00:00The US has denied any involvement in Norway's cancelled missile sale to Malaysia,
00:05saying it supports the acquisition for defence purposes.
00:09It comes after reports claim the deal was blocked
00:12because some of the missiles contained US-made components
00:15which would place them under American export restrictions.
00:22The dispute centres on naval strike missiles built by Kongsberg Defence
00:26and aerospace for Malaysia's new fleet of literal mission ships.
00:30Norway earlier announced it would limit defence exports to its allies and closest partners,
00:36prompting speculation that the US-made components triggered export controls.
00:41Defence Minister Datuk Sri Khalid Nordin said
00:43Malaysia had already paid 95% of the contract, valued at RM634 million.
00:50He added that Putrajaya was now seeking more than RM1 billion in compensation from Kongsberg
00:55for direct and indirect costs due to the cancellation.
00:59Prime Minister Datuk Sri Anwar Ibrahim also criticised Norway's decision,
01:03calling it unacceptable and that Malaysia had fulfilled all of its obligations
01:08under the agreement since 2018.
