00:00but right now we got to get over to the phone lines because when you got a five-time champion
00:04on the show and you got a three-time champion calling in man you just got to hear the fireworks
00:10between them all ladies and gentlemen welcoming to the show he is an nba analyst he is a three-time
00:16champion he is the one and only danny green danny welcome to derrick and decker my guy
00:22thank you man appreciate the intro nice little fan noise in the background making me feel special
00:30dude what's up good man good man appreciate you hopping on dude i i got asked right out the
00:38great right out the gate daddy just how are you digging these playoffs i bet both fish and i
00:42have been going back and forth like some years we had like lackluster years dude this this playoff
00:47run so far has just been banger after banger after banger man yeah i'm really i mean i'm loving the
00:54playoffs um it's unfortunate last night there were a couple of injuries hopefully nothing major we'll
01:00find out today i'm sure shams is going to put it out but said it'd be nothing short of of
01:04amazing
01:05right you know some nail biters some overtime games both sides some dull moments you know to start but
01:11ultimately overall like the playoffs have been great you know so i'm looking forward to even tonight's
01:16game to see what cleveland does in new york um but the okc san antonio series is a good one
01:22and as i said hopefully nobody's injured and everybody can be healthy and play
01:28danny like take us through what team you were on that this spurs team reminds you of the most
01:38oh um so it's hard to compare because wimby is just so unique right he's one of a kind there's
01:47nobody
01:47this guy's putting up shots to put back his own shot like he's throwing up on one side
01:51to dunk it on the other side and it's like what he's doing doesn't look real then you got stefan
01:55castle who had probably the nastiest dunk i've ever seen in the playoffs last night like you don't see
02:01many guards have that type of explosion like ja moran russell westbrook you know derrick rose those
02:05the ones in the conversation that come to mind um so i've never got a chance to play like play
02:11with
02:11ja or having a explosive guard like that but the depth of this team it reminds me um probably more
02:19of
02:19our lakers team i guess because we had some we had so many bigs though like wimby is equivalent to
02:24like three of our bigs we have ad javel dwight coming off the bench like you had guys that could
02:29protect the rim like that and then we had you know on the wings alex caruso kcp myself avery bradley
02:36like the list goes on rondo coos bron like the list goes on just how much depth they were but
02:43when it
02:43comes to personality and comes to system and how they move the ball and play together it was definitely
02:48a san antonio team like it and i and i was thinking of the day somebody asked me like if
02:52it was a
02:53seven game series between you this young san antonio team and your old san antonio team
02:56what would you think would happen and i'm like well we have more experience we probably were very
03:02you know well-oiled machine but i think they have more depth than we had like off our bench we
03:07you know mono came off the bench but he really was a starter and then you had i think at
03:11the time
03:12that we run it was like bellinelli mostly and then maybe like boris like tiago i think started
03:16with timmy and then i think boris is boris and mono mostly and then like bellinelli on the wing
03:20we didn't have like a bunch of depth you gotta have we have a guy like bill and harper come
03:25off
03:25the bench who can finish at the rim the way he does with both hands and control the tempo and
03:30be a
03:30point guard then you got you know guys that very like a super vet harrison barnes could give you great
03:36minutes the cornet off the bench like and also kelden johnson who's six man of the year it's hard to
03:42compete with that type of depth of a team but they have similarities to some of the both the
03:48groups that i've played on uh championships the lakers and san antonio uh we are of course talking
03:52with danny green three-time nba champion with the lakers spurs and raptors of course he's a host of
03:58inside the green room with harrison sanford uh danny those three rings you got i mean i know we're in
04:05la but honestly of those three rings la spurs and raptors which one of those was the one that
04:10meant the most to you man people access all the time and the knowledge i give them did you have
04:16kids i i luckily do not but that's because i'd be a terrible father oh okay same question same
04:23thing this is the same thing i respond this way exactly go ahead go ahead it's like which one do
04:31you think is the more meaningful birth you know which which kid is the more like they're all
04:35different experiences but you know the birth process of having them and you know raising them
04:40it's they're different but you love them all the same you know so like it's hard to say i have
04:44a
04:45favorite this or favorite that and i would say well the bubble was the hardest the most fun i had
04:49was
04:50in toronto and of course the first one is the swedish you'll never forget that so like we we had
04:55lost
04:55in miami and got a chance to come back um you know with a little bit of a vengeance and
05:00redeem
05:00ourselves in 2014 so they all had different routes different ways i love them all the same but they
05:06all were special in their own kind of category way dg what what what was the transition like for you
05:13man
05:13you know i'm getting into this radio thing and more into broadcasting what was that transition like
05:18for you was it a struggle how did you turn that page from playing to to what was next in
05:23life
05:23yeah i was actually gonna try to talk about this because man i've been watching you and like you know
05:29look at the media so different now when you become a part of it obviously i always respected it um
05:34i
05:34went to school for it i went four years of school at carolina was a communications major just in case
05:38basketball didn't work out because i was good but i was a late bloomer i wasn't one of those guys
05:42that
05:42was for sure going to go to the nba um and i had started the podcast with with inside the
05:48green
05:48rehearsing about almost eight years now so that helped me with the transition and going to the
05:53sportscaster you in syracuse that's where they did it at the time now i think they moved it to usc
05:58so i've been preparing for but even with that it's not easy it wasn't easy and it's not easy for
06:03most guys when they stop playing to go into the next field of life yeah chapter of the job um
06:08but
06:08man i that made it easier it was intimidating like when i'm espn with malika and shanae and perk like
06:14my first year was like damn i gotta keep up with these great like they're really good they're articulate
06:19they're good with their energy they know how to get their takes in certain time i'm like
06:22they're in my ear i'm like them trying not to be distracted make sure i get my 20 seconds in
06:27and then also now that i'm calling games i'm watching d fish i'm like this guy's fucking
06:30amazing i excuse my language this guy's really good man i'm like damn i gotta keep up with this
06:36no i'm like i gotta watch and listen you know to all the guys calling the game like d fish
06:40is you
06:41know he's good with his work make sure i change my vocabulary a little bit try not to do the
06:44same
06:44thing i'm like him breaking down the game and how he talks the game like i'm learning from each person
06:49so it's becoming easier but at first it's it's it's challenging but i you know it's just like any other
06:54thing you do just like sports you love the competitive nature and you love the challenge
06:58so you're gonna be great at it so i'm picking and you know everybody's brain and choosing
07:01who to follow and watch and like who i like to see from like how they break things down it's
07:05like
07:05man i like that trying to take pieces of it just like you were doing basketball yeah and it's getting
07:09easier for me but it's still a challenge man and i'm and i'm learning but the more reps the better
07:13you
07:13are at it you know i'm trying to get more minutes on the road it's kind of like driving so
07:17you get
07:17more comfortable behind the wheel uh but yeah i've been learning a lot but it was not an easy
07:21transition to start even though that i had some background in it so i can imagine how it was for
07:24guys that didn't study it or like take any classes for it 97 one the fan los angeles you're listening
07:30to derrick and decker right now and on the line we have danny green three-time nba champion lakers
07:35spurs raptors of course host of inside the green room with harrison sanford and danny i gotta i gotta ask
07:41you man uh we're going into this offseason a lot of questions with the lakers specifically one of
07:46which is really surrounding austin reeves what are your thoughts of what this team can and should
07:52do with austin reeves to hopefully get over the hump that is okc or the spurs
07:58oh man this is a tough question uh i like austin a lot i think he's very talented i think
08:04he's
08:04uh an amazing player he's incredible he's taking leaps and bounds each year he's getting better which
08:09is like hard to do when he's like year five or six like he's got some years now year six
08:12or so
08:12um and keep getting better at this time in your life in your career it was like
08:16an incredible feat i think he's great i think him and luca together are really good i don't know
08:23i think you have to make a decision on bron first right before you figure that out but i don't
08:27think
08:28you can lose an asset like that for nothing like you have to keep him and he's definitely a max
08:33player
08:34but is he a max player that you can trust to be number two and win you a championship with
08:38luca like
08:39i think they're great but pairing them together when bron is gone it'll be tough unless you can
08:44surround them with a lot of really good pieces right i think austin realistically or best case
08:51scenario for him is a good third option for a championship team you know and with bron there
08:58and them two kind of gives them a good balance they do they still have to find some bigs that
09:02can you
09:03know help them or relate with luca be a lob threat i think jackson hayes is good he's just young
09:08and still learning and deandre even had a solid season just certain playoff moments that people
09:13were not happy with um but you know those two you got to surround them with the right pieces
09:18and again i think you have to kind of solve or figure out what you want to do with bron
09:22and if
09:22he's able to come back at a fair fair deal then you have some room to wiggle to keep some
09:26other guys
09:27and it seems like all the good free agents are on the lakers the lakers are out like ruey you
09:33know
09:33austin uh marcus smart like these are guys that are really good pieces that good years that people
09:38are going to go after that you kind of want to retain but i'd like austin's game he's definitely
09:43worth the max it's just is he going to fit with luca just them two and bron is gone to
09:48win a
09:48championship if you have enough money or space to get guys around them to help them win but i think
09:54austin is really good he's a really good player and i think he's best bet like in a third option
09:59space
10:00absolutely you brought up lebron james right there we have some great sound lebron james coming up we
10:05cannot wait to play for you guys in just a moment dg the tell us about how you feel about
10:13the knicks
10:13man and you know you're from new york you know what i mean like you never played for the knicks
10:19but
10:19like i know are you rocking with the knicks how you feeling i'm i'm i'm i'm i'm try to i
10:24try to be an
10:25unbiased guy yeah and um i don't remember if you remember this defense but some years ago when i was
10:30almost a free agent it was very brief um you were coaching there and i almost i didn't get a
10:34chance
10:35to actually go through the recruiting process and because san antonio was they were on top of it
10:40yeah you were on the list though i can tell you that i was on the list but i grew
10:46up in new york but
10:47i didn't grow up a knicks fan my dad was a fan of certain players and he was also a
10:52fan of like the
10:52good teams i don't want to call him a bandwagoner but he he was a michael jordan fan you know
10:58he liked
10:58the pittsburgh still like only team that we liked in new york was the yankees so i grew up liking
11:02the
11:02yankees he likes him he likes more new york sports now like the mets and other teams but we didn't
11:07grow up a knicks fan because you know we watch mike mike used to kill the knicks and you know
11:11he
11:11talked trash all his friends about being a knicks fan so i want to see the city thrive i want
11:16the city
11:16needs it i'm rocking with the knicks but i didn't grow up a knicks fan but they're playing really good
11:21basketball right now game one was ugly a little rusty but prior to that they've been playing really
11:26good basketball and i'm actually rooting for them because a lot of my friends here you know that
11:29they've been dying to see a championship they've been dying to see if they've seen a final to 99
11:34but um yeah i'm rocking with the knicks this is the year if they're going to get it done this
11:37is the
11:38year to do it because after this year you know okc is only getting better wemby is only he's here
11:43like he's not he's not coming he's here so like next year the west i think the championship
11:48or lyre o'brien is going to live in the west for the next decade like the next eight seven
11:53to eight
11:53maybe 10 years with those two teams and other teams in the west getting better so the next time
11:58is right now and i would love to see them you know get to the finals and possibly get it
12:03done because
12:03it's been what 53 years oh yeah what 1973 was the last title uh danny i i i'd be remiss
12:13if i didn't
12:13ask you because i asked you about austin reeves and you did mention they got to talk about brawn
12:16first what do you think on both sides do you think it's best for the lakers to get back brawn
12:21and
12:22more importantly is it best for brawn to get back with the lakers well brawn you know it's a home
12:28for him he lives there as families and i think he wants to ultimately stay there but i think he
12:31wants
12:32to be respected and have the best farewell which again he could possibly probably play two or three
12:37more years but i don't know his mindset is that i'm assuming it's his last year we just as we
12:42get
12:42older it's like hard for us to believe that older guys can still do that or want to do that
12:46when they have nothing left to prove so i'm like there's no way he has more years it's like he's
12:50retiring at this year and he keeps proving me wrong every year making me look stupid just like
12:54the rest of the media but i'm like all right next year's got to be his last year so you
12:58know and
12:58he's just a player that's so good and i think there's not many other people guys available that
13:02can give you what brawn gives you even though he's 41 years old he's still a top player and he's
13:08worth you know 40 50 million dollars okay if you can get him at less than that great but you
13:13know
13:13it's hard for him as a player that's been your most reliable and available guy in the playoffs
13:20for you and your best playing the playoffs to be like hey i'm gonna take a super discount
13:24and you know he's not known to do that but i think it's important imperative for them to try to
13:29either
13:29you know keep him or if you can find somebody better which i doubt you can do to replace him
13:34so i think
13:34they should bring him back and austin and give him you know the farewell that he deserves if that if
13:39that's what he wants if he wants to be in la it's like all right let's do this last year
13:43this is
13:43bronze last year we're gonna try to still make a push and still be good because those three guys
13:47together are good um but yeah i think you ask him give him that respect because he deserves it
13:51i mean he's one of the best players to lace him up and we had a debate the other day
13:54everybody's
13:54like oh he doesn't deserve a statue in la and i'm like i'm like i think he deserves a statue
13:58everywhere he's clean people forget like he's been there for eight years and gotten like seven eight
14:04all-stars as a laker won a championship and people want to discredit it but it's like yeah he's done
14:09some incredible things broke a lot of records as a laker so yeah he deserves respect in the city of
14:16los angeles completely agree he is danny green he's a three-time nba champion and he's the host of
14:22inside the green room with harrison sanford danny i cannot thank you enough for joining us here on
14:28derrick and decker one of our first ever interviews on the show my guy
14:33honor man i'm glad that i'm one of the first guys you asked so thank you thanks for having me
14:38appreciate it dg man absolutely rest of your day man yes sir you too thank you next year
14:44yes indeed baby we're gonna get it yeah thank you go danny green ladies and gentlemen if you have
14:50not checked out his podcast you are wasting your time go over there and check out that podcast and
14:54next year
14:55game
