:18a
54:18lot sweeter because you've dealt with the low you can just do whatever you want and the world is there
54:23to be seen and put your phone down and actually listen to people can i take you into school and
54:30say
54:32i've got a question for everyone would would you do it again yeah absolutely absolutely yeah i'd pay
54:40a lot of money a lot of money to do it again oh nice
54:56it's gorgeous young single available full of dumpling what more could you want
55:05oh where are we going
55:09it's definitely the most beautiful drive i've ever got on my hands highlight wow it's almost mystical
55:14isn't it oh my teeny microphone oh look there's one there oh it's huge
55:22you're all right i love you i'm very proud of us i'm proud i'm proud i think absolutely
55:28you're doing the end whoo katie what are you doing oh it
55:40you did it we won
