00:00The 4.8-kilometre Batang Lupa No. 1 bridge in Sarawak, the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia,
00:07officially opened to traffic today.
00:10The title was previously held by the 1.7-kilometre-long Sungai Johor Bridge.
00:15Construction of the bridge linking Sebuyao and Maludam began in March 2021, reported the Borneo Post.
00:22The new bridge is part of Sarawak's broader infrastructure transformation
00:27under the Coastal Road Network and Second Shrunk Road Programme,
00:31which aims to improve connectivity between coastal areas and major towns.
00:36Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Oppeng told the State Legislative Assembly yesterday
00:41that the bridge would significantly ease travel for the people by eliminating long waits for the very service.
00:49He said that with this bridge, the people can return to their hometowns easily
00:53for the Hayuraya Haji and Gawai Dayak celebrations,
00:56adding that there will no longer be any need to wait for the ferry.
