Tonpeiyaki is an easy Japanese pork and cabbage omelette recipe that wraps savory stir fried filling in soft egg for a warm izakaya style dish. This recipe usually starts by cooking thin pork slices with shredded cabbage until the cabbage softens slightly while still keeping a light crunch. The filling is then covered or wrapped with beaten egg, creating a tender omelette texture around the juicy pork and vegetables. A finishing layer of okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, bonito flakes, aonori, or green onion adds sweet savory flavor, richness, and classic Japanese aroma. The final tonpeiyaki is quick, comforting, and easy to serve for lunch, dinner, or a side dish, with soft egg, crisp cabbage, tender pork, and a familiar street food style finish.

00:00Hi everyone, I'm Yuto and today on Statue I'm going to show you a quick and easy omelette style dish
00:05called Tompeyaki.
00:07We'll start with the sauce, so grab a bowl and add half tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, half tablespoon of oyster
00:14sauce,
00:15one tablespoon of ketchup, one teaspoon of honey and half teaspoon of soy sauce.
00:22This is essentially an easy okonomiyaki sauce, so if you already have okonomiyaki sauce at home, you can use that
00:29instead.
00:30Next, let's prepare the mixture for the omelette. All you need is 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of milk.
00:40Then whisk until smooth. We don't need to season it because we'll be drizzling it with sauce at the end.
00:47Set this by the stove and let's cook our fillings.
00:52Heat a pan on medium and add a drizzle of oil.
00:54Add 50g of shredded cabbage and a sprinkle of chopped green onions.
00:59Add a pinch of sawn pepper and stir fry for a minute or so until slightly softened.
01:14Transfer them to a plate and add 100g of thinly sliced pork belly.
01:19If you can't get pork belly like this, unsmoked bacon is a good substitute.
01:24As you can see, the ingredients for this dish are similar to okonomiyaki.
01:28It's basically an easy shortcut version of okonomiyaki.
01:33Once it's crispy on both sides, transfer to a plate and wipe the excess oil out of the pan.
01:40Reduce the heat to medium low and add the egg mixture.
01:44Swirl the pan around a few times to help make the omelette fluffy.
01:47Then once the edges start to set, add the filling down in the middle.
01:55Omelettes cook very quickly so you need to add the fillings before it's fully cooked.
02:00Once the omelette is about 80% cooked, carefully fold over the edges.
02:05Don't worry if it breaks a bit, this will be hidden underneath anyway.
02:09Finally, flip onto a plate.
02:15If you're not happy with the shape, you can reshape it with plastic wrap or kitchen paper.
02:20Drizzle with the easy okonomiyaki sauce.
02:28Then add mayonnaise and a sprinkle of Aonori.
02:34And that's it, easy and delicious tonpeyaki in just 10 minutes.
